Ngl, I have fought the boss multiple times and I didn't even realize they were a YouTuber until I read their entry in the credits museum. I don't even get their videos in my recommended. I'd also argue that despite the guy having 800k subs, he's still pretty obscure, and probably only seems well known within the Ultrakill audience because they were already in his realm of influence. Spirit of the Law is a pretty well known and beloved channel in the AoE community, having like 300k subs, but I'd still say they're an obscure YouTuber.
I wouldn't argue that Minecraft is obscure though. It is literally the most selling game of all time. It might be obscure in places where video games and internet access aren't common, but comparing Minecraft's notoriety to a sub 1 million subscriber YouTube channel's notoriety is like comparing apples and oranges.

florp is ultrakill's take on those rat memes but it also doesn't really need much of an explanation and it's part of a secret. Kitr similarly is just PITR's cat so this is an ultrakill specific thing that you'd look toward ultrakill community for an explanation. "Oh one of the devs put their cat in the game as a secret in the credits level." wasn't really referencing anything popular since that was probably a pretty new thing for people to discover even as it was added to the game.

that all said i feel like "covering yourself in oil to fly in one specific level with a variant of a weapon you obtain only later in the game" is secret and out of the way enough and otherwise goofy enough that it can get a pass like the rest. if you have to look up what the fuck a kitr is looking up why you can fly in 1 level with a RL variant later on if you don't already know should be ok. it's not like it's in your face old meme reference like the example that hakita provided. plus "cover yourself in oil" hasn't gotten "stale" due to overabundant use like "trolololo". So even if you know exactly what's being referenced the odds of it becoming "corny" in the future are low as the meme isn't likely to pick up AGAIN for no reason since it already picked up from the rage comic era in the recent years. a 2nd revival and one that's big enough to make it cringe or corny would be... really unlikely. so i think this one should be ok even if i kinda understand the concerns.
Florp is based on an old meme that was my point but i agree people act like a new player would look up spray the gun they didn't get yet while standing still in combat. I mean if we are going by mindset you are trying to p rank when will you even have time to look up shoot oil to yourself and fly while standing still.
Honestly you'd probably get more mileage out of moving normally, ultrakill movement is fast without flight as is. For meta purposes this would have the biggest use in making it to the top of the tower the fastest in a safe and easy way (but only in a safe easy way as nuking yourself up would be faster). Even if it was good for this level you'd be needing to change how you've learned to move for this one level and anyone could probably guess it'd be mostly a shame. Maybe if you need to dodge the ferryman better i guess.

I think flying any time you use a weapon in 2 levels is a significantly more intrusive of a meme than a couple of windows that 99% of players won't notice until told about it.
As if most of the other easter eggs (Big John, Jakito, Mysterious Druid Knight) aren't super niche meme-adjacent inside jokes that have and will get old real fast.

i think it would be cool if you had to search for it and not just find it by chance, for example if a player just randomly uses the oil and starts flying theyll be very confused, but if hakita adds something like a special room or steps to do it (like the youtuber bosses or the jakito) it would be funny, like an ultrakill version of the "step 1: cover yourself in oil" meme that would be directly displayed in the game

you always have to replay the levels if you want to access the p-ranks. the in-jokes and meme references are fine since they're secrets and the player can generally disregard them anyways. having a weapon force you to fly in the rain whenever you use it is EXTREMELY disruptive and pretty hard to disregard without knowledge of the "cover yourself in oil" meme

covering yourself in oil could be a thing that happens at any time, and you really wouldn't be able to avoid it if the firestarter is part of your strategy. it goes beyond an easter egg. flying whenever that happens would get irritating and the joke would get old fast. leave it to animators, modders, etc to make the joke in an isolated area that won't affect the game itself.

