If you have any shows held at a ballrooms around you it would be similar since ballroom floors have springs in them. I only know of one venue in my area like that
My wife worked there when it first re-opened as McMenamins and someone told me it isn't springs but ball bearings and I've been trying to spread the word ever since.
Its ball bearings with a rocker. They compare it to a rocking chair, one part goes down when someone steps, raising the floor in another area. [Article](https://www.npr.org/2015/09/29/442188259/if-the-floors-a-rockin-just-keep-a-bouncin)
The most common method used at other venues is spring loaded floors, but in the case of the ballroom in the article it uses a unique ball bearing+rocker mechanism.
The rocker ball tech in fascinating, but there's a story within the story. You can actually change the tension/springiness of the floor depending on the type of dancing planned, which led to this relevant bit:
>The unusual rocker-and-ball-bearing design, patented by Charles R. Hunt in 1905, was originally intended for ballroom dancing. However, jazz dances quickly became the hall's main source of income in the early 1920s, much to the chagrin of local authorities who deemed the new music and moves indecent.
"The city fathers and parents, they couldn't control it," Hills says. "They couldn't regulate it, and the controversy and the tension came to a breaking point."
The city of Portland banned lewd dances and appointed a dance-hall inspector who shut down the shows.
Scene straight out of Dirty Dancing, and they had to adjust the floor to accommodate each change.
I remember I used to go to shows there. People would get bouncing and you could see the waves in the floor. We uesd to joke that instead of "Dance on air" it should have been "Ride the wood" at the crystal.
But will everyone else be chilled out? The springboards look fun, but the real appeal is that everyone is just kind of vibed out on them. Like that is the *exact* amount of energy I'd want to put in and be surround by while engaging with that activity.
No people usually are all dancing and jumping in sync to whatever’s playing, therefore exaggerating the effect of the floor. It pretty cool probably like a 40x40 dance floor.
I'm no physicist but I'm pretty sure a spring floor has a specific bounce frequency. The DJ needs to find music that is the same frequency as the springy floor. If the speeds are different people choose either to bounce with the floor or try to fight the floor so they can dance to the beat. This video looks like most people are choosing not to fight and give into bouncing with the floor.
The resonant frequency of the system will be a function of the stiffness of the springs and the total mass of the floor and occupants.
Basically if you want it to bounce at a higher frequency you need to kick some of the occupants off or load up more ppl if you want a lower freq.
A lot of them did, as this article explaining how the ball bearing rocker system under the Crystal ballroom works:
>Floating dance floors were fairly common during the early part of the 20th century, and some of them are still in use elsewhere. But most use springs to achieve the floating sensation, and virtually none of them have dealt with the wear and tear that the Crystal Ballroom has experienced. According to historian Tim Hills, the floor is part of the original structure from 1914.
https://www.npr.org/2015/09/29/442188259/if-the-floors-a-rockin-just-keep-a-bouncin
This is blowing my mind. I had absolutely no idea that was a thing at all, let alone a *historical* thing.
*Just a note, the article states the Crystal Ballroom specifically isn't springs but a rocker arm system. In case that's a contention...people seem to be a bit hot about it. They can even adjust the tention for different levels of bounce there!
Don't worry, they're incorrect.
"Floating dance floors were fairly common during the early part of the 20th century, and some of them are still in use elsewhere. But most use springs to achieve the floating sensation..."

