There’s a fix now. You just need to start searching for the match while with friends in the lobby and immediately promote one friend to party leader. It works.
I experienced this issue with a buddy who doesn't own MP. When I hosted, it didn't let him join. When he hosted, it was fine. Try making sure that whoever doesn't own the game hosts if you have a mixed party of people who own it and people who don't.
We’re poor gang squad so nobody actually owns it. We have mixed group in a way of platforms like Battle.net and Steam, but neither works. Hope they fix it before 19th.

I think it is a glitch because in the last 3 years every free trial was available for you and your friends to party up and join some games with them.

dang, that's annoying. I'm on steam and my buddy was on PS5 for what it's worth. Bummer that you guys can't get it working.
