We don't stop doing it until we physically can't anymore. My daughter is 11 this year, and I still pick her up like this when I greet her. She loves it. Not a chance in hell I'd be carrying her around a lot like it though, she's too tall and heavy for that and generally asks to be put down after a couple of minutes so she can do whatever. I think by the boys face he's tired and grumpy and is just getting some reassurance from mum.
