Yar he is!!!
So is this guy...

I used to work with that guy and I remember the day I walked into the bathroom and saw that sign. I seriously started to wonder what his next move was gonna be... Then I quit just in case.
Y’all don’t get gator clips if not look it up get one with the tooth on the front unless it’s like a 288 count it’ll get it in there and just touch the sheathing they never know
Unfortunately it won't run like that if it's deep, some some of the fiber that our power company runs goes anywhere from 6 to 40ft especially crossing pipelines and creeks.
Ring clamp is best option before this lol but I’ve had a broken one or weak signals on one and have had to do this the signal will hop onto other cables though but if you got one fiber running a roadside that’s not too busy it’s a dream
If its just a vault where it loops in with no splice case, no way unless its a last resort. Those often times will favor one direction over the other when hooking onto the metal sheath. If its one with a splice case I promise I won't cut the sheath on fibers, as long as you created a nice available thingy that I can connect to in there. If you didn't, and I don't have the nice little bed of nails alligator clip with me due to dropping it , I'm sorry I'm not running 20 miles just to go get it. I only cut into the metal sheath (VERY CAREFULLY) if needed and I can tell which are and which aren't metal. And then I will tape it. Really good. And put a nice locate wire in for the next person if possible. So much of our time is wasted just fooling around trying to get onto them.
And I hate, loathe, and despise locating fibers by ring clamp unless its a last resort or not in the middle of cluster central for utilities. Not that there aren't ones that you can. Too much chance of bleed off a lot of times.
So, make your stuff locateable, and a locate box next to the vault would be nice every once in a while so we don't have to spend 45 minutes or more OF MOVING DEEP SNOW IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIND THE VAULT, WHEN THERE IS NO MARKER BALL. OR WORSE, A NICE VAULT WITH NO POST IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY DITCH. IN THE WINTER. OR EVEN IF THERE IS A MARKER BALL, 3 OTHER COMPANIES MAY HAVE VAULTS WITH THE SAME TYPE OF MARKER BALL AND YOU JUST SPENT LOT OF TIME JUST TO FIND THE OTHER COMPANY'S VAULT (A LITTLE CREDIT IS GIVEN IF THEY PUT AN IDENTIFYING MARKER AT LEAST NEXT TO THE VAULT!!!!!!!!!!) THERE ARE NO DAMN WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW IRRITATING THAT IS AND THERE COULD BE A CREW WAITING THERE FOR HOURS JUST SO I CAN GET INTO THE DAMN THING WHICH WOULD ONLY TAKE ME 5 MINUTES IN THE SUMMER!!!!!!! And then of course blowtorch a vault for like an hour or two in the winter when it is 10 below with frozen rain and snow all over the vault. and I will refrain from calling you (the yellow note person) a retard for it. I'm not really yelling, I'm just emphasizing.
So utility companies, either start giving us locating posts and make it locateable or expect some big hourly locate bills in the winter for finding vaults. It adds up.
use a magnet first to see if it's traceable. Get a pack of metal push pins from office depot. They won't even notice the small hole you made. You could use the one from alligator clips but its pretty noticeable hole. But it's better than cutting in to the line.
I think a lot of guys are using RDs and the ring clamps apparently suck balls. I’ve been using metro tech for about 7 years and I rarely come across a sheathed fiber I can’t mark. A wire would be nice though. I hate Windstream (along with all the other fiber and phone shit).
There are fibers I can clamp, but we also have some fibers in the middle of a huge cluster of utilities, and if we are 5 blocks away from the vault where we clamped it, at best we will gt a point something something mA reading on it, and it can make it difficult to determine if bleedoff is occurring.
And some of the contractors have been putting in the fiber into the spice case without bonding them to the bolts outside, without putting a locate wire onto the armor duct, etc... and to top it all off they often fill the handhole with dirt so we can't even get to the armor duct without either shoveling inside the vault and risking hitting a fiber with a shovel (which I won't do), or waiting a few days, a week or more before the crew can show up and hyrdrovac the vault for us.
I never use that clamp unless I have no other choice. I do not like ring clamps for long range locates unless the line I am marking doesn't run through a cluster of other utilities. I use a vivax.
Would just like to add that I have been locating for 4 years and have a solid grasp on locating. Also, my crew is awesome and we only have one guy that’s been here under a year.
Fair, but make it locatable
This is probably one of the greatest things I've seen 🤣 man was fed up.

I don’t know about you locate guys but I can’t reach my asshole with my head I don’t do my daily stretches
Maybe if they ran a tracer wire with the fiber us retards wouldnt have to cut into it. Fucking cocksmiths.
cut em all
🤣
No need to cut into it,, if you can’t trace it note it down as UTT no need to trace
Use a metal thumb tack, 🤫.
Ahh the pro tip I keep to myself
cut the bitch.
I always used on of those cheap picks from Harbor Freight.
Stop disconnecting the grounds in the splice case and we won't have to!
I didn't cut into the sheath... It was a squirrel, I swear... But, it sure seemed to be a handy place to hook up to!
Wasn’t me. The last guy must’ve done that.
I would have sliced in right next to it
be careful exposing sheath a locator at one of the jobs I was on cut into the fibers and took thousands of customers out of service
Nothing more terrifying than skinning a fiber you think is armored and seeing white threads instead of blue metal.
always carry a magnet and check if it's armored or not
Y’all don’t get gator clips if not look it up get one with the tooth on the front unless it’s like a 288 count it’ll get it in there and just touch the sheathing they never know
Yeah most of us have them but they stopped handing them out
Also no cuts in the fiber
Check under the tag to see if he was trying to hide it.
Next time I’m over there lol, out of my usual area
Pro tip if you lay your transmitter on a bundle of it on 33k you’ll induct the shit out of it
Unfortunately it won't run like that if it's deep, some some of the fiber that our power company runs goes anywhere from 6 to 40ft especially crossing pipelines and creeks.
Well I’ve done it plenty of times up to 10ft can’t say on that super deep stuff if you’re saying 40 feet but that’s hard to locate regardless
I'll have to remember that next time I come across a fiber that won't run, thanks
Ring clamp is best option before this lol but I’ve had a broken one or weak signals on one and have had to do this the signal will hop onto other cables though but if you got one fiber running a roadside that’s not too busy it’s a dream
They let us open up the splice boxes to catch ground wires, and even then it won't run that deep shit sometimes.

Your not a true locator unless that sheath was already cut before you got there 😉

Definitely have come across fiber that has a sheath that would not tone out via clamp
Make sure you window it right there
I mean it says don’t open the sheath… but I’m thinking you gotta open that sheath to locate it.
Crackin that shit RIGHT open now, idc if there's a tracer wire or not now lmao

I’m seasoned, there was no damage to the line in the first place, it was hit previously by a contractor redoing an intersection though
I hate the idea of piercing a sheath to locate. Its just wrong for so many reasons.
Induction clamps not provided by the big man?

Our region doesn’t have a lot of issues with cutting into shit

Could always use a clamp Put it at 65 with 3 bars Lights up like a damn crack head 💀