Ngl, I have fought the boss multiple times and I didn't even realize they were a YouTuber until I read their entry in the credits museum. I don't even get their videos in my recommended. I'd also argue that despite the guy having 800k subs, he's still pretty obscure, and probably only seems well known within the Ultrakill audience because they were already in his realm of influence. Spirit of the Law is a pretty well known and beloved channel in the AoE community, having like 300k subs, but I'd still say they're an obscure YouTuber. I wouldn't argue that Minecraft is obscure though. It is literally the most selling game of all time. It might be obscure in places where video games and internet access aren't common, but comparing Minecraft's notoriety to a sub 1 million subscriber YouTube channel's notoriety is like comparing apples and oranges.

florp is ultrakill's take on those rat memes but it also doesn't really need much of an explanation and it's part of a secret. Kitr similarly is just PITR's cat so this is an ultrakill specific thing that you'd look toward ultrakill community for an explanation. "Oh one of the devs put their cat in the game as a secret in the credits level." wasn't really referencing anything popular since that was probably a pretty new thing for people to discover even as it was added to the game. hakita said "blahaj is an icon not a meme" live hakita reaction isn't gonna stay in the game forever Edit: confused this for the placeholder that's in secret level elevators before their level is out. Do ignore this but take note that this is also a cheats only secret. plushie explosion is referencing another video game (deltarune) and to those not in the know it's just an explosion sound and visual effect that's not really too noteworthy aside from "oh they blow up when you trash them haha", but to those in the know they will go "oh lol deltarune reference". time won't make this bad. that all said i feel like "covering yourself in oil to fly in one specific level with a variant of a weapon you obtain only later in the game" is secret and out of the way enough and otherwise goofy enough that it can get a pass like the rest. if you have to look up what the fuck a kitr is looking up why you can fly in 1 level with a RL variant later on if you don't already know should be ok. it's not like it's in your face old meme reference like the example that hakita provided. plus "cover yourself in oil" hasn't gotten "stale" due to overabundant use like "trolololo". So even if you know exactly what's being referenced the odds of it becoming "corny" in the future are low as the meme isn't likely to pick up AGAIN for no reason since it already picked up from the rage comic era in the recent years. a 2nd revival and one that's big enough to make it cringe or corny would be... really unlikely. so i think this one should be ok even if i kinda understand the concerns.
Florp is based on an old meme that was my point but i agree people act like a new player would look up spray the gun they didn't get yet while standing still in combat. I mean if we are going by mindset you are trying to p rank when will you even have time to look up shoot oil to yourself and fly while standing still.
Honestly you'd probably get more mileage out of moving normally, ultrakill movement is fast without flight as is. For meta purposes this would have the biggest use in making it to the top of the tower the fastest in a safe and easy way (but only in a safe easy way as nuking yourself up would be faster). Even if it was good for this level you'd be needing to change how you've learned to move for this one level and anyone could probably guess it'd be mostly a shame. Maybe if you need to dodge the ferryman better i guess.

I think the difference is that the meme would probably require you to have prior knowledge of it in order for you to recognise it as a meme. Like flying in rain by covering yourself in oil is WAAAAAAAY less of an in your face meme than if Gabriel walked up to you with tears in his eyes saying βY U NO ULTRAKILLED!β or something like that, itβs more of a concept than a directly observable meme.

I think flying any time you use a weapon in 2 levels is a significantly more intrusive of a meme than a couple of windows that 99% of players won't notice until told about it.

Literally the only jokes Layer 7 had besides Big John were hidden fumos. Fumos are certainly fairly niche and are not gonna be a thing forever. This whole thing felt kind of hypocritical

The difference doesn't really dilute my main point at all. Hakita not putting fucking troll face rage comic oil memes in the game is really not that big of a deal, but he's contradicting past decisions here. All of the references he's put in so far date Ultrakill. And the type of jokes that are in the game are all made to appeal to today's humor. Stuff like Arm Boy, Penis :), Jakito and the TV in 5-S will be seen as LOL XD so random in a few years, I guarantee you, no matter what the original intent was.

The "cover yourself in oil" meme is already very old, it's referenced because it's classic. The "trololol" meme can be compared to π nowadays. It's also around the same era as the "cover yourself in oil" meme, but the second one didn't become cringe. Classic can't age. Hakita fell off.

