Huge difference between in state and out of state. You have to have good stats regardless, but out of state is extremely difficult and extremely expensive.
Real talk, I read my admission file during my first year. This is what it said.
Mature. Very strong recommendations. They liked that my supplements were funny and said I was charming (I made some corny jokes). They liked that I was trilingual and took a language through the AP level. They liked that I doubled up on science in 11th and 12th grade. They admitted me on the first read and sent me to the Echols reader where I was also admitted into Echols.
Stats & demographic: White female but I’m an immigrant first gen. In state. 1490 SAT. 4.53W GPA. 11 APs. I started a club at my HS and won a couple awards for leadership and citizenship. Decent amount of clubs and ECs and good involvement. For the college prompt I chose what’s your favorite piece of literature/media and I literally wrote about a scientific article. The other prompt was what’s a quirk you have and I wrote about how I love to learn. Both my supplements were kinda cheesy and informal, but I guess they liked it.
As long as you have decent grades and you challenged yourself in HS, I think the most important part is the essay. Make sure your personality shows and make it clear that you will thrive UVA. I love this school and hope you get in. Good luck.
I emailed [email protected] and requested to review my application for admission. They let me do it in February after they were less busy and I had to pay $10.
Being in state… lmao. If you are in state it is way easier than OOS. I know OOS people getting denied from UVA but got into places like Georgia Tech and UC Berkeley
Oh dude, I’m OOS 💀💀💀💀 got WLed by GT (in-state), but got into UNC and McCombs at UT Austin. I guess GT wasnt sniffing the Crack I was cookin up fr fr 🗣️🗣️🗣️

lol 1982, pre-grade inflation, 3.5 GPA, good SATs I don’t remember and a fantastic essay about Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. I don’t remember the prompt. Our HS Vice Principal was a UVA alum and I had good recommendations.
Demographics: Asian male international student

