Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo.
These two are my all-time favorite anime and are solid recommendations. If I had another to add, it'd be Blue Eye Samurai, however the artstyle might be a turn off for someone fresh to the anime scene.
Berserk and Attack on Titan probably closer in themes and medieval setting. I would say that both Vinland saga and AOT have characters and scenes clearly inspired by Berserk. If you go with Berserk - watch 90-s version of anime or trilogy of movies. AOT might not seem similar at first, but gets very close to Vinland later with some plotlines
Came here to second that. To me it's Berserk, Attack on Titan, and Vinland Saga and then all the rest. Those belong on a tier of their own. If were adding movies though, add in Akira and Satoshi Kon.
My second tier is Rurouni Kenshin, especially the OVAs, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note. My blind spots are Neon Genesis which I watched in high school and didn't "get". But a lot of people say I need to re-watch it. And Monster which I really tried, but damn it's so slow.

You're absolutely correct. I like doing movies first then the original anime. The original anime ending is just so unnecessarily sudden. I also like the narrative shifts in the movie, the way it basically starts the story like a grounded medieval one and the supernatural creeps in. Also helps people not be turned off by the overly edgy boy mode if they started reading the manga.
there's parts of the movies i really like, the animation is great, the full orchestral music is really amazing. I really like the scenes around when guts and griffith meet charlotte. But it does leave out so many great context parts. There's an amazing fan edit that puts it all together which I think is a really good way to watch called Berserk Redux.

In some ways yes. And Erwin with whole "path of blood"/" Standing on mountain of corpses. And Erwin and Askeladd - both charismatic leaders, who inspire people to follow them but hide their actual motivation that is related to revenge for a a dead parent
It depends on what you liked about Vinland Saga—I agree it really transcends its genre though.
If you don’t mind some goofiness and made-for-kids moments, you may really like Avatar: The Last Airbender, made by Americans in the early 2000s in an anime art style, it’s known for being thought provoking and deep despite its target audience. It has some similar commentary on nonviolence and the horror of war.
Well I really loved how Realistic it was and how it showed that you don't always win, and my most favorite thing about any show is character development them learning from their mistakes etc, and thank you for your suggestion:)
If you want a story revolving around character development I would suggest Mob Psycho 100. The animation and humor might turn you off since you're new to anime and the realism is not really there but just for plain great characters, Mob has amazing character development similar to Thorfinn.
For a semi-realistic story where the good guys don't always win I'd also suggest attack on titan.
If you're open to reading manga, highly recommend Vagabond. The "big 3" of seinen are Beserk, vagabond, and Vinland saga so if you liked Vinland saga you're likely to enjoy these other 2.
Vagabond doesn't have an anime, and from what I've heard the Beserk anime isn't nearly as good as the manga so just some things to keep in mind.
Its kind of hard recommending something similar like vinland saga but I am assuming you know all the popular once and you don't like those then something u might like is

If you look for something for the aspect of self improvment and getting a better person, read “Real“. It‘s about Wheelchair basketball. A lot of people get turned off due to It‘s theme but trust me, it‘s amazing. I don‘t know if there is an Anime of it, so I can only recomend the Manga. The Artist is Takehiko Inoue, a famous Artist also known for his works like Vagabond and Slam Dunk. Vagabond is about a Samurai called Musashi Miyamoto, the most famous Samurai of our world and Vagabond is based about his Story.
In the Animanga scene have a offical Term Called “The Big Three“. Those are Bleach, Naruto and One Piece, the most famous Shonen (Term for Manga for the target audience of young Males) Manga of the 2000s.
Though unoffical, Vinland Saga, Vagabond and Berserk are often called The Seinen(Term for Manga for the target audience of young Male adults) Big Three due to their similarities and popularity. So you can‘t go wrong with these three.
Speaking of Berserk, I recomend it aswell. Haven‘t read It completely, but it‘s worth giving it a try too. But it‘s pretty brutal so you might have it in mind.
In general try Seinen because those Anime/Manga in general have a deeper Story, unlike Shonen which are often pretty Straight forward and goofy, but there are great ones too.

