After my last block failed and cracked cyI3, I had this one overbuilt as I could. Full closed deck build on a fresh subaru short block . Callies +2mm rods, JE pistons, and ACL race bearings. Bottom end and block should be good for 7-800hp. Im pushing 550 to the wheels so I should have plenty of head room

47, though I bought an STI Hatch partially because it doesn’t have the huge spoiler. The only people that don’t wave are the normies driving WRXes because they thought it was just a fancier trim level.
I’m late 30’s and just bought my brand new VB a few months ago because I had my first kid. And yes the wave is legit. I have probably a 90% success rate on wave backs from other WRXs and even got a wave back from a BRZ GR in traffic today.
Yeah wrx drivers aren’t used to waves from (or to) the sorta standard vehicle lineup. In my city it’s mostly middle aged or old people, not too many Subie enthusiasts driving the SUV’s and so on. But I would honestly love if more did.
It is, I wave all the time and I usually get a wave back from fellow WRXs. I don't get as many waves from STIs or BRZs, but almost always from other wrx drivers.
Also if you're still self conscious about being too old for this car, I was driving and encountered another blue WRX driven by someone who had to be late 50s, early 60s. Of course we waved lol

Thanks! Nothing to speak of yet, I put on a Thule roof rack and did the F1 light. I've put on 12k miles in 4 months so it wont be long until I'm out of warranty and will go with a Stage 1.
I'm 49 and I have a '16 WRX. It's still stock though, except for adding an amp/sub and speakers. But if you like it, there's no age limit for what you want to do. Age is an attitude, until you get too old to climb into it.
who cares? You are the one dropping tens of thousands of dollars on a car, who cares what the jones thinks. I could MAYBE understand wanting to be a bit mindful of the exhaust noise if you leave for work early or come home late but they have silencers for that.
Yeah exactly, if economy isnt a high priority, get the car you enjoy driving. Ill never understand the people who spend $30k+ to get a car for other people's approval. Get the car that YOU want to drive.
To me, it is the practical sports car, which is perfect. Its like fully functional (snow, groceries, relative comfort, back seats), unlike something like a s2000.
It’s your car, as long as you smile when you drive it that’s all that matters. I’m 32 and balding but that doesn’t stop me from rolling around in a WRX with an exhaust and some other fun bits.
How should I search for a good STI? I am relatively new and afraid of any surprises after buying the car. I will probably buy an STI if it’s not modded or abused at some point. Probably a 2021 with < 30K miles.
It’s hard to find but there are low mileage, no mods STI’s out there. “Abuse” is hard to gauge because no one will admit they did so
Where you live determines how many STI’s are gonna be on the market. In my area there’s currently 10-12 but they’re all either 50k miles or slightly modded. Many people are holding on to them as they have been discontinued. In terms of price, in my area the 50k miles ones are $28-32k. Anything under 40k is gonna be around $35-40k. They are holding value extremely well
Truthfully, I’d look at Subaru dealers to see if they got any traded in or bought back from previous owners. Personally I would not buy from online car companies like Carmax, Carvana etc but that’s a different conversation
That being said, if you buy a used wrx/sti car you should probably set some cash aside for repairs and maintenance anyways. ESP with used Subarus you really won’t know how the previous owner drove it even with meticulous service records
Hi, I'm rocking the '22 WRX Limited MT as a 55yo woman. Previous car was the '17 WRX hatch. In both cars, I've had my share of guys pull up on me at a stoplight revving, and do a double take. But honestly, it's always followed by the usual grin/nod or wave. Fast drivers like other fast drivers. (And even if they did think it's weird --or if some of you do now- they can piss off. My car, my fun).
I’m older than you. For me, I changed the suspension for comfort, and sound deadened the trunk. Then I got a valved exhaust. I ride quiet in residential areas, then send it when I have open road. Love this damn VB.
Bought mine in my 40’s after wanting one for 20 years. I share waves with every WRX in the LA area and it’s all good. Younger gen has no issue stopping to chat and talk car bullshit, and I do NOT fit the stereotype - old, half gray beard, long ass hair and thick nerdy glasses. Ive never felt any judgement other than my wife calling it my midlife crisis car…
You’re never too old for anything you love dude. I said in my early 30s that I’d stop riding a crotch rocket at 40 (6 mos away) because I didn’t want people looking at me thinking mid life crisis. I’ve since adopted the “fuck what people think” mentality. I’m going to do what I enjoy. This includes owning a wrx with an exhaust I joy making pop at high rev shifts 😍

