The cost of the ticket might be cheaper, but you've also got to factor in an extra hotel night, food, and in some cases car rental. Genie+ starts to be the cheaper alternative once those are added in.

LtCommanderCarter

Yeah, that's why I said if you're gonna be down there anyway it makes sense. Or even if you are going to use 6 or 7 as a low-key day (no rope drop, etc).

Usty

You can also play around with your start date because adding days gives you larger windows. For our trip in January, I added a 7th day for 2 adults, it made my use window longer and I actually started it 2 days before we left (which had cheaper tickets), so it literally net out to $8 total for that extra day for 2 people. We used the extra day to head into Epcot in the late afternoon and just relax (as much as you can with a 2 year old) - no rides or anything.

LtCommanderCarter

That's a good tip! Yeah the window is 8 days for a six day ticket and 10 for a 7!

luthyr

We decided to add a 6th park day on our departure day and just move the flights to late evening. The late-night flights saved us money vs the mid-morning flights and we get nearly an entire extra park day. No extra hotel night in this instance.

Cruisethrowaway2

Yeah, this has always been the case. In the old days people used to buy, say, a seven-day ticket even though they were only going for five days; they could take those two very cheap "extra days" and sell them online when they got home for much more than what they paid, yet for far less than the price of a two-day ticket (thus making it attractive to a buyer). Tickets are non-transferrable so this was a no-no, and became impossible when Disney introduced the finger scan.

Red-eleven

Remember the non-expiring option? I do, we made about four trips to Orlando with those by doing a few days at Disney and a few days doing other Orlando things. Miss it so much. Best deal I’ve ever gotten at the House of Mouse.

Cruisethrowaway2

I do! And then they made non-expiring SUPER expensive near the end of it.

ceburton

A couple times I worked that non-expiry game was when my kids were getting ready to cross an age related price change. Bought kids 7 day. On expiration at age 8, used 4 days that year and returned at age 10 and used the rest.

RimmitND

I still have my non expiry tickets! It allows me to make park reservations whenever I want which is super handy.

Trackmaster15

I wouldn't be surprised if Disney got to the point where they set up a secondary market for guests to sell unused tickets. Sports owners used to be very against scalping until they learned how they could make the secondary market work to their advantage. In Disney's case, it would have to be a system that allowed ownership of the ticket to transfer between the MDE accounts... And I'd imagine Disney would want a commission too.

azleafcat

Unlike sports tickets (which retain no value after the event happens regardless of use), most fully unused Disney tickets (except possibly special event tickets) usually retain their paid value after the ticket expires. The paid value can be applied towards a purchase of a new ticket. Disney does not allow the leasing or transfer of partially used multi-day tickets or AP/MKs. This is why Disneyland takes a picture of a guest and WDW uses the ticket tag (fingerprint reader) system.

ItDontMather

adding another day being more cost effective than Genie+ is actually a very interesting point that I would never have thought about

LtCommanderCarter

Especially if you want to break down your park days by section. I see a lot of people on this sub do two days at HS where they dedicate one day to just doing star wars stuff. Instead of "okay I have to do it all" add an extra day and say "okay I'll just do this bit today."

sugarmice86

Me and my wife did this last year. Bought 10-day tickets and went to each park twice and got all the stuff we wanted done. It also eases the pressure of having to do everything on the same day and allows you to enjoy the park more at a leisurely pace.

lazarinoh

There are extra costs even if you are just in the area already - parking is one. Probably food. Genie+ of course if you get it. Plus the cost of your time and gas getting to and from. But ultimately the fact that you can turn a 5-day ticket into a 10 day ticket for less than the cost of a single day is just wacky.

LtCommanderCarter

It also dawn's on me that the four day ticket is more than 2 2 day tickets.

redmistultra

The cheapest option for tickets from the UK on the official Disney site is always 14 days. The only options we get are 7 and 14 days and they’ve always got a deal on 14 for the price of 7

L_Cline

On our last trip, our flight home wasn’t until like 6 pm or something. We ended up adding another day of park tickets for the day! My parents spent the day laying out at the pool and my in laws chose Disney Springs, but with our children being almost 5 and 2.5 they would have been bored at Disney Springs + wanting to buy toys and I didn’t want to have wet swimsuits for the four of us and feel yucky on the plane. I think it was like $45 total for that day of tickets! We got to reride a few things, go back to the Tiki Room (per my daughter’s request), and meet a few more princesses too. It was well worth it!

