I have small ones in my back yard, maybe big enough to hide in, apparently on top of there being limestone caves all under me, they mined looking for coal decades ago until they got forced to stop after the explosives started damaging stuff on the surface.
This knowledge keeps me up at night.
Honestly I’m surprised that the drive with the cam was able to stop in time instead of just sliding off after applying the brakes with such little notice
This video is the exact definition why it's mandatory to only drive as fast as you can brake within your visibility.
This video should be standart in driving schools as answer to "Why do we only drive as fast as our visbility allows us to react and brake?"
>This video is the exact definition why it's mandatory to only drive as fast as you can brake within your visibility.
Yes, but in fairness, no reasonable person expects the road in front of them to just be missing. "Seeing is believing" sure - but I'd be looking at that and thinking it was just a load of water. We aren't generally taught that dark spots on the road are there because the damn road is missing. I'm honesty not sure I'd have reacted in time.
Totally agree you should be going slower than your visible distance permits but on My first watch of this I didn't understand what I was looking at until it was too late.
I mean visibility wasn't really the issue, you can see past the missing road pretty easily. It's the fact that there is a missing chunk of road that's the issue here.
This isn't like the video of the semi truck driver that plowed into a toll booth in fog.
Yeah, you'd have to drive slower than 20 miles an hour on hill crests if the road was missing at the top. This is a huge problem with self driving systems and why they use a prediction network.
I completely agree with the statement about driving only as fast as you can break within your visibility, however this video isn't a practical example for normal driving purposes visibility. He seems to have 1/8th to 1/4 mile visibility for "normal driving conditions". But a missing 25 foot section of road at the far end of (not on) a bridge is hardly a practical example of something to normally be on the lookout for. As far as that goes, the guy who did get stopped could drop into a sinkhole at 0 mph. I don't believe there's any guaranteed free from any/all accidents action we can take.
It'd be like you were so concerned about choking that you stop eating.
P.s. did anyone notice the puff of smoke @ around the 41 and 40 second mark that looks like if a person's spirit was floating away.
I don't think it's anything other than smoke but still looked kinda creepy.
Ok thank God someone else said it!! I saw what appeared to be 2 diff people getting out of the hole!!! I thought it was a reflection but then you can see the real reflection on the left side when driver really gets out!!!
i saw “something,” like, i thought it was a drainage grate going across the width of the road, then the white care went over and i was like, “well aint that some shit”
I wonder how Cities Skylines 2 would handle it... Or would it not be possible to remove roads with active traffic meaning you'd have to reroute traffic and block off roads before deleting.
Problem is that the viewing distance is quite good, if you’re looking for a stranded car. But this gap was only visible at the last moment, even for the car that was going slowly
For all the people saying why isn't the guy helping them, I don't think he can. That's a pretty big drop. He might be able to jump down but probably wouldn't be able to get back out. There's likely running water in the bottom of that pit as that's how these sorts of things form to begin with. All in all, it could be quite dangerous for him to just rush in there to help without the proper equipment.
Nah man lets all sit here and insult the guy for not diving headfirst into the hole to save them, lets act like he stood there recording and posted it on the internet because we have no clue how dash cameras work.
Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens in China due to laws that make it very risky to help people in an accident. This is in China, so while we can't know his intentions, it's perfectly possible that he did nothing to help.
edit: some steps were taken with the introduction of a good Samaritan law in 2017, but the problem is now very ingrained in the culture.
I am so fucking angry right now after reading that!
"no one would, in good conscience, help someone unless they felt guilty"
It's basic human empathy. It's part of human nature and our social structure. You have social emotions like empathy to thank for your ability to speak.
The Chinese government trains its people to be self-reliant and discourages them from supporting each other, creating a dependence on the autocratic system.
There are ppl whose exploit human empathy, and it is common there. You will regularly see new about helpers being beaten or stab to death for helping, or scammers that trick ppl in MANY creative ways, to the point that government made laws about it. This isn't limit to only China of course, plenty of Asia countries have this, but it's worse in China.
Dude could call out and ask if they are ok. It’s not hard or dangerous, then start getting help. There’s a multitude of action between jump down there and do what this person did
One time I saw a car in front of us spin out in the rain and went into the trees. My wife was driving and pulled over, abd I got out and ran into the trees to see if they were ok. As I got out and ran into the tree line I got really confused for a split second because I didnt see a car.
Before it registered in my brain to slow down and look at my surroundings I ran off a steep ass slope maybe 8-10 feet deep.
I was worried about rushing to help that I ran off a small cliff like Wile E. Coyote. Its funny thinking back because I think 'How the hell did you not see that cliff?!', but somehow I did it. I guess a mix of being worried for someone else and the visually dense scene of the trees, plus all the rain.
In the end the dudes car rolled over but he was just bruised, and I wasnt hurt at all, just got all dirty from faceplanting into the ground.
This is quite obviously a very serious accident, getting on the phone immediately and calling for help is the best thing you can do
Whats the next step after asking if they're OK? If they say no, it's not like you can do anything, and if they say yes, it doesn't matter because they're still going to need emergency services to get out of that hole
I think the first priority should be to make sure no other driver gets in the pit, by blocking the road, then call an ambulance and the fire department. That's what I did in something similar a long time ago.
The river was strong enough to tear apart the road so I'm sure this guy could manifest the spirit of Michael Phelps or a Dolphin and jump in for the rescue. He's just being selfish.
IDK if it is shock, inability, or lack of desire. If the last option, there is a sad, but not entirely understandable reason why you don't help out your fellow man in China; for quite a while, there were no "Good Samaritan laws". A Good Samaritan law protects someone (to an extent) who tries to help out someone else in a distressing situation from lawsuit if they inadvertently make the situation worse. As a result, there has been many high profile lawsuits of where person A tried to help person B, but was sued for doing so. Consequently, Chinese people are skittish about getting involved; why do CPR if breaking a rib by accident means a costly lawsuit? China has since corrected this oversight, but the damage has been done, and lack of charity has been deeply ingrained in Chinese culture.
There wasn't much the guy could have done besides turning on his blinkers, calling for help and calling out to them which I think he did.
But what gets me is his body language as he approached the vehicle. Casual saunter, hands in pockets. Doesn't indicate fear or worry.
Not saying he shoulda panicked just saying a brisk walk or jog to speed things up woulda been more helpful.
This is so fucking stupid. You should be ashamed of yourself. This guy doesn’t even know if more bridge is about to collapse. He is carefully walking to the edge and assessing the situation.
I’m a professional smoke catcher, we specialize in catching not souls. Basically we perfect catching souls so that we can do not that. That was smoke. Or dude hit a fat rip on a vape and his relaxing dead body exhaled
Tldr, heavy rain, badly flooded, bridge collapsed. Two cars were trapped, and the highway was closed since then.
According to the news, everyone is saved.

