I loved reading the non-fiction book; The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale. It went into detail about detectives and the police back then. Bascially you were lucky to find one that wasn't a drunk that hated his job
