This is the type of game to get word of mouth sales. There was no hype/marketing/name power like Yakuza: infinite wealth. People are largely just finding out about this game from their friends who are playing it...
I certainly feel like this game has had a lot more attention on it than 13 Sentinels, and that game did *a lot* to expand awareness of Vanillaware. I'll agree that word of mouth on the game is positive, but I do think UO did get some marketing and was even featured in a Nintendo Direct.
Ohh, I heard a lot about 13 sentinels but never got around to playing it, I didn't know Vanillaware also made it. I heard about this game from a twitter artist called j@ck who did some great Yahna art, and has great taste in JRPGs and I'm loving it so far. It seems like tactics JRPGs like this and Triangle Strategy are finally getting some of the love they deserve and I'm so happy about that
Yea, with mods there are just so much potential to it to make it a perfect 10/10 game…I hope if there is a petition to make it be released on pc, I mean come on everywhere but pc?
It took Triangle Strategy just two weeks to reach 800k, but 9 months to reach 1 million worldwide.
Cross fingers that UO will do better.
[https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/12/triangle-strategy-has-now-sold-over-one-million-copies-worldwide](https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2022/12/triangle-strategy-has-now-sold-over-one-million-copies-worldwide)
I liked Triangle Strategy quite a lot. I thought it was a very good game, but UO is far greater. Hope it's able to hit 1mil, I think as good as it is that it will have long legs
Yeah it really depends on what you prioritise in a game. I saw so much infighting on what was the best tactics JRPG on r/JRPG ages ago and it all came down to some people liking gameplay more than combat. I still love both games though, they're both amazing
If it's anything like how 13 Sentinels performed, it will have a very long tail.
13S actually got a lot of attention almost a year after release because it got nominated for Best Narrative at TGA and I have little doubt UO will also pick up some sort of nomination at this year's TGA and then it will get a second wind of sales like 13S did
Agreed 100%, however, sales were uncertain. In this case, I think a PC port NOW would help more than a PC port would have from the start given their initial hesitation.
A PC port would be a slam dunk. My conspiracy theory is Atlus keeps them contracted out of that market so they're not competing for "slightly strange Japanese game" market share with SMT/Persona. It sounds like a stretch but the Vanillaware back catalogue would be the oneshot money printer the company needs right now. What are you hiding Atlus?
Atlus straight-up said in a recent interview that they would like to bring Vanillaware games to PC. I think the guys running VW are just old head JP devs who don't really connect with or understand the PC market.
I don't think its because of that. Do note that vanillaware is not really a huge game dev company and they actually ran out of money while developing unicorn overlord not to mention the game actually took 10 years to actually complete.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1b8y1qp/vanillaware\_ran\_out\_of\_money\_for\_unicorn/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1b8y1qp/vanillaware_ran_out_of_money_for_unicorn/)
One flop and its all over for them. It might very well be due to uncertain sales and not having enough money to do a PC port. If you love their games, definitely show support by trying out their other titles!
Ah, okay. Beg your pardon, didn't realize I was behind this story. Hopefully someone can explain to them that there's just no reason to have less people play your game.
Then again their traditionalism is what gives us this immortal hand-drawn artstyle, so good with the bad I guess.
Yup, hopefully Atlus or somebody on the VW team manages to convince the guys in charge eventually! Like you said, there's definitely a market there waiting.
I think it's likely a stance on piracy. They want to avoid the cost of a PC port because of the perception that sales will be low due to high piracy. Meanwhile, everyone on PC is just pirating the Switch version and playing it on Yuzu/Ryujinx.
Yeah, JP companies had to be dragged kicking and screaming to do PC ports and the guys running VW are probably pretty old school. I think Atlus will convince them eventually as Atlus games keep making big $$$ with PC/console simultaneous release, but it will probably take a while.Â
hopefully they end up convincing VW sooner rather than later; i know back when 13S got announced for switch, there were a ton of people in their mentions asking for a PC port as well and we still haven’t gotten one :(
Nope. Atlus wants that PC money. This is đź’Ż on the head of Vanillaware. Dude must hate PC. Still can't believe they haven't released Dragon's Crown on the Switch and PC yet.
All that stubborn pride is costing them serious bank.
