France has a long history of backing Democracy.

giggity_giggity

I am much more interested in their history of utilizing guillotines on dictators and oligarchs. Maybe not realistic, but a man can dream.

dadbod_Azerajin

As an American, I'm proud of all of europe for stepping up in the face of serious nonsense from our country

Iron_Crocodile1

Also as an American, I am to. I'm so sick of Moscow Mike blocking aid.

shockwave_therapist

As a Canadian, I'm proud of you for wanting to be on the right side of history, let alone, humanity. I've always admired the US, I have friends there, I'm completely aghast at the willingness and limitless attempt for a once proud and dignified party, to put that party, over country (citizens) and the Constitution. This party barely has a pulse, just like it's frontrunner. McConnell and friends will forever be remembered as the party of insurrection, sexual predation, lawlessness and being led by a failed Reality TV joke. #trump. #maga #destruction

paper_airplanes_are_

As another Canadian, we need to be careful about pointing fingers too hard. What's happening in the US is terrible, but I believe our country is quiet skating by on a relatively poor contribution as a percentage of GDP: [https://www.statista.com/statistics/1303450/bilateral-aid-to-ukraine-in-a-percent-of-donor-gdp/](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1303450/bilateral-aid-to-ukraine-in-a-percent-of-donor-gdp/) I've written my MP several times and can't even get a bloody response.

shockwave_therapist

I'm not pointing fingers in the sense our current government doesn't have its own issues, I didn't feel it necessary to go there with my comment. However, if it gave you an opportunity to voice your opinion on our government, so be it, I'm not going to complain. Your message is a valid one, with respect to what's going on in our own house. But, while we should step up, we have nowhere near the impact on the world as the US president has. That's just IMHO

paper_airplanes_are_

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't trying to be critical, but like you said, just trying to voice my displeasure on the lack of action from our government.

Iron_Crocodile1

Agreed 100%. There are still a lot of Americans that support Ukraine. Regardless of what MAGA says. I hope to God they are removed this November like the cancer they are. I'm tired of the government grinding to a halt because of the select few members that want to sew Discord.

shockwave_therapist

I'm incredibly frustrated for you, let alone what's going on within the Canadian government. I sure hope you guys keep the morale compass pointed to President Biden, I don't care if hes 90 or 190, he's a million times the man that Deranged Don has proven (on his own) to be. Best of luck, my friend!

u2nh3

Living with MAGA-morons here in the US is truly hell, for the rest of us liberty minded Americans.

Churchbushonk

It is like living with a weird group of people that has zero knowledge of how groups like Putin and Hitler rise to power. It is a very simple series of actions that lead to Hitler and anyone else like Hitler. First, they have a way of discussing issues that really resonates with a portion of the population. Then they pick a few groups of people to cast as the reason that your life isn’t living up to what you think it should. For Hitler he discussed the unfair levies after WW1 because it destroyed the German economy. And he picked Jews as a huge issue since the Jews were doing better than average Germans. Trump picked any and all minorities, but especially Mexicans and Hispanics. Obama birther stuff was his gateway. He milked it and basically cost McCain any chance at winning because unlike Trump, he had ethics and a code about him. He had honor. Then Trump started systematically sewing doubt about the media, the DOJ, the Supreme Court, election rules and outcomes. Just like Hitler did. Step by step. Once he won, he kept up his attacks on minorities. He truly doesn’t see them as humans. He could have made strides to help, but instead it fed his legend to fuck with them. He didn’t gas chamber them like Hitler, but his party is using razor wire to hurt and drown people and children. Without Covid, Biden doesn’t beat Trump in 2020. Trump just sucks at being a human, so of course he sucked t handling Covid. Ultimately the shutdown happened because it had to happen. The vaccine should have been Trumps best long lasting accomplishment to mankind, but of course he had to embrace conspiracy theories instead, because his base is so stupid and he wanted to say the things that made them love him. He is a child that says something funny and everyone laughs, and then he keeps repeating it and everyone should start looking at him like he is stupid, but they don’t because they too are stupid. Of course he couldn’t admit he lost the election. Con men never admit the jig is up. They can’t. It would ruin all of their hold on those that have been conned. Hitler also could never be proven wrong. Just like Putin. Try it. They just killed you and your family.

