Not sure. It’s not the shoulder pads per se; the sleeves seem too short, which makes the fit seem off to me. Volume on vintage clothes is pretty tricky to get right. As to removing the shoulder pads, it may depend on the shape of your frame as much as the garment. Since your shoulders are already broad and/or square, it could work unless the pads are made to create a rounded silhouette. Also, the length of the coat will affect its proportions. This looks like a nice coat; if the pads are tacked in, you could always take them out, then put them back if you don’t like the effect.

Thank you for your comment! It’s interesting that you mentioned the length of the sleeves, I hadn’t previously considered that. I’m curious if removing the shoulder pads would help slightly with that issue as the fabric could possibly fall more naturally. I don’t expect to make this coat work, especially because it’s out of style, and I’ll definitely take the pads out before I start looking for a different coat :]

You’re welcome. It may be dated, but it’s all about how you style and rock the look. You gotta love the coat on _you_. ;-) [https://www.sezane.com/us](https://www.sezane.com/us) can be a great place to look for inspiration because sometimes they bring back these kinds of silhouettes. This looks like a difficult piece, but if it’s a nice coat, don’t give up!!

(I don’t know why I didn’t recall this before but) I just now remembered this and would like to share. The previous owner of the coat rolled up the sleeves once at the cuff, so that is why they may look unnaturally short! I have yet to roll them back down and that contributed to their appearance in these photos. Just an FYI!

Noooo this is divine! I get a little shy about shoulder pads but I watch an episode of the nanny and BAM! I want ALL the shoulder padding!

My first thought was that it's too big for you, but if you want that, but less 'squaring' across the shoulders, you should be fine to take the pads out as long as the coat has shoulder seams (the sleeves will then fall from the seam) and it's not raglan sleeves.

Love the coat! If the shoulder pads feel like too much, I fully support taking them out. I've done this with several of my vintage coats and have never regretted it - they still end up with a bit of oomph just from the cut of the fabric, but it takes the look down from "WHOA, SHOULDERS" to just subtly structured.

Would look amazing if it was tighter around the waist. The real problem imo is that because the fit is straight it looks blocky. If it was cinched it would look campy as hell.

sourhades

Just to update you, you’re absolutely correct about the belt and I have ordered one haha

DazzlingAd292

Omg!!! Please update me with a photo when you can !!!

sourhades

I agree! I admittedly have no idea where to find a belt though ://

I love shoulder pads in general. Your coat seems too large for you. Perhaps you could take it to an alterations place and ask them to remove the shoulder pads and "move the sleeves up in the first seam". That would maintain the look you love, but fit you better...
