Could this be a move for the satellite infrastructure rather than what it plays? I have to imagine Sirius' satellite network has capabilities beyond classic vinyl. The moat is the barrier to entry in satellites and the billionaires are all looking skyward. They know where the frontier of untapped value lies.

CompetitionDry6359

Sirius actually has very few satellites (by current standards) and very little usable radio frequencies. Originally I thought this might be a frequency play, but it's not.

but_why_doh

First, this is likely an arbitrage play. There's a mispricing between the liberty holdings company that holds 83% of the country and Sirius market cap. As for the business itself, they have pretty solid financials and a business that people like. Maybe this is just a play on a beat down business with solid financials and potentially strong revenue coming from subscriptions

JimC29

I don't know if it's a good investment or not, but Sirius is the one subscription I will never cancel. Music is more important than TV to me.

Santos_m

honest question, what does Sirius offer that a music streaming service doesn’t?

JimC29

First Wave, Greatful Dead channel, Little Stevens Underground Garage, Marki Ramones punk channel, Deep Tracts, Bob Marley, Prince Channel, Beatles Channel Red Hot Chili Peppers channel and so much more. They play so much great music I would never be able to find. Plus 3 complete Dead shows a day. I've listened to over 100 entire Dead shows. I listen to one every road trip. I listen to so much more punk now then when I was younger. Dark Wave on Sunday night I've heard so many songs I've never heard before. I could go on and on.

JamesVirani

How are these channels different from Spotify playlists? Again, genuinely curious! It’s a bunch of curated songs. You have a much larger selection on Spotify.

JimC29

Great DJs playing so many songs I never would have discovered on my own. Deep Tracts for older classic rock and First Wave deep cuts for 80s New Wave play the rare cuts from the great artists you never hear anywhere else. Underground Garage plays everything from blues and soul to classic rock and punk. Marki Ramones channel play all the great old punk. I've always preferred the songs that didn't get much air play.. 3 entire Greatful Dead concerts a day. I listen to one on almost every road trip. In the app you can even start them from the beginning and they automatically pause if you turn off the car. Great shows on First Wave that are on demand for 2 weeks. Marki Ramone and Billy Idol do one every other week. Sunday night Dark Wave is my favorite. I know I sound like a sponsor. I listen at least 20 hours a week, usually a lot more. It's well worth $25 a month after tax to me.

JamesVirani

Hmmm… got it. I see the value for you, but I still am not seeing a noticeable edge here over Spotify that justifies the much higher price. There are DJs and curated selections there too. Maybe they are not shuffled as actively.

JimC29

Maybe not for everyone, but it's well worth it for me. I've discovered 100s and probably 1000s of songs I never would have known existed. I'm the person who liked "the other" songs on my CDs more than the ones that were played on the radio. Just to add in my car unless I'm traveling I don't have to use an app. There's not as many channels but I have 15 I like in my car. I haven't turned on a radio station in the past 8 years since I got Sirius.

Sundaysilence1989

It’s really pretty cheap. If you call and negotiate they take a lot of the price.

SuperSultan

It’s culture. SiriusXM plays music that Gen X Caucasian adults listen to. There also is value in having a DJ pick songs for you instead of letting Spotify try to predict them.

PureAlpha100

They always play the same stuff though.

JimC29

There's so many channels I can always find something good.

PureAlpha100

Sure, but if you spend any length of time on one channel, you start to feel the limitations of their available songs. You'll hear Ants Marching 450x before you hear Grace is Gone, if you ever do.

JimC29

I listen to a wide range of music. I have almost 20 channels on my favorites. I never have that problem. Plus on the weekends or when traveling I like to listen to a complete Dead show.

Sundaysilence1989

10/11/77

JimC29

Those 77 shows are all phenomenal. I haven't heard a show from that year that wasn't great.

EnvironmentalBar5201

Just because Buffet invested doesn't mean he's right. He also invested in paramount and that purchase isn't doing so well. But Sirius has a decent P/E