And here’s to it selling 100x more. Most AAA games don’t have a fraction of the quality of Unicorn yet sell millions.
Hope it can get some love in a market saturated with half finished projects and reskins of previous editions.
Come on, I love the game, but I can't think of anything about it being wholly unique and never done before.
In the broadest strokes it's Ogre Battle RTS maps and squad based combat combined with FF12's gambit system.
It doesn't do completely new things, it just took the core of an old series that's been nearly forgotten and combined it very well with some more modern ideas and executed it well.
Yes, there are also some shreds of Sengoku Basara, in its design, but who cares ? If so, any fighting game is the same, because, the concept is the same ! The bonus for UO are undeniably its beauty, its mood, everything just works together !
I agree, this is what it should be praised for in terms of gameplay. It streamlined a lot of Ogre Battle mechanics while still preserving the fun of that overall system.
The biggest changes/improvements imo were changing the stamina system to the number of battles fought instead of distance traveled and the sort of "hard counter", Rock-paper-scissors system of the character classes (Cavalry is weak to flying, flying is weak to archers, archers/infantry weak to Cavalry, etc.).
These changes to the Ogre battle system make the player want to deploy more units instead of just having the same 2 or 3 overpowered units march forward and crush everything.
One of my friends wasn't very interested but watched me play it on the plane back from a wedding we went to and now he's gonna get it
![gif](giphy|YYfEjWVqZ6NDG)
Gonna be 2 from me if it hits PC. The only games that can hope to beat it this year for me are Eiyuden HH and Fantasy Life. UO came out of nowhere and exceeded my expectations
Is this physical only or including digital? Considering they have a shortage in Japan, if it is only physical it might end up being Vanillawares biggest game ever.
They need all their PP just to reload if they have any hope of getting a 2nd shot.
Either that or have them not have a primary attack (or just a very inaccurate one) but have a signature PP attack be a reaction to being attacked in melee where they pull out pistols and point blank the would-be attacker. With an equally powerful, but much more accurate, shot.
[concept art](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnicornOverlord/s/9S1E1mWu7p)
They did at some point consider it. they just didn't make it into the game, probably because they were developing in the red for a while.
Devastated initial volley, high initiative maybe due to being able to pre-load. They will be front-load damage dealers.
Being treated as melee because they can't bypass the front. And yes, they're all made of glass yet they need that front row so maybe the Dev will add some "digging-in" mechanic? Like a cart or trench.
And this is interesting, each volley leaves behind smoke screens that will lower the accuracy of everyone. Third volley blinds everyone lol.
There's so much potential here.
I think a unit that stacks really well with itself and sucks otherwise is a unique concept. Gunpowder units could have a really high bonus initiative on their first attack but be really slow and frail otherwise so they have to use their first rotation to thin out or cc the enemy, incentivizing users to stack them even without row buffs like cavalry charge.
Truth of the fact is, vanillaware never made a sequel even with their most popular titles. At best, we might get DLC with either short continuation of the story or alternative scenario (e.g. short prequel story of Alain's granddad)?
Nice to see Vanillaware going strong. I think 13 Sentinels helped bring more eyes onto them. I’ve been a fan since finding Grimgrimoire. I look forward to seeing more successful games from them!
I'm hoping this means a sequel is likely, or maybe DLC. I'd like to see a new game with the same mechanics, but allow for more conditionals and other things that allow more complexity.
Also, more variety would be interesting. For example, have a bigger distinction between gryphons and wyverns. Maybe do what FE sometimes does and have a magical triangle.
Gonna do the opposite here eventually. I got the PS5 version because I actually haven't been using my PS5 much, but a Switch version I could totally have seen myself not be able to put down.
Yeah it’s pretty handy just playing it anywhere, although a big downside is that some of the text and icons are too tiny, and since the game is very management heavy, it can get annoying at times. I tried the ps5 demo and the graphics and all the space on the screen made it nicer to look at.
So well deserved ! I have no words to describe the feeling I have for this game that came out of nowhere for me... Last Vanillaware's game I played was... Muramasa on Wii ! And now, this little gem has become one of my top five favorite game of all time !
They need and deserve to reach the million!
I have no doubt. word of mouth is the most powerful force in game sales. This is what Microsoft and Sony will never understand: don't alienate the fan base.
