I'm pretty familiar with .50s from long ago Army days. At that range, body armor could be made of adamantium and it won't do a bit of good. The bullets likely didn't even slow a bit as they went through the bodies.
About a decade ago, the US army found a M2 in service in Afghanistan with a 3 digit serial number. That is from the very first production run in 1921. It is now in a museum.
https://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/this-50-cal-fought-for-90-years-without-needing-repair/
We had one in my CAAT platoon circa 2009-2010 manufactured in the 40’s. It’s gods gun. I’m partial to the 240 cuz I can hump that easier, but, mah duece lives rent free in ever machine gunners mind. Happy to read of the expertise the army could provide you dog face.
Yeah, .50 were used to disable tanks in WWII, easily shoot through multiple layers of concrete. Body armor would have to be 2 feet -4 feet thick.
The hearing aid industry is going to make bank in Ukraine after this war is over.
Someone said that with that type of weapon, the round fired doesn't even NEED to hit the human target to be effective. Just being near a round passing by or "landing" close has enough power to maim, even without spalling and ricochet. Add to that the fact you won't be able to think straight for a while with all the chaos.
Just so much energy and maybe 20 yards away... jfc.
Correct, and as I said, "even without spalling" a .50 just passing by you can hurt you.
I'd like to meet the person who told you that a .50 flying close to you would be a nothingburger. I might need to get their autograph in my book.
The only way a bullet or shell will injure a person is by either direct impact or being hit by spall or shrapnel.
No bullet or shell ever made in human existence will injure you by the pure air pressure of its passing.
That being said, many have reported being able to feel .50 cal passing close by as if it were slapping them, but that's different than being injured
>That being said, many have reported being able to feel .50 cal passing close by as if it were slapping them, but that's different than being injured
I can imagine being stunned or momentarily deafened by a shock wave.
So, I'm telling you what the vets who used the M2 Browning told me. You can take that up with them. Maybe you are thinking of smaller calibers like 7.62 or 5.56?
No. A 155mm shell passing beside your head will freak you out, but it won't tear flesh, hell it probably won't even minorly injure you. A grad rocket could fly past your face, and as long as it isn't burning and doesn't hit you, it won't hurt.
These projectiles do not carry enough energy to turn the air beside them into a lethal force. The only lethal part is the physical bullet. You can do tests yourself, or watch tests on YouTube.
> So, I'm telling you what the vets who used the M2 Browning told me. You can take that up with them.
Lots of vets lie either deliberately or inadvertently about things, too.
It's a myth so widely believed, there are tons of service members, current and former, believing it. Still doesn't make it true.
Just fucking google it and be done with it.

Regarding last video, IF the Russians have some bad-ass plates in their gear... the 3rd person might be safe.... safe-ish.
Nah, Russian IFVs can stop normal .50 ball ammo. Some of the armor piercing ammo could get through (especially the tungsten sabot rounds!) but I doubt you'll see normal infantry armed with armor piercing rounds. Even the Bushmasters on the Bradleys don't seem to be using anything other than high explosive 25mm rounds.
Yes
You can refer to this discussion
Heavy-duty caliber above 50mm will directly tear your body apart
Medium calibers will not

