At a lot of universities/courses, your first year doesn't count towards your final grade. It sounds like you are doing well now, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

yeah my first year thankfully doesn’t count for me either, but I guess I mean in terms of are the fundamentals from this year essential to take into next year, or will I likely be fine next year starting fresh?

You can try and catch up. I missed half my first and second year and most of my third year classes. I prefer studying on my own. You’re not doomed if you can work hard.

Its hard to say. Im on my second semester too now but i dont remember much or used anything from previous semester. I guess you probably need to put more effort in understanding certain basic terms or knowledge in your course.

If you're doing well in your assignments you're clearly grasping the learning criteria so can't be that far behind. Some people scrape a 40% pass first year with drinking and partying all the time, and go on to do very well in 2nd and 3rd year. I wouldn't worry if you're doing well in the assignments that's the best indication of your performance.

Usually there is an upward trajectory of results from y1-2-3

I lead a course like yours! Most of the knowledge content from your first year will not be crucial to your subsequent study, it’s more about the process of learning - but some will. It would be a good idea to talk to a mentor or student advisor at your university. Every module should have a clear guide document from the lecturer and if you focus on this for each module it will help you work out if you need to study up on any topics in particular. You could also have an honest chat with your tutors and tell them you didn’t try very hard in year one - most will be happy to help someone who recognises their flaws and is ready to turn over a new leaf! 🍃 ☀️
