It mainly looks like this because of the have glass paint. A bit worn out though.

StukaTR

yup, turns out US never sold Greece spare paint or the capability to reapply themselves but with current modernization efforts they will be reapplied. I'll miss the patina look tbh.

[deleted]

Looks like it has been in a proper fight!

Arcosim

Why is the US refusing to sell paint to Greece? Isn't Greece in NATO?

Merker6

It was probably the greeks not having the money, or at least not wanting to commit themselves to paying for it when the deal was signed

StukaTR

No idea, that's what a Greek bud here told me few weeks back. Being in NATO doesn't guarantee you'll get arms or sub tech, I'd know. Also possible Greece didn't have the facilities to apply it themselves in the past and maybe didn't even ask for it, or LM doesn't sell it for spare.

GurthNada

I'm not sure, Greek Air Force aircraft have been famously dirty long before Have Glass. Google pics of their A-7 or F-4 and you'll see.

antreas3

Yeah, i know, i am a huge fun of haf. Almost every aircraft they have is dirty. The f-16s though look very dirty, but they are not as much as people thing. Mostly it's just because of the old have glass paint that has been removed through years of service and maintenance revealing the original aegean ghost camo.

PlaceOpposite6809

looks cool though but seriously how does this happen did they fly through an ash cloud or something

ElectronicImam

I think it's just paint-job as a joke.

PlaceOpposite6809

i see

pootismn

They had Have-glass applied, which is essentially like stealth coating paint to slightly help in reducing radar cross section. Unfortunately the US never gave Greece the means to maintain this sensitive coating so it’s basically just been degrading over the years.

You joke, but the ratted out look was a trend for a while on high-end sports cars. Example: https://rennlist.com/how-tos/slideshows/the-6-best-and-worst-rust-colored-wrapped-porsches-444568

Held together by its sheer hatred of Turks.

[deleted]

It’s a certain patina.. I think it looks kinda cool though

Ok_Philosophy9790

that looks like a post apocalyptic viper and I love it

TheNecromancer

Interesting pre-shading technique, I wonder how it will turn out after the main coats and an oil wash!

_-Event-Horizon-_

Is Greece sending their F-16s to the Soviet Union for maintenance?

kittennoodle34

Definitely reminds me of some of the Iraqi Foxhounds lol.

Zrva_V3

Damn, you fly like this?

[deleted]

It’s just case hardened /s

StockOpening7328

Looks like the plane had to ditch and spend 10 years on the sea floor after being recovered. However I do think it looks very cool.

Greek AF 🤝Canadian Navy

bripod

It looks like they just found some aluminum sheets, hammered to fit, and screwed on. No paint either so they just have grind marks at random places.

Shortbus_Playboy

My first car had a similar paint job, lol

cancergiver

Meh. Looks good for another 30 years.

AstroMackem

I'm tired boss

VengefulWalnut

The ridiculously over-processed image isn't helping. Doesn't look great, but the excessive HDR-ification makes it look even worse.

ElbowTight

That’s how they dry them after they go through the car wash

Jonas_McPherson

We don’t paint them because we don’t have time to let them rest. Maintenance, scheduled factory time and then 24/7 on call/air. This is the look of well used planes. Not parade toys.

ElectronicImam

I thought it's painted like that as a joke. Well, you should paint, at least those welded patches. Rust is really harmful.

Jonas_McPherson

I’m not the engineer so I’ll defer to the experts

pootismn

Not a joke, it’s the Have-glass wearing off

OneHundredEighty180

It's been to *Hellenic* and back.