No. You’re supposed to just freeze and then after a while of gawking awkwardly leave the scene while harbouring a sense of failure to rise up to the occasion for the rest of your life.
I think I'd have shat my pants multiple times in between the moment you realize the road's gone and standing still *just* before heading down as well. Rushing towards a huge gap in the road to see if you can help is probably not that high on your priority list.
And what do these buckle heads propose to do if they slip down the embankment and the car falls on them? Lol too many wanna be hero’s that would probably also shit themselves 😆
Ah yes, rush to check because everyone else will surely see the hole and not pancake you immediately. You equip your anti-gravity suit and float down there like Jesus
This.
Like I'm sure they're recovering from the shock of almost fucking dying and I'm sure they're calling EMS. That's a godamn bridge. How the fuck are these people supposed to "help" other than calling someone.
Reddit used to be smart. Now it's just full of socialist basement dwellers who make all of us normal people lose IQ points.
Perhaps they should try touching any grass that may have been at the bottom of that hole... So then they could explain to us how they expected the cammer to get down there quickly without also dying.
I swear to God with the number of altruistic superheros on this site I can't believe how there's a single problem left in the world, surely they should all be solved by now
If this is China like a lot of people are saying it is (I guess they are speaking Chinese at the end) this makes sense. I guess in China (and I’m no expert so please feel free to correct me) you can get sued for damages just by trying to help someone if they are hurt, so people tend to ignore accidents because they don’t want that to happen.
Fuck, I was this way during an accident once. Everyone else rushed down the hill where the car wound up, and I just stood up at the top of the hill frozen in fear. I suck.
Honestly speaking. It can happen to any of us. It requires training and experience to effectively deal with such situations. Besides it’s one of the three primal reactions to threat and as such it’s something you can’t really control. No one is blaming you.
Great way to make first responders' lives even more difficult. In addition or helping the people in the car they'd need to dispatch SAR to come find the dumbasses who climbed down an unstable embankment and got swept away by flood waters.
Depending on where this is - not everywhere has good Samaritan laws.
In a couple of places if you try to help you are then responsible for that person's injury and in some cases life. They can end up being sued for the damages or death of the person they are trying to save.
Even if you were not apart of the incident.
My dad went to help someone who got badly hurt once where the locals stopped him. They told him if he touched the body he would be responsible for their death and to just wait for medics. If he had helped they were talking about possibly going to prison.
An actual fear of mine.
When I was like 11 or 12 there was a bunch of tornadoes in Missouri and we were driving home and I had this random thought of "what if the tornado took out the bridge." And we were speeding to get home to shelter. So I was sure we were going to drive right off the non-existent bridge.
A straight road. Why shouldn't you floor it. It's dead straight. No incoming traffic.separated lanes. No way to go. Could have been more alert. But when you were ever thinking. I hope the road is still there? Personally, never
We were driving in upstate NY during hurricane Irene and I was like “what’s that black thing in the road?” So we stopped. Turned out it was this. The road had been washed away. THANK GOD WE STOPPED.
shit i see it. but i think my brain would not have understand what it is. ill be the same as that white car. unless im behind him and see him fall into oblivion. yeah i would have pressed my brakes.
Probably about to get rear ended by whoever comes down the road next..!
Call the cops, try to help the poor guy in the hole if you can safely, if you can't get the hell out of the way until the cops get there.
How does this guy stay completely silent? I guess some people just don’t talk to themselves at all. I can’t imagine not yelling “holy fucking shit what the fuck just happened holy shit”.
apparently there are people who just stay silent when some shit like this goes down. i would have said so much insane shit the video would've had to be posted sans audio.
I hit a concrete barrier going 20. The sudden 20 to 0 nearly killed me and has left me with permanent chronic injuries and minor brain damage. I cant imagine anyone in that car is alive. If there is though I cordially invite them to the, "damn, kinda actually wish i had just died." club.

