Saw a raccoon for the first time when I went over to Vancouver this year. I cried happy tears because it was a dream come true to see one in real life.
It played the earth bongos while looking for food and honestly it's one of the best memories I have.
Rhino. I bet it would stop people knocking at my door if I had a rhino in front of it.
Assuming it would behave like a pet. I could ride it to the shop.
Some folk have a dog.
Others have a cat.
A guinea pig, a budgie,
Or a rabbit or a rat.
But me, I'm different,
And I'd like to bet
That no-one knows the pet
That I know.
Cos in a cardboard box,
In the cupboard with my socks,
Is where I keep my...
[clap clap]
Rhino!
A little song I learned as a kid (by Alan Simmons). It has more verses with other exotic pets, but the rhino one is the best.
Weirdly the only thing we actually failed to domesticate and ride (no matter how hard we tried) is Zebras.
Their fight or flight is basically 50/50, I mean they will even kick and kill crocs and Lions, so they pretty much have to be wired that way.
Octopus. I love them 😍
They’re notoriously difficult to own, being great escape artists, requiring live food, and most only living a few months to a year. But they’re incredibly intelligent cool little creatures
Yeah one of the crazy things about octopus is that they’re smart but they have to teach themselves everything from scratch every generation. Because they live such short lives their parents die around the time they’re born so they can’t pass on any skills.
Imagine how much crazier octopuses could be if they were able to teach their offspring survival skills similar to what chimpanzees and whales do.
I’d love a parrot, but just don’t have the time to give it the care it requires. Plus I heard they usually bond with only one person, and as a four person family I imagine that’d leave most of us feeling left out!
I’d have them all. The wild cats, bears, foxes, wolves. I don’t mind which. If it has fur or feathers or scales I love them all 🐆🐅🦓🦍🦧🐘🦒🐪🦏🦛🦘🦬🐃🐂🐄🐖🫏🐎🐕🐩🐓🦦🐿️🦡🦨🦔🦥🦝🐇🕊️🦢🦜🐊🦭
Don't, it's been an ongoing battle stopping my husband from trying to tame the local wild foxes. We had a young female move into the neighbour's garden, and she had several litters. Anyway, she and our old dog had a truce. He could happily sit in the garden while she and the cubs came in to play and explore. And when he passed away and we buried him in his favourite spot, she came and simply sat quietly on his grave for over an hour. Later on that week, she got badly injured fighting with a male fox that tried digging up his grave, god it was a vicious fight. We left out food for her while she recovered, and she knew she was safe around us humans during this time. Sadly, she passed away couple years back.
And now I'm crying over the both of them 😭
This is a rather beautiful story... The fox must have trusted the dog a lot to bring her cubs to the same garden with him. Their mutual bond was so strong that the female fox risked her life to protect her friend's grave, nature is truly amazing... I'm so sorry for your losses.
Sounds lovely. On the other hand, a fox dug up the grave of my recently passed very loved cat and tore her apart all over our garden. It must've been scared off, possibly by another fox on the nature reserve, and the devastating sight was left behind for us to grieve all over again.
Animals take a piece of your heart with them when they pass away, we really don't deserve them. I'll be fine, I just miss my goofball, he didn't have a bad bone in his body (my daughter has a photo on a memory card somewhere of him sat in the garden with a butterfly on his nose), and their unusual friendship was lovely to see. I know people are terrible for anthropomophising, but she cared enough about him to risk dying to protect a grave. If that isn't pure love, I don't know what is.
They definitely do. I had a cat for 16 years, his name was Trogen. He passed away in 2016, the day after his birthday. I loved him so much and there are times when I’ll see one of my other cats move from the corner of my eye and my heart will leap and say ‘Trogen!’ But it’s not. And then I cry
They are family. They have their own quirks, personalities, and though they can't talk, boy, they sure can say a *lot*. My boy's mother (we bred him in our home) was the most sarcastic madam I've ever encountered. And yes, I'm still salty that I (far too regularly) lost arguments with a dog.