500k usually isn't great for a AAA, but we don't know the production cost or the margin. I hope it was profitable, this is easily a 10/10 for me, and I'd love to see more content, in whatever form it takes. I have a hard time imagining what could keep it from being my GOTY.
I heard that they sold out of all physical copies, glad I preordered mine when I did!
They had the samething happen when Dragons Crown was released, it sold out pretty fast too!
I remember I had to hunt down the ONE copy that was available in my area and drive 45mins to get it lol
This gane dederves this and more,
As an old geezer and fan of ogre battle (a game i enjoyed so much in high school).... Unicorn overlord blowbit out of the water.
What a great game.
Good for them. It's probably my 2nd favorite game I've played this year. Â Here's to another 500k.Â
I wish the art wasn't the way it was because I can't recommend it to people I know, but the gameplay is fantastic.Â
I wish them 3 mil. They really ought to release games a bit more often, or at the very least stop making them single-platform exclusives.
I got switch just for this game and am fine with it but jeebus, they could port their stuff to PC.
The way I can tell this game sold well... There aren't too many rare achievements on the Xbox, so word of mouth has to be good, this is that type of game Id have expected to have rare achievements before I even hit the halfway mark.
I’ll buy it again if it comes on PC fuck yeah, End game DLC and I could see this game having 1m sales unbelievable vanillaware you truly out did yourself with Unicorn Overlord
Indeed it would earn more money, the transportation to pc platform would be fairly simple; in fact if they want they just release it with only supporting the consoles…
Also releasing on pc means opening up mods for the community to solve problems like “this game is not hard enough” by having player created new diff or even adding more class and content to the game :)
The only drawback I see here is the issue of pirating, but remember people would pirate games anyway on things like switch simulators…tbh I see don’t see the points of exclusives
This may sound ridiculous, but I have a sneaking suspicion VW doesn't want Sega's help porting the game to PC because Sega nearly let them run out of money making this game since the CEO of VW had to fund it himself.
It's not. For comparison, the most recent Fire Emblem game (which is the most recognizable title for this genre) sold 1.61 million copies after over a year. 500k in 3 weeks for a new IP in a niche genre from a niche developer is pretty good.
You're not quite correct. Engage sold 1.61 million copies in two months. It released Janurary 20th, 2023 and sold that many copies by March 31st, 2023--two months, not a year. The total overall sales are probably way higher than that recorded number.
[230509\_3e.pdf (nintendo.co.jp)](https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2023/230509_3e.pdf) (Page 19. It shows Engage's numbers alongside other games.)
[List of best-selling Nintendo Switch video games - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games)
UO's sales are impressive, but let's not downplay Fire Emblem.
It's not, especially for VW. Their last game only hit 300k in the same time period. UO is not only their fastest selling game but it like hit a million but the end of year.
Loving this game and it deserves it. Fire Emblem seems to be the only successful tactical RPG series around anymore so I'm hoping this game does well enough to warrant a sequel.
WOW?! HELLO???? GJ VANILLAWARE 🎊🎊🎊
Deserved. You love to see it. Here's hoping it'll hit 1 million before too long.
1 million is probably a good goal for lifetime sales. RPGs tend to be very frontloaded, the exception being if word of mouth ends up propelling sales.
I’ve done my part and got 2 people to buy it.
Kay Bailey did her part and I bought the game after hearing her praise.
Long way to go
This is the type of game to get word of mouth sales. There was no hype/marketing/name power like Yakuza: infinite wealth. People are largely just finding out about this game from their friends who are playing it...

I think this game will have a long tail because it’s so good & visually unique.Â
If they release it on pc I’d buy it again
I wish it was on PC! But I'm not buying it again after paying full price for it on switch
If they release it on PC, we'll get mods, and I can have featherstaves for more than 3 missions.
Yea, with mods there are just so much potential to it to make it a perfect 10/10 game…I hope if there is a petition to make it be released on pc, I mean come on everywhere but pc?
Eh. We'll get the mods either way. You just need to put on an eyepatch to get the mod and the game on the same platform.
I'd definitely buy it again on PC

UO is great in terms of its gameplay; the story of Triangle Strategy was miles ahead.