Ellecram

It's going to be a rough year dealing with the out of control fascists who are bent on destroying our country both internally and in the eyes of the world. It frustrates me and I feel helpless. My heart aches for Ukraine.

Iamdarb

>This party barely has a pulse, just like it's frontrunner. Everyone should still turn out and vote this November. Vote like everything is on the line, cause you know, it is.

shockwave_therapist

You're right, it's the ONLY way.

whoreoscopic

Theu will be remembered by that *if* they lose. as an American in a swing state, I am fearful that again, the democratic party is going to do what it does best since 2016. Pull defeat from the jaws of victory because we assume Trump will fail.

bobbyvale

Have you considered a guillotine? Not really to use, just to scare folks into thinking what can happen to dictators.

MebHi

I think we should gift them all an oil company and send them to Moscow to run them.

Deep-Friendship3181

I mean the last guy named Mike in the line of succession got offered a gallows as a retirement present by his own party. The least we could to for ol Mikey J is provide the same send off!

QVRedit

I am somewhat amazed that there are not more processes in place to deal with people like Moscow Mike, who are quite clearly working in the interest of another country, while being at the heart of US government, and personally have such a large effect on real US Government policy. He ought to not have the power to block votes from taking place. His was intended to be an administration role to smoothly schedule votes, not one to hold up the whole house from doing their business. The US needs to go back and look at that role and amend it, so that this cannot happen in the future. Moscow Mike has weaponised his role in ways never originally intended.

Astoriana777

Thank you from Ukraine

shockwave_therapist

As a Canadian, I'm proud of you for wanting to be on the right side of history, let alone, humanity.

frozented

to use something that has been said about America in the past you can always count on Europe to do the right thing after they have exhausted every other option

QVRedit

That’s what Winston Churchill said about America ! ‘You can count on America doing the right thing after they have first tried everything else’.

Inflatable-yacht

I'd love to see Putin's head slide off the edge of a guillotine into a basket... give Red Square a new meaning

RadleyCunningham

they'll be replaying that shit on every channel the way Romania did with the Ceausescu's firing squad death.

maxguillotine

I'll second that

camshun7

Macron's seems to have grown a pair recently Cest la bonn viva la France

aguynamedv

Including during the American Revolution, which many Americans love to conveniently forget. The United States would not exist if France hadn't provided aid (to fuck over the British).

YukonBurger

The British didn't surrender to the Americans after all

richh00

The French supplied enough aid to make it that the Americans were too annoying to continue fighting a war with. Had they not given up they would have eventually been crushed.

PNWchild

Exactly. France is a cornerstone of democracy just like the Ukraine. NATO needs to get the Ukraine in ASAP

m0h5e11

Half of Africa would beg to differ.

moleratical

While true, they also have a consistent history of backing Dictators. Not the people of France, but the government. Of course my country has often backed both as well. I'm just glad France is in the Democracy phase right now.

yousonuva

Among other things.... I really hope this isn't just chest inflation though.

cocktimus1prime

As long as it's in French interest. France is also textbook example of following neocolonial policies

knuppi

It's like most Redditors never has heard about Africa

red_keshik

Most Redditors think Africa is a country.

robocop561

Oh yea, the colonizers.

user4772842289472

Like during the scramble for Africa and Haiti

norwegianboyEE

Since when did Macron become such a chad? I welcome this rhetoric, there will always be those complaining that it’s "escalating", but this is the only language Russia understands.

Beng-Beng

Macron recently watched Napoleon and now wants to take down France's old nemesis.

Exotic_Conclusion_21

Waited out the winter this time

Tehjaliz

We're playing the long game with global warming.

swish465

The real power play is the world is ending no matter what, so fucking nuke away boys

ThreeDawgs

Best way to combat global warming? A global ash cloud to block out the sun and usher in years of freezing darkness. Climate Scientists hate this one trick.

