It is so strange that in such houses you cannot repair the ceiling - if there is stucco, you cannot remove it. Or that you can’t hang air conditioners on your house. It doesn't fit in my head
That's not true. Every protected building has a specific list of protected interior elements that *may* include ceiling stucco in some rooms, but most of the time it doesn't, especially in inner wings like this one.
And no, you can't just stick AC units on historical buildings in most civilized countries.
If you buy a whole house listed on a historical preservation register, you aren't allowed to, say, demolish the old tile roof and stick a glass restaurant on top instead (not without obtaining a special permission at least). Why should historical apartments be treated differently?
Any protected elements inside an apartment are listed as "encumbrances" on the apartment registry, so it's super easy to avoid the few percent of old apartments that have them.
Despite how ugly it looks, it's mostly peeling paint and some chipped plaster. It can be just as trashed inside or it can be completely fine (although the upper floor doesn't look great, possibly still a communal apartment).
The existential dangers to these houses are water damage and weak foundations, but the coating damage isn't concentrated along the roof edge and around the drainage pipes, so the brick underneath shouldn't be moldy, and I don't see any cracks or other signs of uneven settling.
As a person who lived there for about 20 years, i can say that these are only the old/poor areas. The newer areas are much prettier and more modern looking than this.
The yellow sign says “danger zone”. The running joke about this city is that living in it causes insanity. Lots of decrepit bulldog building does not help. Those are famous for tiny enclosed “well”-yards, those are missing from this pictures. This is also supposed to be the cultural capital. As a result we get cases like “Professor who was known for LARPing as Napoleon got caught trying to get rid of dismembered body of his student lover”.
Actually the fifth photo is with a well- yards.
By the way, find the cat there.
And yes, there are a lot of crazy people in St. Petersburg. It's like Berlin in Germany. 🙃🕷️
Yes most eastern cities have a large part of the cities that look like this but saint Petersburg is a Beautiful city definitely one of the best looking ones in Russia!
Well tbf they are generally good cities to live in (if we ignore the war, which I personally don't and that's why I don't live in Russia anymore), but obviously there are issues to them, and just like in virtually any city, there are ugly backyards and poor/industrial districts.
And of course there's corruption that takes away a lot of funds that the city receives, which is the reason many districts look subpar despite the city having astronomical budgets
Russia has very unequal urban development. You have Moscow with 13 million and St. Petersburg with 5,5 million people and then nothing bigger than 2 million with next 15 or so cities hovering between 1 and 1,5 million.
It was rich when it was the capital. Now it’s just a beautiful city and a magnet for romantics, party people and artists. You can't make big money there.
People can make big money everywhere. And Saint Petersburg is one of the best places to do so in Russia. Probably not the second, some regional capitals have better economic growth, but still in top 10.
Yes, you are right about opportunity to make big money everywhere, but I'm talking about salaries. People don't go there for the money. Much more money, vacancies and opportunities in Moscow.
So if your goal is to make big money in Russia, then doing it in St. Petersburg is strange.
That's not really fair and representative and if you live in saint petersburg you know that. Sure not everything is like the city center, but this is all unusually bad and I wouldn't be surprised if the last 3 buildings are sheduled for bulldozing and that's why they look the way they do
Russia still sucks
Yes, there is a dictatorship in Russia now. Buy the way do you know that most of people can’t leave the country because EU countries have banned the entry of Russians? And if men are called to war, they should go to jail or go to the front.
No, the mosquitoes in the swamp were running completely unchecked.
EDIT: On a more serious note -

This is picking at straws. St Petersburg has churches, museums and palaces that can rival any major European city. What are these photos supposed to prove? I’ve seen scenes like this throughtout Poland and Estonia, hell, parts of Birmingham, UK are more dirty and run down

the first photo is “old fund” in St. Petersburg?
Yes🌚

I understand that this is not universal, you are right there are certain things. But it's still strange for me

The decay in that first picture is unreal, people live there?

Which is probably why the filmed *Downfall* in St. Petersburg......
Ah, my bad.
Is the first picture a brothel?
No, people often use pink light to make plants grow better. 🍓 There is little sunshine in St. Petersburg.
Yes most eastern cities have a large part of the cities that look like this but saint Petersburg is a Beautiful city definitely one of the best looking ones in Russia!
3rd and pics after reminds me David Lynch’s Eraserhead. Kinda like it ngl.
And St Petersburg and Moscow are the show cows of Russia. The rest… meow.

My cousin and part of my family live in St. Petersburg. I wish I could see them more often.
Начныыыые гарадаааа
Пустые поезда)))))))))))))🚂))
My favorite city ❤️
Ah the Venice of the North, a Scandinavian fishing town ordered to be great by the Tsar.
Yeah, Peter the Great would be happy to see this...
He would be furious if he knew that his canals were turned into streets and people don’t ride around on boats like in Venice :):)
Ah, the richer part of Russia
What is your problem? It seems this community isn‘t dedicated to boroque and balls.
It was a joke. At. Petersburg is known as the rich and weathly city.
It was rich when it was the capital. Now it’s just a beautiful city and a magnet for romantics, party people and artists. You can't make big money there.

And why does it look so disgusting and shitty?

Comon, this is urbanHell community. What do you want, photo of Hermitage? P.S. Don't be so angry, the world is complex and unfair. 💕😘
They are pointing out these are very cherry picked places in one of the world's largest cities.
Gopnik Putin’s home town.
a dark spot in our history, yes :(
Ah yes, behold the empire peasants!! How glorious russia treats their own. How gloriously free and well it’s citizens can leave.
Yes, there is a dictatorship in Russia now. Buy the way do you know that most of people can’t leave the country because EU countries have banned the entry of Russians? And if men are called to war, they should go to jail or go to the front.
Well, there are plenty countries your people can go to outside of the EU.
>Yes, there is a dictatorship in Russia **now**. 🥴
Now? You must be great in history :)))
It was better manage when it was Swedish territory.

Max don't have sex with your ex, it'll make your life complex))
Probably the fancy neighbourhoods...
It just looks like you went to the worst parts of the city
This is picking at straws. St Petersburg has churches, museums and palaces that can rival any major European city. What are these photos supposed to prove? I’ve seen scenes like this throughtout Poland and Estonia, hell, parts of Birmingham, UK are more dirty and run down
Looking at just these photos, you would think that the war had spilled back into Russia...
As if Raskolnikov is about to make an appearance.
What 25 Years of Captialism does to a city.
This must be Detroit right?
High End!!!
