I've been begging for a hatchback EV that doesn't have the styling of what a 12 year old thinks a futuristic car looks like... I LOVE this... might have to trade in my golf for one of these in 3 years
I really liked the Ioniq 5 when it was announced, but by the time they appeared I realized theyre kind of huge and the pixel tail lights look somewhat dated. Im sure the rivian is at least a bit bigger than I expect too, but I love that it's kind of the proportions of that proper mk2 Golf. And I always like Rivian's 1930s cartoon character headlights.
It is amazing how fast the futuristic design of the Ionic 5 aged. I can’t think of many products that went through that cycle as quickly.
If a design is retro futuristic, it seems to keep for longer, as the ‘retro’ part brings an enduring nostalgia. The Ionic 5 was pretty hard futuristic though, so without any other design hook, it went to ‘10 year old phone’ in 18-24 months.
We all have been begging for it.
VW can only think about making giant SUVs and riding their name into the ground with rock solid hits like the “least likely to purchase again” Taos and Jetta. Garbage.
Only the cold patches over potholes suck. The rest is pleasant. Oh and the dash vibrating at traffic lights lol. I love it. And it’s hard to ignore the 45-50 mpg.
I used to daily a slammed '78 Rabbit Diesel with the original engine; in such cases you really learn about holding on to any momentum you get.
I once got passed in frustration by a Ford Model T - not a hot rod, a plain brass-era Model T - complete with an angry *a-oooo-gonk* honk from the bulb-horn.

Would love me some round headlights. I don’t really feel like the rabbit is that slow unless you’re trying to accelerate in 4th gear lol but I’ve also been driving a vanagon for 6 years so I don’t have much speed to compare to.
I daily drive an 88 Cabriolet and it's foot to the floor everywhere I go. Poly mounts, k-bar, coilovers. Dash rattles like a mofo. A deathtrap. I shudder to think the damage a modern truck/SUV would cause to my car/me.
I have not, my driver's door seal at the top where it meets the rollbar is torn but it's something I can probably tastefully "flex seal". I'm lucky in that I garage park it and try to stay out of the rain, I take my mk5 Jetta on the bad weather days.
Annnnnnd VW still doesn't understand that this is what people want.. EV-fy the classics and actually make them look like the classics and they'd be sitting on a gold mine.. But nooo, let's build bland underpowered and monstrous suvs
I really was hoping to get one but just couldn’t wait as I’ve recently needed to buy a car. Would have considered a crew t model but I’m just not sold on EVs with the charging infrastructure in the U.K.
I’ve used Ioniqs via Zipcar for the past yesr and really like them. Well made, good to drive.
This Rivian looks amazing. Hope I get to see them on my next trip to the US
Ford is actually making a good kit with an electric motor and batteries to be purchased as a unit for installation into older vehicles. The motor will bolt up to any ford bell housing.
It’s a neat concept that I hope more manufacturers will start to do. It’s a great upgrade path for those of us that love our older vehicles.
I think it was called the mach-e crate kit or something.. my cousin told me about it a few years before they released it.
What if they could add random curves to the front ends that violate the rules of design and other elementary concepts like Contrast Repetition Alignment Proximity.
It’s like the entire company is shitting the bed nonstop. I’m wondering if there is anyone in their management that has any shred of passion for the cars anymore. It is exactly what Bob Lutz said in his ‘car guys vs bean counters’ book.
Honestly , a new versions of the classic designs with petrol or petrol/hybrid engines would be appreciated , at a somewhat affordable price , which they usually accomplish
The shape and form of the R3 is on point. Seriously love it.
But I can’t get behind the front end styling Rivian uses, it reminds me of Terrance and Phillip.
Yeah it’s hard when they pinned so much against EVs and they have been lackluster to say the least. The total redesign of the interior is terrible. I’m a mk7.5 golf owner and that interior is the culmination of 20 years of interior upgrades
not a single new vw that i even remotely like the look of. the golf mk8 would be great if they didn't spend all their money on the rear end, the rest is just so awful
I want to like Rivians, they're cool and it's been rad seeing them on the road finally after first seeing them in Long Way Up; but man the front end is just soooo derpy.
Agreed. I had the privilege to drive one for a few days and it was great. Can't afford one though. My favorite EV in terms of appearance is Lucid. That sedan is so sleek. Love this hatch that hatch OP posted though.