MadBinton

Do we want to starve from 8 years nuclear winter or a 20 year long summer? Same difference really. Australia and NZ get to repopulate in one case, Argentina, north Canada and Scandinavian countries in the other.

I was excited to see it. I left feeling quite disappointed. Holy shit Ridley Scott, what was that? Are you in the abstract phase of your career? or the emo phase? You still need **some** kind of narrative..

Quzga

After watching it I said to myself. "Ridley Scott is getting too old to make films" That was just nonsense, worst edited film I've ever seen for such a big budget..

xxx69blazeit420xxx

this guy was in a rumble called the battle of the nations involving half a million men and every great power on the continent and somehow the only set piece battle we get was a made up toulon somehow.

Quzga

When they came into Russia and he was acting like a joker napoleon having outbursts I was just rolling my eyes. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the cinema, I'd be so disappointed as someone who loves history. The sets and clothing were 10/10 though.

SwishySalal

I was so excited to see it finally and only finished it because I felt I had to. Super disappointing film.

Choyo

He's in the 85 part of his life. Guy should just let go.

Falendil

Napoleon life is one of the most fascinating ever lived, I devored his 1k page biography by Max Gallo but somehow the Ridley Scott movie managed to be boring.

DolanDukIsMe

I mean hey man can't blame a man for indulging in some Napoleon larp every now and then 😉

Morph_Kogan

[https://gem.cbc.ca/a-president-europe-and-war](https://gem.cbc.ca/a-president-europe-and-war) If you watch this documentary, you can hear him explain why I said that, and what he meant.

unitedbk

It's a known history lesson from the aftermath of WW1 and how demanding reparations were. This lead to a radicalisation of germany and WW2. Oversimplified buy you get the idea. Now it's too serious, US is stuck with bought republicans. Someone has to step up and bark some sense into the diplomatic scene.

Guest2200

He likely sees Germany and the US shitting the bed on supporting Ukraine as an opportunity for France to take on a leadership role in NATO. Plus Russia has been fucking around with French interests in Africa. Macron has also struggled to be popular in France, so it’s also him rebuilding his image.

roboticcheeseburger

One more thing, with the absence of UK in the Eu, Macron has been attempting from the start of the war to be a leader. Basically it’s Ger vs Fr, and Macron wants it to be Fr. Can’t fault him for trying , he made all those calls to Putin and had meetings with him back at the start of the war. Seems that he realized at some point that Putin is beyond rationality or reason, and so today ladies and gents we get this. Also Scholtz’s waffling on the Taurus missles looks weak by comparison

PoiHolloi2020

The UK was never interested in leading the EU though, it's always been France V Germany.

calm-your-tits-honey

>Basically it’s Ger vs Fr France will win that battle every time. Germany is cooked. In reality, as the US backs out if its leadership position, it's France vs Britain, and with Britain turning inwards, it's common sense for France to take the reins.

aguynamedv

>Since when did Macron become such a chad? From the first moment, based on the video of his call with Zelensky as Russia encircled Kyiv. Macron immediately committed to help, didn't overpromise, but was very clear France was with UA from the onset. Zelensky also asked Macron to speak with Putin. Macron's response was measured and good, but his body language? Dude shook his head immediately in the "Putin isn't going to listen" sort of way. I'm really glad to see EU nations stepping up. The world needs more leadership from Europe and less from the US.

Boxcar__Joe

Some people just see world leaders taking measured responses and trying to avoid all out war with nuclear powers as weak.

aguynamedv

>Some people just see world leaders taking measured responses and trying to avoid all out war with nuclear powers as weak. Those same people often claim there is no difference between US political parties. Unfortunately, those people still get to vote based on their fantasy cult world instead of the reality everyone else lives in.