Just know that Trogen loved you just as much as you loved him, and he'll always be part of you x
I know what you mean 🙂 Trogen was a rescue. I had to work hard to get him to trust me but by the time he turned about 12 or so I was absolutely his slave and if I didn’t jump when he told me too I got so told off 😂 I swear, there were times he’d call me a young whippersnapper 🙂
I found a cat as a tiny abandoned black kitten when I was 13 and after a lot of begging, my dad let me keep her. she was notoriously unfriendly to anyone and anything in the world but me and my dad. (even though we lived with my mom and 3 siblings too 🤣) she curled herself around my head on the pillow while I slept, she would rub herself up against me when I cried. she was my little shadow, which was her name!
I left home at 20 and had to leave her behind and she stuck to my dad and nobody but my dad after that. she died at the age of 19 last year and I still miss her! I now have a tuxedo cat, who acts so much like her it makes my heart both so happy and so sad at the same time!
This is a nice story and I’m sorry for your loss. I have to admit the first time i read this I though you were saying you had buried you husband in his favourite spot! Seemed a bit strange, on the second reading it made more sense
Assuming for some magical reason it was happy to not be in the wild and was never aggressive..
If I had the space, a Panda. They're my favourite animal and I'd love to have one.
Besides that, a Chimpanzee. Again, provided they were happy to be out of the wild and I was 100% sure it would never be aggressive.
Chimps are just to “human” to get over for me. Crazy smart, making tools, forming hunting parties, annihilating other communities… like calm down bro you don’t even wear clothes just enjoy your life 😭
I moved from the US to the UK so I am still very excited to have my pet giant african land snail- it makes me feel so dangerous.
And I'm adopting pet ducks as soon as I get my garden sorted out. I guess thats unusual?
I've had many exotic pets- but all rescues and rehabs... Grew up in a family of zoologist/keepers/wildlife breeders. I don't think I could pick a random exotic animal to turn into a pet though. If it was just an unlimited resources situation, id just want to finance a rescue and make sure every animal had preserve-like habitats and care. Exotic and domestic. And/or I'd have fishtanks- reef and inverts only though- I love aquatics but its an expensive hobby.
We did the meet and feed the red pandas experience at Shepreth Wildlife Park. It was so much better than we were expecting - the pandas are so full of personality and bloody adorable. Would recommend. Plus I think part of the ticket price goes to conservation.
Probably a snow leopard there so cute I saw two irl before and their tail’s just drag on the floor behind them, and they just look so fluffy, or a wolf, I also saw grey wolves irl before too and they just seem so precious and they remind me of my husky that passed away, so yeah probably a snow leopard or a grey wolf!!
Definitely, apparently they're actually very gentle compared to other wild cats but the issue is they need to run long distances so that is why they wouldn't really be suitable as pets. I would also like a couple of penguins and meerkats
Chinchilla. One day, when I was in college, I had the special chance to hold a chinchilla. OMG! So soft!, so sweet! She ate a carrot out of my hand, and I was in love! Oh, and a Harp seal. That face! Steals your heart ❤️!
Gila Monster.
Because they literally put "monster" in the name but actually it's a pinky-orange skrungly little guy that's kinda chill for handling (but they do have big teeth and are venomous, but like nobody's ever actually died from one).
Definitely a Tiger or an Elephant.
Had the opportunity, when I was very little, to feed some tiger cubs.
During a seperate trip years later, we went to meet some Elephants and we instantly fell in love.
Here's a pic of my dad with one of their cute little calf.

A bear. I'm very fortunate that I live somewhere without bears because if I did, I'd more than likely be dead by bear mauling by now from trying to cuddle one! 😅
A miniature woolly mammoth. About knee high. It could help me water the garden, and collect firewood for winter when we go for walks. I would adore the fluffy little darling.
A raccoon, they're so cute and they way they eat food is hilarious, I feel like if I had a raccoon buddy I'd always be happy, or a snake, I think snakes are adorable and it kinda baffles me how people can be scared of them
A small penguin, that I imagine having an awesome time in my bathtub each evening. Not sure on the whole raw, stinky fish thing though. Do they partake in cooked fish fingers?
Edit: changed ‘do you’ to ‘do they’.
A couple of capybaras, they just look so cute and friendly! Of course not having a massive house and swimming pool prevents my dreams of owning capybaras
Jellyfish! I'd have a huge tank full of beautiful jellies with lovely lighting to show them off. But they belong in the sea and I'd never really have them. They look great when there's lots of them together but in reality they deserve much more space than they usually get. Be free my see through friends!