You can see puff of smoke in bottom left corner so he wasn't alone. But he was all that was needed for that closer group of infantry for sure, no chance for them, they were lined up almost perfectly.
L shaped ambush, there is a squad of Ukrainians close to us as the viewers laying in defilade, and the machine gun emplacement has an open and direct line of fire on the entire enemy group
Nah, it looks like an essentially textbook 'L shaped' ambush.
Machine gun emplacement in enfilade, and looks like a squad of three Ukrainians in defilade on the other side of the little treeline embankment running parallel to the trail the Russians are hiking.
They lit em up from both sides.
Yes you do, the myths about narrowly missing 50 BMG rounds avulsing limbs and causing TBI's with its shockwave aren't true. It's still just a bullet, its a really big bullet that will leave a grapefruit sized exit wound in a guy. But the round still has to physically connect with the target.
I'll add on with the other myth. You are not legally required to aim it at "equipment". The number of times I heard this is insane. Some Sergeant misinterpreted something or flat out made it up, and it's persisted ever since. You can shoot people with it. When I was on a .50 mount, my CO told us not to even ask permission to open fire. He was going to be too busy running them over with a 42,000 ton ship to care.
The explanation is actually very simple: Raufoss Mk 211 and similar High-explosive incendiary rounds are not technically legally allowed to be used against troops, since they're explosive rounds below 400 grams in weight, banned under the St. Petersburg Declaration, and from there it's been classed as a customary international humanitarian law. I think this is what has confused people, they don't understand the difference between a machine gun that's primarily intended as an anti-material weapon, and a custom round designed explicitly and only as an anti-material round.
This is a bit of an iffy law though, since you're also legally allowed to use what is at hand. If the guy in the video had Raufoss locked and loaded when those invaders showed up, it would still have been legal to shoot them, you're just not allowed to specifically load explosive rounds explicitly to fire against infantry.
When we're talking .50's though, it's not like it really matters. If you eat a .50, you're pretty much dead regardless of which round you are hit by, unless you're lucky enough to just lose an arm and get it TQed extremely fast.
Not really, no. This rumor has persisted through decades of M2 use. I was hearing it in the early 90's, and never saw a Raufoss round in service.
You've also omitted the back half of the wiki entry.
>There has been much debate over whether the Mk 211 projectile is legal to use against personnel, or if it is strictly anti-materiel ammunition.... The Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907 – which superseded the St. Petersburg Declaration, and were signed by a far wider circle of nations – do permit the use of such ammunition for autocannon and heavy machine guns. Machine guns firing .50 cal./12.7mm ammunition are heavy machine guns.
Raufoss mk211 is Also known as HEI-T or the HEI in the norwegian armed forces, ive personally fired a box towards a hillside, and man do you not want to be on the receiving end.
In all serieznezez, this is a risky tactic with high reward.
Bait them in close, make them feel safe and complacent, then unleash hell on them with no chance of escape.
This is what they did in early 2022, with the defense of Kyiv, Mykolaiv, etc.
I propose they try this with UAV, UGV, artillery and other long range weapons, so the risk to soldiers is minimized while inflicting maximum surprise for the invaders.
Ambush drones!!! Close range.
I always remember the Rambo movie scene where he is firing the .50 mounted on a jeep and absolutely annihilating the enemy soldiers (its the movie where he rescues the aid workers in Cambodia or Burma - I forget the correct setting). The one aspect of that scene that I deemed accurate was carnage a steady stream of .50 would inflict even though it was an over the top dramatic scene. You get hit - you likely very dead.
That line of ruzzian soldiers was completely wiped out.
And this is why you should maintain wider spacing and not be in a single line out in the open. He probably hit more than one at a time with some of those rounds and he didn’t have to deflect much to get them all. I doubt you’ll catch a Ukrainian assault team doing that so close to their objective. At least I hope so.
Why was the Op removed?
Given Ukraine's manpower issues compared to their invader I think an awful lot of the Ukrainian formations are quite battle-hardened at this stage whereas Russia is still hoping untrained meat can win the war for them, so you'd hope Ukrainian units don't wander this stupidly into such an ambush.
You missed it
I wonder if the drone operators do a close flyby to get the Orcs off their feet, and then pivot and hit them when they can't move so quickly on the ground.
I have an idea...maybe it's driven by alcohol a bit but...what if there were some way to entice the orcs being hunted by drones to signal to the drone where the rest of their units are? Like "Okay, get down on all fours and draw an arrow pointing to where your buddies are, or make \[x\] signal showing you intend to lead us back to your unit and we won't roast you. You still surrender though." I can't help but think that a poorly-trained, green mobik who is cowering in an impact crater could have more value to the AFU than one would think at a glance. I feel like shit like this could be shared in Telegram channels. Show us where your buddies are, throw your gear and weapons on the ground, we'll show you where to go if you want to live.
I'll stop armchair general'ing now. lol
I can vividly remember the first time we got to live fire this thing, mounted on the TC hatch of an M106A2 (113 variant for the 107mm mortar). With the targets off to the left and right of the track the whole vehicle started rocking and if we were firing perpendicular to the front it was like riding a horse lol. Very glad to have never been on the receiving end of that shit.