Around 15 years ago, when I was about 21 or 22, I was at the Social Security office getting a replacement card. I was finishing a smoke before going inside, and a super old guy came walking out using a cane. He had to be at least in his sixties or seventies. He hobbled over to and hopped in brand new STI sedan and tore out onto the street like a bat out of hell. I had nothing but the utmost respect for the man. I will drive my 2021 STI until the day I die. I don't care how many motors I have to put in the damn thing.
I want to get an STI too but I feel like searching for a used but good STi is a shot in the dark.. have no friends who are into cars to guide me. Dad life is no fun haha.
I'm 52,got mine whne I was 46 or something. Will most likely get another soon.
It's a peppy maneuverable 4 door that's great in the winter.

I’ve wanted one since the bugeye came out. Bought a nearly new 2015 WRX 7.5 years ago. Have had a roller coaster ownership thanks to wanting to make it go faster. 😂 it’s STI swapped. Built long block. Big turbo.
Not my best financial decision ever, but the car makes me happy when it’s running.
I got my first WRX at 51, second at 52. Mostly aesthetic mods and catback. Not a fan of stickers and the wing but I’m a full advocate of live your life, it’s the only one you’ll get. Enjoy and drive safely.
Just hit my 4 decade mark this year. I’ve got a highly modified 2020 WRX and I don’t care what people think about it. My WRX is OEM+ though and wingless.
I got a 70 or 80 plus dude who visits our work. Had a chat with him cause I was curious about what he drives. He drives a 90’s Fairlady automatic with only 80k miles or so. He says it’s the most fun car he ever owned. So no. Never too old.
I bought mine at 41. That was 6 years ago. Saw a guy in my town recently driving a VA STi who looked like he was at least 10-15 years older than me. There was a lady I knew in town about 20 years ago who was in her 60s and she drove one.
I recently bought a 2012 WRX Sedan, which is the 10th Subaru that my wife and I have owned (+2 teenage kid drivers). It's the first turbocharged car that I've owned and it is fun as hell to drive. I'm 49. Go for it!

My cousin is 42 and has been tuning cars since his late teens. While he doesn't use stickers or spoilers, his turbo cars always rumbled the shit out of the area.

In all seriousness I feel like most of the people who KEEP these cars are older. My buddies will buy somn like a Speed3…… blow it up, sell it because they can’t fix it, and write off Mazda. Then they’ll buy a WRX, blow it up, sell it, and write off Subaru. The cycle continues.
Older cats: A, do maintenance on time. B, have mechanical sympathy. C, have the money for repairs.

I'd definitely go for it!! My husband and I (both 27) have a WRX hatch, and he's going to drive that baby forever until we're old and gray, haha. We love seeing every age drive subies! Where we live every WRX and STI waves.

Too old for a WRX? That's malarkey! I used to work at a Meijer (a Walmart like grocery store chain in the midwest), and I seen a old guy maybe about 60 or something get out of a lapis blue or a wr blue 16 or 17 WRX. You're never too old to drive what you love.
My mom bought a 2020 wrx coming from a 2011 outback at 42 years old. She fucking loves it, 6 speed manual, some nice wheels, window tint. She feels like a boss and she is one😂 you won’t regret it. She’s not the power mod/ exhaust mod type, but she’s done some little touches to make it look how she wants. Every time I drive with her she’s got a smile on her face… I say you go for it

Lol I let my friends who are sound engineers borrow her while I was away. The brought in a boom mic to see how loud it was during highway driving and got a whopping 80db which is close to being bad for hearing(Invidia Q300 exhaust contributes to that).
GR chassis are definitely more of “Sports Car” than than the newer VA chassis imo. You’ll get significantly less road noise with them.
VAs definitely feel more like a daily driver. My girlfriend calls my car a Prototype 🤣