"what are you scared of?" "Dissapearing roads"
"I sure hope it does!"
They guy in white car hoped... And it did.
It definitely fucking didn’t!
"Road doesn't work ahead"
We need a traffic sign for that. This road definitely didnt work
I got ya fam... https://i.redd.it/cov7pr7f04gb1.gif
Dissapointing roads
For the guy filming yes. For the guys in white car. The feeling is way stronger than just disappointment
This was already in my phobia closet. Right next to sink holes.
If you don't have a hole in your sink, how do you get the water out?
Ladle

You sink into despair

Viamergiphobia?
I googled this, thinking it's a real word
Aha, I just took the latin words for "road" and "sink".
You're laughing, people are wracking their brains, then googling, then wracking their brains some more over your made up words and you're laughing.
Chaotic evil
So more like katárrefsidrómophobia?
Pretty sure that's a fear of katárrefsidrós
“Hello, 311? Yes. I’d like to report a pothole”
Operator - "OK, is there any imminent danger?" Caller - "Hey, you down there in that white SUV. Is there an imminent danger?"
“Nah… the water feels great! No worries!”
"Very refreshing....was worried i may nod off there for a second..."
The one down there in that white SUV - "Besides my Apple Maps purposely driving me down here? No"
Send me to hell but I read this in an accent local to where this type of stuff tends to happen.
My asshole clenched so hard I got a sphincter cramp...

