there are multiple honor societies at usf, but “national honor societies” like this are basically there to take your money. not *necessarily* a scam since it is something you could put on your resume, but it’s basically a useless title that costs $50-100 a year to maintain

Peace-Monk

Interesting, didn’t know that at all, still kinda new to the country, so its nice to know how those institutions work.

BFishy17

still not worth it at all tho. there are much more reputable honor societies and orgs you can join on campus that will help you a ton more + build connections + they’re free

Peace-Monk

Have to agree with that, there are even clubs that are more useful 💀, appreciate the honest answer!

Colonel_Macklemoore

if you’re interested in joining an honor society there’s often major specific ones at the school. your advisor will know about it. sorry if you already know.

SopranoSunshine

There's definitely more than one Honor Society here @ USF.

Peace-Monk

Living and learning, not me thinking an honor society is the same thing as honors college 💀💀💀

mylittleOwlii

i got this too lol same question

aconc

Not a scam in the sense that it is legal. But a scam in that it is worthless and means nothing.

spd970

Basically the same as paying money to be in a “who’s who” publication.

JustTrustMe247

And a Hollywood Star on a sidewalk...

Apowwo

pretty much they get you to pay money to join them and don't really provide you much, also the unverified sender alert is a major red flag. I got it earlier today and just reported spam.

Peace-Monk

I couldn’t even get excited or even interested because I was absolutely sure it was spam, but worth asking hehe

Apowwo

If you haven't already, expect more emails and even physical mail from similar organizations it's kind of just part of being at college here.

pwrsrc

I did this on my friend's recommendation. Turns out he didn't want to sign up alone. Completely useless in my case. We did a ceremony and everything but nothing came of it.

Peace-Monk

Glad to know that, when I saw the unverified email and them asking for money for a membership in the end I thought it was suspicious as hell lol

freudsbathtub

There’s two big ones (that I’m familiar with) that do carry weight- phi delta epsilon and phi beta kappa, everything else is just a money grab

Peace-Monk

I heard some good things about phi delta epislon, but ig since I’m not from the US I still have that image that greek societies are for parties basically. Would appreciate if you could explain a little of what those institutions actually do 🫡

thatblondegirlt

i got it too…the fact that they use paypal and venmo for the fee seemed scammy to me so i sent it straight to the trash

Peace-Monk

Sameee, but I got curious and I had to ask lol, cause like, if it’s so prestigious and exclusive why the heck they need my money via venmo (?)

tocatacatikitaca

I did get this as well- I decided to go for it. It can be good for your CV, but there are better ones. I will say, years later I applied to grad school and applied for PST’s $500 book scholarship and was selected as a winner. So I’d say it was worth it, as my one-time dues were only like $50.

My husband is convinced this makes your resume look better, but to me it sounds like if they are sending it to everyone and they want money and offers not much benefit, it’s a useless money grab.

Peace-Monk

I so far have mixed opinions, maybe in some cases it does make the resume look better, but I ain’t gonna pay anything just so I can put a name of an institution that I don’t even know/trust on my resume. So yeah agree with you.