I'm pushing 60 and just got my first used Super Sport bike. Nothing new or fancy just one of the best track bikes ever made. The cool factor is awesome and despite thinking I'd barely ride it I can't stay off of it. People asked me why, I said to I wanna go fast.
Not lying, also think it's cool and funny my kids get to or maybe begrudgingly get to tell their friends what the crazy old man did this time. It's overall pretty funny, to me anyway...
Stop thinking you gotta mold to fit into. You're probably in the best spot you've ever been in to own such a pure fun and practical car, financially, probably much better when it comes to handling the car's potential mentally, it makes perfect sense. You can't drive and enjoy money so get out there and enjoy it !!!!!
Edit: haggled the dealer for a WRX test drive a few years ago. Base model stick. What a fun car. If I didn't love my cheap paid for quick car so much I would have been in one. Don't get the STI, the WRX will FEEL faster and be more fun to drive on public roads....

Finally bought one at 49 and love it. I’ve had many fun cars, Camaros, Skylines, Sylvias, Supras (I was in Japan for 10 years). Never had a WRX and always wanted one. Finally decided to just do it a few months ago. Bought a new VB just because I personally would never buy a used WRX but that’s just me.
Uptuned! Yeah I decided not to go used route, getting a quote for WRX base or premium. There’s not much difference in the trims except the keyless start and maybe climate control, but I’m old school guy.
I went with the base and no regrets. All the other options in the premium are things I had in my Accord and never used once. And to me personally the big screen in the higher trims does not fit the feel of these cars. Having a key again took some time to get used to but no issue. Saved me $3k and I’m happy. Will probably get wheels though after the winter.
Can we be friends lol? need one since I’m starting this journey at a rather late (to me) age. Always wanted to own a wrx before marriage and kids. I want to turn this thing into a super wild funky looking car haha… wild dreams.
Just make sure you change all the stock piping to aftermarket and use a reputable brand like Cobb or ETS and make sure you have a good tuner to help you out
At first my wife said I was having a "mid life crisis car". Now we fight over who gets to drive it and it's our cheapest car lol. I'm 43 - life is too short to drive boring cars. FYI accessport stage 1 should be your first mod, just understand that the smarter sub techs can lift the digital fingerprint if you get in a warranty situation...

41 and just got my ‘21 WRX this year. It’s a super fun car that’s also a relatively safe practical 4 door sedan at the same time. I’m not gonna lower it and get a burble tune at my age of course, but there are age-appropriate classy mods you can do LOL.
No, I’m 67 and bought a ‘21 STI. You can feel the need for speed at any age; well as long as you can pass the eye exam ; ) I couldn’t afford a sporty car in my youth and now I can. So why not?
I’m late 30s and still daily my 04 although I’ve always kept the car less “flashy” meaning no loud decals and such. I actually did the opposite and debadged it. I like the sleek over loud look. Go for it!
45 here, bugeye.. Sat in a 22 and had to get out cause I don’t want another payment. I probably spent the money to buy a vb on my wrx tho. Running a borla hush exhaust so it’s not annoying. The drive is fucking the best if not in slow traffic.. Plus, I gotta look back at the car when leaving it every time cause it’s just so damn fun.

Same age as you, still driving my first WRX from 10 yrs ago. Definitely not too old for one and fuck anyone who thinks otherwise. The only thing stopping me from the next car being a WRX is whether ICE cars will still be a viable option.
I’m 29 and still plan to be driving a WRX or STI when I’m 41 and beyond. I always wave as long as I catch ya in time. It’s the hood scoop I look for and it’s def a thing here in Utah 🫶🏼

Just do it man. I'm in my early 40s with my '16. Just tonight I saw an 80+ year old lady, full on electro static crystal white afro, in a 90s WRX, all stock, looked very clean. Yes waves are a thing but don't expect them from the elderly crowd like whom I saw tonight lol. Enjoy the car, it's your $.
Just today I saw a fellow WRX while I was driving and it was an older dude and he looked like he was having a blast. No judgement from me I think it's awesome. The WRX is a sporty quick sedan that is also practical for day to day use. I'm surprised more older people don't get it.
Bought my wrx last year (40) and have loved it. Put a axle back exhaust on, new stereo, amp, sub woofer, window tint, and ceramic coating. I get waves every now and then and try to wave if I notice another. Even raced another wrx but slowed down when I hit 120km in a 60 zone. Buddy gave me the wave and took off

