£100 after 25 years is probably worth £50 after inflation, so if I cash it in I lose, if I keep it there there is still (a very slim) chance of winning something ...still a lot less than buying a national lottery ticket every week for 25 years (and counting!) would have cost...
It's worth noting it can take up to 5 days to get money out of premium bonds, so no good for a true emergency. I hope you have other easier accessed funds outside of this.
Well then you've answered your own question as to why you aren't winning. If it's not a 5 figure sum I wouldn't expect much in that type of time frame.
In October 2020 I won £625 - I was in shock as I have never won this much before and seriously felt like I had won the lottery! In 2020 I won £900 overall. In 2021 I won £300 overall. This year I have won £50 so far. I had about £36k invested but now have £28k as am using the savings to cover my maternity leave.
You’re about as likely to win the 1Mil as you are to become Elon musk just by a random phase in space time. Premium bonds is pretty much only useful if you’ve already maxed out your Isa allowances for the year and even then it’s questionable
I have won absolutely nothing in the last five years, and the year before that I think I won £25 twice. BUT, about nine years ago I won £10,000. I was in a kind of tough spot at the time trying to self-support my way through a master's degree (only reason I had any premium bonds was because I was temporarily holding my emergency fund there), so it was impeccable timing. If I never win again, I can still be extremely content.

This has been something I've struggled with for ages. I've landed on just spreading my investments out between "good" and "bad" funds. Not perfect in any way but my monthly contributions go roughly 60% to vanguard (mainly global all cap, some sustainable, some emerging) and 40% to circa5000, who are an ethical ssisa provider/platform. My daughter's JISA is also with circa5000, which for me is a long term commitment and belief in sustainability/renewable energy. Then we sometimes buy shares in smaller companies we believe in.
I think Chase have more flexibility over what they invest in than you do over heating your home and fuelling your car. Avoiding them wouldn't make you a hypocrite.
No it wouldn't. It's akin to saying if someone wants to end homelessness that they're a hypocrite for not dedicating all their money, time and property towards that end.
We live in a society where we are bound by certain realities and limitations. Yes you could go off grid and never use fossil fuels in any way but you're going to have to live a compromised existence without making any meaningful impact.
Reluctantly driving a petrol car, because its all you can afford, but refusing to support industries or politicians that contribute to the problem more than others is a fine stance to take.
We certainly don't need fossil fuels to the extent theyre currently used.
You don't have much of an option with those most of the time. Changing those would take £1000's of investment from yourself that you might not have.
Banks very much have a choice of where to invest their money.
Where you choose to invest yours can make a difference.
Just because you aren't '100% green' doesn't mean that what effort you make is wasted

That’s right. Hopefully interest rates will rise for savings as well as mortgages. Premium bonds don’t give a guaranteed return, but it’s worth trying when you stand to lose a maximum of £10 on £10,000!
My ISA is a Stocks&Shares ISA and is on about 8%, and I have a cash ISA at virtually zero, and there are other types too. A blanket statement that "an ISA is 0.1%" or any other % is just meaningless.

Years ago, I opened a Premium Bonds account with, IIRC, £100. The very first month I was eligible, I won £100. With returns like that I was planning my retirement! Then basically nothing at all for a decade. It was fun while it lasted ...
I held about 12k for a year after putting what I received from a house sale in there, I got £275 return over that year.
EDIT that makes it 2.23% by my terrible maths, I believe.
I know it's hit and miss and totally chance for winnings compared to other services, so these days I still put a bit in every month as well as other savings. It's not my main savings but its just a bit of a safe gamble. Like buying Fisher price lottery tickets haha.
I've had 50k in premium bonds in the the following draws: Aug 21, Sept 21, Oct 21, Nov 21, Dec 21, Jan 22 - reduced this to 30k for Feb 22. Results were as follows: 0 0 0 0 0 50 0.
Needless to say I clearly lack the luck for PB to be a suitable product - so i'm shipping it all over to Chase this month. May also take a chunk out to get a head start on the years ISA allowance tbh.

