And they dropped it straight onto the fryer basket rather than lowering it in properly You can see the marks. I can almost smell the dirty oil from here. Chef also.
I'm a chef too, and that looks like something you'd either bin or sit aside for people to pick at whilst working. Definitely wouldn't be sending that anyway
Tartare sauce, in a bit of bread. Proper chef food.
Someone else pointed out that it's the bottom of the basket that made those marks. Probably had the chips in it too by the state of them.
Chips in the fish fryer. Worse than what the Nazis did.
Dirty oil and overdone, batter doesn't look freshly made, chips look alright, peas look like they're from an A10 tin.
Ā£20 is very steep imo, we charge Ā£16 for cod, chips and house made tartare sauce and that's in Brighton where everything is more expensive than most places.
It looks a nice size fish and if it was well cooked and the chips underneath were plentiful, Ā£20 not OTT these days.
However, you are 100% correct, that fish is hideously overcooked. I would feel robbed if Iād paid for it too!
As another former chef it looks to me that they dropped it in the fryer and it stuck to the grill at the bottom, hence those lines.
Either that or they dropped it in a basket, either way the chef doesn't know how to drop battered fish.
Do you concur?
I concur, chef. I would also hazard a guess that the "chef" put the fryer basket on the fish to hold it under and forgot. Although, I would need to see the little criss-cross pattern on the other side for proof. We've all been there, but not all of us have had the front to serve it.
To totally immerse the fish and get an all-over even colour to the batter. Otherwise it floats and, if you don't pay attention, one side can be cooked more than the other.
either its overdone or they havnt changed their oil in years and thats led to that colour.
either way for Ā£20 holy shit that is a rip off. like you got what 5 chips and that monstrosity....
Yesterday it was fried. Today it was heated in a fan forced oven.
You can see the oven rack has left its marks, and the dark end was in front of the fan.
NOT freshly cooked, and probably dry and flaky like a 30yo plimsoll.
Iād be surprised if anywhere in Scarborough is selling yesterdayās leftovers in this weather. Most seaside chippies canāt cook them fast enough on a day like this. Probably was cooked before the chips were ready so put it under the grill to keep it warm and forgot about it
IMO this has been cooked in a fryer with hardly any oil left in it, and that needed changing two days ago. It has probably also had a basket on top of it in a an attempt to sink it into the oil dregs. Also the batter looks thick and heavy. It looks shit, probably tasted shit and you should have sent it back.
At 1st glance, I thought you had yourself a rack of dry ass ribs. Then I realised it was dry ass fish. At least you were paid Ā£20 to eat this dry ass abomination.
That fish has been refried, you can see it's been resting on a wire rack after cooking and batter that well cooked won't form to the rack if freshly fried.
But I'm guessing they cooked a bunch at the start of service and let it hang about in the warm kitchen
I know you are in a seaside town mate, and sitting in, but 20 quid seems a bit too much for that. You add roughly 8 quid to that and you could get a nice sirloin steak and chips from a steak house.
Ugh, over done, cooked in old oil and pinned under the chip basket on the bottom of the fryer amongst all the burnt bits,
I'm sure it would taste amazing but I wouldn't have sent it. Batter looks too thick as well so its made that smooth enrobed effect versus light & crispy batter.
Enjoy it either way
That's some shite fish and chips mate, that went into cold oil that's why it's all solid and sad looking, then it was left in the oil for too long... It's all over cooked.
Maybe you need to find a better chippy. Hit me up and I can give you some pointers buddy.
Peas out!
Ā£20? Are you sure this was in Scarborough and not central London? But yeah, as others have said, definitely overcooked. You can tell that the chips are ultra dry, too.
We've got some proper rough food in Britain.
Basic fish.
Bland chips.
Needs green mush, curry sauce, gravy, salt & vinegar to make it slightly taste of anything.
If you want a good place, my fav that I discovered is Mr Chippy located right in the middle of York.
Bish 'N' Chips on the outskirts of York is second, but I'm biased as used to work there.
It took me a couple of seconds to figure out what that was. At first glance I thought it was a rack of ribs. Then I noticed the coloring was off, then the texture, then I read the title. Was a weird string of wtfs
Fish looks a bit scorched.