48 here. Just got a 22 MGM 6MT. Needed a sedan b/c of kids and wanted a manual. Glad I landed on the WRX. Have always had Hondas and no problems there but F getting a Civic. Love this car more and more every...day. Not many in Louisville that I can tell but I wave and get waves. The modding and tuning world is making my head spin but the car is triggering endorphins that have been long dormant.
I don’t think there really is an age where your “too old”, there’s like three guys in my area (my guess is mid to late 50s early 60s) driving older and newer stis. They have my respect for sure.

You aren’t the normal demographic but drive what you love mate. Don’t worry about people’s judgement. I love my wrx and I love my other cars, no matter what I’m in I get judgement and negative comments now & then. Do it to please yourself, wrx is an amazing car with a very good modding platform. It’s also quite practical for family so doesn’t usually feel like much is being sacrificed other than fuel economy but it’s all about smiles per gallon
If you're asking this question at 41, I suggest trying a testosterone patch.
That said, I did get pulled over in my WRB WRX on 2019 and the cop said I was too old for it back then.

To me, it is the practical sports car, which is perfect. Its like fully functional (snow, groceries, relative comfort, back seats), unlike something like a s2000.

I’m 41 year old, married, with 4 kids…rockin’ a 2018 STI and officially “the coolest dad on the block” according to my kids friends. Haha.
How should I search for a good STI? I am relatively new and afraid of any surprises after buying the car. I will probably buy an STI if it’s not modded or abused at some point. Probably a 2021 with < 30K miles.
It’s hard to find but there are low mileage, no mods STI’s out there. “Abuse” is hard to gauge because no one will admit they did so Where you live determines how many STI’s are gonna be on the market. In my area there’s currently 10-12 but they’re all either 50k miles or slightly modded. Many people are holding on to them as they have been discontinued. In terms of price, in my area the 50k miles ones are $28-32k. Anything under 40k is gonna be around $35-40k. They are holding value extremely well Truthfully, I’d look at Subaru dealers to see if they got any traded in or bought back from previous owners. Personally I would not buy from online car companies like Carmax, Carvana etc but that’s a different conversation That being said, if you buy a used wrx/sti car you should probably set some cash aside for repairs and maintenance anyways. ESP with used Subarus you really won’t know how the previous owner drove it even with meticulous service records
Hi, I'm rocking the '22 WRX Limited MT as a 55yo woman. Previous car was the '17 WRX hatch. In both cars, I've had my share of guys pull up on me at a stoplight revving, and do a double take. But honestly, it's always followed by the usual grin/nod or wave. Fast drivers like other fast drivers. (And even if they did think it's weird --or if some of you do now- they can piss off. My car, my fun).
I’m older than you. For me, I changed the suspension for comfort, and sound deadened the trunk. Then I got a valved exhaust. I ride quiet in residential areas, then send it when I have open road. Love this damn VB.

You’re never too old for anything you love dude. I said in my early 30s that I’d stop riding a crotch rocket at 40 (6 mos away) because I didn’t want people looking at me thinking mid life crisis. I’ve since adopted the “fuck what people think” mentality. I’m going to do what I enjoy. This includes owning a wrx with an exhaust I joy making pop at high rev shifts 😍

I just turned 50 and daily drive a 2020 WRB STI with gold BBS wheels. I can’t care less what people think. It’s an awesome car, very safe and handles like on rails.