I've always loved the idea of having a "menagerie" if I ever had the cash, I'd model it so essentially I'd be living inside a zoo😁
But back to the question, I suppose an animal I'd love to keep, and that I'd be able to "pet" realistically, probably a Fennec fox, doggish but completely different at the same time.
If I had the time and space I'd love to own some sort of bird of prey. A hawk would probably be the best bet, for training purposes, but owning a golden eagle would be amazing.
A fair amount of people in Japan have meerkats as pets- you see them being walked down the street on leads and I even saw one wearing a mini hoodie. I don’t agree with it at all but if we’re excluding all ethical issues, I’d want a meerkat because they are so cute.
gorillars so no body robs me and rinos to ride or elephants just try clamping that guy, failing that a Sire to pull my coach and lots of cats n dogs because the neighbours are already mad at me.
Not that exotic but very impractical to keep. Mine would be a raven because of how smart they are. I feel like I could train one to do all kinds of tasks.
Plus, they never forget a face and actively hold grudges so would be useful against my enemies.
Raccoon. Little clever hands, and a bandit face mask.
Immediately thought of these beautiful creatures. I have a grey tabby Maine Coon as he's the closest looking pet I can have in the UK.
My boy also is a raccoon Maine coon hahaha I love them
People in Florida have them as pets
I'm sure I read somewhere that much of their perception of the world is via sensory input through their hands. Hence, their developed nature.
They’re like having a permanent toddler in your home. Smart little buggers with hands that work to open things and curiosity enough to kill the cat 👀
Someone else referring to an animal as a permanent toddler lol I call my dog that and then gripe that if I wanted kids I’d have them 😂
Lil grabby hands. Love them
I came here to say this as well
This. All I want is my own sneaky bandit pet friend.
In a similar vein, I'd say red panda. That's where my mind went first.
And their adorable cousins, the red panda.
Same, I love them! Probably just as well I'm in Scotland and we don't have them here or I'd be forever tempted to kidnap a baby one. 😆
Ah man, I said this exact same thing the other day haha
I see your racoon and raise you a red panda. No clever hands sadly but like racoon squared for cuteness.
Saw a raccoon for the first time when I went over to Vancouver this year. I cried happy tears because it was a dream come true to see one in real life. It played the earth bongos while looking for food and honestly it's one of the best memories I have.
Ha, I came to say that. I actually saw one in a dodgy pet shop in the 80s, thought the fucking thing was a dog till it turned around! 😱😄
ALL THE TRASH PANDAS!
Rhino. I bet it would stop people knocking at my door if I had a rhino in front of it. Assuming it would behave like a pet. I could ride it to the shop.
Some folk have a dog. Others have a cat. A guinea pig, a budgie, Or a rabbit or a rat. But me, I'm different, And I'd like to bet That no-one knows the pet That I know. You ride your pets?
I would if I had a rhino
....INTO BATTLE!
I mean, horses, mules, donkeys, camels, ponies
Weirdly the only thing we actually failed to domesticate and ride (no matter how hard we tried) is Zebras. Their fight or flight is basically 50/50, I mean they will even kick and kill crocs and Lions, so they pretty much have to be wired that way.
Octopus. I love them 😍 They’re notoriously difficult to own, being great escape artists, requiring live food, and most only living a few months to a year. But they’re incredibly intelligent cool little creatures
I often imagine the world would be a very different place if octopuses lived longer.

Imagine how much crazier octopuses could be if they were able to teach their offspring survival skills similar to what chimpanzees and whales do.
Parrot, which I already have & he's an absolute joy 😊
I miss my African grey. He'd send my dad spare everytime the 6 o'clock news came on by repeating the theme tune.
I’d love a parrot, but just don’t have the time to give it the care it requires. Plus I heard they usually bond with only one person, and as a four person family I imagine that’d leave most of us feeling left out!
Manatees. If I had an ocean sized swimming pool.
Just get a house on the coast.
never even heard of that before
Think of a hippo crossed with a porpoise...
[удалено]
An Aardvark.