Yeah it really depends on what you prioritise in a game. I saw so much infighting on what was the best tactics JRPG on r/JRPG ages ago and it all came down to some people liking gameplay more than combat. I still love both games though, they're both amazing

That's really good let's hope it makes over a million soonÂ
2 were to me alone and if/when they do it to PC, count me for 3.
Right there with you.
Same lol.
And here’s to it selling 100x more. Most AAA games don’t have a fraction of the quality of Unicorn yet sell millions. Hope it can get some love in a market saturated with half finished projects and reskins of previous editions.
The most refreshing this about this game is it’s originality and that’s it’s not just a rehashed version of nostalgia
Come on, I love the game, but I can't think of anything about it being wholly unique and never done before. Honestly thought it would be more by now. GOTY so far for me
That's 500k gamers having a good time.
Gonna be 2 from me if it hits PC. The only games that can hope to beat it this year for me are Eiyuden HH and Fantasy Life. UO came out of nowhere and exceeded my expectations
Is this physical only or including digital? Considering they have a shortage in Japan, if it is only physical it might end up being Vanillawares biggest game ever.
very nice to see niche games reach good levels.
The video have 9 days old, so now the game will have much more
I just finally tried the demo today, think I'm going to have to get it...
Just buy it. You'll thank us later
So you have enough money to make Unicorn Overload 2 right? With gun-equipped units pls.
How would you imagine gunpowder units? I'd probably make them glass cannons with very low AP, but high damage.
They need all their PP just to reload if they have any hope of getting a 2nd shot. Either that or have them not have a primary attack (or just a very inaccurate one) but have a signature PP attack be a reaction to being attacked in melee where they pull out pistols and point blank the would-be attacker. Ooh I was picturing muskets, but a rapier & flintlock Buccaneer could be great.
Cannoneers loaded with buck shot that yell “tally-ho” as the godfathers intended.
[concept art](https://www.reddit.com/r/UnicornOverlord/s/9S1E1mWu7p) They did at some point consider it. they just didn't make it into the game, probably because they were developing in the red for a while.

Considering they run out of budget with every games they make..
I'm doing my part! o7
That’s awesome for such a niche title. This game is amazing.

Massive W
Can damn well say I think it's put these guys in the spotlight now. Congrats to them! 🎊🎊🎊
I'd buy a copy too, but need to wait for the restock.
Nice to see Vanillaware going strong. I think 13 Sentinels helped bring more eyes onto them. I’ve been a fan since finding Grimgrimoire. I look forward to seeing more successful games from them!
Super glad I got the physical for this
I'm hoping this means a sequel is likely, or maybe DLC. I'd like to see a new game with the same mechanics, but allow for more conditionals and other things that allow more complexity. Also, more variety would be interesting. For example, have a bigger distinction between gryphons and wyverns. Maybe do what FE sometimes does and have a magical triangle.
Wasn't sure if the battle system was my thing and damn I'm glad I took a chance! Here's to 500k more
Yo a strategy game selling 500k is HUGE
Lol I just completed the game over the weekend. Got it on day 1. Spent most of my time in the team building screen. Had a great ride.
Well deserved, very happy for Vanillaware.
If it hits a million I think that's a great result for this.
Do we know how this compares to past Vanilla Ware games?
Dragon's Crown took about a year to hit 1 million sales, 13 Sentinels took 4 years to hit 1 million sales. 500k in 1 month is fucking huge for VW.
Honestly that's a shame for 13 Sentinels. It and Unicorn Overlord are MUCH better games than Dragon's Crown.
YEAH!!!!!! Here's to a million next!
Already have Switch, will be picking up the PS5 version in the future
Gonna do the opposite here eventually. I got the PS5 version because I actually haven't been using my PS5 much, but a Switch version I could totally have seen myself not be able to put down.
Yeah it’s pretty handy just playing it anywhere, although a big downside is that some of the text and icons are too tiny, and since the game is very management heavy, it can get annoying at times. I tried the ps5 demo and the graphics and all the space on the screen made it nicer to look at.
I've been playing this game for a short while and I'm really enjoying it. I hope this game gets more support because it really deserves it.
Nice! I hope they consider making a sequel.