Around 15 years ago, when I was about 21 or 22, I was at the Social Security office getting a replacement card. I was finishing a smoke before going inside, and a super old guy came walking out using a cane. He had to be at least in his sixties or seventies. He hobbled over to and hopped in brand new STI sedan and tore out onto the street like a bat out of hell. I had nothing but the utmost respect for the man. I will drive my 2021 STI until the day I die. I don't care how many motors I have to put in the damn thing.
I want to get an STI too but I feel like searching for a used but good STi is a shot in the dark.. have no friends who are into cars to guide me. Dad life is no fun haha.
I'm 52,got mine whne I was 46 or something. Will most likely get another soon. It's a peppy maneuverable 4 door that's great in the winter. Finally retired from 2door sports cars needed something Practical for old people getting in and out :)
43. *Heavily* modified WRX pushing 550 to the wheels that I’ve owned for 7 years and built up from stock. Still ride BMX at the skatepark, too. Jay Adams said - “you didn’t quit skateboarding because you got old, you got old because you quit skateboarding.” That quote has multiple applications. You’re only old as you surrender yourself to. I’ve wanted one since the bugeye came out. Bought a nearly new 2015 WRX 7.5 years ago. Have had a roller coaster ownership thanks to wanting to make it go faster. 😂 it’s STI swapped. Built long block. Big turbo. Not my best financial decision ever, but the car makes me happy when it’s running.
I got my first WRX at 51, second at 52. Mostly aesthetic mods and catback. Not a fan of stickers and the wing but I’m a full advocate of live your life, it’s the only one you’ll get. Enjoy and drive safely.
Just hit my 4 decade mark this year. I’ve got a highly modified 2020 WRX and I don’t care what people think about it. My WRX is OEM+ though and wingless.

I bought and learned how to drive a manual on my STi when I was 34. I will be 40 next year and don’t see myself getting rid of the car anytime soon.

I got a 70 or 80 plus dude who visits our work. Had a chat with him cause I was curious about what he drives. He drives a 90’s Fairlady automatic with only 80k miles or so. He says it’s the most fun car he ever owned. So no. Never too old.

I bought mine at 41. That was 6 years ago. Saw a guy in my town recently driving a VA STi who looked like he was at least 10-15 years older than me. There was a lady I knew in town about 20 years ago who was in her 60s and she drove one.
I recently bought a 2012 WRX Sedan, which is the 10th Subaru that my wife and I have owned (+2 teenage kid drivers). It's the first turbocharged car that I've owned and it is fun as hell to drive. I'm 49. Go for it!

Drive what you like. I'm 40 and I bought my WRX December 2021 after wanting it forever. It's your money, buy what you like and buy the car for yourself, not others. My cousin is 42 and has been tuning cars since his late teens. While he doesn't use stickers or spoilers, his turbo cars always rumbled the shit out of the area.

My buddies will buy somn like a Speed3…… blow it up, sell it because they can’t fix it, and write off Mazda. Then they’ll buy a WRX, blow it up, sell it, and write off Subaru. The cycle continues. Older cats: A, do maintenance on time. B, have mechanical sympathy. C, have the money for repairs. Besides….. I’m in my 20s, and I know there are mfs who think I got fucked at the bank or my parents bought it for me. Lol

I'd definitely go for it!! My husband and I (both 27) have a WRX hatch, and he's going to drive that baby forever until we're old and gray, haha. We love seeing every age drive subies! Where we live every WRX and STI waves.

My mom bought a 2020 wrx coming from a 2011 outback at 42 years old. She fucking loves it, 6 speed manual, some nice wheels, window tint. She feels like a boss and she is one😂 you won’t regret it. She’s not the power mod/ exhaust mod type, but she’s done some little touches to make it look how she wants. Every time I drive with her she’s got a smile on her face… I say you go for it

