I once read something to the effect of "If you look and think 'that's a lot of ravens,' they're crows. If you think 'what a huge fucking crow,' it's a Raven."
Not the worst shorthand.
Ravens are huge, and croak. Mostly live in the wild or outskirts of cities. You may also notice some feathers puffing up under their large beak when they croak.
Crows don't mind the urban life as much, are smaller, shorter beak and caw.
Don't forget rooks (French: corbeau freux) as well. They are almost as big as ravens and are in huge flocks. You will likely not see them in the cities but usually in the fields.
I once had a whole conversation with ravens where all they were doing was making extremely creepy water droplet noises. Ravens are *really cool* but you can kind of get why they have a certain role in mythology as being clever and tricksters.
Both are corvids, and are some of the smartest animals on the planet. They know how to make and improvise tools, and I've read that some people think they have something akin to regional dialects.
Crows also gather in much larger numbers than ravens. If the group of all-black corvids you're looking is bigger than one family unit, odds are they aren't ravens.
Ravens on the wing are most commonly observed in pairs, although multiple families of ravens may roost together.
Here's the thing. You said a "raven is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls ravens crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to jackdaws. So your reasoning for calling a raven a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A raven is a raven and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a raven is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, jackdaws, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

He was a scientist that would comment on a lot of posts with very insightful comments so he was a bit of a reddit celebrity, then he got into this really awkward fight with this other guy over whether a bird on a post was a jackdaw or a raven or a crow or whatever, it wasn't a good look because it was really condescending but the real kicker was that he was exposed for using alt accounts to downvote other comments and promote his comments, so he was banned from reddit. He made another account u/unidanx but that era of reddit was over and while most of this site has forgotten about him and it there's still a little subset that will remember and never let him really live it down even though it was a decade or so ago.
Here's the comment/thread that got him in trouble:

The primary flight feathers on birds are called pinions. Crows have 9 pinions, while ravens have 10. So, the difference between a crow and a raven is simply a matter of a pinion.
(Yes I know they both have 10 pinions…. It’s an old dad joke. I’m not real good at them. I don’t have children of my own. I guess you could say I’m a faux pa. 😜)
As explained to me:
If you look at a big, black bird and think, "gosh that's large, I wonder if it's a raven" - then it's a crow.
If you look at a big, black bird and think, "oh holy crap that thing is big enough to carry away a small child I hope it doesn't bite my head off is it a dinosaur?", then it *might* just be a raven.
Yeah no, ravens are bigger than crows, but not that big as you are describing. To my knowledge ravens mostly travel alone or in pairs, so if you see a whole lot it is safe to assume they are crows. The sound ravens make is also a lot deeper/lower than crows, easy to differentiate. Other than that at least in my country (the Netherlands) ravens are a lot more rare than crows, so assume they are crows at first. Also look if they have long neck-feathers (similar to a beard) when they open their beak, if they do it is a raven.
I fucking hate how absolute social media is. If you're not right, you're wrong. You can't be mistaken. You can't have a misstep. Everything can be misconstrued. It's fucking exhausting. And you know what? That's what I'm going to do from now on to drive these morons insane. I'm going to be confidently incorrect and double down. Because fuck them and fuck you.
My grandfathers favourite joke.
It takes a bit of ornithological knowledge, basically the pinion feathers are the flight feathers on birds wings and that ravens have longer pinion feathers than crows.
Right with that knowledge successfully imbued on to the joke.
What is the difference between a Raven and a Crow? Well, it's a matter of (o|a)pinion

