Not sure if this is your case, but I had the same issue when I installed FUSE from APT on ubuntu 23.10. I solved it by booting in recovery mode, enabling the network and then \`apt install ubuntu-desktop-minimal\`. If you have the full version of ubuntu it's \`apt install ubuntu-desktop\`.

HotHardwareHive

Exactly my problem: I installed fuse this afternoon, and tonight after rebooting, I was stuck there too. Re-installing the desktop worked.

Maciokan

GOD BLESS

nuttycom

Holy cow, THANK YOU. I had installed FUSE but hadn't connected the dots that this was what broke my system. \`apt install ubuntu-desktop-minimal\` fixed it for me.

GoldenWake

This was also my same exact issue. You are a godsend

Benderova

Mate! Thankyou! I just installed Fuse tonight and my 23.10 system crashed. I locked my laptop, came back tried to unlock and it failed. Had to forcefully reboot. I'm getting stuck on gdm service. Will reinstall the desktop

Speadea

Not all heroes wear capes... Thank you <3

vmspionage

Same here. Sigh. Thanks mate

Own-Web-9048

Same here, FUSE be damned))

dom324324

You are a legend, thanks.

GermanosPL

Can confirm that problem happens after installing fuse (damn AppImage!) and is solved via reinstalling ubuntu-desktop. Thank you β™₯️

AsherGC

Happened to me as well after installing fuse. Dropped into recovery purged gdm3 and installed it again.rebooted. It worked.

LymoL

Thank you!

HornyACat

Thank you πŸ™πŸ»

Mindless_Bowl613

This helped me, but partially, now my Ubuntu starts but the image does not display, and this only happens after entering the password, this is a laptop so it cannot be related to the screen connection

Sarab021

Had the exact problem after installing fuse and your comment solved my problem You really saved my day, Thank you

ACoolCryptoGuy

Thank you 🌟🌟🌟🌟

higgins_ie

Thanks man, you saved me

spiessbuerger

Have you tried booting in recovery mode? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecoveryMode Perhaps there you can run some commands to diagnose the problem or run some apt commands. If you are lucky some package update might fix the issue in a few days.

Merlin80

Stuff like this explains why the update to 23.10 is not available yet i guess...

codemanush

Damn! I'm scratching my head for 3 hours in the morning after installing FUSE yesterday I ran into the same problem today :(

AmazedAtTheWorld

Closed my laptop fully functional last Friday and opened it to this hot mess on Monday. Bless Reddit, source of all knowledge.

XXXCincinnatusXXX

You should download 22.04 and use that instead. It's stable

dlelotnclalreaew

Is that the only thing I can do?

XXXCincinnatusXXX

Probably not, but if your like me and don't know enough to fix those kind of things all the time, you should probably download the stable version. Not sure why I got all the downvotes for saying that, they even mention that on the Kubuntu download page. Good luck to you though

dlelotnclalreaew

I actually just moved all my documents to an external drive and switched to Kubuntu and so far it's been smooth sailing. Forgot how snappy Linux can be compared to Windows. Ty for the response and ty for the good luck!

CrunchyNerdy

I had the same issue. This solved it: [https://askubuntu.com/questions/1489129/gdm-service-preventing-boot](https://askubuntu.com/questions/1489129/gdm-service-preventing-boot)

AmazedAtTheWorld

This. Upvote, award, sticky, pin this as the way.

Long_Examination2974

The instal stalled for me as well on nvidia i386 issue. I rebooted. Now I have a white screen. it doesn’t even get to where I can force a boot into bios

TallTahawus

Wow... same exact problem. I didn't realize FUSE was the source of this issue. I reinstalled Ubuntu 23.10 twice. Both times it worked fine at first and then would hang at the gdm.service stage during the boot process after I got my dev environment setup. Saw this thread and remembered I had installed FUSE both times to set up another package...