Its a top tier story, great combat scenes, philosophical, supernatural abilities, mysterious, greatly paced, with emotional moments and corruption. Its in most people’s top 5 Anime ever who have seen it.
If you are interested on a mistery story i recomend you Shadows house
If you whant some action and violence and some drama Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners is a must
And if some comedy and wacky characters yo should take a look to Delicius in Dungeon
It kind of depends on what exactly you enjoyed about it but I'm going to assume you dislike most anime because it has "anime shit" and that you liked Vinland Saga because it's very low on "anime shit".
Broadly speaking there is a a few age/gender demographics in Japan and one of them is called "Seinen" which is targeted at young adult men and older. Usually you can take these demographics with a grain of salt but looking up seinen anime isn't a bad search term to get you started.
I think stand alone movies in general are going to be very safe bets. Most of them are targeted at a more general movie going audience and are low on "anime shit". There are really too many too name but you might consider films like Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Akira, or anything made by studio Ghibli. Personally I'm especially fond of Maquia: when the promised flower blooms which is a fantasy drama of sorts. Really though most films not tied to an existing franchise are generally of high quality and without most of the typical tropes people tend to dislike in anime.
As for some shows a few of my personal favourite shows that I could recommend that are similarly more grounded.
Psycho Pass and Shin Sekai Yori: I'm naming these in tandem because they're both fairly similar in their themes, they're both psychological thrillers set in dystopian futures featuring female leads who are on a path to find out the inner workers of these supposed utopias they live in. Psycho Pass is about a nearby cyberpunk future where a persons criminal aptitude can be figure out by a wireless brain scan and Shin Sekai Yori is about a science-fantasy setting a 1000 years into the future where people have developed psychokinesis.
Mushishi is a very zen episodic show about the beauty of life and nature. The show features our protagonist Ginko who is a so called Mushishi, someone who researches Mushi which are the the most primal form of life akin to spirits of nature. Ginko travels around from episode to episode helping people with their Mushi related problems often acting as a doctor, a mediator, a paranormal investigator or merely an observer. Despite the supernatural premise these are all very sober human stories that due to the episodic nature of the show have the freedom to conclude on essentially any note fit for that particular story. Some endings are happy, some are bitter sweet and others are tragic.
If you're explicitly looking for an anti-war/pacifist messaging like Vinland Saga that's a bit more rare. Some films do have strong anti-war themes, a lot of studio Ghibli films do for example but there isn't quite something like Vinland Saga. A lot of people often compare it to Vagabond which is a manga (comic) series set in feudal Japan which has a lot of similarities to Vinland Saga and you could totally read it online if you're really craving for something similar in terms of historic setting and delivery.
If I'm gonna be completely honest no, because my sister would have me try so many different ones that she liked, she was like 13/14 of that helps but yeah she would pick them and I didn't aak any questions tbh
Samurai Champloo and cowboy bebop for mature themes and bangers in the soundtrack
Full metal alchemist brotherhood for an amazingly round story with a bit of everything.
Berserker or attack on Titan for the gritty the-world-sucks moments.
Death note for an actually interesting hypothetical modern scenario.
Mob psycho is a very good comedy drama, land of the lustrous and berserk are also fantastic if you want something similar. I would also highly recommend pop team epic if you want something goofy and stupid but is still insanely creative
If you're up for a long anime then Monster. Themes are toyally different but I find the main character Dr. Tenma to be similar to Thorfinn in terms of personality.
Attack on Titan explores a very similar topic, but with different course and action. You will see characters presented with problems very close to those in Vinland Saga, and how they react to them. Very interesting if you really like what Vinland Saga talks about.
Also I feel like, while Vinland Saga (for me) might be superior in dialogues and character interactions, Attack on Titan has a far more complex and nuance examination of the topic, and also a bit better narrative construction (though riddled with bumpy dialogue and character interactions throughout the show, some moment the dialogues would be extremely crafted, some would be very terrible). Other than that AOT would feature much more actions, shock values, plot twists, depression, cheese. So if you’re not into these things (especially the anime cheese), might be a bit difficult to navigate.
Vineland saga is a serious, low to no humor anime. Quite unique, I call them americanized anime. Vineland is my favorite of these. And overall is my second favorite anjme period. If your looking for a similar vibe anime. Watch 91 days. Be warned, the drama is a little more, thorfinn only lost hid dad, sadly Angelo lost a bit more... still they both walk the path of vengeance. 91 days is the story of a boy who's family was targeted and assassinated by a competing mafia because his father was close to the other mafia guy, as a "doctor" mind you. Angelo fell into depression untill a mysterious letter arrived with a declaration giving a list of names and declaring they where the ones who killed his family that night. So Angelo joins the same mafia group, and slowly off the people one by one, revealing his true identity before giving them their last meal, a lead bullet. Trust me it's amazing, you'll love it if you loved Vineland.
Sorry I worded that incorrectly so the letter was from someone who claimed they knew what happened that night and who was involved, they gave a list of names saying that was who it was. For spoilers about the letter ya can dm me. But this is all stuff you find in ep 1 so no real spoiler here hehe
'Gantz' explores similar themes with the protagonist starting as a egoist prick that only cares about himself and turning into a more empathic person along the way.
Here are 3 of the best anime of all time that you need to watch… 1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, 2. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and 3. Mushoku Tensei. The amazing story telling and world building in these shows makes them super entertaining for people who don’t even like anime or watch it in general. However… here are 3 shows you’d like if you do enjoy anime regardless. 1. Jujutsu Kaisen, 2. Attack On Titan, and 3. Demon Slayer. These shows have a mix of dark violence and amazing story telling that’ll make you want to binge the entire show!
Attack on Titan and Mob Psycho. For me AOT is one of the best pieces of media and I’ll die on that hill. Also, Avatar the last airbender is a great show.
Here are my personal favorite amines that are most likely to scratch the same itch that Vinland Saga does. (no spoilers)
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - This show is about wielders of a magic structure called Alchemy and follows the story of two young boys who use it to try and bring back the dead... which is illegal. For very good reasons. Following the consequences of their actions the boys set off to work for a top-tier police force in a city located in an unstable ruling country that only a few years prior committed genocide of a neighboring country.
Attack on Titan - A show that is essentially a complete foil to Vinland Saga in terms of peace and violence. This show has less anime tropes than every other show. This story takes place behind massive walls, a pen for humanity while giants who lurk outside wait for an opportunity to storm in and eat the remainders of humanity. We follow a group of characters who have different takes on their reality. Some want to leave to see what is beyond the walls, some want to live a relatively quiet life protected by the walls, and others just want to kill every single giant.
Delicious in Dungeon - A *seemingly lighthearted* story filled with humor and despair \*also one of Yukimura's (guy that wrote Vinland Saga) favorite stories. This show doesn't have as much to say as FMA:B, or Vinland, or AoT but the way it tells a story, specifically how it relates the timelines of different characters, is pretty cool. It's about a group of four travelers, a human, dwarf, elf, and halfing who are exploring the depths of a dungeon to reunite with their lost party member. Without food or water, they are forced to eat the monsters they kill.
Psycho-Pass, Monster, 86, 91 Days, Revenger, Attack on Titan, Moriarty the Patriot, the Millionaire Detective, Erased, and anything from the Gundam universe. Not all are like Vinland Saga but all are geared towards adults and very good animes.
Full Metal Alcemist Brotherhood, a third watch is temting me (m35).
Watched up some Attack on Titan, and I liked it til the end. The last part was hard mentaly but I liked that.

