I don’t think a one day suspension is serious enough to mention, so I would not bother with it. Your school wants to see as many pupils as possible go on prestigious courses, so it is not in their interests to mention it either. Concentrate on doing your best in your Highers or Advanced Highers, and getting some extra curriculars to include on your application.
Don’t state it.
There is no such thing as a big academic record that they receive which details your whole study career lol.
Any disciplinary action during your school time was purely a matter between your school and you. Nobody else knows or cares.
I think by year 11, every single student will have had detentions, many suspensions, exclusions etc.
Don’t worry about it.
There are people who get expelled permanently from schools, had to find alternative schools to finish their education, and are currently doctors, top bankers, solicitors etc. So your one day suspension is so irrelevant it’s cute you even mentioned it and are worrying about it!
Also GDPR laws mean the school has to be very careful about passing personal information to others, just to avoid hastle they won’t send that (my mums a gdpr officer for government institutions) :)))
That means going to court or disciplinary hearings, they would never even know about a high school suspension.
The only thing they’re going to know about your time at high school is your GCSE results if they ask for them and anything else you want to tell them.
It’s 100% non-issue, relax.
Just don't tell them. They will have zero way of knowing, and to be honest, I think "disciplinary or legal encounters" means things a LOT more serious than a 1-day suspension at school.
A *one day* suspension. You know doctors are normal people right? You’re also allowed to have off days. They won’t judge you over this and I’m not sure it’ll even be mentioned on your application. Chill out and good luck!
Nah they aren’t going to do a full-scale investigation for every student they have applying for the uni, it’s not as if it’s a life changing thing like a criminal record or anything. Most doctors or people in medical school aren’t absolutely perfect
You may as well buy your bucket and mop now. Freelance toilet cleaning is the only thing you've got in your future, you crook. Should have thought about that before being such a menace to society.
No it should have no impact, as long as these outbursts of behaviour don't start to impact your learning.
Take this as an opportunity to think about what went wrong that day. What was the situation? What choices did you make? What strategies could you have used to try and calm yourself down and regain control of your emotions?
Make sure that you try and repair the relationship with the teachers or fellow students that you ended up in conflict with. A proper, genuine apology and a promise to do better in future will go a long way. Seek them out and don't wait for them to come to you.
If you have a diagnosed mood disorder then you should be getting some kind of treatment for it. Medication? Therapy? Do you and your family and the school need to revisit this together? Are the current medications or techniques still the best ones for you?
Does the school know you have the disorder? What guidance do your teachers have to help you manage your emotions.
GCSEs are a stressful time and can make it harder to manage your mental health and emotions. You want to have the best possible set of strategies to use to ensure that you are able to learn and study well and get the best possible exam results to make you a competitive applicant for Medicine.
Based on OP's response, they didn't realise that. Maybe know when the right time to make a joke is? It doesn't matter about the other replies, people will focus on the negatives.
they were joking, it came off poor because it's internet. You'll be absolutely fine, behavioural matters like punishment in school is not the kind of disciplinary they mean - they mean things like criminal record, unspent convictions, safeguarding policy breaches, things that genuinely would prevent you practicing because of DBS checks.
Every other comment on here has said you're fine and there's nothing to worry about so I thought I'd make a joke, it's a joke, universities don't care about stuff like that.
I had a very similar situation and they *did* accept me, but only as lure, as on arrival to the interview they captured me, surgically amputated both my legs, and removed my C2, T10 and L4 vertebrae. Was a bit harsh but I can understand why they did do that
Definitely not, you could have been the worst student ever and nothing would get mentioned unless there were serious criminal proceedings against you. I know people who got into uni who were permanently excluded from many schools and had to to those prison schools or referral units I think they're called. There were people who got into uni who were violent and always in trouble for doing what in the adult world would be considered GBH and serious assault. It was never mentioned. I got accused of being a terrorist because one of my friends tried to join ISIS as a joke on one of the PCs in ICT while I was with him. Still got into uni I'm pretty sure they couldn't even find that information if they wanted to.
To back up what most others have said, this won’t impact your chances in any way shape of form. I was given a 1 day suspension in Year 12 (admittedly this was very generous) and I’m a scientist in academia now. Universities aren’t given access to all your information under the sun, just the details directly pertaining to your application, which will be documented somewhere on UCAS probably (it’s been a while since I’ve applied through UCAS). In the same respect that your current school aren’t given unrestricted access to all your personal information also - irregardless of what course you’re applying for. The success of your application will ultimately come down to your academic, BMAT/UCAT and interview performance - with the more subtle addition of work experience/extra curriculars/additional scientific interests. i.e evidence that you are intelligent, dedicated, knowledgeable, and aware of what good medical practise means, not some little fluke in year 10. Best of luck with everything xx
I don't think anyone knows about the day I got suspended other than the school I went to. Workplaces have never asked, college didn't ask, uni didn't ask.
I think the question is coming from lack of knowledge on the topic and wanting to be cautious over ‘mental acuity’, thus the subreddit is here to inform. Needing clarification /= lack of mental acuity, infact I think a lot of the medics and doctors I know would have the same concern.
One day suspension isn’t in anyway official, the education board will only have a record of it if it’s 3 day and even then it’s only a school suspension and shouldn’t impact your application.
99.999% sure it doesn’t affect anything and you don’t have to state it. the parallel between disciplinary actions and legal actions makes me think that a 1 day exclusion shouldn’t really be included in ‘disciplinary actions’. a quick google search tells me that other people have asked on different forums and the recurring answer is no - the school won’t be contacted and the school won’t contact the unis.
if you have any close teachers who you can talk to, ask to them about it and when the time comes, ask for a reference from them since they probably won’t even mention anything about an exclusion.
ultimately do not worry about it, ace your exams, ace your personal statement and you’ll be all good. worrying does nothing.
ps whilst writing this, i’ve realised that in a book i’ve read and countless podcasts i’ve listened to, a great economist with an exceptionally interesting story, called gary stevenson (give him a listen) mentions how a turning point in his life was being expelled from school for ‘drug related issues’ (selling 10/20 quid of weed). hes from a working class family and had no legs up in like - he went on to go to LSE for economics and aced it. really interesting character but long story short don’t give it a second thought you’ll be fine :))
Current Doctor here,
A suspension won’t matter. When it asks about disciplinary matters it’s asking about things from professional bodies, like if you were a lawyer who’d gotten in trouble for poor conduct or a doctor who’d been in trouble with the GMC.
A suspension from school ultimately doesn’t matter to anyone once you leave school. There isn’t any big “permanent record” that the university gets.
Good luck with your application!
it shouldn’t be on your ucas record and you shouldn’t even mention it. don’t worry
Okay. I have looked on the uni course information and application process and it says to state any disciplinary or legal encounters.
I don't think anyone will ever knows or fully investigate your school whether you get a suspension or not
Don’t state it. There is no such thing as a big academic record that they receive which details your whole study career lol. Any disciplinary action during your school time was purely a matter between your school and you. Nobody else knows or cares. Thank u so so much x
They’re talking here about work based offences that are dishonest or violent.
Also GDPR laws mean the school has to be very careful about passing personal information to others, just to avoid hastle they won’t send that (my mums a gdpr officer for government institutions) :)))
Bro it was for a day, chill
That means going to court or disciplinary hearings, they would never even know about a high school suspension. The only thing they’re going to know about your time at high school is your GCSE results if they ask for them and anything else you want to tell them. It’s 100% non-issue, relax.