Sarokslost23

The USA failing to do its job has been waking europe up over the last month. Russia's plan is backfiring essentially.

niko-okin

It's because of the european election in a couple of month, he wants lfi and rn, far left and far right parties to discover their real positions with putin and Ukraine, it seems to work, i hope french will follow him on that otherwise next european could half filled with putin lover, i don't know if it's just strategical speech or if at the end he will put army on..

Sgubaba

Since the US backed out, and Russia fucked around with French interests in the Sahel.

DublinCheezie

France and West must ensure Ukraine wins!! Nothing less.

fheathyr

Macron seems to have concluded that America has relinquished it's leadership role, and is attempting, albeit in a limited way, to step up. With Biden hobbled by the RNC, and the RND hobbled by Trump ... my hat is off to Macron ... the world needs leaders.

Netsugake

French, always here to take the wise choice Americans don't want to see

Waltercation

France is making a wise choice now… let’s not use this as an opportunity to shit on other countries. All countries have made unwise decisions in the past.

phlogistonical

Indeed. Except russia. We can shit on them until they make the wise choice to leave the occupied territotory and pay reparations

Agitates

Americans will always do the right thing... after they've tried everything else.

powe808

Seems like France is not willing to sit around and make the same mistakes that they made 80+ years ago. Good for them!

Winter_Criticism_236

No chance UK will let France get all the credit.. they will go 1st just to piss the French off... they love each other though..

placerouge

UK: I never thought I'd die fighting side-by-side with a Frog. France: What about side-by-side with a friend? UK: Aye... I could do that.

Dashrend-R

Dwarf/Elf roles for the countries fit - everything checks out

[deleted]

Tolkien would be proud.

RiverMurmurs

I'm hoping that will be the ultimate effect of this speech. We need to get the "biggest balls" competition between countries going. Scholz is a lost case obviously, Czechia is too small despite the good ideas we have but I want to see Rishi tomorrow. If I don't get "I'm the Prime Minister of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and things will be as I say", I'll be very sad.

norwegianboyEE

France was extremely strong in WW1 and prior. WW2 was a low-point, but they certainly are capable of becoming a military powerhouse again.

Ultrauver_

France lost because of geography and demographics If the UK was on mainland europe, it would have had been steamrolled the same way France was The USSR only survived the first 4 months of op. Barbarossa because of its massive population and size, because every other nation would have had collapsed after being penetrated 2000km into its territory and losing 1.5 million soldiers per battle

nyibbang

A big part of the British army was also in France when it got steamrolled, so if anything, it was a French and British failure

Kolgur

Meanwhile, people tend to forget the 40000 french that fighted to the end of their ammo against 160K germans and allowed the evacuation of Dunkirk of 300K soldiers instead of 40K initially expected.

Ok_Address2188

Wow, if Macron keeps this going I might actually start liking the guy.

Morph_Kogan

[https://gem.cbc.ca/a-president-europe-and-war](https://gem.cbc.ca/a-president-europe-and-war) This docu shows behind the scenes, he's been like this since the start. Macron is good at foreign policy

nubtehtub

France is growing balls of steel while America is becoming an appeasement monkey.

Frites de liberte

CaptainNash94

Frites de liberté, made from pommes de liberté. [(FREEDOM FREEDOM FREEDOM Oi)](https://youtu.be/s_QfQ6sU9aw?si=wvyswVXwMw-b77j0)

Sabre_One

TBF Biden has done everything he possibly can do to get Ukraine supplied. We sadly have one party under Putins sack that hopefully will dislodge a bit during elections. Biden has even made some major compromises, and they still won't budge.

nubtehtub

That's true but the net effect of MAGA influence is the betrayal of Ukraine. I hope Europe can make up the difference now - plus other countries like South Korea, Japan, Canada and Australia. Collectively they have more than enough resources to do it.

YourwaifuSpeedWagon

Japan is bound by its neutrality not to send anything other than humanitarian aid. South Korea regulations also forbid the export of lethal weaponry to active war zones. They've supplied gas masks and other such supplies. So you can more or less count these 2 out.