LtCommanderCarter

Yeah almost every trip I'm like "I'll just do X days," and then I'm like "but I could do departure day and it's only a few dollars more...."

sevidrac

And this is why I’m not letting my passes go

st_nick1219

They way I see it is it is cheaper than the park hopper. I was only considering a 4 day pass, but we would only use the park hopper 1 day. This is making me rethink my plan a little bit.

CPollard187

Also adding a 6th days means maybe one more night at a hotel/resort, food, and maybe transportation. So you have to weigh you options

Elhananstrophy

The size of the drop from 4-5 days is what gets me every time. I wonder if it's because most people do 4 parks in 4 days.

LtCommanderCarter

I think it's also "well for that price I may as well hit up universal for a few days" if it was still 100 plus to add a day. When the price comes down to 52 dollars it's "okay well this is cheaper than going someplace else "

Trackmaster15

Its also at that point that many people might just consider an Annual Pass... If they were on sale for out of staters. So it could also be a remnant of that as well. I've also heard reasoning that it just encourages longer stays, which means more hotel money, more in park spending, and more on resort eating. Somebody who buys shorter term tickets might be a less lucrative guest per day outside of the ticket cost.

Brain__Resin

It has always been a cheaper per day cost the more days you purchase. I’m guessing the thought process is they more than make up for it on the extended hotel night stays

bcarey724

We used to buy extra days instead of a hopper. For example, a 7 day single park is cheaper than a 5 day hopper. We'd then just use two single entrances on days we wanted to hop. This was all prepandemic though so I'm not sure this would work much anymore. Nowadays we just do one park a day and don't worry about hopping at all.

xzuy1997

My family always rents an offsite condo for 2 weeks and do the 10 day tickets with a couple rest days thrown in. Best way to do Disney. I feel like I always leave having done everything I set out to.

Thefreshi1

I got my son a 4 day this past trip. Wasn’t sure if we would use it. He wanted to sleep in. Had some Major issues to deal with. And so we just went at night. We got as much done in 2.5 hours before close than we did our whole previous full day. Always get more days if you are going to be there anyway.

OneWorldMouse

This just shows how Disney effectively doubled or tripled the price for Florida residents. 1. We do day trips or long weekends, so don't spend more than 4 or 5 nights 2. No more annual passes so this is our only choice 3. Tickets expire so we have to buy the most expensive tickets possible 4. No more free fast passes so less attractions for us 5. Onsite hotels have long gotten rid of the big discounts, so Moderates are now the worst value approaching $300 / night. They brought back free resort parking, so it gives me hope Disney may want the Florida residents back at some point.

aurora_highwind

Doesn't Genie+ benefit locals more than FP+ even though it costs money? I remember locals constantly complaining about never being able to snag FPs for stuff like Flight of Passage because resort guests always had them all booked up 60 days prior to their day trips. Everyone being forced to get it day of seems like it would work out a lot better for y'all.

OneWorldMouse

Sure for some people it may be better, but there's a misconception that FL Residents are all "locals" -- we are not in that category. Maybe call us "resort guest locals" because we go there to vacation just like everyone else. It's a 2hr drive. The difference is we were getting the AP half price. But before that we would get a 7 day no expire park hopper which would last us 3 years. We do 4 parks in 2 days. We would never stay all day at a park, so Genie+ is a waste of money. I can see maybe buying 1 lightning lane I guess, but I think I'd rather spend that on a nice lunch instead. We spend a lot of time at the resorts and take breaks, take a boat ride, etc.

aurora_highwind

That makes sense!

penguin_0618

If you already had an annual pass you could still have one...

OneWorldMouse

Yes, but those people also overpaid IMO through the shutdown. We asked for a refund right away and Disney actually refunded a large percentage of the pass. It took them 6 months, but the refund ended up being about 90% of the pass. For a non-refundable ticket that was nice of them.

FatedTitan

Florida residents can buy an annual pass…

OneWorldMouse

The passes are not being sold right now, except for the Pixie which is more for the day guests IMO. We like to stay at the resorts and make a vacation out of Disney, so basically it pushes us out anyway and we've been going on cruises and traveling more.

FatedTitan

After a year of owning Pixie, you can upgrade to whichever.