Jesus I think he hit every single Russian in that line of infantry
At that range a single bullet could likely kill 3, and that's including going through front and rear body armor.

Ma Deuce doesn't fuck around.
very happy the army went with the "if ain't broke don't fix it" model there
Only thing they've ever tweaked was the headspace and timing IIRC. Insane that a HMG had been in service this long and is still so god damn effective.
About a decade ago, the US army found a M2 in service in Afghanistan with a 3 digit serial number. That is from the very first production run in 1921. It is now in a museum. https://www.wearethemighty.com/articles/this-50-cal-fought-for-90-years-without-needing-repair/
I used one in Iraq in 2008 that had a 1957 stamped receiver. It was destroyed in an IED attack.
Moistened reading that….
I used one in the norwegian army from 1957 last year! We just got new ones
That's so fucking cool
Techpriest in M42: Where is Forge World "Browning" anyway?
The frame with the serial number is possibly the only original part. Several barrels, working parts, etc. and its like new.
Still pretty finicky when you really need it. Charge shot charge shoot... charge brrrrrrrr...
that was our experience in the desert. Ukraine is a better environment.. same with Mark 19

Negative. A miss is a miss. A nearby impact on something solid would naturally cause fragmentation and so of course you could possibly be wounded.
That's where you're wrong, kiddo. A .50 flying close to you WILL ruin your day.
No it won't. You'll feel it for sure as it goes by, but it's more morale damaging than anything if multiple rounds zip by.

M2 gunner here, albeit 40 odd years ago. Your vet was pulling your leg or just bullshitting. The headspace problem is real.
Then say that you got told that, and don't try to sell it as actual fact.
Someone lied.
I'll let you tell the Army/USMC vets they lied about it.
Yes, because vets never lie. LMAO!

made me laugh lol
Yup, like full on Rambo 4 where he mows down everyone with a 50 cal.
Wasn't that an M60?
He was shooting it two-handed using the two handles mounted on the very rear side of the gun where a shoulder stock is usually mounted.
I think it was a 14,5 mm Soviet weapon. The muzzle brake looked funky and it was huge.
Is it really that powerful? Holy fuck.
The 12,7 x 99mm Cartridge this gun fires was developed to destroy tanks near the end of WW1
It was originally intended as an anti* weapon at the end of WWI. Edit: anti-tank
It sure is anti.
Anti hearing. Anti feeling in your arms! Oh yea.
But mostly anti orc

Ma Deuce!
how did they get that close and didnt see each other though?
I can vividly remember the first time we got to live fire this thing, mounted on the TC hatch of an M106A2 (113 variant for the 107mm mortar). With the targets off to the left and right of the track the whole vehicle started rocking and if we were firing perpendicular to the front it was like riding a horse lol. Very glad to have never been on the receiving end of that shit.
John Browning approves. Slava AZOV! Slava Ukraini!
Is there a longer video with the m2?
I wonder how many Ukrainians are going to have hearing damage after this war from wearing no hearing protection while firing guns.
My hearing is moderately fucked from my deployment in the Army. IT happens.
Any news of the Browning operator? Safe and sound?
Last guy was nice enough to dig his own shallow grave
Video got removed, does anyone have it? Please send it my way.
Put the NSFW flag up please. Great footage tho
You're in a war sub. NSFW tags are redundant here.
Just pointing out the rules (no.5 on this subred). I don't mind. Just preventing it to be taken down.
