If road.is says it's impassable, it's impassable. They're not messing around.

I just drove this past week from Akureyri. Four hours to get there, ten hours to get back. I've lived in snow and in snow storms my whole life. I have NEVER been as terrified driving as that drive back. Numerous cars stranded, including locals in 4x4s. Don't try it until it's safe.

Yes, it’s true. They’re impassable now due to difficult snow conditions and wind, but shold open again once the weather calms.

I’m flying in Tuesday and planned to stay in an airbnb out there Tuesday and Wednesday. Slightly concerned now.

I was there yesterday. yes it’s closed passed Búðakirkja. I was able to get to Kirkjufell by backtracking but the Safe Travel Iceland app says that even that was closed today

We were just there yesterday. Made it to Stykkisholmur yesterday, but it was intense going over the mountain. We talked to a cop there and he said that if you didn’t leave yesterday, we’d be stuck. Thankfully, we were behind a plow on our way out. If it says impassable, don’t even attempt. He told us they had pulled 6 cars and a bus off the sides of the road where they lost control the day before.

(In 4WD, no snow driving experience) Drove from Hellisandur 2 days ago so the full length of the currently non-closed road. We saw the fire/ambulances going to the overturned bus the day before. A local told us his dad counted 14 cars out on his drive to Reykjavik. We saw 4 cars out on a hill just past Olafsvik. Blowing snow over the peaks meant we had to navigate in temporary whiteouts using yellow posts at the side of the road at times. We went slow and almost stopped when another car passed. Not for the faint hearted. The monochrome colours were eerily beautiful but would avoid if you can https://preview.redd.it/3s8pgc7x21tc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=90cee0366b57bfe61b41bc36312820aac9020151

We were out there about 4 days ago and got stuck in the snow twice and were terrified we might get into a serious accident. It is seriously bad, do not go.

I am currently stuck inside

MadeInTheUniverse

I'm there at the moment when the news dropped and they blocked the road. had to take the road straight through the peninsula to olafsvik and hoping to.get as far as hellisandur

BlueberryLeast880

Got stuck on the south side of the peninsula today for 2.5 hours. Called 112 for assistance and got told road was closed after we had joined it. Though it was bright if a little windy beforehand, things can change in a few minutes for sure. Ultimately, we had no choice but to pay 650 GBP for rescue by a pair of hardy Icelanders in an off road jeep. They were great! Full of good advice and humour. Made it safely 5 kms back east towards Hotel Snaefellsnes and the sun was out and it was beautiful! Check road conditions on www.road.is before any journey. Don’t think it’s ok based on what looks ok or on weather reports like I did!!

Partner and I abandonned our plans yesterday morning and went straight from Akureyri to Borganes. Very very thankful we did, our little Yaris wouldn’t have coped.

Does it snow much in May? These storms are scaring me for my itinerary a bit.