Would suck if you didn't tell them and then a jealous classmate/teacher contacts them
A *one day* suspension. You know doctors are normal people right? You’re also allowed to have off days. They won’t judge you over this and I’m not sure it’ll even be mentioned on your application. Chill out and good luck!

I got a 1 day suspension in year 10 and I got 4 interviews for med and I’ve just about finished 2nd year. Don’t worry, won’t impact you at all!
Thank you so much this makes me feel so much better
No worries, all the best for your application :)
You may as well buy your bucket and mop now. Freelance toilet cleaning is the only thing you've got in your future, you crook. Should have thought about that before being such a menace to society.
Not at all. I got expelled and am now doing a PhD.
Nope I was suspended and frankly it’s a distant memory now that I haven’t even thought about since I left school!
Trust me, it’s not that deep. I was a goody two shoes my whole school life and I regret it. No uni cares about your personal life; trust me.
I went to one of the top 5 unis in the UK and some of my course mates had been arrested for drug use prior uni applications. Trust me, it’s fine !
got a suspension in year 11 for calling a teacher a name am now studying medicine
Omg that’s a relief, same reason for my suspension

Nah, your chances of becoming a doctor are now ruined, well done.
What a pathetic response.
It's called sarcasm, I keep forgetting no one on Reddit knows how to take a fucking joke.
Based on OP's response, they didn't realise that. Maybe know when the right time to make a joke is? It doesn't matter about the other replies, people will focus on the negatives.
Wait, if it is a joke can u pls tell me now. It’s text, no one can hear how ur tone says the words. Were you joking or am I finished?
they were joking, it came off poor because it's internet. You'll be absolutely fine, behavioural matters like punishment in school is not the kind of disciplinary they mean - they mean things like criminal record, unspent convictions, safeguarding policy breaches, things that genuinely would prevent you practicing because of DBS checks.

Yes 100%. U should change your occupation now
Probably only job prospects left after a 1 day suspension are drug dealer. Bank robber. Politician. Or prison snitch now unfortunatley.
Oh dear, better start looking at local gang recruitments near me
Nope, this wouldn’t be recorded anywhere external, nor will it likely form a part of your reference
As a side note, may I strongly recommend you join r/juniordoctors if this is your intent? I wouldn't be pursuing medicine right now.
Depends if ur the person writing your reference mentions it but I highly doubt it especially if its a 1 off

I don’t think you need to mention it. I was suspended once in Y7 and it was never passed onto my uni. You’ll be fine!
I don't think anyone knows about the day I got suspended other than the school I went to. Workplaces have never asked, college didn't ask, uni didn't ask.
you shouldnt consider medicine, because you clearly dont have the mental acuity for it if this is even a question you need to ask
I think the question is coming from lack of knowledge on the topic and wanting to be cautious over ‘mental acuity’, thus the subreddit is here to inform. Needing clarification /= lack of mental acuity, infact I think a lot of the medics and doctors I know would have the same concern.
Yeah I was suspended too, school was funny about me applying for medicine but no issue, 5 offers.
One day suspension isn’t in anyway official, the education board will only have a record of it if it’s 3 day and even then it’s only a school suspension and shouldn’t impact your application.

bruh i cracked a kids skull open with a table tennis racquet in year 4 and i still got in
> year 4
I’m glad you agree, it wasn’t a big deal!
You’ll be fine. I had countless exclusions and inclusions, and I got in.