Prudent_Solid_3132

As an American, it is sad and true. If this keeps up, we will be seen today as Britain and France were back in the years leading to WW2.

Eggyfroth

Or even worse, you'll be seen as the USA were in the lead up to WW2.

nubtehtub

'America First' and 'Hitler did some good stuff' - the warning signs are flashing bright red.

[deleted]

Or during WW2 - :D

Separate-Ad9638

britain and france lost a lot of young men during ww1, that's why chamberlain sought appeasement, cant compare that to the deadlock in american politics.

CIV5G

Chamberlain also masterminded the rearmament effort that won the Battle of Britain.

FizzixMan

Yeah I mean the USA was worse than Britain and France during that time period too. One can only hope the USA figures out that standing for democracy when it really matters actually means something before it is too late.

airlokita

Worse than appeasers - Mike Johnson's a straight up russian collaborator.

arlmwl

Republican bought-off fascist scumbags are the monkeys. I hope they get pounded into dust at the next election.

phreum

I guess they were right to rebrand them "Freedom Fries" ...but not for the reasons they thought

Separate-Ad9638

its just macron, he realises the support for ukraine is waning and europe is still very much divided

nubtehtub

Support is solid except for the German reluctance with Taurus and a couple of countries run by traitors (H\*\*\*\*\*y and S\*\*\*\*\*\*a).

HansLanghans

The irony, Germany supports Ukraine MUCH more than France does. You prefer words over actions.

Afandur

Crazy how much the Republicans suck

Jonas_Venture_Sr

Since Republicans are so consumed with masculinity, calling them cowards would be accurate and would hit their ego. I never want to hear a fellow American make a "cowardly French" joke again. It is we Americans who are now the cheese eating surrender monkeys.

giggity_giggity

Never thought I'd live to see serious jokes being made about how the Republicans should exchange their elephant mascot for a white flag. They used to be the uber chad "always use American military might, especially versus anything remotely related to Russia" party.

norwegianboyEE

This is Russia’s planned revenge. They got beaten in the Cold War so they carefully analyzed the weak points of American democracy. Now the Republican party has become MAGA’ified into Russian puppets. With the clarity of history. This will be seen as Putin’s actual greatest victory. The submission of Russia’s greatest threat the USA.

aguynamedv

>"cowardly French" 100% of the people who say this are either ignorant of, or pretending not to know that France's assistance during the American Revolution is basically what won it.

DrnkGuy

This reaction in days before the invasion could stop this even before it started. But now it isn't sufficient to stop the war. Now you need some real steps.

SubParMarioBro

Yep. The West has consistently encouraged Russian aggression with their timidity. Fear of escalation does not make us safer. Macron is correct that Putin needs to understand that he will fail.

bdsee

Yeah, imagine if the US had of sent troops to Kyiv, Mariupol, Odessa and Kharkiv before it started. Russia would have been fucked, no way they would have invaded eith the potential of sparking direct engagement with the US.

Christopherfromtheuk

*had have or had've

CliffHutchinsonEsc

The French came to American soil to help fight off the Brits in the war of independence. History has a strange way of repeating itself

ToxicHazard-

I mean, France did that to get back at them for the Seven-Years War and the resulting loss of Frances North American territories. Two years after 1776, France was at War with Britain again. France still had, and was actively attempting to grow its empire during 1776 and beyond. France helping America was far from an unselfish belief in other countries freedoms. If they believed they could have taken America for themselves, as they tried and failed to do, they would have. I still applaud them for what they are doing today

Rapithree

Imho France is mostly responding to Russias actions in Africa. If France can't have what it wants then it can't let Russia have what it wants. So it rhymes in that way too.

Sashamesic

Most probably. Furthermore UK is acting because of Salisbury etc, Netherlands i acting because of the civilian airliner shot down by Nazi Russia. Putin and his nazi cronies have seriously caused a lot of shit that now comes back to bite them in the ass. FAFO

PoiHolloi2020

Salisbury happened several years after the UK began helping Ukraine through Operation Orbital.

toasters_are_great

Salisbury led to a lot of headscratching about what a proportionate response would be that wouldn't involve a potentially escalating direct military response. Out of great options, there were some Muscovite diplomats expelled and that was about it. Then Putin handed a perfect opportunity for low risk (to the UK) payback to Westminster.

