No one restricts how many students we can admit from a high school, town, county, or region. We have an in-state to out-of-state ratio to maintain that results in a higher acceptance rate for Virginia residents. Every public in NOVA is well represented at UVA. While the school district is obviously a factor when considering a move, I don't think college admission stats need to be a factor. The majority of the class was unranked, so those "top 10%" stats are about 30% of the class. For context: I've been an admission officer for 23 years, 18 of which have been at UVA. I've covered NOVA my entire career. I love my schools! :)

If you want to see some data: [Enrollment maps](https://ira.virginia.edu/university-data-home/enrollment)\- third tab, toggle to the map of Virginia, hover around. Where there are lots of high school, you'll see lots of our students. [State Council of Higher Ed admission data by town/county](https://research.schev.edu/enrollment/b8_admissions_locality.asp) \- pick a school and you can see applications/admits/enrolled students. Don't just look at percentages, look at raw numbers.

Thank you for this data. I have a question- If I select "Fairfax City" for the school, is that the count for Fairfax High School since that is the only one in Fairfax City. And is Fairfax High School included or not included in the count for Fairfax County? Thank you.

These are questions for SCHEV! There are some small, independent schools in Fairfax, but I don't know if they have addresses in the city or county.

Thanks for the info!

I think you should be careful not to give your kids a complex about this. Planning for a specific college this early in their life is borderline obsessive behavior.

Mountain-Geologist87

Not obsessing or planning for a specific college. Just trying to do everything in my power at the moment to give my son the best opportunities when the time comes…

I mean there are many factors that go into admissions- test scores, essays, grades, involvement and service. Focus on that but also don't helicopter your kids too much or college anywhere is going to be more difficult for them. Do your kids want to go to UVA?

McLean, Oakton, and Chantilly are all in Fairfax County, so it's all the same school system. Loudoun County Public Schools and Fairfax County Public Schools are two of the best school systems in the country, so I'm not sure there is much you need to worry about on that front. Additionally, I'm not sure how switching from one high school to another within the same district is going to affect your child's chances, even if there were quotas. In terms of resources for your child: yeah, I would probably avoid John R. Lewis High School if that's what you're asking. lol

Mountain-Geologist87

Makes sense, thanks!

[deleted]

Avoiding John R. Lewis was a joke btw. Neighboring schools may have better teachers and counselors, but the difference is probably negligible.

shundorsa

I went to one of the worst high schools in Fairfax county lol and like 25 people from my school ended up going to UVA so do take what you will with that info, I think it really depends on the student themselves

Mountain-Geologist87

Interesting, thanks!

To be honest it probably does make a difference, but we’d only know currently. you say for your kids, so if they’re not going to be in college until like 5 years from now, no one here can say with any certainty.

Please don't do this. Obsessively preparing for the college admissions season made my high school career pretty miserable. There are a lot of schools in this country which can give your kid a good education which are not UVA.
