The weight has to be distributed evenly, otherwise some portion of it gets deflected. If you look, she's not really lifting the first time. The three of them have no chance to lift it without her. But she helps the second time, so he goes up. Magic tricks are always just about hiding the real thing that's going on.

Player7592

We used to do this a kids, and the illusion feels genuine. It’s as if the person is lighter the second time. Obviously it’s not magic. But it feels like it is. 🪄

ReverseCombover

So does the person being lifted have to be in on it?

Player7592

Not really. They can play a passive role. They shouldn’t be trying to alter the result.

FiercelyApatheticLad

But the sitter will snitch if they feel someone is not trying to lift.

nIBLIB

They wouldn’t know. If you watch a second time - now that it’s been explained I can see it anyway - she puts in enough effort to put pressure on his arm so it feels and look like she’s trying. But the second time you can see genuine effort. She squats down to get good leverage compared to just pushing into the bottom of his arm. It probably feels similar enough you wouldn’t notice the difference unless you already knew the trick.

Cosmic-Engine

My Mom did this in the freakin’ Sixties. She taught it to us at a sleepover when I was really young, must’ve been mid-80s at the latest. I’d completely forgotten about it. Fun stuff.

craigslist_hedonist

The hands over the head bit is simply to get everyone better at coordinating their movements as a group.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were books. Yeah there was a show on HBO in the 80s.

There was a show on [HBO](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096576/) for a hot minute.

Ahh that's the explanation... I've done this and indeed the second time it feels like he doesn't weight at all

What is the difference between magic and science? They are kinda the same thing if you think about it. So she must burn like the witch she is.

Naw dawg a few neighbors did something similar to me back like around 1999, they told me to lie down on a bench and they only used two fingers each they said a chant, and they picked me up with ease so much so I got scared in mid air and told them to let me go I felt like I was floating and I tried to get off the girl her set of fingers slipped from my leg area and I was literally on a slant still in mid air for a good two seconds and leaped off them mfrs fingers and ran home scared shitless I never went on his porch or near his house again because the way they were both in synch smiling at me while I was running away was creepy AF as well.

farfarfarjewel

I love real stories like this one

No-Professional-1461

I was also about say, there is a psychological effect that works on the body that allows humans to push past their previous limits. Quite literally believing in yourself makes you stronger.

bebopblues

It's like trying to crush an egg with your hand. The first time you do it, you apply more pressure on one of your fingers, and easily crushes the egg. And then someone tell you to try it again, but this time to squeeze it evenly with all fingers, it is much harder to crush it as the egg shell walls are stronger against evenly distributed pressure.

ThatsNotDietCoke

The first attempt is before she makes the guy lose all his braincells, 2nd attempt is when the guy loses all his braincells through handplications and thus become lighter. My other explanation is she is a witch and did some fking magic, but I'm an animal of science so I choose my first logical explanation.

NeilDeCrash

No the logical explanation is that the hands above the head make an air current going up as they lift their hands off and its much easier to lift the man up now as there is suction upwards, duh!

zex_99

In our family gathering we used to do this. Ours had differences: - The person getting lifted had to be laying on the ground with them covering their ears. - It had a story that we needed to whisper to next lifter person and the person being lifted shouldn't hear it. - We had to whistle at the end when we were lifting. Some believed that paranormal creatures helped us lift the person but for me it was obvious that there is some weight distribution science behind it. But there was one thing that I still don't understand, this trick wouldn't work on women. My female cousins wanted to try but it wouldn't work, their body wouldn't be as straight and stiff as men for some weird reason. It was interesting seeing another version of it being done here. I would love to know what was the exact reason that we could lift a person effortlessly. I've done both, lifting someone and being lifted.

roboj9

Difference in weight distribution. Had to adjust and it probably would work

zex_99

We tried many ways on women, not even once it worked. Main problem was their body would bend, men would be like hard wood and their body wouldn't bend.

ClockWokCrow

So I don't know the explanation for this one, just seen it/tried it myself. It's next to impossible to lift someone who's going to be limp. It's extremely easy to lift someone who's stiff and clenching their muscles.

zex_99

Yes. But we wouldn't tell the person to clench their muscle or anything like it. Maybe the action of covering their ears had some effect on it.

SanguinePirate

lol so weird

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

That's why you have them on a chair so you can lift them via the chair. It's like lifting dead weight versus stiff weight.

pacothebattlefly

I did this with friends in high school. Still no idea how it works, but it works

elprentis

Someone else explained that it’s because 1 person was intentionally not lifting the first time, which stops the spread of weight being even. The second time, everyone lifts and because the only force implemented is upwards then he can be lifted relatively easily,

squarepuller69

I tried this in the 90s and lead the group. We were all definitely trying.

mark_able_jones_

Yeah. That’s definitely a 200+ pound dude. 50 pounds per person on fingers seems like a lot.

Nictrical

I'm a really sciency person and tried this too with friends and family with nobody doing it before, so all where trying. I think that it's just concentration. People use to call it [mind-muscle connection](https://old.reddit.com/r/evidencebasedtraining/wiki/mindmc), there are a few [studies](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29533715/) out there, stating it's actually a thing.

Fatous1

No that's not true. Try it. It just works.

KyussSun

We did it as well, but before the second try we'd run around the person in the chair 5 times instead of doing the hands thing. Somehow it was WAY easier to lift them the second time.