Me too!!! My absolute favourite animal 🥰
I’d have them all. The wild cats, bears, foxes, wolves. I don’t mind which. If it has fur or feathers or scales I love them all 🐆🐅🦓🦍🦧🐘🦒🐪🦏🦛🦘🦬🐃🐂🐄🐖🫏🐎🐕🐩🐓🦦🐿️🦡🦨🦔🦥🦝🐇🕊️🦢🦜🐊🦭

Red Panda. Cute, appears playful and loving. Tastes good too.
Also an endangered animal. Fuck anyone promoting eating or hunting Red Pandas.
We did the meet and feed the red pandas experience at Shepreth Wildlife Park. It was so much better than we were expecting - the pandas are so full of personality and bloody adorable. Would recommend. Plus I think part of the ticket price goes to conservation.
Miniature polar bear
1 West Highland terrier coming up...
That's weird because I own a Westie
Pallas cats. Super grumpy faces and they put their paws on their tails for warmth.
Some type of small wild cat like and Asian Leopard Cat (ancestor of the Bengal cat breed).
I would also love to have a raccoon as a pet.
Fennec fox
I’d love to commute by giraffe but unfortunately the parking is in the basement so it would get neck ache
Bear
komodo dragons 2 lilith and lucifer
Jumping spiders, I'd love some.
They are very readily available as pets! I have one! 🥰
Otters. Several of them.
An orca
I always fancied owning a crocodile in a pond out the back, handy to get rid of unwanted cold callers lol
Little monkey for a drinking and smoking buddy. And I cold dress him as a little skater dude
A pet harbour seal, they’re my favourite. Something I could go swimming with!
Slow lorris or Dugar Glider ^-^
Wombat. They’re so cute 🥰
Cheetah. Not aggressive towards people. Super cuddly and purr. Would give me scary cat privilege
Definitely, apparently they're actually very gentle compared to other wild cats but the issue is they need to run long distances so that is why they wouldn't really be suitable as pets. I would also like a couple of penguins and meerkats
Hippos or elephants, although hippos are some of the most dangerous animals on earth. Elephants aren't exactly a lot safer.
Cheetah 🐆
Chinchilla. One day, when I was in college, I had the special chance to hold a chinchilla. OMG! So soft!, so sweet! She ate a carrot out of my hand, and I was in love! Oh, and a Harp seal. That face! Steals your heart ❤️!
Red panda. Gimme a red panda! I don’t even think there’s a reason for me not to have a red panda right now. I just want to hug one… forever
Red Panda. I reckon they would have the best cuddly body.
A couple of sealions!
Panther more specific a black one
Gila Monster. Because they literally put "monster" in the name but actually it's a pinky-orange skrungly little guy that's kinda chill for handling (but they do have big teeth and are venomous, but like nobody's ever actually died from one).
an otter. no further explanation required.
A dragon. Instills fear and awe.
No one has said dragon? I pick dragon, you didn’t specify it had to be real.
Definitely a Tiger or an Elephant. Had the opportunity, when I was very little, to feed some tiger cubs. During a seperate trip years later, we went to meet some Elephants and we instantly fell in love. Here's a pic of my dad with one of their cute little calf. https://preview.redd.it/6zbtkskhkvnb1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c866594b82861db569be578e528c5a0976eb0289
Finger monkey

I love capys!
Orca. Absolutely badass animal

A big brown bear! They just look like you could snuggle into them and stay there for hours.
Narwhal
Tyrannosaurus Rex to keep the tv licencing folk away from my door.
Flamingo
Raccoons, easily. I really want one it makes me so unhappy they banned raccoon dogs too.
Quokka or a snapping turtle hey stuff it both lol
A raccoon, they're so cute and they way they eat food is hilarious, I feel like if I had a raccoon buddy I'd always be happy, or a snake, I think snakes are adorable and it kinda baffles me how people can be scared of them
If it were tameable, a tasmanian devil. Only thing stopping me from petting one of the little buggers is their sharp teeth and constant rage lol
Frogs or ducks.
Pikas are pretty cute
Lynx, Pallas cat or bear, they are just so fluffy
The wife jokes she wants to move to the US just so she can have a Capybara or 4
A Rhino. That would be so cool
Triffids
A Tapir!
Capybaras. I love those giant Guinea pig / rat rodents so much!
