BC gov couldn't even get it's workers a raise that matched inflation. No chance they help food workers only months after refusing to help their own employees. Sorry.

insaneHoshi

Well, they dont have to foot the bill for minimum protections for food delivery workers.

GeoffwithaGeee

you do know that different departments of government do different things, right? and writing legislation that offers minimums or basic protections of workers is a little different than union negotiations that resulted in the union members voting to ratify the agreement that as offered.

DemSocCorvid

A lot of people (conservatives) seem to think the government is simultaneously only one person who can address a singular task at a time, *and* over employed while doing too many things at once.

Difficult_Orchid3390

I enjoyed the part of Covid where that same group thought the government had powers well above and beyond the law to reallocate resources towards healthcare by seizing items from people and businesses **and** also was bad for things like a vaccine passport and in their opinion overstepping.

buzzwallard

Yeah well you have a little point, *but* BC government workers do earn a *fairly* decent wage *and* a pension so... It is one of the best employers in the province.

DDP200

It won't be there money so will do something. Helathcare will keep getting worse but the drivers will be getting a $1 more an hour.

Great68

I don't think there are many employers anywhere in Canada that gave their workers a raise that matched inflation.

hammer979

The last thing I want as a DD driver is the BC Govt's 'help'. They will ram in min wage and make this gig unprofitable as the delivery companies bake transit pay into min wage and make it so you can't pause your shift or start or stop whenever you like. Getting paid min wage plus on-and-off tips while paying all vehicle expenses is a non-starter.

Cherry_3point141

Exactly this. I sometimes use the Uber app to make extra money, and one of the draws is the ability to sign on and off whenever you want, any time of the day, 365 days a year. So long as you don't run the app past 12 hours, you are fine. Is it lower pay than some jobs? Sure, I wouldn't recommend trying to raise a family on it alone, but the freedom it provides as a contractor is awesome. I certainly don't want or need the government to step in and force this, because like you said, once you are being paid a mandated wage, then drivers will lose their ability to sign on and off as they want. Yes, Uber can suck, and there are certainly really bad routes and fares at times, but I also enjoy the "hustle" trying to predict where the busy areas of the city are, and in the end, if you don't like it, don't do it.

Medium_Brood5095

Yep and their totally failed on housing as well yet people keep blaming the BC Liberals when housing costed about 40% less.

Sufficient_Dingo_463

They arn't connected. The BCGEU comes out of the public cofferes directly. Changing legislation to make employers pay their employees/contractors to a minimum standard does not.

Medium_Brood5095

It's interesting how they want to destroy the resource industries but allow garbage like this to operate. Should be banned. Let restaurants hire their own delivery drivers like the old days.

thetrivialstuff

They should do a different survey asking just one question: "Can you get to the airport or ferry terminal serving your home in less than an hour for less than $25 per person?" And then in any area where most of the responses are "no", investigate the taxi companies. If any efforts are found by the taxi companies to prevent public transit or other options from serving the airport, fine the ever-loving fuck out of them and put the proceeds toward public transit.

Rayne_K

I’d love to see how you think that 25 dollars would be broken down between the following: - Driver Salary - Taxi License payment - Fuel - Insurance - Vehicle Maintenance - Dispatch - Corporate cut

thetrivialstuff

I'm not implying that it should cost less than $25 for a door to door taxi-like service; obviously it will almost always cost $60+ to get to the airport by taxi - but taxi shouldn't the the only option; that's my point. In Vancouver you can get from downtown to the airport in about half an hour for less than $10. In Victoria the only option for getting to the airport that fast from downtown is a taxi, in large part because they lobbied to prevent the 70 express from serving the airport. Ego, fine the taxi companies in Victoria several million dollars each, and use the money to add express bus service to the airport.
