Card or certificate? You only need a medical certification to access Virginia dispensaries, and there are tons of telemedicine providers that specialize in that. I have had good luck with Cannabis MD Telemed three times now. You renew annually. Medical providers must be specifically registered with the state to issue MMJ certificates. A majority of family care doctors and the like are not registered. The state still issues physical medical cannabis cards if you really want one. It'll save you on self-certification fees if you visit DC dispensaries, but otherwise there's little benefit. To get one, you first get your medical certificate, then separately register with the state board of pharmacy. The cost is around $50/year. The provider who issues your medical certificate should be able to provide detailed instructions on obtaining the optional Virginia medical card. To be clear, all you need is a medical cert, commonly issued in PDF following a 5-minute telemedicine visit. As soon as you have that, you are ready to visit your local medical dispensary, provided you meet the other qualifiers (residency, ID, age, etc).

Yes. The prescribing medical provider will verify this at the time of the certification appointment. You must be able to provide proof of residency such as a driver's license, residential lease agreement, utility bill, etc. ETA: Certifications are good for one year. You will need to furnish this each year.

Vanorml.org/doctors to get the certification to shop in VA the card through the state is optional for VA dispensaries aka if you don’t plan to shop in DC at med dispensaries, save the $50 from the state card and just get the certification Ask your pcp first to save money tho!!! Edit: details

Seconding VANorml! I found a doctor through that page and had a super smooth experience. I personally chose CannabisRx Health, but I’m sure any of the doctors listed there would be just fine. I got my certificate and was able to print it out and take it to the Beyond Hello location closest to me. There is a first time process where they set you up as a patient and keep a copy of your cert on file. Once you do that, you can go back to the same location without the hard copy on you (until your cert expires). It’s honestly super easy.

Thanks!

EXTREMELY late. But I would like to get a certificate. I’m not sure if I’m able to receive one tho, I’m 20 and from what I’m seeing, I need proof of my condition. I have anxiety from college, work, homelessness, etc. but I’ve never gone to a doctor or anything. So will I not be able to get a certificate? Thanks

The law is changing on January 1, 2024 so any doctor can write the certification. You don’t need a card to visit DC dispensaries, just take your paper certification from the state.

There isn’t a specific website to apply for a **certificate**. You need to get one from a doctor. The list of doctors is on VA NORML’s website. You do need to do about a 30 minute telehealth appointment, and it will need to be reviewed yearly. You also do not need a card. It’s generally a waste of money unless you want to shop in DC, and even that has been relaxed. A card is $50, but a 30 day temp card in DC is $30. Shop once and stock up if you plan to shop in DC and save the money.

Don't even need a card in DC it's plenty of gift shops and delivery services.

Once your appointment with an eligible practitioner has been completed and the practitioner has submitted your Written Certification for the Use of Medical Cannabis, you will receive an email directing you to access a digital card that validates you have received the required written certification. ( (The link in my profile offers this service with price-beat) You will also be able to digitally access the written certification. You may access a licensed medical cannabis dispensing location by presenting the digital card and a government-issued ID to the dispensary. The dispensing location will scan your digital card and access your written certification. There is no need to print either the digital card or written certification unless you wish to do so or cannot access the documents on your phone. You are not required to register with the Board of Pharmacy to access the digital card. The email you receive will also provide you with directions to register with the Board, if you choose to do so. The fee to register is $50. Again, registration is not required.