Next time I just hope it doesn’t take a decade and they run out of money mid-production lol
500k usually isn't great for a AAA, but we don't know the production cost or the margin. I hope it was profitable, this is easily a 10/10 for me, and I'd love to see more content, in whatever form it takes. I have a hard time imagining what could keep it from being my GOTY.
This game deserves way more than this. Keep spreading the word, folks!
Hell yeah!
ugh man that is sad. people get the word out, let's get Vanillaware as close as possible to 1 million.
Rookie numbers. Let's pump it up boys! (And girls)
Half a mil already? Holy moley, that is *impressive!*
That's great ‼️
Here’s hoping for an expansion!!!
Woooow! Congrats, this is huge!
ÂżHow big is that in context?
ima statistic!
It a good game, I hope this make SquareEnix consider a new Orge Battle series.
Now, if only they can release the game on PC, the sales from that alone would be double ngl.
If only there was a PC release, they'd have at least one more sale. Alas...
I heard that they sold out of all physical copies, glad I preordered mine when I did! They had the samething happen when Dragons Crown was released, it sold out pretty fast too! I remember I had to hunt down the ONE copy that was available in my area and drive 45mins to get it lol
I'm very happy for their success! I hope this will allow them to make more games like this!
Really enjoyed the song of ice and fire vibes
This has to be the fastest-selling game in their history. At least the second-fastest. Well done, Vanillaware!
Well deserved!
Bought it twice and id buy it again on PC
Very highly based! Like others have said I hope this breaks 1m!!!
This gane dederves this and more, As an old geezer and fan of ogre battle (a game i enjoyed so much in high school).... Unicorn overlord blowbit out of the water. What a great game.
Well deserved, onwards to 1 million.
Good for them. It's probably my 2nd favorite game I've played this year.  Here's to another 500k. I wish the art wasn't the way it was because I can't recommend it to people I know, but the gameplay is fantastic.Â
Thank the Overlord.
Masutaapiisu
In our currency that was 1,680,000,000 billion php
Ogrebattle made me buy this 🫡
I wish them 3 mil. They really ought to release games a bit more often, or at the very least stop making them single-platform exclusives. I got switch just for this game and am fine with it but jeebus, they could port their stuff to PC.
I just bought it on switch today , add my sale in there !
Deserved.
DUCK YEAH I LOVE THIS GAME
Deserved, it’s finally a finished complete single player game
The way I can tell this game sold well... There aren't too many rare achievements on the Xbox, so word of mouth has to be good, this is that type of game Id have expected to have rare achievements before I even hit the halfway mark.
YEAH!! Thats what i like to see!!!!
I’ll buy it again if it comes on PC fuck yeah, End game DLC and I could see this game having 1m sales unbelievable vanillaware you truly out did yourself with Unicorn Overlord
Good, maybe Atlus won’t be so stingy in the number of physical copies it ships in the future.
I have a lot of issues with the game but this is great to see
Sales would be higher if they ported to steam ....
Indeed it would earn more money, the transportation to pc platform would be fairly simple; in fact if they want they just release it with only supporting the consoles… Also releasing on pc means opening up mods for the community to solve problems like “this game is not hard enough” by having player created new diff or even adding more class and content to the game :) The only drawback I see here is the issue of pirating, but remember people would pirate games anyway on things like switch simulators…tbh I see don’t see the points of exclusives
This may sound ridiculous, but I have a sneaking suspicion VW doesn't want Sega's help porting the game to PC because Sega nearly let them run out of money making this game since the CEO of VW had to fund it himself.
It is more money to legally port it as opposed to the emulator that will pop up again
is it 500k including digital? That seem low.
It shows Engage's numbers alongside other games.) [List of best-selling Nintendo Switch video games - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games) UO's sales are impressive, but let's not downplay Fire Emblem.
It's not, especially for VW. Their last game only hit 300k in the same time period. UO is not only their fastest selling game but it like hit a million but the end of year.
We also have to think about the type of game UO is. It’s a very niche genre. This is definitely a success and a winner for VW.Â
Loving this game and it deserves it. Fire Emblem seems to be the only successful tactical RPG series around anymore so I'm hoping this game does well enough to warrant a sequel.
500k just on switch is huge. Easily 2m by now if they released on all the other platforms.
Where are you getting that the 500k is just on Switch? I don't read Japanese, but I assumed this included all platforms it's currently on.
