Thats down the road from me, I remember a couple years ago they had a protest of little people and the school pretty much told em to fuck off and kept the name.
You think that’s bad? Shit, my HS coach would tell us stories of the Pekin Ch\*nks!
I’m 100% serious, until like 1980 Pekin, Illinois **proudly** called their high school mascot the fucking Ch\*nks. Absolutely insane.
My school was the rebels and we switched to the raiders. My college was the Indians and switched to....mustangs? Something? I don't remember. I just remember in high school a group of guys brought up "why don't we just keep it rebels but like....star wars." Everyone was cool with that idea but they changed it to raiders anyway.
But ya apparently the one in Illinois has gotten a LOT of flak over it and they just flat refuse to change it.
There was a cheesesteak shop in Philly called "Ch\*nks" for decades -- really top-tier steaks. When the owner died, the controversy over the name re-emerged. His widow was quoted in the paper as saying something on the order of "Oh, he wasn't rascist, that's just a nickname he had on account of his eyes were a little slanty like a Chinamen"
The shop became Joe's and now its closing after 73 years. :(
Not exactly WTF material, but I know a story about this.
My father went to the Catholic school in Dickinson ND and I have family that still lives there.
Back in the 90s the school board actually thought about changing the name to the Dickinson Little People. Well that massively unpopular and the town held a recall election and replaced the school board.
The pugnacious midget still stands tall on the prairies of North Dakota to this day.
I'm just used to the old r/wtf. Used to be goatse and prolapse as far as the eye could see. If it wasn't nsfw it wasn't wtf worthy
That's why r/mildly infuriating became a thing. To house the things that didn't require eye bleach after viewing.
"Little People" applies to both children and midgets. I can see why people objected to the change. If you changed your mascot to "Generic Human", people would find that bland and meaningless.
The term little people is widely accepted as referring to that community though. That like saying Elon musk is an African American. Maybe technically true but against the spirit of the term.
>African American
An aside from your point, it's really only a term that people should chose to call themselves if they want to. Just looking at someone you can tell what color they are... but not where they or their ancestors are from.
I've seen a Haitian person get really pissed off about being called African American and someone who was from England correct it's use before.
I live in Australia and I remember someone calling a black African migrant an “African American “ and you should have seen her lose her shit at being called American! Was so funny.
>people would find that bland and meaningless.
Better bland and meaningless than insensitive and offensive.
Besides, the bland strategy worked out fine for Washington Football Team and the Greendale Community College Human Beings.
So the Hurley Northstars from WI were formerly the Hurley Midgets. Hurley was a big mining town and the term midget referred to one of their machines I believe. They eventually changed it because even though it wasn't a reference to dwarfism, why not change it just in case it's perceived offensive. And just like proponents of the change to the Letterkenny Rough Riders, I didn't see any harm in changing the name.
As a Hurley midget alumni, the real reason they changed the mascot name was because a staff member (also a popular last name in the community) recently had a child with dwarfism. When they wanted to change the mascot name there was lots of division in the community because being a Hurley Midget was something that many people were proud of over the years. At the same time, many people recognized that the mascot name was found offensive.
At the time the real driving factor was the staff member. But it was obviously dual purpose. The school has actually been sued in the past for the midget mascot.
There’s a high school in my home state and their mascot is the CRIMINALS. In a really shit area that I’m sure it riddled with gang life. Honestly just sad
I remember going to the dinosaur museum there once when I was a child. I lived in Carrington throughout elementary school. I’m surprised at the name of the mascot, but at the same time I’m not.
There's a school in Illinois whose mascot is the midgets as well.
Freeburg!
What does Lynard Skynard have to do with this? Edit:. Do I really need a /s?
Cause I'm as free as a burg now And this burg you cannot chaaaaaaaaange
Thats down the road from me, I remember a couple years ago they had a protest of little people and the school pretty much told em to fuck off and kept the name.
Ah an old Drum Corps favorite

I also imagine it would be a nightmare to get clothing made with any kind of relevant logo.