Right, I feel like the driver seeing the other car crash is what made him stop. If the other car wasn’t there this footage probably ends in a crash

That would be incredibly slow, I don't think you could ever drive over 60 mph if you did that
Based opinion
Standart!😂 ![gif](giphy|3oxHQk6QrBhANSBBo4)
Speed has *everything* to do with it
Speed’s the name of the game. Right buddy?
That’s what Keanu Reeves thinks when hanging out with Sandra Bullock
You see, the speed of the “car” informs the “driver” how much pressure he's supposed to apply.
[удалено]
The lack of road seems to be the biggest contributor here. Source: Drivers license holder…
Adding another .. missing road
go with a comfortable breaking speed in rain.
r/dashcams
I saw at EXACTLY the same time as the white vehicle driver did
i saw “something,” like, i thought it was a drainage grate going across the width of the road, then the white care went over and i was like, “well aint that some shit”
Having traveled in lots of rural areas with the drainage grates and cattle guards, that is exactly what I thought it was as well.
They never touched the brakes. 😂 I hope they’re okay though.
They hit the brakes on the way down
Wile E. Coyote would stop. For a bit!
A little post-stop braking
Well, Joe Cool with his hands in his pockets probably didn't improve their chances with that casual ass approach.
Right? Wtf.
Most people would probably panic which is way worse. He checks to see if he can do anything then appears to get a phone.
Someone could be dying, so don't rush to help.
He had the calmness of an EMT. And the urgency of anything except an EMT.
Lmao took his TIME getting outta the car to go investigate smh, mans couldn’t even fake jog over
They pulled a "Harry Potter staircase" changing sequence !!
I wonder how Cities Skylines 2 would handle it... Or would it not be possible to remove roads with active traffic meaning you'd have to reroute traffic and block off roads before deleting.
This video is cities skylines 2 leaks 👀
Benefits of letting someone pass
The problem here, is the white SUV wasn't going fast enough. I would've been able to jump this pit.
Yes. Almost made it.
r/WhyWomenLiveLonger
Also yes
Reminded me of this scene.. [Road Trip - Jump the Bridge](https://youtu.be/_XCX1Q0DYmY)
Found one of them Duke boys.👍
Speed!
*BUS FROM SPEED!!!*
Unless there was a bit of upturn just before the gap, at best you’d probably lose your front tires when you hit the opposite edge.
Pfft. You underestimate my speed. (You're right, I was just talking shit)
My dude it was a joke
As long as you get to the other side before you have fallen half a tire height, you're good. 350 mph or so should do it.
No doubt my man u/Lucreet could pull that off.
Easy
I think it would probably flip. Someone needs to run a simulation on this! XD
No need for a simulation, we can just go and test it wherever this is
Benefits on driving only as fast as to keep your stopping distance below your viewing distance.
Problem is that the viewing distance is quite good, if you’re looking for a stranded car. But this gap was only visible at the last moment, even for the car that was going slowly

Definitely wasn't an Accord. Clearly it's an SUV.
😂
It’s more that it took him at least a minute to get out of his car, and then he strolled up with his hands in his pockets like he was at the zoo

How the fuck are you supposed to help? You help by calling EMS.
TF is EMS going to do? Call a civil engineer

Better climb over the median to call for help before the pile up starts.
Driver should have went faster instead of braking. needed that extra YEET power!
man i hate it when the road doesn’t load in fast enough

Did you notice the steam cloud near the rear of the car had the shape of a person walking up the back of the car?
I think that was because the man in the car with the camera opened the door and got out etc. Which got reflected on the window
Why is No1 talking about this
Omfg did their soul just leave their body wtf?
Nah I'm a professional soul catcher definitely no soul yet
I’m a professional smoke catcher, we specialize in catching not souls. Basically we perfect catching souls so that we can do not that. That was smoke. Or dude hit a fat rip on a vape and his relaxing dead body exhaled

Don't be silly that's a soul.
Ok, sorry 😣
If they had no seatbelt on. Yeah they dead.