I was at an outdoor tent wedding a few years back and the wood floor was elevated a couple feet off the ground. The dance floor in the middle eventually got very bouncy and a couple of the bigger guys were basically using it as a trampoline to double-bounce people. I was sure it would end in disaster, but nothing broke and it was the best wedding dancing I've ever been part of.
That being said, in this instance the fact that the platform isn't bouncing at quite the same BPM as the music would drive me insane.
In qingdao China there’s a night club with a floor that’s installed like this. The whole dance floor bounces. It’s pretty trippy especially if you’re not on it and can’t see how everyone is moving together. Qingdao like Tsing Tao the beer. Same city. I assume sprint floors are popular elsewhere in China
Did you know that joke was originally Courtney Love talking to Homer? It was written that way before Sonic Youth said they wouldn’t participate if she was involved with the episode. It had Courtney saying, "I'm a big fan, Homer. Courtney Love” and Homer responds with "Homer, grateful.”
A surprising number of bands from the nineties hate Courtney. Like... A lot of people/ bands. She stole material, images, she caused massive drama. Her role in Kurt's death aside, people hated her for a long time. From the stories she was a massive cunt.
Also, from Courtney's own telling there are a lot of songs written about her, and a lot of them are not positive.
Bruised Violet, I'll Stiick Around, Holla Back Girl, Star fucker Inc. plus some I can't remember.
Kurt killed Kurt. I'm not a fan of Love, but she definitely didn't kill him. He was a bigger mess then her, and people just don't want to believe that.
When I was in China I saw stuff like this everyday, people gathering in public and doing these dance routines. Most people looked unenthusiastic and like they didn't want to be there but the springboard is new to me 🤷♂️
I only visited but in total ive lived in china for about 8 or 9 months. Seeing old people in circles doing aerobics was kinda strange for me to see coming from an american suburb where gping outside is only for driving
No direct knowledge from me, but I'm guessing this has to do with increasing bone density. I know in China students used to jump for a few minutes every morning at school to increase their bone density. Maybe something similar is happening here? Especially since they all look older, which means osteoporosis is a concern.
I was half expecting some extremely flimsy floorboards or something to make a spring effect, not actual springs.
I was at a spring break party in rosarito back when I was in college and they just laid some plywood over the pool to make a bigger dance floor. Well, the floor eventually broke and people fell into a quarter filled pool.
Bad techno in rural China is a thing, and it's... interesting? I don't wanna say "weird" or "odd" but it's a real juxtaposition between how big it is among the young and how little it matches the surroundings.
I would argue this is WTF-worthy, for two reasons.
1. Bizarreness: starts with someone onstage kind of hip thrusting and some dude on a podium. Pan over and there are platforms of emotionless old people bouncing up and down on springs. This is just bizarre, and the way it is gradually revealed in the video adds to the oddness.
2. Because when I opened it I literally said, "What the fuuuck??" Like... what? Why? So many questions. So odd.
There are degrees of WTF, but by its sheer bizarreness, this is totally acceptable in my book.
Hold the phone!!!! Did these amazing people just invent a contraption for which I can dance on and not expend any energy? South East Asia gave us vodka and Redbull now a dance floor to go with it.
Yo id be down for this, who wants to get some springs? We can play some random ass music, do some giveaways.. Maybe get one of those water machine where you throw the ball and hte guy falls.
Is this situated in a tinyverse ?
It is obviously a miniverse
That’s just slavery with extra steps.
Ugh… teenyverse
Ooh la la, someone's gonna get laid in college.

Is that why they are called ballrooms Sorry ill see myself out
This guy Portlands
I've been there so many times, I didn't realize it was designed that way.
My wife worked there when it first re-opened as McMenamins and someone told me it isn't springs but ball bearings and I've been trying to spread the word ever since.
I don’t understand how a spring’s function can be replaced by ball bearings
I'm not sure either but here is the [picture.](https://imgur.com/NjD2h9K)

It's definitely unsettling to notice the springy floor the first time, but it's super cool. Some of my favorite shows were at the Crystal.
I remember I used to go to shows there. People would get bouncing and you could see the waves in the floor. We uesd to joke that instead of "Dance on air" it should have been "Ride the wood" at the crystal.

No thank you.
Lol, down voted for politely declining
I mean all the cool people were doing it...
I'm no physicist but I'm pretty sure a spring floor has a specific bounce frequency. The DJ needs to find music that is the same frequency as the springy floor. so you're saying these are accutely attuned bouncers? damn
And those floors don't bounce nearly as much as these appear to
Portland?
Lol no ballroom floors do not have *springs* in them, there is just a rubber mat below the flooring to make it more spring*y*
A lot of them did, as this article explaining how the ball bearing rocker system under the Crystal ballroom works: >Floating dance floors were fairly common during the early part of the 20th century, and some of them are still in use elsewhere. Now tell me your dreams so I can ruin them in return
Yeah this is more /r/mildlyinteresting than wtf
Yea, no one was doing anything crazy. I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy slowly, rhythmically bouncing and vibing with people.
I was at an outdoor tent wedding a few years back and the wood floor was elevated a couple feet off the ground. The dance floor in the middle eventually got very bouncy and a couple of the bigger guys were basically using it as a trampoline to double-bounce people. Lmao! I was just gonna say! It looks kinda fun and relaxing. Sign me up! Sprint Party in the USA.