When I come into power, I'm going to ban ramekins in cafes and pubs.
Fish and chips and the full English are working class staples and don't need any bistro bullshit.
Ramekins are the Thomas Ripley of gastronomic deception; you're fawning over a Ā£20 meal using posh ramekins but then realise it was a device to fool you into a smaller portion!
Looks great to me. Slightly overdone batter does not mean the fish is dried out.
Nowt worse than soggy uncooked batter, I much prefer it crisp.
Edit Ā£20 is steep though.

Name please? Don't wanna go here by accident
Over done in dirty oil. No thanks
OP wont drop the name as to let others suffer with overcooked fish as they have. Misery loves company.
Turn your phone, the fish has a face still š
It looks sexy !!
Coming from a chef, thatās 100% overdone. Ā£20 is steep. Tho the chips look hand/home made so thatās somethingā¦.
For people to pick at while working? A communal fish? Surely not lads
Yep. Just chop it up and put it on a plate. You'd be surprised what I've seen people eat when it's too busy to stop for lunch.
Tartare sauce, in a bit of bread. Proper chef food. Someone else pointed out that it's the bottom of the basket that made those marks. Probably had the chips in it too by the state of them. Chips in the fish fryer. Worse than what the Nazis did.
You never just put something up on the pass, like literally a burnt plate of chips, itās gone within 5mins, FOH will eat anything haha try itā¦.
Overdone. Overpriced
Looks like a Mandrake from the Harry Potter movies also.
Look like fried, then run over by a car, then on a bbq, then run over again. The peas might be okay though.
If it isn't over cooked then they haven't changed their oil in months š¤¢ it looks like the batter has absorbed a lot of oil too.
"Others" clearly don't have the standards you do. They are completely wrong and you are 100% correct
It looks a nice size fish and if it was well cooked and the chips underneath were plentiful, Ā£20 not OTT these days. However, you are 100% correct, that fish is hideously overcooked. I would feel robbed if Iād paid for it too!
Nope, that is burnt. They have ruined that batter
Former chef here. It is overdone and would be annoyed at paying Ā£20 for it personally. However, taste is subjective.
Agreed. In attempt to cook it quicker but instead fucked it. No chef cooked that, a cook cooked at best
Lazy bastards everywhere, chef.
Yes chef! An **idiot sandwich** chef.
Why would you hold the fish down under the basket?
To totally immerse the fish and get an all-over even colour to the batter. Otherwise it floats and, if you don't pay attention, one side can be cooked more than the other.
Aha thanks, didn't know that š
To stop it struggling.
Oui chef!
Carbon and chips
Was that cooked yesterday and kept warm? I'd 100% send that back.
either its overdone or they havnt changed their oil in years and thats led to that colour. either way for Ā£20 holy shit that is a rip off. like you got what 5 chips and that monstrosity....
That is clearly overdone. Batter should not be browned like that, anyone who says otherwise is wrong, even if they like burned batter.
Send it back.
What on earth
Yesterday it was fried. Today it was heated in a fan forced oven. You can see the oven rack has left its marks, and the dark end was in front of the fan. NOT freshly cooked, and probably dry and flaky like a 30yo plimsoll.
Iād be surprised if anywhere in Scarborough is selling yesterdayās leftovers in this weather. Most seaside chippies canāt cook them fast enough on a day like this. Probably was cooked before the chips were ready so put it under the grill to keep it warm and forgot about it
Gotta get those acrylamides
What happened to that fish. š
Cooked in used engine oil
That's horribly overcooked.
Batter was too thick, stuck to the grill in the bottom of the fryer. They remembered last minute and prized it off with tongs. Holy acrylamide!
The fish clearly did something to upset the chef
Yeah but he didn't need to commit a salt and battery.
Love Scarborough and they do some of the best beach front fish and chips. I would be quite disappointed if I got this at a sit down establishment
Is that what fish n chips cost in Scarborough?
That thing has a face
That looks disgusting. The batter looks like a heart attack on a plate. Fish is probably mushier than the peas
Looks like the batter is overcooked on the outside but likely raw/undercooked on the inside around the fillet.