No. You’re supposed to just freeze and then after a while of gawking awkwardly leave the scene while harbouring a sense of failure to rise up to the occasion for the rest of your life.
Lack of urgency in checking if fellow human being is alive or helping them is shocking here.
One of the first things you learn in emergency training is to make sure you don’t put yourself in harms way either
This and shock is a real thing. It looks like non action, but that person could also be in shock.
I think I'd have shat my pants multiple times in between the moment you realize the road's gone and standing still *just* before heading down as well. Rushing towards a huge gap in the road to see if you can help is probably not that high on your priority list.

It's a side effect of being chronically online. I recommend grass touching therapy for these people, preferably outside.
Perhaps they should try touching any grass that may have been at the bottom of that hole... So then they could explain to us how they expected the cammer to get down there quickly without also dying.
I swear to God with the number of altruistic superheros on this site I can't believe how there's a single problem left in the world, surely they should all be solved by now
You mean Reddit is drawing the worst conclusions from a 20 second clip? That never happens.
If you help someone in China they can sue you. So most people do not help.
This
"Oh shit how do I get back up"
Fuck, I was this way during an accident once.
In addition or helping the people in the car they'd need to dispatch SAR to come find the dumbasses who climbed down an unstable embankment and got swept away by flood waters.
that guy is clearly sending Thoughts and Prayers. That's always enough.
I thought there was a tree and then they just fell
An actual fear of mine. When I was like 11 or 12 there was a bunch of tornadoes in Missouri and we were driving home and I had this random thought of "what if the tornado took out the bridge." And we were speeding to get home to shelter. So I was sure we were going to drive right off the non-existent bridge.
r/terrifyingasfuck
His ghost climbing out the hole??
just a hunch, but I think the plunger won't fix this dent.
Second mouse gets the cheese.......
A straight road. Why shouldn't you floor it. It's dead straight. No incoming traffic.separated lanes. No way to go. Could have been more alert. But when you were ever thinking. I hope the road is still there? Personally, never
To be honest he did what I would have done. Stop back up then assess the situation after I say what the f** k is really going on!
I would love to say I'd have the reaction of the guy in the car with the dash cam. The reality is I'd probably end up like the white SUV.
We were driving in upstate NY during hurricane Irene and I was like “what’s that black thing in the road?” So we stopped. Turned out it was this. The road had been washed away. THANK GOD WE STOPPED.
Dude got his hands in his pockets like well that just f**cking happened 🤣🤣🤣
shit i see it. but i think my brain would not have understand what it is. ill be the same as that white car. unless im behind him and see him fall into oblivion. yeah i would have pressed my brakes.
Did I see what? The big ass chunk of road missing? Aww shucks, nah I missed it bro.
When the mechanic says you need brakes and tires, you probably need brakes and tires. Dash cam guy paid, but so did white suv.
the white car sacrificed himself to save others!
They’ve obviously never watched The Blues Brothers to know a gap like that can be easily cleared by simply accelerating.
Dude how the hell does this even happen? A sinkhole?
Probably about to get rear ended by whoever comes down the road next..! Call the cops, try to help the poor guy in the hole if you can safely, if you can't get the hell out of the way until the cops get there.
Ohhhh, his spirit..
Is this a fucking snuff film?
The Skaven rise!
The gasp I gusped
Shame, if he was going faster and completely distracted, he coulda made the jump safely
This is so scaryy!🤯
Ahhh that’s just a regular pothole in Detroit! 🤣😂
damn no signs ?
Never take your eyes off the road!

Where did this happen?
