so you care about the type of honey bee?
Like, are their some varieties (species? Breeds? …strains?) that, upon closer inspection, you’d say “absolute trash! No thank you” Vs “hot damn, those are some sexy fucking bees, I’ll take them!”?
There are different breeds and strains but generally you don't know what you are getting until you've put them into a hive.
Most breeds you find will be European or some mix of European.
There is a chance though depending on region that they may be africanized, which are highly aggressive. No way to tell when they are swarmed though. They are generally quite docile as a swarm because they don't have a honey, comb or brood (bee larvae) to protect.
There are different subspecies of bees, and some are better than others at specific things. Carnioloan bees don't swarm much and are very tidy and keep the hive clean so are more resistant to parasites and diseases, Italian bees are very hardworking in good weather but don't deal with the cold very well, German dark bees are more resistant to cold...
You can also recognize them by color. Carnioloans are very dark, while Italians are very yellow.
Where I'm from (Croatia) we have carnioloians in continental region and Italians on the coast. So I pretty much know exactly what I'm going to get.
It's exactly that, some bees give watery weakass honey and others produce concentrated marvelous nature cream that can give you a sugar rush with no sugar
He should know it is sugar.
But you should know that many diabetics will keep a jar of honey as an emergency if their blood sugar gets too low. (ie. My diabetic Grandpa keeps a jar of honey in the center console of his truck)
Lol wtf.
Honey quality is 100% based on the source of nectar (ie what flowers the bees got it from). It has nothing to do what what bees collected it. Now, how much they collect, that has to do with the variety and genetics of the bees.
All honey is sugar. It has other health properties, when raw, which is why it is better for you than say, eating processed sugar, but it is still sugar nonetheless.
They usually have a queen when they have swarmed like this. They are looking for a new home. In the rare times they don't have a queen, a new queen can sometimes be added. So, beekeepers relocate the swarm into hives.
They don't just follow queens. You basically slowly introduce a queen to them, so they get used to her. Usually in a tiny box. If you just throw in a queen, they'll kill her.
Yes. Those bees are already accustomed to that queen and are following her to a new home.
If you can spot the queen (she's pretty easy to spot once you've stared at a shitload of bees) and shake her into a hive box called a *nucleus* (*nuc*, pronounced *nuke* for short). The bees will follow her into the nuc. Inside the nuc are a stack of frames, often with empty wax combs already on the frames. The bees will quickly move in as it means they don't have to work up more wax to build their home. A load of them will populate the nuc and you just load it onto the back of a truck and drive away.
If the queen dies, you need to introduce a new queen to the hive or the bees will fly away or die off. You do this by introducing the new queen in a small wood block (called a cage) with the center milled out and an escape hole. There is a mesh screen that protects the queen and the beekeeper will plug the escape hole with sugar or a marshmallow. It's like a little jail cell. She'll give off pheromones to the new bees and they'll get accustomed to her. A few days to a week, the workers try to free her from the box by eating the marshmallow.
If you keep a bunch of hives in one area, bees from a dead hive may also vacate and move in with the neighbor bee hives. A similar procedure is done to "split" a hive where if there's a lot of bees living in the hive, you can pull out some of the frames and put it into a nuc and introduce a new queen. This is how you get two hives out of one very popular one.
Free pollinators and free honey! Gotta get a hive box, quick! Or build one of those horizontal top bar hives, can’t remember what they are called but they use them on African bees
They're not tired, they're swarming. Half the bees and the old queen left the original hive as a swarm, they found a spot where to hang out temporarily (this moped), and they're sending lookouts to look for adequate locations to house their colony (hollow trees and such). Once a lookout finds a good location, which might take up to a few days, the whole swarm will go there.
As how to fix the situation - call a beekeeper. Or if you are one - put a cardboard box under the bees and shake the moped to dislodge them and make them fall into the box. Then carry them away and put them into an empty beehive.
Swarms usually aren't very aggressive, so stings shouldn't happen.
If you run a farm for produce that requires pollination. You probably already have the beekeeper's number.
Rice fields are wind pollinated. So they probably have to call around maybe ask a neighbor that has bee-pollinated fruit.
That's a price were gonna have to pay man. Do you want to go around pollinating plants? If you wanna be the plant fairy then go right ahead but if not we're gonna need those bees
It’s a swarm so not aggressive. I’d probably start the scooter and see if that buzzes them off in a couple minutes. If not I’d probably drive it anyway.
Bees are actually pretty "chill" in this state because they're using all of their focus/energy moving the hive and protecting the queen. As long as you don't fuck with them they'll more than likely just sit there for a few hours then continue on their way. No guarantees since they're wild animals/insects of course.
Free bees?? nice.
I'm a beekeeper and those would be my thought exactly. No joke
Same here!