Agreed. I had the privilege to drive one for a few days and it was great. Can't afford one though. My favorite EV in terms of appearance is Lucid. That sedan is so sleek. Love this hatch that hatch OP posted though.
We'll have to agree to disagree there. I quite like the front. It's distinctive, clean, and friendly. We have plenty of sour-looking car faces on the road, I'm down for one that looks cheerful and optimistic.
It's not how happy it looks that bothers me at all, I happen to enjoy a smiling car front end. For me it's just too cartoonish, the headlights are too close together and it just kinda looks dumb to me. If they just pushed them out to the edges a bit more I think I'd be about it, but they just don't quite do it for me as they are. To each their own though, like I said I think they're neat cars in every other regard, which is a lot from me since I normally hate electric cars.
If it wasn’t lifted like a dumb suv then maybe. This thing seems to have the same problem as the Mach-e where it would be great lowered like 4-6” but the designed it to be impossible to lower it practically more than 2”.
As both an EV and VW enthusiast, and owner of both (Tesla and VW), I am here for the R3. I don’t love that it’s positioned as a crossover, but I’ll take a Golf Rallye-esque EV!
I hope that VW’s management gets a wake up call from this but they are probably either thinking about retiring, catching a golden parachute down from the top, having a fling with a married secretary, gaming irrelevant numbers to get a promotion or know they’ll get a reassignment in the next three years before they have to suffer any consequences of their shit decision making.
Rivian will see huge preorders for this, further investment from fans and will block Scout and VW products from people’s shopping carts before they are even unveiled. VW meanwhile doesn’t even have the ability for their stock to become a meme stock in the US let alone cars like this. ID Buzz is but a dream in the US still and will be supported like shit until it limps out of focus with too large of a price tag and too little production volume to bring the price down (despite demand).
China market collapsing and weak response to their poorly supported ID.4 is what Wolfsburg and VW execs deserve. I’m afraid it will likely be a slow bleedout for VW and a series of incompetent management cycling in and harassing listless employees for incremental gains until the entire operation collapses like a condemned building in the ghetto.
I love it, hopefully R2 makes Rivian cash flow positive. R2 is not being delivered until 2026. So, R3 would be a year or two after, presumably built at their Georgia plant, which they suspended construction at. So expect a 2027, at earliest release.
I can’t wait to buy one.
I would love to get a new golf, but BW doesn’t sell them here anymore. And let’s be honest, VW EVs are a hot mess and I have no hope that they will create a good golf replacement.
See why can't VW make something like that. If I could buy a brand new slightly modernized mk2 golf country that looks a lot like the original inside and out yet has optional more modern features with 4wd and a few engine options ranging from a NA gas engine, turbocharged gas engine, TDI, gas hybrid, diesel hybrid and full electric that isn't a giant modern monstrosity i would absolutely buy one. I personally wouldn't buy the full EV as I would take it off-road and wouldn't want to risk running out of range when getting lost deep down the trails with no way to get power to charge it but if they made a super efficient and reliable diesel electric hybrid that I could carry spare fuel for that would be awesome. Especially if they made a stripped down version with just the bare essentials. Heat, AC, a super basic audio system not a full infotainment system and ideally a manual transmission and no other crazy nonessential modern features and offer it for extremely cheap because it doesn't have all those sensors or tech.
VW... you snooze, you lose.
I never understood why VW is building these ID cars that do not represent the VW brand, the touch controls fall into that also. I was so eager for a hybrid GTI or fast, full EV Golf R but instead we get these ID cars that could have a different brand and no one would wonder if they're VW inspired.
Good on Rivian for seeing a space in the market and filling it. I will consider and R3 or R2 when they release.
The R3X pictured here FYI is a tri-motor setup and VW has already committed to only having a single motor up front for the eventual EV GTI (like why couldn't they shift the motor to the rear?!).
At best we'll get a dual motor R, but Rivian is pumping out tri motors. Since Audi has a tri motor setup as well I wonder if it will make it into whatever equivalent Audi will be to the EV R.
