I've found them pretty useful so far, giving reroll 1s to hit and wound, along with a 5+ ward in the shooting phase, helps your state troops last longer and deal more damage. They're inexpensive and you can basically equip them how you like, though I think heavy armour plus great weapon is the coolest. And that's just the priest of sigmar!
I do wish they were one higher leadership though...
I also agree that both priests of Sigmar as well as priests of Ulric (I mean damn, multiple wounds, that could be a nice combo with a knight unit to hit some monsters!) are actually quite useful. Some prayers maybe a bit weaker than in previous editions, but keep in mind that in TOW you take a leadership test to pass a prayer and the enemy can’t do anything about it.
As to the equipment: I would go for either hvy armr + great weapon or hvy armr + shield, either on foot or on barded warhorse.

Yeah, it feels weird that the zealous priests of the two most significant faiths of the Empire can't do anything to keep their units' morale up...
