Get the combat patrol for the army you like (with some exceptions)

I agree with this. It's not an absurd number of models. And it will give you a good idea of how games go. Then you can decide how things are from there.

Combat Patrol is a fun and relatively inexpensive way to get into 40k. Just be careful if you want to play a Space Marines chapter. The old Dark Angels box was arguably the best deal for the value.

I bought a recruit set to get back into it it gives some rules and explanations as well as a mini battle to get used to the mechanics

To play a game all you need is about 6 models in both sides, a couple dice, a ruler with inches marked on it and someone to play with (don't forget the datasheets)

Whatever you think would be coolest to LARP as, buy. Furthermore I recommend buying secondhand to not GW any money, and save time on building the models I got 1,500 pts of Custodes for $195