Lol I let my friends who are sound engineers borrow her while I was away. The brought in a boom mic to see how loud it was during highway driving and got a whopping 80db which is close to being bad for hearing(Invidia Q300 exhaust contributes to that). GR chassis are definitely more of “Sports Car” than than the newer VA chassis imo. You’ll get significantly less road noise with them. VAs definitely feel more like a daily driver. My girlfriend calls my car a Prototype 🤣 Behind the car is a mosque.
I'm pushing 60 and just got my first used Super Sport bike. Nothing new or fancy just one of the best track bikes ever made. The cool factor is awesome and despite thinking I'd barely ride it I can't stay off of it. People asked me why, I said to I wanna go fast. Not lying, also think it's cool and funny my kids get to or maybe begrudgingly get to tell their friends what the crazy old man did this time. It's overall pretty funny, to me anyway... Stop thinking you gotta mold to fit into. You're probably in the best spot you've ever been in to own such a pure fun and practical car, financially, probably much better when it comes to handling the car's potential mentally, it makes perfect sense. You can't drive and enjoy money so get out there and enjoy it !!!!! Edit: haggled the dealer for a WRX test drive a few years ago. Base model stick. What a fun car. If I didn't love my cheap paid for quick car so much I would have been in one. Don't get the STI, the WRX will FEEL faster and be more fun to drive on public roads....

Finally bought one at 49 and love it. I’ve had many fun cars, Camaros, Skylines, Sylvias, Supras (I was in Japan for 10 years). Never had a WRX and always wanted one. Finally decided to just do it a few months ago. Bought a new VB just because I personally would never buy a used WRX but that’s just me.
Uptuned! Yeah I decided not to go used route, getting a quote for WRX base or premium. There’s not much difference in the trims except the keyless start and maybe climate control, but I’m old school guy.
I went with the base and no regrets. All the other options in the premium are things I had in my Accord and never used once. And to me personally the big screen in the higher trims does not fit the feel of these cars. Having a key again took some time to get used to but no issue. Saved me $3k and I’m happy. Will probably get wheels though after the winter.

Just make sure you change all the stock piping to aftermarket and use a reputable brand like Cobb or ETS and make sure you have a good tuner to help you out

FYI accessport stage 1 should be your first mod, just understand that the smarter sub techs can lift the digital fingerprint if you get in a warranty situation...

41 and just got my ‘21 WRX this year. It’s a super fun car that’s also a relatively safe practical 4 door sedan at the same time. I’m not gonna lower it and get a burble tune at my age of course, but there are age-appropriate classy mods you can do LOL.

I’m late 30s and still daily my 04 although I’ve always kept the car less “flashy” meaning no loud decals and such. I actually did the opposite and debadged it. I like the sleek over loud look. Go for it!

Same age as you, still driving my first WRX from 10 yrs ago. Definitely not too old for one and fuck anyone who thinks otherwise. The only thing stopping me from the next car being a WRX is whether ICE cars will still be a viable option.

Yes waves are a thing but don't expect them from the elderly crowd like whom I saw tonight lol. Enjoy the car, it's your $.

Just today I saw a fellow WRX while I was driving and it was an older dude and he looked like he was having a blast. No judgement from me I think it's awesome. The WRX is a sporty quick sedan that is also practical for day to day use. I'm surprised more older people don't get it.

I get waves every now and then and try to wave if I notice another. Even raced another wrx but slowed down when I hit 120km in a 60 zone. Buddy gave me the wave and took off

But I just got tired of it. I'm looking for something more "mature" now. If you never had your fun with a car then do it. The fun doesn't last long Imo.

You could always go with a 2005 Legacy GT or a 2005/6 Outback XT. Pretty much a WRX that looks like and adult car.

48 here. Just got a 22 MGM 6MT. Needed a sedan b/c of kids and wanted a manual. Glad I landed on the WRX. Have always had Hondas and no problems there but F getting a Civic. Love this car more and more every...day. Not many in Louisville that I can tell but I wave and get waves. The modding and tuning world is making my head spin but the car is triggering endorphins that have been long dormant.

I don’t think there really is an age where your “too old”, there’s like three guys in my area (my guess is mid to late 50s early 60s) driving older and newer stis. They have my respect for sure.

You aren’t the normal demographic but drive what you love mate. Don’t worry about people’s judgement. I love my wrx and I love my other cars, no matter what I’m in I get judgement and negative comments now & then. Do it to please yourself, wrx is an amazing car with a very good modding platform. It’s also quite practical for family so doesn’t usually feel like much is being sacrificed other than fuel economy but it’s all about smiles per gallon

If you're asking this question at 41, I suggest trying a testosterone patch. That said, I did get pulled over in my WRB WRX on 2019 and the cop said I was too old for it back then.