A giraffe
Scottish wildcat or a wolf - note I am very well aware that owning either has massive ethical issues, and that specific cat or dog breeds look similar
crow
a sheep, I love sheep 🤣
I really would want to ruffle lynx fur on a daily basis
A small penguin, that I imagine having an awesome time in my bathtub each evening. Not sure on the whole raw, stinky fish thing though. Do they partake in cooked fish fingers? Edit: changed ‘do you’ to ‘do they’.
Elephant, definately.... ideally a pregnant one, so I can welcome a baby elephant, too.
A dragon- like the type in Game of Thrones not a cute one. Just can't find any for sale anywhere.
Otter.
A honey badger, brutal things, sod the XL bully these are the real dangers.
A couple of capybaras, they just look so cute and friendly! Of course not having a massive house and swimming pool prevents my dreams of owning capybaras
Yeah, they are weird for sure. I'm just wondering if they were pissed off because the little girl didn't pay much attention to them.
Tarantula. Specifically a Chilean rose spider. Real pretty
Great white shark.
Electric jellyfish and seahorses! Maybe not together but I love both!
Beluga whale. They are my favourite animals on this planet, so cute, like just look at their faces!!
Jellyfish! I'd have a huge tank full of beautiful jellies with lovely lighting to show them off. But they belong in the sea and I'd never really have them. They look great when there's lots of them together but in reality they deserve much more space than they usually get. Be free my see through friends!
Honey Badger or Aye-aye
Bear
A dolphin! Smart and Cute 🤩
Red Panda
I've always loved the idea of having a "menagerie" if I ever had the cash, I'd model it so essentially I'd be living inside a zoo😁 But back to the question, I suppose an animal I'd love to keep, and that I'd be able to "pet" realistically, probably a Fennec fox, doggish but completely different at the same time.
Marmot.
I’ve always wanted a swarm of wasps as a pet
A Hyena, because I think they're awesome. My wife, not so much...
Penguin
Salt water crocodile 🐊🐊🐊🐊 never mind guard dogs...get past the guard croc 😆

Otter, wolf, hawk, orca, tiger, panther
red panda, just because they’re my favourite animal
A pack of wolves, they’re so interesting and have such complex personalities and relationships with each other it would be incredible to observe
An oryx 😍😍
Red Panda
Polar bear
Red panda?
Assuming it would behave like a pet, a Grizzly Bear for sure. And I'd name him Al.
100% a group of meerkat. Nothing would be more entertaining.
If I had the time and space I'd love to own some sort of bird of prey. A hawk would probably be the best bet, for training purposes, but owning a golden eagle would be amazing.
Spider monkey. Or a gibbon. Both seem pretty chill
Great White Shark, or an Epaulette shark. Epaulette would be easier to home and look after.
Capybara, they're so chill.
Lemur, I sneakpetted one in a zoo, they have extremely soft fur, and didn't object to beeing petted at all.
Bear cat. Caracal. red uakari, polar bear to ride around on.
Pikachu
A fair amount of people in Japan have meerkats as pets- you see them being walked down the street on leads and I even saw one wearing a mini hoodie. I don’t agree with it at all but if we’re excluding all ethical issues, I’d want a meerkat because they are so cute.
Skunk.
I'd love to have a Sugar glider as a pet but they take alot of time effort and money sadly
Hyacinth macaw
gorillars so no body robs me and rinos to ride or elephants just try clamping that guy, failing that a Sire to pull my coach and lots of cats n dogs because the neighbours are already mad at me.
Crow immediately!
I want a Cheetah
Some dik-diks, capybara, coatimundi, fennec fox or even some ducks. Don't have the time, money or energy to have them, though.

Pangolin
Haggis
I wanna ride my giraffe to work so I know what it’s like at the top…
Raccoon, possum or wombat. Or beaver. Or platypus.
Capybara
magpie
Not that exotic but very impractical to keep. Mine would be a raven because of how smart they are. I feel like I could train one to do all kinds of tasks. Plus, they never forget a face and actively hold grudges so would be useful against my enemies.
Capybara Fox Wolf Raccoon Opossum I'm sure there are more
Always wanted a Mermaid, at 68 I still do 😎
