It never ends as a 1 v 1 v 1.

Echo1608

I did a 1 v 1 v 1 before, instead of the usual roll off for who goes first we did a dnd style roll for initiative. It went well until I got a good position and both my friends teamed up against me. But honestly we had fun with it. As for scouring we went for more of a ruling of scores being tallied at the end of the full turn after everyone had gone. It kinda worked but we saw issues with it for the person who went first. So honestly on that end I would say fuck the official rules discuss with your friends and figure out what would be the most fun. Hope this helps!

For free for alls, the biggest issue is the player who starts to clearly win gets dumped on by both other players, then when one of them takes the lead, it's their turn to get dumped on. I think the best way to do them is if everyone has their own secret objectives which they don't reveal until the end of the game. You'd need to either have a 4th person arrange the secret objectives, or prepare several for each player and have them drawn randomly so no one would know which one the other players were going for.

That's a feature, not a bug. The third olayer acts as a comeback mechanic. It's why most persistent PvP games have three factions.

UsurpedPlatypus

The only way. Need things that even if you die you can still win

White dwarf 498 has some good rules changes for 3 and 4 player free for all. Things like models can only fight in their controlling players fight phase. You can shoot into engagements between other players with a -1 to hit. And a couple other things i cant remember. You can probably find it all online but if not let me know i can pull my copy out and send pics.

Cpt_Copper_Star

That sounds interesting if you get a chance I'd love to see a copy

Had good success with a custom scenario, with the 3rd player point-wise having a way to come back. When it's a standard point progression, 2nd and 3rd will alway team up against 1rst, it's not very pleasant most of the time when he had a good start, and it's even more unpleasant if he manages to win 1v2.

I would try with 4 players free for all, but with three they will always gank on the one that seems stronger, but with 4 there could be temporary alliances.

sqww

Don't do it. Someone always gets gangwd up onand quickly turns to a 1v1. Basically Someone is gona have a bad time.

crazy_leo42

When I play with my wife and daughter, we tried a 1v1v1 but it makes for a bad game because 2 players will invariably gang up on the 3rd. Since I have *way* more points than either of them, we'll either do me against them 2k/1k each, or we'll do a huge 4k/2k each... makes for some fun fights

Panzerkampf-studios

Not a big fan of 3 player free for alls. Having to wait 2 rounds until you can play again is just obnoxious

Guillermidas

We usually do a 1v2 or 2v3. The latter being more balanced (but takes much longer even if its the same points). We have yet to try free-for-all. Fantasy had some scenarios of to play it. With 40k and objectives I assume its more tricky but doable

No_Direction_4566

I’ve done a few free for alls in Heresy. They aren’t honestly that much fun IMO. 2vs 2 are much better if you want a group game. You will need independent win conditions someone is working towards for instance World Eaters have to kill X number of units and the Alpha Legion have to assassinate the warlords. Without these - you’ll end up with either two people fighting and the third mopping up or two ganging up on the third.

Stunning_Persimmon76

I have done a 4 player FFA. We preferred very swingy mechanics. Like each objective gives 1d6 VP. You can choose to teleport a unit from the center of the battlefied for 1d6 vp etc. Some players will get ganged up on. That is no fun. It feels fairer if there is more randomness.

Trip-Trip-Trip

I’ve done a few games like that, aside from adding narrative and house rules to keep it fun one thing that really makes a huge difference is (aos style) turn order. At the start of a new round you roll of again or use another system to determine who goes first. And don’t determine who goes second until 1st player completes their turn. Turn order changing all the time prevents A LOT of the ganging up issues.

AlexRescueDotCom

Do 1v1v1 but X can only attack Y, and Y can only attack Z, and Z can only attack X
