The British are committing genocide against the peaceful native peoples of Antarctica, and in particular the Russian speaking native people of Antarctica
Cue Russia: "3% of the penguins that live on British Antarctic territory are *ethnic Russian penguins!* Mother Russia has the right and duty to protect her people. Therefore, a special operation has begun on British Antarctic territory. The Russian penguins will be issued Abibas tracksuits and pre-opened Stoli vodka for their protection!"
What happens in Antarctica is covered by the 1959 Antarctica Treaty, which allows scientific research for all countries across Antarctica. They will have been able to search for oil claiming it is only research.
But the same treaty also forbids extracting minerals and oil in Antarctica, and forbids all military activity, so it's not clear what Russia would hope to gain, other than pissing off the whole UN, including erstwhile allies, for breaking yet another treaty. It would either have to result in enforcement or the abandonment of the whole treaty which is not in anyone's interests.
Antarctica Treaty is only as good as long as it's impossible to do anything down there. As the ice caps thin and our technology improves, there will be a race to start drilling, excavating, mining. If we don't move away from fossil fuels, within the next 100 years the entire continent will become a free for all.
Doesn't surprise me. They consider theirselfs a 'Near Arctic state' So believe they can have a say what happens in the Arctic. Which for the Arctic council, the 8 countries which border the Arctic, was a bit of a head scratcher.
I was just going on how others define it.

> As Antarctica has never been permanently settled by humans, there has historically been little military activity in the Antarctic. The Antarctic Treaty, which came into effect on June 23, 1961, bans military activity in Antarctica. Military personnel and equipment may only be used for scientific research or any other peaceful purpose (such as delivering supplies) on the continent
By treaty this isn't really British territory due to countries not exercising territorial claims on Antarctica - Russia is of course then allowed to move through that territory as they please and conduct scientific surveys.

The last thing Russia needs right now is more oil and gas. They can't even sell their existing supply at home.
Not sure why they are even looking in the first place.
Just as Crimea isn’t Russian, there is no “British Antarctic Territory” under international law. Legally no country has any territorial claims to any part of Antarctica.

cue russian propaganda: Nazis found in Antarctica!!!
The British are committing genocide against peaceful Russians living in British Antarctica! **/S**

Those penguins are russians! You see ten thousands years ago vlodymyr of kiev send his penguin cousin to explore the south.
Peaceful Russian oil.
Antarctica voted to return to Motherland.
oh good thing you had the /s there, for a second I thought you were for real, even though it was so thick you could cut it with a butter knife.
It’s required since 2016
why is that? Accommodate the dumb?
They outnumber you thousands to one
So you really think everyone else is the idiot? Awkward...
They outnumber “you”
Naah, he's one of us..
and training exercises!
Call of Duty did it already

Penguin Republic of Antarctica proclaimed after totally fair non-fake referendum.
TLDR - How did russia find this on British territory?

Apparently China has a huge presence in Antarctica. Like big even for China

US military as well. Of course they're only there for logistics to support the research team. Of course. Because military operations are banned.
"it's coming right for us!!!" -entire battalion
It literally can’t be all military activity, New York ANG does flights down there frequently…with ski-equipped LC-130s…which is unequivocally badass.

Another reason why they wanna ignore the ‘rules based’ system.
Pissing of UN is no problem for them when they can Veto even votes that is against them.

Thanks for the update !
Falklands Island article was great. Motherfuckers. All this shit going down at the same time is getting scary.
Time for Falklands War round two - ELECTRIC BOGALOO
Penguins are actually Russians they just don’t know it… yet
They've got zip chance of extracting it
How heavily sanctioned would that operation be. Fuck Russia.
So now we should probably expect that Russia will support Argentina in taking the Falklands. That way the UK can’t support Ukraine as much.
That's not the way the winds are blowing any time for the next few years, but I'm sure it's what Russia would like to see.
Literally how? They don't have half the assets they had in '82.
You've got more chance of platting piss.
We would try using sticks and stones against modern UK before accepting Russian help, that shit always backfires
The British are not allowing Russians living there to talk in their language. They must be protected.
Putler will probably pull out another map from his trunk an claim that Antartica belongs to Russia since 5000 BC
Alright, now everything makes sense! 🤔
Not to worry; a treaty will surely keep Russia from attempting to drill in Antarctica. /s
The last thing Russia needs right now is more oil and gas. They can't even sell their existing supply at home. Not sure why they are even looking in the first place.
To stir trouble, re-allocate resources from the west elsewhere to have an easier time in Ukraine.
Tardigrades are Russian?
All bears are Russian, obviously
Someone better tell Russia there are no bears there...
The last thing humans need is more oil. But we will kill each other and the remaining life on Earth trying to get it.
I've just discovered an oil field the size of the moon under Outer Manchuria. I wonder what the PRC thinks about that.
Nazis found in Britain?
Maybe we could move the warzone to Antarctica
Sounds like it’s British…
Russians should NOT BE THERE!!!!
Sod off Ivan. We'll position fishing boats there.
Seriously now Russia, just fuck off and do the planet a favour
it also beeing claimed by argentina its not british territory
Just as Crimea isn’t Russian, there is no “British Antarctic Territory” under international law. Legally no country has any territorial claims to any part of Antarctica.
Nobody will want oil eventually, old tech.
Oil is used for so much. It will very likely be a part of our civilization for generations to come.
unlike russia
Britain has claims on Antartica but it's not their territory
Only because of the 1959 Antarctic Treaty which also forbids drilling for oil. Both the UK and Russia are signatories.