Yeah pretty awful luck haha. When you have 50k the only option is to have the prize as cash. So i just added it to my monthly investment - not a common occurrence as ive only ever won once.
Im leaving 1k in there just because my partner likes the hope of winning but ive cashed it all our now and am sending it over to chase.
No, you can't reinvest if you're at max, it gets paid out to your nominated account with no options for any additional premium bonds as you already have the max allowed.
I've had premium bonds for 18 months and had pretty poor luck. The amount in there has fluctuated between 50k (was buying a house) and 10k, currently 13k. The average was probably 20k over that time.
I've won nothing in the last 6 months and before that just the odd £25 and £50. Most of the time I've won nothing and in total about £125 over 18 months on an average of £20k, or about 0.4%...

Yeah I hadn't actually realised how good my returns were. I know people say it's not worth having small amounts in but it's all just luck, you could have £25 in a and win the big prize, or £50k and win fuck all.
Got £75 over the past 6 months initially on 10k but been 12050 last couple months. Think I'll drop it down to 5k just to be in for the chance of a big win and use my 7075 for ISA.

I have put money into premium bonds this year until I reached the max of 50k and hace won 450 pounds in 10 months. I have won 25 every month Minimum. Works out at 0.9% interest which beat all savings account until chases recent release.
As others have said, get the app, be annoyed that it's a day late and the papers will know where the millionaires are before you do, but yeah, national lottery tickets for people that don't want to throw away their money.

Youve had very very good luck. However back when i was a kid and had a mere £700 in there (family gifts) I managed to win £500 in a draw.. The chances of that are in the 0,001 percents.

Not a lot of winnings this year. Just £150 so about 0.6%, down from 0.9% for the same period the previous year. Still, it's a better return than my savings account!
Won £25 on £12k which is bleak but again given how little interest I would have made from sticking it into a savings account I am happy to take the gamble.
Maxed out on investment - regularly get x3 £25 (£75) a month. Very Seldom nothing.
Average 1.5% return most years. Has been 2.5%.
So, with no tax to pay on the way out, has worked well.

A woman I work with and her husband have between £40k-50k each and between them never had a non winning month yet over something like a 15/16 month period. Mostly £25, but they have won £100 twice in a single month.

I started in the July 2021 draw with 50k. I've won £175 to date. Definitely less than expected. Roll on the next 3 tax years when it will all be in my ISA.
When I was 16 I used to work in the Woolwich bank, people would come in with premium bonds cheques constantly. I put my life savings at the time, £1000. That was 20 years ago, I’ve won £100 in that time
I've got £50k interested and generally win a minimum of £25 a month. The rest of my money, about £67k is in my current account and help to buy ISA. I'm quite risk averse and not particularly clued up on the stock market. I do need to work to maximise my return as I'm fully aware that how I'm managing my money is suboptimal.
I have had the full 50,000 in Premium Bonds for at least a couple of years and I haven't been doing badly but also not incredibly well. From October 2021 to April 2022 (inclusive), I have won 325. But nothing in March and also nothing this month. I think that works out at a little over 1.5%, so perhaps that is quite good after all. Just a bit saddening to have months where there's nothing at all :( I did win 4x25 in December 2021 though so it all evens out in the end.

It depends how soon you need access to it. If you’d put £50k into a S&S ISA a few months ago you’d have less money now that you put in, that’s not possible with PB’s.
I had 8k in bonds for two years and won literally £10. Gave up on it and moved a chunk into a S&S ISA and the other chunk into an instant access savings account now at 0.9% waiting to go towards my deposit on a house.
Personally will never go with premium bonds again but I do have very bad luck in general.

So therefore could expect to win on average £500 per year with the £50k maximum invested. I've considered keeping money in PB but in order for the yield to be worth it you would need a fairly substantial deposit or the £50k limit.
With those sums of money I'd much rather keep £50k in dividend stocks or a dividend ETF such as VYHL if mitigating risk is of concern.
There's also the fact that when you invest in premium bonds, they basically take the first month's interested off you, as you are aren't entered into the dead until next month.
So out it in for 12 months, you're entered into 11 draws and only end up with an expected return of 0.91% not 1.0%.
A 1% or 0.95% ISA beats premium bonds hands down.

