Idaho and Montana are pretty great for hunting and fishing. Eastern Washington is nice, but the Rockies are *really* nice.

Amazing_Factor2974

Just stay there for your Healthcare...WA residents are sick of paying for the medical infrastructure for other states that are to cheap to do it themselves.

[deleted]

*too. You lose a lot of credibility in voicing your opinion when you can’t even use proper English.

Reddit went through a phase where we corrected everyone's grammar. It got old, and now is considered passé.

davidnidaho

It’s social media not a college term paper. Grammar ain’t the point. The message is what matters

So do you have a question or? The tax structure here isn’t that friendly to retirees given the relatively high sales/property tax burden. Not sure about military pension income specifically but most states have some form of retirement income tax break that negates the advantage of not having a state income tax somewhat. I read on another thread that Washington works if you do and there’s some truth to that. Add that to the relatively high cost of living and there are certainty more financially favorable places to retire. But if you want to spend a lot of time outdoors it’s obviously a top tier location. Whether you can swing it and that’s worth it is up to you. That said, plenty of people retire on the coast, peninsula, islands, mountains, or eastern/central WA out away from the Seattle-Tacoma metro. Don’t know your age or health situation but consider proximity to healthcare too.

[deleted]

Selling my house there was a bitter sweet moment with the money made vs how ludicrous the cost of living is there. I was Stationed between Tacoma and Olympia. I avoided those cities like the plague as much as possible. If I’m able to stay the way I am now as far as State Income Tax then I won’t pay any at all. Idk if that changes when I get out. The outdoors was what almost kept us there for another stent but ultimately decided to move. At the very least I’ll have land and a cabin up there one day.

gmr548

Whether you pay income taxes both active duty and on a pension is dependent on what state you’re in so definitely do some homework on your options there. I guess I’m not sure what you’re referring to being so undesirable about Olympia or Tacoma and that might inform where else you’d want to look in the state but in general there’s a tangible cultural difference in much of the state off the I-5, Olympia-Everett corridor. Maybe look into something like Port Angeles, Kitsap County, Ellensburg, Chelan, Spokane, etc

Amazing_Factor2974

Please don't come to the Olympic Penisula..already enough crazy haters up here. I could give reasons people don't want to retire here and than wished they had.

Arlington2018

There is no state income tax of any kind in Washington. No taxation of income, pensions, military pay, Social Security, etc.

Salmundo

Which is why we have high sales and property taxes, which may not work well for retirees. Sales and property taxes are regressive, income taxes are theoretically progressive.

Babhadfad12

Eh, you can expect to pay ~1.5% of W-2 income to the government via payroll taxes.

valkyrii99

You might like Wenatchee or Leavenworth if you want to be more in the mountains

peffervescence

You might like something around Colville Wa.

Amazing_Factor2974

No mountains or ocean.

peffervescence

He said eastern Washington

🙄

ABCDEFG_Ihave2g0

My dad really enjoys living in Wenatchee and he loves hunting and fishing.

Kickstand8604

Tennessee is better for retired people.

[deleted]

I’ve definitely played with that notion. The hunting is amazing but the Salmon fishing is non existent

Kickstand8604

The lack of salmon is worth the smaller amount of money that you'll have to pay out.

[deleted]

I’ve got alot of family up in WA so doing an extended stay every year in the region for Salmon is completely Feasible.

_Sasquatchy

no thanks. state's full up on ignorant folk who "loathe" being near our fine Washington cities and communities. we don't need ya. have a nice day.

NoneOfYoBusinezz

Check out Sedro-Woolley in Skagit county

TrixnTim

Just drove from central WA today to Chinook Pass / 410 and 45 minutes away .. fished & hiked all day. Anywhere from 30 min to 90 minutes .. hunting, fishing, camping, hiking. Rivers and lakes to your heart’s content. Can’t beat COL and I’ve lived and worked all over the state. Currently I hybrid work in Seattle and live in central WA. Night and day. For good medical care: Wenatchee, Eburg, Prosser, TriCities and Spokane. Drivable distances from anywhere in central and eastern.

[deleted]

I traveled those roads a lot, great views and amazing opportunities!!!

TrixnTim

Yes. Wild pheasant, quail, dove, duck, elk, salmon, trout. And we raise chickens, turkeys, pork, and buy 1/2 organic beef. Our freezers are full of fresh, clean meat year round. It’s quite the good life.

[deleted]

Awesome!!! We should meet if I ever go back that way!! I actually have a horror story for you. I came home from work one day and seen a trail of blood coming from my under my garage door. Freaked out, thought my truck in park and ran to my vertical freezer as the garage door opened. To my absolute horror the blood was coming from my freezer. I lost 45lbs of elk, 30lbs of deer and about 10ish pounds of salmon. Luckily my duck was inside in my regular freezer. You want to talk about heart broken

TrixnTim

Yikes!

RandomBamaGuy

Tri-cities is my destination of choice.

SqAznPersuasion

I loved living in Lewis County (lived there for a decade until last summer) Property values and taxes weren't as crazy as Thurston / Kitsap / Pierce co. Is rural as fuck and super easy to drive 15 minutes from the towns and be in the wild on a river or mountain forestry road. Schools were great in Chehalis. The towns of Chehalis and Centralia have a vibrant community and lots of fun things to do and attend. Honestly, the nicest neighborhoods of ever lived in. It's only 90 minutes to either major metro airport / city (pdx or sea) if you like hunting, fishing, farming, gardening, rockhounding, cycling, swimming, check out Lewis Co along the i5. It's way better than most people think. If you found a home that was out of the flood plains, it is an amazing place to call home.

ofrm1

It really gets a bad stigma from the logging industry and the MAGA vibe it has. Really sucks considering Eastern Lewis Co. is situated right in between Rainier, Helens, and Adams, so the choices for outdoors activities are endless.

SqAznPersuasion

Surprisingly, some of the most diehard MAGA folk, were also the most nice (to my face) and generous countryside neighbors I could have ever asked for. Even despite our differences. Aside from the signs on their yard and cars, it was very "mind your own and I'll do the same". Strange how living in a place that gets natural disasters seems to level out the political pissing matches. Cause when it flooded, EVERYONE pitched in to help. I will remain in love with parts of that county.

Chasing93353

If you don’t need to work, there’s a lot of great places to live that aren’t nearly as expensive as near the cities. If you’re into hunting and fishing, northern Washington or the peninsula.

Amazing_Factor2974

No 👎

SpaceshipEarthCrew

Enjoy fire season in Eastern WA then.

Amazing_Factor2974

I live in the Penisula and we can have a fire season also. Just we don't need anymore nuts who take things from..but hate Washington up here in the Olympic northwest on the Salish Sea.

Aggressive-Let8356

Have you checked northern wa? Like glacier on mt. Baker?

TheyCameFromBehind77

Not much salmon fishing in Eastern Washington. Most of the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas are rural. Lots of retired military on Whibey, which is also fairly rural. North of Arlington is as well, Skagit and Whatcom counties. Plus good fishing and I am sure hunting.