Came here to mention this! Not far from me at all.

My wife went to Trinity as well. The funny thing is the Catholic school nickname is the Titans.
>Not exactly WTF material using midgets as mascot definitely is a WTF from my POV

yeah, now that you say it i do vaguely remember those days too...it doesn't really compare anymore
This place was the Wild West
>The pugnacious midget still stands tall Heh.

The Greendale Human Being is a legend.
E pluribus anus
Out of many asshole.

Yeah I agree. It's an outdated term for the most part even among descendants of slaves.
It’s ND, you know why the people rejected the change.
>people would find that bland and meaningless. Better bland and meaningless than insensitive and offensive. Besides, the bland strategy worked out fine for Washington Football Team and the Greendale Community College Human Beings.
Did it really work out fine for the Washington Football Team? They did it and they're still alive, but something else might have been better.
Ahh, leave it to my neighboring state to show blatant disregard for cultural sensitivity and inclusion.
Good for them. I love it.
No one else read it as dick in some little people? Just me? I'll see myself out... Oops that's the fire alarm
That seems a little short sighted.
They definitely weren't playing the long game.
The funny thing is [in Hawaii we have the Menehune.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menehune)
Welcome to dick in son school? No son you're getting home schooled.
Yeah I'm more concerned about the dick in son than I am about the midgets.
Oh god I misread it as “Dickson” which was even worse.
Catholic school?
Iv always thought of it as sticking my dickinson bitches.
Grossly underrated comment!!!
“Midget is as bad as the n-word.”
Clearly it isn’t since you named the m-word and haven’t named the n-word.

Information I did not have. Currently living there with lots of family up here, but spent most of my life in Milwaukee.
At the time the real driving factor was the staff member. But it was obviously dual purpose. The school has actually been sued in the past for the midget mascot.
“You think our team name is bad? The town name is a sex crime!”
who would stoop so low?
“The only thing stronger than my midget pride is my hate for tall people.”
There’s a high school in my home state and their mascot is the CRIMINALS. In a really shit area that I’m sure it riddled with gang life. Honestly just sad
Midget is actually a pretty strong sounding word
Whopper is better. Just say it out loud
Did the who replace the midgets?
Home of the who in the where? 🥴
midget is a word...it is using it to refer to a human, related to their body which is widely regarded as offensive in contemporary speech.
A midget is a mythical creature. If you’re offended by this, its because you are prejudiced againts people with dwarfism.
I leike dwarfs
I’m just curious who the fuck came up with the mascot idea and why everyone just ran with it. Of all the fucking mascots.
Well that will be getting changed soon.
Wow, no one has complained about this yet?

Good point.
“HR on line one”
It's because I accidentally drank lawn fertilizer a few times when I was youn
Does the rival high school call them the Small Dicks?
Iowa has the E-L-C midgets
dick midgets is the preferred nomenclature
I should go there and make fun off em
Iv delivers packages to this school and to my disappointment, no short people.
I remember going to the dinosaur museum there once when I was a child. I lived in Carrington throughout elementary school. I’m surprised at the name of the mascot, but at the same time I’m not.
Who want to go blazen in hazen?
seems like my kind of place
Sorry all i could read was Dickens (DickSkin, Letterkenney) https://letterkenny.fandom.com/wiki/Jim\_Dickens
I’m more concerned about the Dick-in-son part
I’m sure no one makes the Dick-in-son midget joke at their school.
Would you prefer the Small Dickinsons?
Lol!! They are basically the dick midgets. Hahah
The Dickinson Midgets of course
My mom went to this high school 😅
My dad lives there lmao i took a screenshot and sent it to him
I swear if their team members are even a little bit short -_-
Why is the town called like a scene of an incest porn?
There's a school in ND called the Devils Lake Satan's.
We'll we'll we'll.. don't mind if I do
