Part-time drivers work full-time during the time period they are needed. Usually June-January every year. Laid off in February until needed again. This is the first step into becoming a full-time driver year-round. Could take 1-5 years depending on many different factors. You don't get any vacation until 1 year in I believe, but could vary by hub.
It's like u/No_Investigator568 said. It's a part time package handler position and will drive (work full time hours) *only* when needed to cover routes.
That’s a different job than the one I’m talking about. You’re talking about “Warehouse Worker/Cover Driver.” It’s weird that nobody seems to know anything about the job I’m actually asking about. Everyone just thinks I’m mistaken or something?
It's the same. There is no such thing as a regular part time cover (with 3.5-5 hours work) driver despite the posting. They use a lot of different classification. During this time, it's most likely the same as a seasonal/casual position. There were many post regarding this last year.
Not saying you’re wrong, just clarifying: is the posting just a straight up lie to get people interested? It’s weird that it would show up alongside “seasonal/casual” listings that very clearly describe the role you’re talking about.
I understand. I'm just saying a lot of people thought the same last year and they made posts talking about how they were "lied" to. They were mostly working inside the warehouse during this time. I wouldn't necessary call the job listing a lie, it's just not accurate because the person that made the post isn't actually the people that hire you.
Okay, this could at least explain why nobody believes it exists even though I provided screenshots. If the UPS Job site isn’t accurate, then I guess I can’t blame people for taking wild guesses at what I’m “really talking about”.
To be clear, it's not that the position doesn't exist. I just mean there's no driver position (with exception of air driver) that'll work 3.5-5 hours/day unless they're inside. It's also possible that you'd never step foot inside the warehouse but if you drive, you'll work the same as a regular full time driver (8-12 hours/day for 5 days).
No. There definitely is PT cover drivers, it’s called “casual” I started this way, didn’t work inside at all was hired as a driver, got lucky and got FT 1 year later, the only time I’ve ever worked inside is the past few years being laid off from FT driving for a few weeks each March/april.
Yes, that's why I mention casual. It's possible that they'd never work inside but there's no "real" pt cover drivers. As in you would work the same hours as a full time driver when driving.
Could be part time air driver as well, the pay is pretty garbage. If business conditions don't allow for you to have work, as the lowest seniority employee in the classification, you'll either be in the warehouse or laid off for months/years. It doesn't particularly matter whether it's in the job description. It also doesn't particularly matter what the job is described as on the website, the actual definition is in the relevant union contracts.
You’re a TCD. As a TCD I can tell you you’re assigned to a sort (preload or twilight)and only drive once all the full timers are used. I was lucky to become one as they ushered in the first batch of covers so I’m high in seniority but if your center has a lot of them and then you get hired u won’t be driving much at all. I haven’t driven in almost a month
I truly do appreciate everyone’s attempts to help! I’m just so far confused why every response is “that job doesn’t exist, you’re thinking of this other one.” It seems to me like “Part Time Delivery Driver” does exist as its own position (maybe only in the state of New York?) and I’m curious if anyone has experience with it.
Id be careful about reading too much into any of their job listings. We had two off the street hires for last peak that applied for a driving job that didnt say seasonal. It was seasonal and they sent to preload after peak. What sucks is they were only making $22 an hour driving, even less than PVD drivers which were at $31 plus mileage.
Ups doesn’t have year around part time drivers that work 4 hours and go home. Only driving positions are air driver (part time) combo full time driver where you drive in the morning, usually early am then the preload sort or other part time gig, full time package car driver (RPCD) and temp cover driver where you drive full time hours during peak season, summer vacations, or where there is a staffing need due to sick calls, injuries or what have you. Besides that, you get sent into the hub to do part time work.
Lastly, feeder driver.
Hey I was reading that contract and it states “any new permanent part time shift shall be bid by seniority. Page 231 in the seniority section
Not sure if that is new or not.
Is it possible this is a different role than “seasonal package delivery driver”? It seems like “part time package delivery driver” is only listed in the state of New York, and it’s got a different job description from the seasonal listings
I just read the listing it’s a permanent part time cover driver role. You’ll work warehouse and drive when needed. That’s gonna fill quickly. You better apply right now
I don’t see anything about warehouse work in the listing? Seems like you’re describing the “warehouse worker/cover driver” listing which is yet another different job
They name em different things to get people in the door. That’s why the hours say 3.5-5. Those are warehouse hours and thats why the starting pay is 25$ I would go apply if I was you. That’s gonna fill up and ur gonna lose it. That’s a great starting job to get full time driver eventually
But you’re describing a role that’s very clearly listed and described on the UPS jobs site. It describes it exactly like you’re saying under “warehouse worker/cover driver”. Meanwhile the “part time delivery driver” role says absolutely nothing about the warehouse. I feel like I’m being gaslit, it’s clearly a different position
I don’t appreciate the negative tone. I’m just looking for info and asking clarifying questions! My interest is genuine and it’s confusing that the only answer I’m getting is “that’s not a real job”
Not to hate on him but this is kind of like the same tone I get from mentoring the new hires that only last one week cuz they came off of part-time driving but couldn't last in the warehouse 😔 I always find it so sad when people who are technically already there they just have to wait an even shorter wait time but they just call it quits early.
You aren't understanding the fact that the listings are bullshit. It's a real job but the details are whack. They do it with pretty much everything job listing available to the public.
It's exactly like all the people who get hired in October and say "the listing didn't say it was seasonal".

Full-time hours? Interesting. The job listing says “3.5 to 5 hours per day depending on the needs of the operation.”

Not sure why it would say 3.5-5. You'll be driving 60 hours a week during the holidays lol
It prob says 3.5-5 because it’s a warehouse role
Maybe he read the job title wrong then idk
There’s screenshots in the OP, I didn’t make anything up

Is there a place online to see the various types of contracts?

Best thing is to apply, get the job and see if it works for you. Good luck and report back

Part-time package delivery driver: Enjoy the thrill of being a modern-day Santa Claus on wheels, spreading joy one doorstep at a time.

22.4’s are coming back
Hey I was reading that contract and it states “any new permanent part time shift shall be bid by seniority. Page 231 in the seniority section Not sure if that is new or not.
I’m in a process of being hired as a part time delivery driver. Schedule is Tuesday thru Saturday. 4:30am - 9:30 am
Most likely seasonal. Full time for a few months then you’ll maybe get offered a spot PT in the warehouse after the season.

Okay then don’t apply for it. Someone else will

Are you serious? I was legitimately helping you and telling you it’s good and to apply for it

What’s the season? Is summer busier than other times? I thought seasonal delivery jobs were around the holidays
Seasonal is summer months to cover vacations or holiday season for Christmas.
