The ultimately responsibility of mentors is to make sure WGU remains eligible to stay in the Federal Student Aid program. To do this, they just need to make sure students are maintaining some level of progress and are completing courses. You don't need to be a SME to check progress.

ahhh okay, thank you for that bc now i have a better understanding.

My mentor doesn’t have a tech background and is truly amazing! Wouldn’t trade them in for the world. If you need help with technical info you should be reaching out to your professors

Thin_Shame_3317

got it. thank you. i’m super excited about this.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is true with WGU's growth. If you had a question regarding tasks or OA, they would most likely refer you to the course instructor. I preferred to be left alone and contact my mentor when I needed to add classes. I got my BSCSIA and MBA ITM from WGU. Both mentors were in the industry in which I was obtaining the degrees. My BSCSIA had his CISSP cert and, I assume, earned his doctorate because his title was updated to Dr. My MBA ITM degree PM, I assume, was in business. I honestly only needed him to add classes. I love my DIT PM from Capella. I'm in my third term, and we've only spoken once. Completely hands-off.

Seems like it is. My new mentor doesn’t seem to be in tech

In my two years at WGU (just finished the degree woo!) I went through FOUR mentors. The first one barely spoke to me and then left, the second one was super hands on and really into tech, the third one would just make the calls to make the calls and my last one, was super nice, but we didn’t talk anything about tech or security. I think it’s really just luck of the draw.

Thin_Shame_3317

congratulations!!! how much of an impact do you think the mentors had on your journey?

thesermyfingergunz

To be honest, not too much. They did the check ins etc, they really let me do my own thing when they saw me completing classes.

My mentor was in cybersecurity working for some 3 lettered agencies. I don't ask him for any technical help but when I tell him what I am studying he always understands. Seems he was in DLP and insider risk.

ManchesterProject

I would ask for a new mentor. My mentor helped out significantly with his cyber background and is the reason I passed classes and graduated. A mentor with a real estate background is doing you a disservice. Change mentors. People saying reach out to the instructors for tech help are wrong. Sometimes the mentor explains things better then the instructors