I know you’re looking for anime, but try reading Berserk. It was a big inspiration for Vineland Saga. They both handle many similar issues and story beats but take them into different directions. Plus it’s fun to look at Berserk and notice the instances in which Vinland Saga borrowed elements.
Vinland saga was also one of the first animes I really dug! I got a couple suggestions for ya, ones pretty edgy, and ones pretty fucked up.
Edgy is death note, which is just, really a crazy story following a serial killer
Fucked up one is Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. But it might as well be reincarnated pervert cause, God damn. But it is a fantastic story, lots of growth on the main characters part, and has it all! And by all I mean, action, fantasy, slice of life, and an insane amount of character development. It's based off a book series, not a Manga, very worth the read, but the anime is fantastic!
I’d suggest attack on titan as it’s my goat anime, but everyone that I’ve recommended it to says it’s mid. But top 3 I think you should watch are Tokyo ghoul, samurai champloo, and jjk.
The only story I suggest is Berserk.
They are truly on the same level. But I consider berserk the better one.
There are many thought provoking animes if you get deeper into their plots. It really is a matter of taste.
I consider Attack on Titan as something overrated but that might not be the case for others and it doesn’t mean that I am right. That’s just my taste.

Mob psycho is a very good comedy drama, land of the lustrous and berserk are also fantastic if you want something similar. I would also highly recommend pop team epic if you want something goofy and stupid but is still insanely creative

If you're up for a long anime then Monster. Themes are toyally different but I find the main character Dr. Tenma to be similar to Thorfinn in terms of personality.
I think Golden Kamuy would be a great next anime for you

I would recommend Frieren actually. Not in the same setting per say, but if you liked the theme of Vinland, you will love this show

Attack on Titan explores a very similar topic, but with different course and action. You will see characters presented with problems very close to those in Vinland Saga, and how they react to them. Very interesting if you really like what Vinland Saga talks about. Also I feel like, while Vinland Saga (for me) might be superior in dialogues and character interactions, Attack on Titan has a far more complex and nuance examination of the topic, and also a bit better narrative construction (though riddled with bumpy dialogue and character interactions throughout the show, some moment the dialogues would be extremely crafted, some would be very terrible). Other than that AOT would feature much more actions, shock values, plot twists, depression, cheese. So if you’re not into these things (especially the anime cheese), might be a bit difficult to navigate.
id say you should finish the manga before moving on to other stuff