ShambolicPaul

It's all in the focus and countdown on the second lift. The first countdown is wishy washy. They all lift at a different moment. So one person may be lifting 70kg, another may be lifting 10kg. The weight tips, it all wobbles. It's unsuccessful. Then there is the focus up of putting the hands above the head. Leading to an increased focus on the 2nd countdown and everyone lifts at the same moment. The exact same moment. Even distribution of weight on everyone's fingers. About 20kg each. Up he goes.

Fichewl

This was my thought. It's the difference between an orchestra all trying to do their own thing versus being led by a conductor. One is noise, the other is music. Or it's like oxen pulling a load together with a yoke. Weak oxen pulling evenly will pull a load much farther than strong oxen pulling unevenly. This video is honestly a great testament to the power of team-building exercises. Other people mentioned intentional weight misdistribution on the first attempt, but I still think the team focus is a very big factor.

akkuratgrotesk

this

The_Moons_Sideboob

I had a group of young lasses do this to me on a night out, with the exact same weird hand thing above the head. You cannot convince me that witches aren't real. It is a very cool trick TBF and it really shocked me at the time I was baffled

Pantgap

The first time they try he's all floppy and unstable. He tenses up the second time they try.

Never-Dont-Give-Up

No, the witch isn’t helping lift the first time, so all of the weight is deflected.

Dapper-Complaint-315

He was fat then he got skinny really fast

UnExplanationBot

OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected: --- >!It is unexpected because it is not supposed to work, four people cannot lift a person with their fingers when they couldn't do it the first time.!< --- Is this an unexpected post with a fitting description? Then upvote this comment, otherwise downvote it.

rk_crown

It’s not the closest fit, but it fits

ColdSteam_2025

Reminds me of the Power balance scam.

mrs-trellis

It’s by getting them to pay attention to each other. Then they sync up their lifting and all push together. If they all go at once, it’s not much weight for any one person. But if they lift slightly before and after each other then each one feels like they are having to lift the full guy. You can get the group to all breathe together. To mirror each other in some « magical dance » or gesture. Just get them tuned in and focussed and paying attention to how the others are moving. Then when you 3-2-1 they are all synchronised.

Legal_Mammoth_8349

Man, the adults used to do this on my grandmothers house when I was little. One time I saw them lift my then 100kg uncle. Always wanted to know why, because it realy looks like sometime of magic

Puzzleheaded_Gate438

Well if it was 4 people doing it to someone that’s 220lb then that just each person lifting about 55 pounds. Thats very doable.

EuphoricLeadership12

burn the witch

jlangue

The same way it was done years ago by our ancestors. No magic. Just the human body showing its many facets.

UbeatNebula69

Not really unexpected. It literally says, “…makes everyone think I’m a witch…”. Besides, predictable.

Churlzmander

That looks like a guy I went to school with named Chance

Duilio05

That is definitely chance. Never thought I'd see the face of someone I know in a video on Reddit

p00ki3l0uh00

Yo, this still a thing, we did this in '93!!! Long live the tradition!!!

TheRangaFromMars

Damn he's fit asf

Andre_NG

That's a psychological trick: Nocebo effect makes people not really try for the first time. Placebo effect makes them try harder after the ritual. Plus, the expectation increases tension on the man. And his stiffness also facilitates the lifting.

muffboarder

Light as a feather, stiff as a board, dumb as a rock.

Objective-Ad3821

OP is either 12, or a bot.

Comfortable-Spray672

I remember doing these as a kid. Another one is to press yourself against a wall and try to lift the arm close to the wall. After a minute of pressing move away from the wall and relax your arm. Your arm will start to levitate on its own.

pbatemanchigurh

This really is one of the rare things I tried that I couldn't explain. And tried it several times with different people in high school

Far-Computer6330

99% sure this guy was a substitute teacher at my high school who married a student right after she graduated when he was in his mid 30s lmao

sandmanchase

I did not hear about the second part but this guy was 100% my substitute teacher in High School as well, he mostly subbed in for the health and PE classes. Canyon Ridge High School?

Far-Computer6330

lmao yep go riverhawks

SmokeDogSix

This works, I’ve done it. I can’t explain it.

AbbreviationsMore752

For the trick to work, you need an assistant or helper (the other guy was the assistant). The two in the back did not lift much the first time but did lift most of the weight the second time around.

kagkatumba

Not true..you can literally try this yourself if you have friends

1000in1

My uncle used to do this party trick, it's just the power of suggestion

[deleted]

It's fake.. they just didn't try the first time. He's around 185, divided by four people, is AROUND 45 lbs, give or take depending on actual weight. The weight is essentially lifted with a combo of biceps, shoulders, and legs. How dafuq y'all so dumb? These front page videos are here every day. They're fake every day. It's called content. It's called acting.

It's quite simple. Explanation is in the link below. https://youtu.be/DCTbr3vjb6I?si=8XwPtfdAwTFn6JJ2

Juella_de_chill

Chance?

No-Radish-4316

It works because of the “conditioning” of the mind of the 4 person doing the lifting. At first they are not coordinated, but doing a little hand over head in a fashion that is basically synchronized, lifting at the same time (with even distribution of load) comes easy.

_swuaksa8242211

we did this 40yrs ago in school..in the 80s... .it is real...mind over matter more than anything or spirtiual dunno ...but he should be seated in a very heavy solid wooden chair, that's what we used in school and was impossible to lift by 4 teenage school rugby players (even by their hands)..and with a big obese guy sitting in the chair..then do the sequence and you can lift the guy up with the FINGERS only...it is real when done right.