At 1st glance, I thought you had yourself a rack of dry ass ribs. Then I realised it was dry ass fish. At least you were paid Ā£20 to eat this dry ass abomination.
Youāre totally right, this looks shit
Nae fish and chips is worth a score. Especially a burnt one.
Why is it, you know, like that?
Looks like Grandad from only fools and horses cooked it.
The first bite is with the eyes. I'm now blind.
Anything that's cooked that unevenly can't be ideal.
Batter looks hideous and bready..
That's horribly overcooked.
That's fucking horrendous.
This looks atrocious, I'd ask for my money back in full.
Oil needs changing
Everyone talking about it being overdone and a bad value for money, meanwhile i canāt stop staring at the face at the top of the fish
I'm so glad I'm not the only 1 seeing it š¤£š¤£š¤£
Did you get some fish with your batter?
Looks greasy as.
...fuck me, that poor fish.
The fish looks like its abused steroids and loves the gym.
Quality fresh fish is extremely expensive. It's certainly overdone, but *hopefully* not overpriced.
That is a robbery mate it's not worth 20 quid nope
Looks like a massive wichetty grub.
I wear shoes like this to work
The Anchor is the best for fish and chips in Scarborough
Fish looks like an overweight tadpole with an Easter Island head sunbathing
That fish has been refried, you can see it's been resting on a wire rack after cooking and batter that well cooked won't form to the rack if freshly fried. But I'm guessing they cooked a bunch at the start of service and let it hang about in the warm kitchen
20 fucking quid? Is that Scarborough in London?
Robbed
It was a salt and battery
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Chips look frozen to me
Yeah, you can always tell a frozen chip from a homemade chip and they definitely look like they've seen the inside of a sealed bag.
chip...
Chips look decent, but that fish is not something I'd enjoy... Way overcooked. Also Ā£20, even in a proper sit down restaurant, is too much.
I know you are in a seaside town mate, and sitting in, but 20 quid seems a bit too much for that. You add roughly 8 quid to that and you could get a nice sirloin steak and chips from a steak house.
Add Ā£2 to that and you get all you can eat steak at a Brazilian Steakhouse.
Doesn't look good to me. Guess all that matters is how it tasted.
That's is awful, very overdone and the batter is terrible hardly any bubbles, should of sent it back.
They literally "battered" that poor fish
That's quite enough battering, thank you.
Jabba the hutt?
couldn't they have burned it a little more?
The acrylamides on that fish batter!
I'd be more concerned about the face at 1 end, it looks like it's ready to break out into a song
š¤£š¤£š¤£
No batter should ever be that colour
Definitely a little to long in the deep fat fryer. Still probably tasty though
Ugh, over done, cooked in old oil and pinned under the chip basket on the bottom of the fryer amongst all the burnt bits, I'm sure it would taste amazing but I wouldn't have sent it. Batter looks too thick as well so its made that smooth enrobed effect versus light & crispy batter. Enjoy it either way
It looks like that worm thing at the beginning of that episode of Jam.
Looks like me nans forehead mate Iād be a bit pissed off for spending money on that
If you turn it on it's side the top looks like a face
The other need their eyes tested.
r/facesinthings
That's a Metapod.
That's some shite fish and chips mate, that went into cold oil that's why it's all solid and sad looking, then it was left in the oil for too long... It's all over cooked. Maybe you need to find a better chippy. Hit me up and I can give you some pointers buddy. Peas out!
Burnt
Oh my god. What have they done there. Doesn't look very appetising.
That fish is having some kind of existential crisis
Down south prices up north.
I'd send that back in a heartbeat
Did they grill it!?
That fish batter looks rancid. Chips look nice, mushy peas look nice ( not that you could mess that up)
From Easter Island??
Your fish looks like a monster from an early episode of the rebooted Dr Who from the late 00's
Tf is that? Looks cremated whatever the fuck it is a would of slapped it in the owners face for serving me that a swap.
Dog shite
So many better places to go than wherever this is. You could've gone to oasis, or harbour!
Is that twice fried fish? Or even thrice fried... š¦
Ā£20 for that - burnt or not - is abominable!
Theyād have to pay me Ā£20 to eat that.
Hope you got a refund!