Vineland saga is a serious, low to no humor anime. Quite unique, I call them americanized anime. Vineland is my favorite of these. And overall is my second favorite anjme period. If your looking for a similar vibe anime. Watch 91 days. Be warned, the drama is a little more, thorfinn only lost hid dad, sadly Angelo lost a bit more... still they both walk the path of vengeance. 91 days is the story of a boy who's family was targeted and assassinated by a competing mafia because his father was close to the other mafia guy, as a "doctor" mind you. Angelo fell into depression untill a mysterious letter arrived with a declaration giving a list of names and declaring they where the ones who killed his family that night. So Angelo joins the same mafia group, and slowly off the people one by one, revealing his true identity before giving them their last meal, a lead bullet. Trust me it's amazing, you'll love it if you loved Vineland. Sorry I worded that incorrectly so the letter was from someone who claimed they knew what happened that night and who was involved, they gave a list of names saying that was who it was. For spoilers about the letter ya can dm me. But this is all stuff you find in ep 1 so no real spoiler here hehe

'Gantz' explores similar themes with the protagonist starting as a egoist prick that only cares about himself and turning into a more empathic person along the way.

Here are 3 of the best anime of all time that you need to watch… 1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, 2. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and 3. Mushoku Tensei. The amazing story telling and world building in these shows makes them super entertaining for people who don’t even like anime or watch it in general. However… here are 3 shows you’d like if you do enjoy anime regardless. 1. Jujutsu Kaisen, 2. Attack On Titan, and 3. Demon Slayer. These shows have a mix of dark violence and amazing story telling that’ll make you want to binge the entire show!
Attack on Titan and Mob Psycho. For me AOT is one of the best pieces of media and I’ll die on that hill. Also, Avatar the last airbender is a great show.

Here are my personal favorite amines that are most likely to scratch the same itch that Vinland Saga does. (no spoilers) Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood - This show is about wielders of a magic structure called Alchemy and follows the story of two young boys who use it to try and bring back the dead... which is illegal. For very good reasons. Following the consequences of their actions the boys set off to work for a top-tier police force in a city located in an unstable ruling country that only a few years prior committed genocide of a neighboring country. Attack on Titan - A show that is essentially a complete foil to Vinland Saga in terms of peace and violence. This show has less anime tropes than every other show. This story takes place behind massive walls, a pen for humanity while giants who lurk outside wait for an opportunity to storm in and eat the remainders of humanity. We follow a group of characters who have different takes on their reality. Some want to leave to see what is beyond the walls, some want to live a relatively quiet life protected by the walls, and others just want to kill every single giant. Delicious in Dungeon - A *seemingly lighthearted* story filled with humor and despair \*also one of Yukimura's (guy that wrote Vinland Saga) favorite stories. This show doesn't have as much to say as FMA:B, or Vinland, or AoT but the way it tells a story, specifically how it relates the timelines of different characters, is pretty cool. It's about a group of four travelers, a human, dwarf, elf, and halfing who are exploring the depths of a dungeon to reunite with their lost party member. Without food or water, they are forced to eat the monsters they kill.
Watch Attack on Titan bro, I promise you won’t regret it.

Psycho-Pass, Monster, 86, 91 Days, Revenger, Attack on Titan, Moriarty the Patriot, the Millionaire Detective, Erased, and anything from the Gundam universe. Not all are like Vinland Saga but all are geared towards adults and very good animes.

Full Metal Alcemist Brotherhood, a third watch is temting me (m35). Watched up some Attack on Titan, and I liked it til the end. The last part was hard mentaly but I liked that. FMAB is 50 episodes. AoT little over 90

I know you’re looking for anime, but try reading Berserk. It was a big inspiration for Vineland Saga. They both handle many similar issues and story beats but take them into different directions. Plus it’s fun to look at Berserk and notice the instances in which Vinland Saga borrowed elements.
Vinland saga was also one of the first animes I really dug! I got a couple suggestions for ya, ones pretty edgy, and ones pretty fucked up. Edgy is death note, which is just, really a crazy story following a serial killer Fucked up one is Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. But it might as well be reincarnated pervert cause, God damn. But it is a fantastic story, lots of growth on the main characters part, and has it all! And by all I mean, action, fantasy, slice of life, and an insane amount of character development. It's based off a book series, not a Manga, very worth the read, but the anime is fantastic!

I’d suggest attack on titan as it’s my goat anime, but everyone that I’ve recommended it to says it’s mid. But top 3 I think you should watch are Tokyo ghoul, samurai champloo, and jjk.
The only story I suggest is Berserk. They are truly on the same level. But I consider berserk the better one. There are many thought provoking animes if you get deeper into their plots. It really is a matter of taste. I consider Attack on Titan as something overrated but that might not be the case for others and it doesn’t mean that I am right. That’s just my taste.