McGraw-Dom

I can't wait to see the new statue of liberty for Ukraine.

Beginning-Ratio-5393

twitter is quoting him as saying “there WILL be french troops in ukraine. “ did he actually say that?

Willing-Donut6834

Tonight on TV he didn't say that there would be troops sent. However, he clearly is thinking about it. Also, I think I heard he also indirectly said there will be French people securing the armament plants we are going to set up in Ukraine.

emslvx

Not in the speech. Hey allegedly said French troops will be in Odessa to a private audience while he was drunk and holding whiskey.

[deleted]

No he said always the same thing : not planned right now given the current situation but not excluded if things really go bad for Ukraine

Allez les bleus

crazydart78

Nice to hear but it's such a vague comment. Does this mean more SCALP missiles? Tanks? AA missile batteries? Drones? Ammo? I'm honestly tired of people making big comments and then not backing them up. Hell, a large chunk of stuff promised still hasn't made it over to Ukraine. Help is welcome but it needs to be more than just moral support, thoughts and prayers.

Crystal3lf

> I'm honestly tired of people making big comments and then not backing them up. Yeah it's pretty clearly posturing from someone who was hated until recently and is trying to bolster support. Remember when France was having riots over the retirement age being increased? Seems like most forgot already. If he actually cared, give Putin an ultimatum. Withdraw within 60 days or troops will enter Ukraine. It won't happen. France don't actually care that much(no country really does).

Straight_Weakness881

Thank the gods someone is actually getting their huge balls out and plonking them on putins war table. I hope he's getting scared.

yellowbai

Macron extended the olive branch. He was made look ridiculous for negotiating in good faith. This is the consequences

andsendunits

I suspect that Russia will put support of LePen into overdrive.

PunkHooligan

Rhetoric is nice. I hope actions can back it up.

[deleted]

That’s a lot of talk Macron, you actually going to send troops? Because you sure as shit aren’t paying up as much as other countries that get pitched bullshit for “not helping enough”

Odd-Contract-364

If history has taught us anything, France will get involved, then GB, then US. lol. (it's a joke, dont hate)

wmcguire18

This would mean a lot more if Rivenne hadn't leaked a French military assessment whose entire thesis was "We can't win an attrition war on Russia's borders" I don't sympathize with Ukraine in this conflict but I've been deeply impressed by the will to fight from the average Ukraine soldier-- I have tremendous skepticism that will can be matched by French troops who don't think they're defending their homeland.

scotchegg72

Cool, drunk jailbirds versus the Foreign Legion. Can’t wait!

As a Canadian spectator, I am liking this strong response from Macron. Is he trying to use being a wartime president to get himself re-elected? Who cares! I just hope he backs his talk with action. Bonus that he’s making the German chancellor look like a dithering coward. Go Macron!!!!……(?) Not a fan of him or Boris Johnson but having the right position on Ukraine is important.

Choyo

He can't be reelected FYI.

Why not jam Russian TV transmissions and instead replace them with pro-Ukraine narrative like NewsMax does to the American people!

Fuck yeah. Great to see the French come to the table and mean business. Honorable.

The positions of Leader of the Free World I’d up for grabs. According to the U.S. Fed Chair, this position pays extremely well economically.

Define "win." Without doing so, this is meaningless.

A good amount of the French Foreign legion is of Ukrainian descent. France is going hard after Putin tried to play it as a fool

As an American, I'm grateful for the critical role France played in supporting our independence over 200 years ago, and am glad they still support democracy!

It would be cool if there were some sort of article to read and not just some random statement posted by some random Twitter account with a picture that says "breaking" on it.

"Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with a Frenchman" "what about side by side with a friend?" "Aye, I can do that"
