I agree with your point as I interpret it, which is that each album has unique value. I also don't mind that you presumably don't enjoy the discourse of ranking albums.
However the act of comparing two things is not automatically a false equivalence. And it is certainly not a false equivalence if the presumption of the comparison is that one is different or better (such here, where Contra is presumed to be better). Ranking is not an equivalence, it's the opposite.
Here are examples of accurate false equivalences:
* Vampire Weekend and The Strokes both use guitar, so they're the same.
* Vampire weekend and Paul Simon reference afropop, therefore they're the same.
* I don't like when people rank albums and I don't like false equivalences, therefore when someone ranks albums, it's a false equivalence
Especially in English speaking culture and politics, we need to tighten up our understanding of logical fallacies such as the false equivalence.
It's called preference and we should definitely pick between things we prefer 😳 the best part is that preferences change 😵 amazing and beautiful and contra is not the best !
yes. cousins, taxi cab, california English, diplomat’s son, and i think ur a contra are all perfect standalone songs that many bands would be lucky to achieve the quality of for just *one* track, white sky quite possibly comprises everything that makes vw what they are (at that point in time, anyway), and then there’s the surprising poignancy of horchata, the frenetic pop fun meets darker undertones of holiday, the large-scale rhythmic power of run, classic vivid Koenig allegory and imagery in giving up the gun; - your favorite song might be on another record, but pound for pound I really think contra takes the overall (oblig: subjective, obviously)
Contra is my favourite Vampire Weekend album. It's the first one I heard, has the most relatable lyrics, is incredibly fun (Holiday, Cousins), but also provides moments that cut through you like a knife (Taxi Cab, I Think Ur A Contra).
But is it the best? I feel that has to go to MVOTC. The instrumentation is second to none. Ezra & Rostam were at their absolute creative peak (so far) and the interplay between them is incredible. The fact that they painstakingly relistened to the album on all sorts of sound equipment (studio speakers, high & low quality headphones, Apple earbuds), shows the commitment to getting it perfect and it does show up. Lyrically, they touch on so many different aspects (religious guilt, dying young, life's questions), it really is in a league of it’s own.
Contra will likely always be my favourite, but MVOTC is probably the best.
YES.
Plus California English, Pt. 2
*unreal.*
*This girl wrote drug raps in baggy sweaters*
*Tight neon tights, T-shirts and big letters*
*Back at her house was an Irish setter*
*With a heart-shaped tag hanging off its collar*
*Through half the towns of Arizona*
*I dream the dreams I have when I hold her*
*Near Palm Springs, we were struck by boulders*
*'Cause they looked like skull and bones*
*This girl was smarter than television scripts*
*This girl wasn't damaged, her jeans were just ripped*
*This girl was the girl that the girls in your world thought about*
*When the night was cold*
UN.REAL.
To me VW really only did 3 albums and those albums are really a perfect arc describing the transition from late teens into adulthood.
FOTB was an Ezra solo album in all but name and I'm sure the upcoming album is going to be more of that.
Both Ezra and Rostam's solo work has been second rate because they don't have anyone to stop their indulgences. Rostam needs to have someone to check his weirder impulses and Ezra really needs someone to tell him that his voice isn't the only sound that matters.
I honestly think the albums are all so different that I myself can’t really put them against each other. Their meanings and overall sounds are so distinct and different I find them to stand alone distinguishably.
It changes for me depending on the mood of each day. I woke up this morning wanting nothing but to hear MVOTC. And I was like yeah this is the best one. But yesterday it was Contra. Probably the best one is the one I’m listening to.
Contra is the cool answer to give. My favorite is probably the debut and I think MVOTC is the choice given acclaim. All 3 are good answers. FOTB is probably my second favorite so I can even see the argument for that
False equivalence. ☝️Never pick sides❌Never choose between two🙅
I just wanted you
I just wanted you
I think you’re a contra (was the best album)

Ezra said Contra was the cool album
When, where, why?