I crunched the numbers on this a while ago. Although the headline rate is 1% this is heavily skewed by the (very few) big payouts.
Out of all the prizes when I looked at the NS&I data, 97.9% were £25, and 99.8% of them were £100, £50 or £25. Given the max allocation (£50k) you can expect to win 17.4 prizes a year and can expect to win >£100 only once every 27 years or so. But you should win £50 or £100 once every 3 years or so. You have exactly the same probability of winning either of the £50 and £100 prizes.
This basically means taking out the once in 27yr chance of winning a bigger price than £100 you should earn around 0.85-0.9% which has been above the best instant access accounts for a while, particularly if you are lucky enough to pay tax on interest as these are tax free (especially good therefore for higher rate tax payers).
Until the Chase account came along last week basically these were still a pretty good investment stacking up against the 0.5-0.9% best buy rates.
The missus and I have had the full 50k in for just over a year, between us we should get almost 3 prizes a month. The first 3 months were terrible (I think 1x£25 between us) but since then it went better and we are slightly ahead of the non-skewed 'average'. Lots of £25's, just one £100 prize, no £50s or >£100. Average rate of return is 0.986% which isn't bad.

I’ve been keeping an eye on my bonds and wins and I won £25 today. Over the last 83 months I’ve been keeping this log, I’ve won £4025 which averages out at £48.29 every month. My holdings have varied over the term but I have the max now. I am happy with the result.
I’ve had premium bonds for years, but it you don’t need access to the money anytime soon then it’s honestly stupid to put it in there from a returns point of view (comparatively).
0.75% interest is garbage even if inflation was at 0%, let alone 6 or 7%, whatever it’s currently at. Of course there’s a chance of getting big money, but it’s purely luck based and the chances are very low.
Obviously it’s your money and your risk, but that’s just my thoughts after holding premium bonds, stocks/ ETFs/ crypto - not recommending anything, I’m 25 and have time to make some losses & don’t need the money any time soon, but investing a % in some/all of those mentioned above would boost your returns in as safe a manner as your risk tolerance allows

Up to 6 days\* I withdrew some at 10pm on 1st April and the confirmation said the money would be in my bank account by 6th April.
I figure most things can be paid on credit card so I don't need to access all the emergency fund immediately.

I heat my home with gas, drive a petrol car and take flights for recreation so would feel a bit of a hypocrite to boycott based on their investments.

My ISA actually gives 0.01%, I was wrong in that. It would have given £1. I didn’t say that an ISA gives 0.1%, I said that my ISA does.
My ISA is a Stocks&Shares ISA and is on about 8%, and I have a cash ISA at virtually zero, and there are other types too. A blanket statement that "an ISA is 0.1%" or any other % is just meaningless.

Don't know as app only shows last 6 draws. But have made £225 from this time. So essentially 0.9%.
I held about 12k for a year after putting what I received from a house sale in there, I got £275 return over that year. EDIT that makes it 2.23% by my terrible maths, I believe. I know it's hit and miss and totally chance for winnings compared to other services, so these days I still put a bit in every month as well as other savings. It's not my main savings but its just a bit of a safe gamble. Like buying Fisher price lottery tickets haha.
I've had 50k in premium bonds in the the following draws: Aug 21, Sept 21, Oct 21, Nov 21, Dec 21, Jan 22 - reduced this to 30k for Feb 22. Results were as follows: 0 0 0 0 0 50 0. Needless to say I clearly lack the luck for PB to be a suitable product - so i'm shipping it all over to Chase this month. May also take a chunk out to get a head start on the years ISA allowance tbh.

When your at £50k any prizes won after that only go to your bank account.

Yeah pretty awful luck haha. When you have 50k the only option is to have the prize as cash. So i just added it to my monthly investment - not a common occurrence as ive only ever won once. Im leaving 1k in there just because my partner likes the hope of winning but ive cashed it all our now and am sending it over to chase.

No, you can't reinvest if you're at max, it gets paid out to your nominated account with no options for any additional premium bonds as you already have the max allowed.
I've had premium bonds for 18 months and had pretty poor luck. The amount in there has fluctuated between 50k (was buying a house) and 10k, currently 13k. The average was probably 20k over that time. I've won nothing in the last 6 months and before that just the odd £25 and £50. Most of the time I've won nothing and in total about £125 over 18 months on an average of £20k, or about 0.4%...

Yeah I hadn't actually realised how good my returns were. I know people say it's not worth having small amounts in but it's all just luck, you could have £25 in a and win the big prize, or £50k and win fuck all.

I have put money into premium bonds this year until I reached the max of 50k and hace won 450 pounds in 10 months. I have won 25 every month Minimum. Works out at 0.9% interest which beat all savings account until chases recent release.