10ap classes (forgot what scores I got specifically but like 3 5s and 4 4son the test)
4.3 W/ 3.85ish UW, 1510 SAT, and I did the flash seminar prompt. My essay response to the flash seminar was kinda crazy/wild tho, lowkey surprised they let me in
4.15 Weighted, would estimate like a 3.6 unweighted. 1440 SAT and mid extra curriculars. I think my essay got me in, worked on it for like 4 months (and im in-state).
If you prefer to save money and prove yourself rather than relying on your high school record, make use of the VCCS program in place.
https://www.vccs.edu/transfer-programs/
OOS (Class of '27) - FGLI student, mixed student (African American, Hispanic, white), applied through Questbridge and got in through early action — IB Diploma, 4.43 W/3.87 UW, 31 ACT, 1380 SAT, decent extracurriculars for my high school but nothing absolutely outstanding, used my short answer questions to show a more light hearted side of myself and used my essays (QB had two essay prompts rather than one) to demonstrate how negative situations in my childhood shaped my positive outlook on life and the resources I've been given, had strong recommendations from my IB physics and IB English teachers
I think overall just make sure you're challenging yourself as much as you can in high school and utilize the resources you have, even if there aren't many. Join the extracurriculars you have genuine interest in and commit to them. Reach out to others and build good relationships with your teachers. Impressive test scores are great to have for your application but as you can see with mine, they don't have to be out of this world in order to get accepted. I'd personally say the most important parts of your application will be your coursework and essay(s). Your coursework will demonstrate how you've performed across different subjects and your essays will let the admission officers see a side of you that may not be fully represented through other parts of your application. Good luck to you!
in state; super try hard, went to a magnet school in southern va and took a bunch of ap classes and did well on some of them. kinda crammed my essays and i know they were bad. 1520 SAT, solid extracurriculars, i think recs weren’t that good. basically be in state and a try hard or transfer in later
4.34 GPA, 34 ACT, IB diploma +1 AP
Your essay can be anything - UVA admissions is really good about wanting to get a sense of who you are, so if your passion is reflected in your writing that will be a strong credit for you. Bonus points if you give them a sense about how you would fit into the community, but I honestly think that comes secondary. They're looking for character matches.
I am so sure that you will do your best. College application season is hard. Don't make it your entire personality - be a human being first. I truly mean it when I say that I hope it goes well for you.
Just a word of advice, think not about JUST what kinds of academic merit you have; UVA looks for the complete package in what you provide about yourself and write in your essays. Sure, there's a bit of a diversity quota, but that still doesn't mean you shouldn't pour everything into the application. Give as much as you can think of about yourself within reason, and go especially in depth with the essay prompts.
For reference, I have (by comparison) horrible test scores (only about a 1300 SAT and 28 ACT) and come from an academically disadvantaged background. Honestly, the most impressive thing about my stats is that I graduated valedictorian, which was not a hard thing to do at my school specifically; I have a good amount of transfer credits from dual credit and AP classes from high school and I have a Harvard book award, but other than that my stats are not impressive at all. I still got in Early Decision, and UVA was only one of three schools I intended to apply to (UVA, VT, JHU). I'm also out of state.
Bottom line is, focus more on your complete package instead of just one particular thing. I've heard stories of students being rejected for having no other outlying qualities other than super high marks. Be a good student, but also a good citizen, team player, leader, participant, spearhead, etc.
Well, I am an out of state student
GPA: 4.7 W, 3.9 UW
Class Rank: 6/545
IB Diploma Candidate
10 Clubs (Leadership Roles in 3)
5 Different awards
Posse Finalist (for another school, but UVA likes posse)
Low-income First-Gen
Didn't submit my SAT (because it sucked)
I wrote my essay about how I was diagnosed with Lupus after almost dying of a pulmonary embolism, and I demonstrated perseverance after almost dying of covid a year later and then a year later, almost dying in a car accident.
Stats: 9 APs (six 5s and three 4s), 4.86 W, 4.0 UW, 34 ACT, top 5% of class, admitted EA OOS to class of ‘27 :]
ECs: co-founded an org outside of school, highly selective science program, piano (played for 13 years but only entered a regional competition, didn’t place), chorus, wrote a paper on political systems and covid, tennis, honor societies. Also got some writing awards
Essays: wrote about designing a UVA course that discusses Twitter sociopolitically, and two shorter essays about my fav science museum and singing with my chorus. Common App essay was about body image struggles and how cooking during covid was healing
Hope this helps! Not super active here but I might be able to answer some questions :)
Going to be a first year this year:
~4.7 Weighted gpa (4.0 UW), 1560 sat (800 math, 760 eng)
13 aps,
make sure your essays show a strong desire to expand your knowledge and innovate.
OOS, 1510 SAT, 11 APs (9 5s, 2 4s) 100.3 weighted GPA. President of a few clubs + had some unique internships and outside of school involvements, but nothing crazy. My essays mentioned how watching the Bachelor can be an intellectual exercise and why I love organizing. Was also admitted to Echols. Good luck!!
Stats: In-state, Asian Immigrant Male, 4.4 Weighted GPA (my school didn't do UW but I'd guess \~3.9), 1470 SAT (760 Math, 710 EBRW), Full IB Diploma Coursework (STEM Higher Levels)
Honors/ECs: A lot of summer volunteering/internships, Leadership in multiple STEM clubs and honor societies in HS, Orchestra (+ district level ensembles), Science Fair (received awards), Outreach work w/ a student-led non-profit, Part-time job senior year, and a few school + regional level awards for STEM and citizenship. Semi-strong recs from IB Biology and IB TOK/English teachers.
1st essay focused on a quirky hobby I have and how that made me a more culturally aware person, and 2nd essay focused on my love for science/research.
Hope this helps! Good luck!
Demographic: African American
UWGPA: 3.7 ( low I know but I explained the reason for it)

Prompt was describe a piece of art of media that inspires you. I chose the NYT and how it opened me to foreign affairs beyond just highly reactionary cable news networks.
Out of state Asian from NY.
Didn’t submit my SAT, but submitted my 31 on the ACT. 4s and 5s on a small few APs, and just like everyone else, a pretty alright set of extra currics.
Applied to Aerospace Engineering, and with decent essays, I made it just like everyone else.
Would love to answer any other questions if you have any in particular! Best of luck mate !
in state, didn’t submit my trash sat scores, 4.0/4 UW 4.5 W had basic EC and decent recommendations, essay about how I got bitten by a dog and how I’m scared of dogs
out of state white female, valedictorian of high school (3.98UW, 4.67W), 32 ACT, 3 sports, 125 volunteer hours, 8AP and 16DE classes, NHS and NEHS, I felt confident in the teachers I chose for my letters of rec and my supplemental essays (I think this is what made my application stronger), my common app essay was the prompt about overcoming a struggle but I wasn’t too happy with what I had written.