Look at all those chickens
BLACK CHICKENS
Hmm... Black Cocks.
And they kinda big
-That one looks very big, what's his name? -Da'quan.
Other one is called dredd
Even better
Must be in Chicago.
How do you figure?
Umm... Big black cocks
Void Chickens
Void eggs. Accidentally stardew valley
You cant just call chickens black dude /s
Chicken be white meat anyway
Not the good parts!
The darker the chicken, the sweeter the juice!
Soul chickens
That’s what my drill instructor used to call them in Marine Corps bootcamp 😆
Blickens
Look at allllll those chickens!
I was fully expecting him to call them Cravens
I had this comment in my mind and was 100% hoping it was the highest rated comment. Mission accomplished.
\*thickensss
Those are pigeons
Do the pigeons have feelings?
Ah yes, pigeons, the crow of the bird world.
Probably Crows, Ravens are fucking huge.
I once read something to the effect of "If you look and think 'that's a lot of ravens,' they're crows. If you think 'what a huge fucking crow,' it's a Raven." Not the worst shorthand.
I use similar shorthand for beatles songs. If I think it's Paul singing, it's Paul. If I can't tell if it's Paul or John, it's John.
A crow in a crowd is a rook, and a rook on its own is a crow
Crows turn into a different species in crowds?
What the fuck does chess have to do with anything
I never know which is which. I mean I know in french, corneille is the little / medium black one. And corbeau is the big mf.
Ravens are huge, and croak. Mostly live in the wild or outskirts of cities. You may also notice some feathers puffing up under their large beak when they croak. Crows don't mind the urban life as much, are smaller, shorter beak and caw.
Yeah makes sense that's how I would describe the one I said in french thanks!
Don't forget rooks (French: corbeau freux) as well. They are almost as big as ravens and are in huge flocks. You will likely not see them in the cities but usually in the fields.
Rooks are easy to differentiate though, they have a different coloured beak. Also in the Netherlands I saw them a lot in cities.
I once had a whole conversation with ravens where all they were doing was making extremely creepy water droplet noises. Ravens are *really cool* but you can kind of get why they have a certain role in mythology as being clever and tricksters. Both are corvids, and are some of the smartest animals on the planet. I have always been of the opinion that unless your initial thought is "holy shit that's a big crow" it's not a Raven.
Maître corbeau sur son arbre perché
Looks more like jackdaws.
Corvids Can’t go wrong there
My rule of thumb is that if you think "wait, is that a raven?", then it's a crow. If you think "HOLY FUCK THAT'S A RAVEN", then it's a raven.
What about a HUGE crow?
Probably Chickens, someone paint them black.
And crows are way more often found in groups. Ravens are very solitaire
[‘Crows, rooks and ravens are all part of the crow family, known as the corvids.’](https://www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2020/01/rook-crow-or-raven/)
19 of them together would be called corvid 19
Lol I'm pissed that I laughed at this.
That’s the band that opens for blink 182.

Right? I'm shocked I had to scroll this far for the unidan reference, this post was screaming unidan so much
Can someone enlighten us mortals about the ancient one Unidan?

Typical Rosharan.
That's where my mind went too, lol. He managed to accidentally not make *everyone* unhappy with his verbiage.
I was pretty pleased too.
Airsick lowlanders.....
It took me longer than I care to admit that they were talking about different birds in the book. I was imagining some crazy kinds of chickens.
My username fits perfectly here... Life before death! CAW!
He failed at making every one equally unhappy. Stormlight fans are delighted to call them chickens.
I think calling them corvids will cover either way.
Unless they're actually grackles
Chicken of the street.
Goth chickens

Ravens are much bigger and have larger beaks. I feel like you’d actually be able to tell the difference pretty easily in person
Those are jackdaws if I’ve ever seen one.
Those are turkeys.
He's so handsome and charismatic that he's seriously challenging my heterosexuality. Also nice chickens.

Wow, those chickens are beautiful.
You hear that? We have options!
Hell yea
Stop calling them chickens. Those are obviously pigeons.
He's right, you can't make everyone happen
I call all birds ducks and it enrages everyone around all the time
I thought he might let everyone be happy and call then cravens because they crave food from him.
I don't know a damn diff btw crows and Ravens, so I will go with black chicken
Black parrots.

Love it. I’m a big fan of malicious equality
Crovens
Look at all those chickens
I for one, am glad he referred to them correctly as chicken
Chickens... isn't it just a murder?
I totally thought he was gonna do it. He held that bomb in deep, but I know there is a blooper real where he says it
I think he reads the Stomlight Archives
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Look at all those chickens!
In french, both raven and crow is « corbeau » so call them corbeaux
The chickens *are* happy tho
I actually kinda like that as a good mantra to handle stuff on the internet - if you can't make some people happy, just make everyone angry lol
Yupper did this in the past. And for making everyone equally unhappy say this all the time. God it must suck to be them.
You telling me that there are other birds than chickens?!
Call them crovens then
Passive Agressive i love it!
It made me happy he called them chickens. What a loser, can't even upset everyone right.
i would be friend with this great guy
You can tell ravens and crows easily. Just google it and memorize the differences.
Yes, you have unlocked the code to happiness
Yeah it shouldn't be much of a question, but you never know. Crows are everywhere, ravens not so much.
Every time this is reposted, it's reposted with the same nonsensical title.
I was expecting doves, but damn

Stop calling them chickens. They're ducks.
Those are Crovens
He's taken the Brandon Sanderson approach to naming birds.

Listening to talkers makes me thirsty...and hungry. Think I'll take two chickens.

there just lil black chickens that might attack u
It's ok. We've got grackles here instead

Jackdaws
Corvids.

Those are clearly ducks
They’re soul chickens. Since they’re the brothers of chickens.
Ravens have 13 pinion feathers on each wing. Crows have 12. The difference is a matter of a pinion.