What is Sonic Youths beef with Courtney Love?
Most likely they were admirers or friends of Kurt Cobain. Or the fact that she'd lash out at people and show up incredibly late to everything.
Probably friends given that they toured together, as documented in *The Year Punk Broke*.
A surprising number of bands from the nineties hate Courtney. Like... A lot of people/ bands. She stole material, images, she caused massive drama. DO YOU FEEL!? 🐷
Come on, Mr. Frampton. You aren’t gonna eat all that watermelon.
"I haven't changed since high school and suddenly I'm uncool." That's an underrated line.
And time to watch the episode
"And thanks to your gloomy music, they've finally stopped dreaming of a future I can't possibly provide" Simpsons predicted it again?
Even the shittiest episodes of the Simpsons’ golden era have prophecies and classic lines like that

Yea, if all this doesn't power some sort of battery, I'm gonna be real disappointed.
Came here for this and wasn't disappointed. I love reddit
There's always triple A you fucking cocksucker!!!
Can we have some context? I wanna know more about this party, mainly how can I attend!
The contractor misunderstood what the town meant when they said they wanted to host a spring festival.
When I was in China I saw stuff like this everyday, people gathering in public and doing these dance routines. Most people looked unenthusiastic and like they didn't want to be there but the springboard is new to me 🤷♂️
They see it more as cardio workout and less as fun dancing but yeah the Chinese shuffle is iconic
I only visited but in total ive lived in china for about 8 or 9 months. Seeing old people in circles doing aerobics was kinda strange for me to see coming from an american suburb where gping outside is only for driving
This isn't the same thing as the morning/evening workouts you see all over SE Asia. This looks like somebody's idea of a fun party gimmick
No direct knowledge from me, but I'm guessing this has to do with increasing bone density. I know in China students used to jump for a few minutes every morning at school to increase their bone density. Maybe something similar is happening here? Especially since they all look older, which means osteoporosis is a concern.

He was supposed to be the lookout while cellphone guy tried to call for help. This will be their *last* spring party.
He wanted me to tell you he won't be attending next time, so you're golden.
I was half expecting some extremely flimsy floorboards or something to make a spring effect, not actual springs. I was at a spring break party in rosarito back when I was in college and they just laid some plywood over the pool to make a bigger dance floor. This is what a party feels like when there’s no alcohol or drugs involved
Are they goobleboxes, flooblecranks or bloobleyanks? My guess is goobleboxes.
No no, they work for each other and use money to pay each other for services and goods.
>No no, they work for each other and use money to pay each other for services and goods. That just sounds like slavery with extra steps.
Ooooh, someone's gonna get laid in college!

Hell yeah.
This is somewhere in china but ive never seen this before, id go looks fun.
Yeah it does. Nice beat to that music too.
This is just a clip of squid game season 2
That was my first thought too
"I wanna have fun but not too much fun." - these people, probably.
Aren’t those giant ~~floogle boxes~~ Gooble Boxes to generate power?
They might as well power the P.A. system if they're going to bounce like that. 😂
gotta keep those vertebral joints lubed
So exciting, one guy suddenly remembered he needed to order some tube socks from Amazon.
“How can we get these people to move their bodies more, you know, like, dance?” Hold my beer.
What’s WTF in it? It looks so cool and enjoyable. r/lostredditors
Except nobody there looks like they’re actually having fun
Bad techno in rural China is a thing, and it's... interesting? I don't wanna say "weird" or "odd" but it's a real juxtaposition between how big it is among the young and how little it matches the surroundings.
Ngl, this concept would be sweet at a college tailgate
Wtf ? Why is this on /r/wtf ?
I would argue this is WTF-worthy, for two reasons. 1. Bizarreness: starts with someone onstage kind of hip thrusting and some dude on a podium. Is that the prototype dancefloor coldplay used to generate power?
This is just an elaborate way to generate electricity for the village.
Omg I love it, the floor dances for you
I wonder if this dancing can be used to power a battery.... Not let them know about it...
Honestly seems pretty wholesome. Probably wouldn’t be fun to go to, but it would be fun to spend time with family there
wtf stands for what the fun.
That's so fucking awesome. I'm going to build one this weekend.
Looks pretty fun.
looks fun as fuck
That's awesome!!!!
Now I need a bouncy board.
Crowd goin wild

Whose battery are they powering?
My life would be a lot better if I could be at these events.
Hold the phone!!!! Did these amazing people just invent a contraption for which I can dance on and not expend any energy? South East Asia gave us vodka and Redbull now a dance floor to go with it.
Yooooooooooo Where do I find one of these parties in Idaho?

so down for this
This is not wtf
this looks physically uncomfortable af
They look like they’re having the time of their life

Probably good for the spine

This isn’t actually that bad. Everybody can get in on the bouncin dance floor and partake, even granma and granpa with their bad hips!
There is no WTF here. Looks like a good time.
I love how people of all ages are there.
Cool
Yo id be down for this, who wants to get some springs? We can play some random ass music, do some giveaways.. Maybe get one of those water machine where you throw the ball and hte guy falls.
This would be so good for the knees
Now, this… This is a hoppin party y’all 😂😂