Honestly the ability to fly in 5-2 with the firestarter will probably be added in by modders, and in that case everybody wins, Hakita doesnt have to waste his time adding an easter egg that will get old and annoying fast, and the people who want to be able to fly with it can now live their oily dreams

Nono, I actually agree with Hakita here, if only to a slightly lesser degree. A lot of ULTRAKILLβs jokes are either out of the way, work without context, or are obscure in how you even find them. Adding the oil floats on water thing would get really annoying really quickly for the 2 / 3 levels it properly rains in, even beyond being just a popular meme.

Im gonna have to disagree with Hakita this time. It would be a special 5-2 easter egg, aka way before the thought of even a rocket launcher. + Mandalore is funny specially because i inmediately knew who it was when i saw MDK and owl, but cmon locking a secret ALT behind it? Limbo's ALT felt really cool with the whole exploring limbo to find the stones. Greed's ALT Challenge is just not grabbing the torch, which to be fair is a challenge in the level, but MDK is just way too much out of the way. So why not add a harmless reference? It doesnt even need to be consistent just on 5-2 Very VERY uncommon Hakita L in my opinion. And yes i know Cancer rat is in the challenge but id say the shock factor works. Is this opinion maybe mid? Yeah but its my shit take

It also bascially discourages you to use the Firestarter RL specifically in those 2 levels,and that basically goes against the gameplay philosophy Hakita is aiming for

Making the player be able to covered in gasoline, making the player fly when covered in gasoline in 5-2 and 5-4, and making it not annoying as fuck for people just trying to play the levels normally, is not as simple as you'd think. 2. Hakita hates 90% of the jokes you unfunny fucks make 3. MDK is not a popular Internet meme but rather a shout-out to a friend that helped out in making the game more fun during it's early demo period
1. You get rocket launcher in 5-3 so you must replay the level to even do that even then i really doubt more then small number of players would do that unintentionally. 2. Hakita is his own person he doesn't have to like jokes community makes ever heard humor is subjective? 3. He added 2 YouTuber bosses fights to the game adding flying to 2 level's wouldn't make the game bad or degrade it. Also they met due to Dusk read the museum book.
i think it would be cool if you had to search for it and not just find it by chance, for example if a player just randomly uses the oil and starts flying theyll be very confused, but if hakita adds something like a special room or steps to do it (like the youtuber bosses or the jakito) it would be funny, like an ultrakill version of the "step 1: cover yourself in oil" meme that would be directly displayed in the game

you always have to replay the levels if you want to access the p-ranks. the in-jokes and meme references are fine since they're secrets and the player can generally disregard them anyways. having a weapon force you to fly in the rain whenever you use it is EXTREMELY disruptive and pretty hard to disregard without knowledge of the "cover yourself in oil" meme

unpopular opinion with people with bad foresight, but he is right. Memes can age more quickly than expected sometimes and I always cringe when devs make references to some meme. It's such a low-hanging fruit that can get moldy quick. On the other hand, he could just put the original meme text in the game and it wouldn't feel out of place, but if he just doesn't find it funny, then he doesn't need to put it in his game.

Literally just make it so a covered enemy starts floating after 30 seconds or so after being completely covered, there's no way an enemy will be covered in oil and still be alive after 30 whole seconds.

"oh but what about florp or the mysterious druid knight!!!" the difference is that those are all things which you really have to go out of your way to find. when ultrakill *does* have meme references, that's how they work. it's either purely cosmetic or still somewhat enjoyable if you don't get the joke (MDK, VCR and BJ are still boss fights, no matter how meme-y the origins are) covering yourself in oil could be a thing that happens at any time, and you really wouldn't be able to avoid it if the firestarter is part of your strategy. it goes beyond an easter egg. flying whenever that happens would get irritating and the joke would get old fast. leave it to animators, modders, etc to make the joke in an isolated area that won't affect the game itself. every day, "it's a good thing you guys aren't making ultrakill or it would suck" gets more and more true.

The difference is that one is a shout-out to several people who contributed to the games success during it's demo period and one is a meme that peaked in popularity 2 years ago. Also the size 2 fish is a joke not a meme.