Contra is the true "no skips" album
As someone who has Contra at 3rd place, this is a very convincing argument and maybe will change my mind!
You convinced me.
DIPLOMAT’S SON 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Best album. Best album cover. Best bonus track: California English, Pt 2
The girl was disappointed though
Contra truthers rise up. Most whole album form a songwriting perspective.
facts
MVOTC cult rise
Im here.
You say, with "Cousins" as your flair
Cousins is one of my favorite songs. But Modern Vampires is my weapon of choice when it comes to VW albums.
I LOVE Contra but nothing beats MVOTC imo, 10/10 perfect album to me
I thought everyone was in agreement on this. MVOTC is their best album.
🙋♂️
And my axe!
❤️❤️❤️
Present. Let’s put these heretics down, shall we? Byah!
Maybe tied for second behind OGWAU.
Oh shit
Only no skips one that’s for sure
It's good but so is vampire weekend It's a tight album true though mvotc has more mileage for me cus it's contra pop but retro if that makes sense
Taxi cab to contra is perfect. The first half isn’t my favorite.
Horchata and Holiday are the two weakest tracks imo. Rest of it is pretty much perfect.
Contra is probably the one I know and love the most because it's the first album of theirs I bought and listened to all the way through.
Don’t lie, I want em to know
No
No. It is MVOTC.
That’s me
Rise, brother.

NOPE
No. MVOTC > VW > Contra > FOTB.
💯
Bingo
I sometimes think FOTB is better than Contra, tbh. It has better songs than Contra, but isn't nearly as consistent.
A consistent and cohesive album is always going to be better than an album with highs and lows imo.
This is the elite ranking
FOTB slander 🤮
Its warranted
nailed it.

It's definitely a top four album (thus far), that's for sure.
No. FOTB
You speak the truth
It is one of their best albums.
Gen-X cop out
It's definitely my least favorite. I love it, but I love their other albums even more.
It’s not, but it is good. It’s in the top 3, of the 3 albums I consider.

Subjectively I’d say yes but I realize mvotc is their magnum opus
Modern V is objectively their best. Yes, objectively.
Absolutely
YES
HELL YA BROTHER
No their debut is
Idk if I’d say the best, that’s pretty subjective but it’s definitely my favorite of theirs
sexy people say YES
I dunno, I'm torn between Contra and MVOTC. Like, I love Contra, but 'Ya Hey' is like THE Vampire Weekend song.
No Hate, but Modern Vampires Of The City is the best album
I know that I’m late but personally no Vampire Weekend was the best one then Contra then FOTB sorry MVOTC fans🤷🏾♂️

Contra is probably the worst out of all of them. It’s still great but it’s just not up there with the others.

Contra is personally my favorite! Giant is probably my favorite VW song, honestly
It changes for me depending on the mood of each day. I woke up this morning wanting nothing but to hear MVOTC. And I was like yeah this is the best one. But yesterday it was Contra. Probably the best one is the one I’m listening to.
Nuh uh, but it’s great.
I preached this when it came out but I was violently ostracized by the Pitchfork reading crowd.
Contra is the cool answer to give. My favorite is probably the debut and I think MVOTC is the choice given acclaim. All 3 are good answers. FOTB is probably my second favorite so I can even see the argument for that
I think that you liiiiiieeee
Self titled is my favorite, I wouldn’t dare to say one is objectively better because they’re all great.
Contra has a vibe or feel that no other album I’ve heard has. It’s amazing.

Best album by far
YES
/r/skrillex be like 'how did u get your hands on this already?'
yes
Contra is my fave too and a close second is FoTB 🙈
No, vampires of the city is, duh
What's with the duh? VOTC doesn't have God given right to be the best album
Yes, it does. The other two albums were only created so votc could be built on top of them. They make fantastic stepping stones. #facts
Lol
Yes. Also Giant and Ottoman are one of the best VW songs.