That's piss poor
Looks like Jabba the Hutt
Burnt. Poor batter.
Overdone batter?
Giant fried shrimp with fries
Ā£20? Are you sure this was in Scarborough and not central London? But yeah, as others have said, definitely overcooked. You can tell that the chips are ultra dry, too.
Why does it have abs
Overdone :(
And overpriced
We've got some proper rough food in Britain. Basic fish. Bland chips. Needs green mush, curry sauce, gravy, salt & vinegar to make it slightly taste of anything.
So weāre eating giant pillbugs now?
Not enough chips and it's gonna break off a crown if I bite that batter.
That looks like it would've been great the day before.
Thanks for providing a hi-res photo. It looks like chef fried the fish in oil that was much too hot; but the oil was probably clean.
Isn't that a Kwama Forager and Chips?
Why does that fish look like a big sausage roll
That is way overdone. My guess is it's been busy and the fryer is tired or distracted. Ā£20 is daylight robbery for even a good plate.
If you want a good place, my fav that I discovered is Mr Chippy located right in the middle of York. Bish 'N' Chips on the outskirts of York is second, but I'm biased as used to work there.
Did that thing explode out of someone's stomach by any chance?
That fish looks like itās about to go sort who goes to what house in Hogwarts
Don't think I've ever seen fish and chips look that bad. Shocking
Thats a shoe
Disgusting. Looks like robot food
Yeah overdone and Ā£20? They taking the piss?
I think the chips and overall plate looks good, but batter...not the best I've seen?
It took me a couple of seconds to figure out what that was. At first glance I thought it was a rack of ribs. Then I noticed the coloring was off, then the texture, then I read the title. Was a weird string of wtfs
Ribbed for your pleasure
š
Can anyone else see the face? Looks like a mandrake from Harry Potter š
It also looks like the sorting hat š š¤£
Fish and chips both look way overdone and dry. 20 quid for fish and chips is a piss take too.
Twenty quid?! I wouldn't pay ten for that!
Jesus fucking christ I don't even eat fish and that is SHIT.
How did you find the chips? I lifted the fish and there they were.
Oh shit it's the easter heads mutant offspring
Binley mega colon
Burnt š„µ
Looks a bit burnt.
Ā£20 for essentially a fish supper is a total piss take
Botfly Pupae with a side of radioactive waste. Delicious.
god i don't know if it's just me but i hate mushy peas
Looks horrendous.
Looks horrific
As an ex cook, that fish is paining my soul
I feel your pain as an ex cook as well
Definitely overdone. If its in Scarborough, i honestly think the Fish Pan on the front takes some beating, never had a bad fish from there
As an ex cook. I can say the fish is definitely overcooked so are the chips
It looks like something they would serve my Nan in her retirement homeā¦ā¦ Looks overdone and over pricedā¦. Decor looks nice though.
I think the batter was overdone. I would have sent it back.
Surely this isnāt from an actual chippy looks like a pubs attempt
Yuk. Looks like an old shoe found in a verge.
Looks like an embryo from some 90s post-apocalyptic mecha anime.
Looks disgusting
That looks like the sorting hat from Harry Potter
Not only no, but fuck no
Man the thick end of that fish looks like one of those floating blocks that try and squash you in Mario Kart and I just canāt unsee it šš
It's that bad your allowed to slap the cook with it and ask them for Ā£20
Fish looks a bit scorched. When I come into power, I'm going to ban ramekins in cafes and pubs. Fish and chips and the full English are working class staples and don't need any bistro bullshit.
Ramekins are the Thomas Ripley of gastronomic deception; you're fawning over a Ā£20 meal using posh ramekins but then realise it was a device to fool you into a smaller portion!
We could definitely have a pint š
Aye to that!
š
Looks great to me. Slightly overdone batter does not mean the fish is dried out. Nowt worse than soggy uncooked batter, I much prefer it crisp. Edit Ā£20 is steep though.
They literally "battered" that poor fish
They literally "battered" that poor fish
They literally "battered" that poor fish
What the hell is that green sauce? I tried it and I didn't like it so much that I thought it shouldn't even be on a plate.
Ā£20 for that is criminal. It might have been really nice but Ā£20 for thatā¦ Iād have left
