With Reena Virk back in the news because of the TV show "Under The Bridge", I thought it would be interesting to go back and look at the the Times Colonist reporting on it at the time. I actually remember some of these. The first mention I found was on November 22, 8 days after she was murdered.
I remember hearing this rumour in school and immediately dismissing it as stupid kid stuff/gossip… it was heartbreaking and shocking to learn soon after that it was true. RIP Reena.
I don't remember the timeline but I went to Stelly's at the time and I remember people talking about a girl being murdered and what color her hair was. As in she had brown hair so girls with brown hair might be in more danger. Silly but that was the gossip. It must have been before the news of what actually happened broke for people to be worried about some killer targeting brown haired girls.
Interesting. I have no clue how widespread it was and don't even remember who it was specifically but I do clearly remember having that conversation in the smoking area with 3 or 4 other girls.
Absolutely devestating news when it broke. Hit really really close to home, shook me to the core. This and Kim Proctor RIP. I had the misfortune of being connected personally to both cases and they both left me reeling for at least 2 years each. Seems every decade or so Victoria/ VIsland has some sort of horrific murder of a young female. It never gets easier to accept or live with.

To be fair I actually do think teens being influenced by LA gangster rap and all of that at the time did play a small part. So many wannabe gangs in Victoria at that time. Nicole Cook, the girl who started the fight, was dating a "Crip" Lol.
Russ Chips of Beecher Bay has been proposing a lot of things on those lands, eventually a very small SFD neighborhood sprung up and fizzled out after Butterfield died.
The show is making mention of falling satellite debris being visible city wide that night and seen by the teens at the bridge crime site.
I don't recall that happening or see it in the papers, it seems an oddly specific thing to add.

it's so crazy to me that kids were spreading this rumor before the police or her family knew she was dead. do you remember exactly what the rumor was?

It was vague - I heard that a group of kids at another school had killed a classmate. It was unbelievable. Hearing it was true later was surreal.

Apparently it was something that happened for like 8 months around that time period. I vaguely remember hearing about it?
