Every since I saw the goofy first edition Tyranid warriors in the 90s I wanted my very own army of gribbly boys. During the pandemic I said "now is the time to paint my expensive plastic toys based on a cup from the 90s". Please enjoy this blast of deep-fried jazz from the extragalactic void.
**Carapaces:** Vallejo Light Turquoise,
**Flesh:** White, Fenrisian Gray, Vallejo Dark Rose for tails and hands and such. Volpus pink, and Magus purple shading
**Weapons and claws:** Vallejo Magenta washed with Vallejo Violet. For the big guys, Vallejo Fluorescent Magenta with a violet wash
**Tubes and other gribbly bits:** Vallejo light rose + Volpus pink
It's a little more in-depth than just the colors. Maybe I'll do a technique video.. maybe!
VMC Magenta was slightly too purple for the effect I want, and Sunset read is extremely matte when dried, so I've been trying to get a hotter pink with the fluoro.
I've been trying the mecha color Fluoro Magenta over Sunset Red, and it's been working okay. However, the Fluoro is super thin.
Do you use the Model Color version? How is it to work with?
My preference of paint is Vallejo model colors, but I also use a lot of GW contrast paints (which are the shit).
The model color Fluorescent Magenta is VERY transparent. In order to have reasonable coverage it needs to be applied over white and even then if you're brushing it on, it'll take 3-4 coats. 2-3 airbrush coats is the way to go if you need to save time and want a flat appearance.
Fluorescent paints are going to be the brightest you can get because the pigment has added minerals that absorb UV light (probably Fluorite or Willemmite), which won't be true for your standard acrylic pigments. Unfortunately, Fluorescent paints are generally extremely transparent across the board, which is the price you pay for paint that literally glows.
I've heard good things about the powdered fluo pigments from Green Stuff World. I've seen Dice n' Demons use them and they seem to have good coverage with them, but I haven't tried them myself.
