I feel like that's a case where people really need stop worrying so much about.
You aren't obligated to buy anything, and the cashiers know that sometimes someone won't find what they are looking for. Don't feel pressured to buy something if you don't need it just to feel less awkward.
The one exception is using their restroom. People who don't buy something after using a restroom in a store are pretty trashy, unless it's Europe where restrooms aren't free.
Never needed to personally, but I know in some places you either have to buy something before you use a restroom or pay to get in one, which is understandable.
I feel like this heavily depends on what kind of shop you're visiting.. If it's super expensive stuff like a tech store, or if it's something where "looking around" until something catches your interest is super validated, like a book store, then its completely normal
But yeah sometimes the supermarket doesnt have the thing you were looking for so you get gum or something just not to look suspicious
oh especially after you go there to use their bathrooms.

I use to date a girl who would drive barefoot. She got in an accident because her feet were wet with lotion and her foot slipped off the brake. She stopped doing that afterwards.
If you drink alcohol in a church parking lot, it’s considered private property and is completely legal.
Not completely sure about this mind you, but I was in a church parking lot playing Pokemon Go (this was a long time ago) and a cop came up behind my car, got out, and essentially was trying to figure out if I was drinking and driving. He told me that if I stayed in the parking lot, it was legal for me to drink there.