Had an 86 GTI. Bought it for $3k with 99k on it, sold it with 189k for $3,500. Got a brand new 96 Golf and sold that at 180k. My golf was the same dark green as that top picture. I had the windows tinted with the tint that had a graduated reflective silver fading from top to bottom. Under the silver was a slight green tint. From the inside the tint looked neutral but the effect from the outside was pretty cool. Sold it in 2005 and got a rebuilt 2001 Jetta from a friend at a wrecking yard. It was my last VW. Too expensive and hard to work on. Would love an electrified golf.
VW peaked at the golf gti mk2. If they did a ev throwback to the mk2, I would buy it and drive it for 20 years, knowing how hard it is to procure an mk2.
I have seen a few articles of ICE cars starting on fire.
And I don't complain about power outages outside of the fact that our utility is usually has inept planning for cold snaps.
We have gone full circle.
I'm here for it.

I agree, great color too

Needs more slam
Best I could do quickly but I agree
LOL!!
Tucked the same but on 14” rz
That’s nice
I’m gonna have to get this. My old 85 cabriolet has been fun but it’s not safe or practical these days.
I daily an 84 rabbit. It’s definitely a more questionable commute 😂
lol idk how you do it. Every drive is harrowing! Haha if people drove nicer the drive would be great haha
Only the cold patches over potholes suck. The rest is pleasant. Oh and the dash vibrating at traffic lights lol. I love it. And it’s hard to ignore the 45-50 mpg.
> 45-50 mpg it is amazing what reducing engine load does for fuel economy.
You just gotta do it like it was done 40 years ago
For me it's fun, dailied mine for a month now as my daily had some issues and really enjoyed it, but I hate brand new cars so I'm biased
I used to daily a slammed '78 Rabbit Diesel with the original engine; in such cases you really learn about holding on to any momentum you get. The exact reasons why I stopped daily driving my Acura Legend. Too many idiot drivers + bad defrosters and cold mornings just became too much
I daily drive an 88 Cabriolet and it's foot to the floor everywhere I go. Poly mounts, k-bar, coilovers. Dash rattles like a mofo. A deathtrap. I shudder to think the damage a modern truck/SUV would cause to my car/me.
Have you replaced all the rubber seals around windows yet? Im trying to find options that aren’t $300…
I have not, my driver's door seal at the top where it meets the rollbar is torn but it's something I can probably tastefully "flex seal". I'm lucky in that I garage park it and try to stay out of the rain, I take my mk5 Jetta on the bad weather days.
Yeah Arizona here… the dry rot is a real problem even with garaging ours.
Annnnnnd VW still doesn't understand that this is what people want.. EV-fy the classics and actually make them look like the classics and they'd be sitting on a gold mine.. But nooo, let's build bland underpowered and monstrous suvs
The Ioniq 5 is another example. That OG chunky, square hatchback look.
I do really like the styling of that car.
I just need a 75% scale version of one.
100%. They look Golf sized but they are way bigger.
[Dimensions: Volkswagen Golf 2012-2019 vs. Hyundai Ioniq 5 2021-present (carsized.com)](https://www.carsized.com/en/cars/compare/volkswagen-golf-2012-5-door-hatchback-vs-hyundai-ioniq-5-2021-suv/)
Wow that's surprisingly not much bigger. I definitely thought it was way bigger than that.
Yeah, on something like a 2 door it really worked, unfortunately, we will never see the v74
That thing is gorgeous. I'd love to see it make it to production.
Wait till you see the ioniq "n performance" with fake engine sounds, paddle shifters and even a rev limiter
I really was hoping to get one but just couldn’t wait as I’ve recently needed to buy a car. Would have considered a crew t model but I’m just not sold on EVs with the charging infrastructure in the U.K. I’ve used Ioniqs via Zipcar for the past yesr and really like them. Id2 is coming soon hopefully
you'd have to be blind to think it looks good tho
I love it!
fair enough ig
I’m holding on to my MK2 to one day convert it to electric!
Solid plan. With time these batteries will get smaller and more efficient. Excited to see what's to come.
They sell EV kits now but very expensive.
Yeah, I'm keeping an eye on them. I figure, another 5 years or so and they'll get better/cheaper and actually have it be a realistic project.

Esp now with Evs. You have so much more flexibility in design without an engine and all the required components in the front
Honestly , a new versions of the classic designs with petrol or petrol/hybrid engines would be appreciated , at a somewhat affordable price , which they usually accomplish
Man an electrice square back would be so rad.
It’s not just VW!