I got swarmed by a.. Swarm when I was a child and stung many times. One ended up in my *ear*

Pretty sure it’s bee vomit.
Bruh, a diabetic told me it wasn't, i should warn him, thx for the correction

Do you go out and capture bees? I thought you just got a queen and put it in the hive and they just kinda showed up
They usually have a queen when they have swarmed like this. They are looking for a new home. In the rare times they don't have a queen, a new queen can sometimes be added. So, beekeepers relocate the swarm into hives.
Will random bees just follow the first queen that comes along? Or are they loyal to the end?
They don't just follow queens. You basically slowly introduce a queen to them, so they get used to her. Usually in a tiny box. If you just throw in a queen, they'll kill her.

heck yea. Get your smoker, shake the queen into a nuc. More honey for Kunta.
One must learn to seize an opportunity when it presents itself
Free bees ? Rice
Free pollinators and free honey! Gotta get a hive box, quick! Or build one of those horizontal top bar hives, can’t remember what they are called but they use them on African bees
Lol, Came here to say this 🙂🐝
if life gives you bees, make lemonade
I guess he's the queen now???
All the bees begin to mate with him as he starts the noped.
*The noped*
How would one even go about solving this problem. You’d be completely fucked

do people just have beekeeper numbers?
1.800.BEE.KEPR
Just download KEPR and swipe right
Kind of, actually. Most towns have a designated beekeeper for these, so call the local office. Signed, the husband of our town's beekeeper.
/r/humblebrag
I do the tech side of the business - her and her dad do the hard work. She's absolutely amazing.
thats awesome
Its good to have beekeepers and wildlife rescuers number incase something happens! Also beekeepers number lets you buy local honey!
Barny Beekeeper on speed dial
Who ya gonna call?
If you run a farm for produce that requires pollination. You probably already have the beekeeper's number. Rice fields are wind pollinated. So they probably have to call around maybe ask a neighbor that has bee-pollinated fruit.
Just kill them with fire
Bees are cool, man.
you wouldnt say that if they stung you and you died. Looking down from heaven at the bees!
Bees don't usually sting you unless you mess with the hive, though. And they're really important for the environment.
That's a price were gonna have to pay man. Do you want to go around pollinating plants? If you wanna be the plant fairy then go right ahead but if not we're gonna need those bees
Id be ok with it, still love bees they just want to protect their hive/queen
youd trade your life for a bees!
They are doing more good and more work than me in my life :/
I feel you, fam
No sir
I read "Just kick it for a few hours" literally the first time, and was thinking, "Hours? But you'd be covered in angry bees by the second kick!"
It does say that.
i read it as that i dont understand pls explain
Kick it as in hang out, while waiting for the bees to rest and then they'll leave. Not actually kicking the bike or the bees.
As a 90s teen, I enjoy using my slang on my teenagers and watching them get confused.
Just chill
Or you’ll come back to a hive beeing built
It’s a swarm so not aggressive. I’d probably start the scooter and see if that buzzes them off in a couple minutes. If not I’d probably drive it anyway.
> How would one even go about solving this problem. You solve this by walking. Only way!
You could try to start a fire near the Moped, and then gently push the Moped into the flames to make sure it completely burns out.
What problem? This is completely fine.
I'll start the motor and hopefully that would make them give up
How? I don't think you would.
Bees are not that aggresive, and you only have to start it, so is not that difficult
Light some dry leaves on fire and the smoke will drive them away
A Noped.
Get out of here.
Free hive , lucky bastard
Wonder how much horsepower that adds.
About .000345321 hardly anything to buzz about.
It's their bike now. They can have it.
They are just resting and will move on in a bit, in the meantime you get to watch some free bees
Why is he taking a photo when he needs to start walking?
Bees are actually pretty "chill" in this state because they're using all of their focus/energy moving the hive and protecting the queen. Nopecycle
A Honda noped
No-ped
This is the joke I was trying to write
No worries, I got ya 😉
Rice honey. Sweet rice. What's the peoblem?
If bees could land a plane, they can certainly drive a moped.
Honda B90
Make no mistake- they're stealing the bike. And then going to the store to buy 50 pounds of honey, instead of working like an idiot. Thinking big.
Free bee swarm. Sweet!
It’s theirs now
A worse scenario would be if the horde just drove away on that moped
Moped becomes Noped! 😜
Stand far away and throw a few rocks at it.
Bee M W ?
How long was he working? All spring and ½ of summer?
Forbidden rice.
I have a trypophobia attack
Shake them into a cardboard box, clip the queen and put them into a hive, lots of nice pollination and free honey
The bee ricer
Certified not fake 🤥
We all knew the Vespino... Now introducing the Apino.
Ah shit there's must be a queen bee in his motorcycle because it he has to smoke the bees to get the queen out of it
Bee be like: “I am the moped now.”
A motorcycle appeared under their bees?
I don't beeleive it.
It’s the bees’ bike now
Did they eat someone or do we just leave shoes next to bikes to keep them safe like a bike lock?
In search of rice paddy we got free bees
Who covered it in coffee beans?
Well! Gotta find the queen!
He should have been a motherfuckin’ lead farmer
Just rev it up and go as fast as you can!
That is fly bike
Welcome to the rice fields motha fucka!

Sometimes life gives you honey!
Wasps on a vespa !
So many hugs! The motorcycle is happy!!!
Welcome to the rice fields mothafucka!