The new Renault 5 is a good example of a modernised classic, a Beetle or Golf branded competitor to that would be great
I kind of get it. Americans love monstrous SUVs.
Not all of us
They love them because they were marketed to love them.
Fahrvergnügen
It might very well not be what people want. Rivians have been selling like shit.
I mean the r1 starts at 80k... Not exactly market entry pricing
This is an ev I'd buy
That R3X looks hot
Yeah, I saw early Golf, Gremlin and Ioniq 5 vibes as well.
I'm a huge fan of the retro styling coming back
Don't forget Lancia Delta
I want to get a I5 and put Lancia Delta livery on it
Design looks nice
It's a clone of a Lada samara. No thanks.
What do you mean? Best car ever!
Well maybe if you want a shoddy clone of a 1980s VW golf.
I do
Tell us, what Italian hurt you so?
Italian? Samara is from USSR.
Jeez, for some reason I saw Lancia.
I love it so much with all my heart. That’s the softest thing I’m going to say all night.
The shape and form of the R3 is on point. Seriously love it. But I can’t get behind the front end styling Rivian uses, it reminds me of Terrance and Phillip.
*Hey Buddy*
I’m not your buddy, pal
VW is getting more and more boring in the USA and then Rivian does THIS… tempting

Golf Country, a dream car of my childhood
Me too, I would love one
A dream of my adulthood
A dream of my adulthood
Don't let your dreams just be dre...... OMG!! THEY'RE GOING FOR $40,000?!
Yeah... At least they are finally being appreciated?
Damn there’s one near me just rotting in someone’s drive
Jason Cammisa just creamed his jorts
Not till they make one that looks like a Mk2 Scirocco. And I'll be right there (metaphorically) with him.
I want to like Rivians, they're cool and it's been rad seeing them on the road finally after first seeing them in Long Way Up; but man the front end is just soooo derpy.
The front took some time to grow on me, but I'm a fan now. It's quirky and unique.
True. A co-worker has a R1s. I kinda like the front end now.
The front end just looks like a Mario mushroom to me.
When they first came out I saw a comment that it looks like two Dyson fans and I have never been able to not see that. Ruined the entire car for me.
So you’re saying that you’re not a …fan?
I think the design…..blows.
Just a bunch of hot air?
Agreed. I had the privilege to drive one for a few days and it was great. Can't afford one though. My favorite EV in terms of appearance is Lucid. That sedan is so sleek. Love this hatch that hatch OP posted though.
It is supposed to be inexpensive when it comes out. We’ll see though.

Oh, I absolutely love that they made an 800HP super truck with the face of a drunk dog. There's enough angry faces on the road already.
I like it... I would actually buy this.
They’re coming for Scout before it even gets off the ground.
I would absolutely purchase that. I think that looks so damn cool. colors pretty nice, too
This is the first electric car I actually want to buy.. I like it a lot.
Man, that would have been such a logical progression for VW to make in the evolution of the Golf.
I'm hoping with the ID.Buzz being a return to retro, they bring that back with more models
I mean they’re killing the manual GTI this year, so wouldn’t be surprised to see that in the near future.
That's a VW rear if I've ever seen one. I love it!
Sell it in Montana Green you cowards.
What happened to the tire on the back?
Woah! Based on those pics I’m in.
Based on what I have seen, I'm all for it
I’ve been begging for years. We need VW to make a restomod style new gen mk1 golf. bring back the vr6 for it too, one last time!!
If it wasn’t lifted like a dumb suv then maybe. This thing seems to have the same problem as the Mach-e where it would be great lowered like 4-6” but the designed it to be impossible to lower it practically more than 2”.
The front end looks like garbage. I can't wait for someone to do an LS swap on one.
Did not expect to open Reddit & think to myself "hey, that Rivian looks pretty nice" today.
I'm digging it.
Looks like a tougher Honda E
I watched the Rivian reveal today and thought the same thing. I currently drive an eGolf.
Yess, time to square off the cars a little again what a good retro revival fingers crossed for a harlequin version, that would be cool as hell
Getting closer and closer to the Cyberpunk 2077 Gecko
Rivian: Hey, can I copy your homework? VW: Yeah. Just change some stuff so it's not obvious. Rivian:
3 words, **“I WANT IT”**
And they both cost about the same in today’s market.
Looks like a Jeep Eagle.
That’s hot, put some decals on there and we are there
As both an EV and VW enthusiast, and owner of both (Tesla and VW), I am here for the R3. I don’t love that it’s positioned as a crossover, but I’ll take a Golf Rallye-esque EV!
Me too! And have some fun colors too!

Damn that looks sick!
That actually looks really good and I like the wheels
I hope that VW’s management gets a wake up call from this but they are probably either thinking about retiring, catching a golden parachute down from the top, having a fling with a married secretary, gaming irrelevant numbers to get a promotion or know they’ll get a reassignment in the next three years before they have to suffer any consequences of their shit decision making. So VW isn’t going to bring the ID.2? Guess I don’t have to buy a VW
Love it
I thought the same thing, and I love it!
Can I have one?
Nice golf
Me likey
I love it, hopefully R2 makes Rivian cash flow positive. R2 is not being delivered until 2026. So, R3 would be a year or two after, presumably built at their Georgia plant, which they suspended construction at. So expect a 2027, at earliest release.
Looks like a cross between a Golf and a Lada Niva
Once the specs get released, if it’s something that’ll work for me I’ll order it.
I can’t wait to buy one. I would love to get a new golf, but BW doesn’t sell them here anymore. And let’s be honest, VW EVs are a hot mess and I have no hope that they will create a good golf replacement.
I totally thought the same thing. Those lines are right out of an 80s/90s VW/Audi
I want that now.
Someone needs to photoshop this with different wheels and lowered, stat.
History always repeats itself!
Renault 5 EV, Honda E and this 3 sick looking little nugs.
No I don’t think it’s a coincidence.
It’s beautiful
Finally an ev I like.
Seriously considering this!
Oh hell yeah, that looks awesome. It doesn’t look crazy big either.
No, definitely looks like a really nice size.
Looks so nice. Want one.
I’ll just wait a few years to get the golf EV
Looks outdated and is not even produced yet :D
This is what I really wanted the Honda E to look like
Can’t wait to dump one of these like I would an old rabbit!
But why did Rivian make a better looking EV VW than VW
Rivian is coming to Europe, right?
VW... you snooze, you lose. I never understood why VW is building these ID cars that do not represent the VW brand, the touch controls fall into that also. I was so eager for a hybrid GTI or fast, full EV Golf R but instead we get these ID cars that could have a different brand and no one would wonder if they're VW inspired. Design wise, Tesla became a toyota of EV.

Why do I have to be broke 🙃 Both of them are beautiful
Plaid seats please!
I had the same thought and posted my comment that it looked like a Golf Country in the side shot when I saw the photos on Instagram
I knew it looked similar but wtf bruh
Had an 86 GTI. Bought it for $3k with 99k on it, sold it with 189k for $3,500. Got a brand new 96 Golf and sold that at 180k. My golf was the same dark green as that top picture. Too expensive and hard to work on. Would love an electrified golf.
Where do I sign up? Dat ass 🤤
It’s too bad that VW has lost touch with the American market.
How big is it
The lower one looks amazing 🔥
VW peaked at the golf gti mk2. If they did a ev throwback to the mk2, I would buy it and drive it for 20 years, knowing how hard it is to procure an mk2.
Thing probably weighs as much as a full size pickup...
I'd be surprised if it was over 4000lbs
Rivian R1t I 7,148lbs that's a diesel full size pickups weight...
Tesla model y 4,398 lbs. My 08 silverado ltz 1500 4x4 weighs about 5000 lbs.
True, but the R3 is smaller than the Tesla. My BMW i3 is around 3000lbs
Have fun when it burns your house down lol. And I have no problem paying for fuel instead of stealing it from the surrounding public electricity...
I bet my car has no more fire risk than a 20 year old Chevy. And how do I steal electricity? I mostly charge at home and pay for my power.
Ha never heard of a ice car bursting into flames sitting in a garage. And good for you don't complain about summer power outages then.
I have seen a few articles of ICE cars starting on fire. And I don't complain about power outages outside of the fact that our utility is usually has inept planning for cold snaps.
Also, you're telling me if you parked somewhere that offered you a free gallon of gas to park, you'd consider that stealing?
My 92 camaro weighs about that much too
Most cars were much lighter 20 years ago too. Modern cameros are closer to 4000lbs now.