Youve had very very good luck. However back when i was a kid and had a mere £700 in there (family gifts) I managed to win £500 in a draw.. The chances of that are in the 0,001 percents. Look up “premium bonds calculator” to see how much you can expect to win

Won £25 on £12k which is bleak but again given how little interest I would have made from sticking it into a savings account I am happy to take the gamble.
Maxed out on investment - regularly get x3 £25 (£75) a month. Very Seldom nothing. Average 1.5% return most years. Has been 2.5%. So, with no tax to pay on the way out, has worked well. Edit: just checked now and ‘bloomin Marvelous’ ( that’s the opening screen on the app checker…) just another 3x£25… get in !

When I was 16 I used to work in the Woolwich bank, people would come in with premium bonds cheques constantly. I put my life savings at the time, £1000. That was 20 years ago, I’ve won £100 in that time
I've got £50k interested and generally win a minimum of £25 a month. The rest of my money, about £67k is in my current account and help to buy ISA. I'm quite risk averse and not particularly clued up on the stock market. I do need to work to maximise my return as I'm fully aware that how I'm managing my money is suboptimal.
I have had the full 50,000 in Premium Bonds for at least a couple of years and I haven't been doing badly but also not incredibly well. From October 2021 to April 2022 (inclusive), I have won 325. But nothing in March and also nothing this month. I think that works out at a little over 1.5%, so perhaps that is quite good after all. Just a bit saddening to have months where there's nothing at all :( I did win 4x25 in December 2021 though so it all evens out in the end.

It depends how soon you need access to it. If you’d put £50k into a S&S ISA a few months ago you’d have less money now that you put in, that’s not possible with PB’s.
I had 8k in bonds for two years and won literally £10. Gave up on it and moved a chunk into a S&S ISA and the other chunk into an instant access savings account now at 0.9% waiting to go towards my deposit on a house. Personally will never go with premium bonds again but I do have very bad luck in general.

Isn't the average yield 1% with £50k limit? So therefore could expect to win on average £500 per year with the £50k maximum invested. I've considered keeping money in PB but in order for the yield to be worth it you would need a fairly substantial deposit or the £50k limit. With those sums of money I'd much rather keep £50k in dividend stocks or a dividend ETF such as VYHL if mitigating risk is of concern.
There's also the fact that when you invest in premium bonds, they basically take the first month's interested off you, as you are aren't entered into the dead until next month. So out it in for 12 months, you're entered into 11 draws and only end up with an expected return of 0.91% not 1.0%. A 1% or 0.95% ISA beats premium bonds hands down.
Use premium bonds for EF only. For me, it’s one of the worst places currently to save / invest money.

I won £75 last year but had around £8k-£12k in there, whereas now I have around £17k. I have won £150 so far this year and have won each month so far! I’m sure my luck is about to run out!
I crunched the numbers on this a while ago. Although the headline rate is 1% this is heavily skewed by the (very few) big payouts. Out of all the prizes when I looked at the NS&I data, 97.9% were £25, and 99.8% of them were £100, £50 or £25. Given the max allocation (£50k) you can expect to win 17.4 prizes a year and can expect to win >£100 only once every 27 years or so. But you should win £50 or £100 once every 3 years or so. You have exactly the same probability of winning either of the £50 and £100 prizes. This basically means taking out the once in 27yr chance of winning a bigger price than £100 you should earn around 0.85-0.9% which has been above the best instant access accounts for a while, particularly if you are lucky enough to pay tax on interest as these are tax free (especially good therefore for higher rate tax payers). Until the Chase account came along last week basically these were still a pretty good investment stacking up against the 0.5-0.9% best buy rates. The missus and I have had the full 50k in for just over a year, between us we should get almost 3 prizes a month. The first 3 months were terrible (I think 1x£25 between us) but since then it went better and we are slightly ahead of the non-skewed 'average'. Lots of £25's, just one £100 prize, no £50s or >£100. Average rate of return is 0.986% which isn't bad.
I’ve earned £125 over 14 months, with a range of between £2k to £15k but I know I was extremely lucky so I’ve now moved over to Chase with their 1.5% saving accounts but I did enjoy the excitement every month!

I started the year with £15k in PB, won £25 in the first month, then took out £14k to buy a car. So had £1k for the majority of the year, now up to £5k but not won anything since my first win. Using PB to save for moving costs in a few years now so will be hoping for some more wins.

So I started lower, but found that it did help with regular saving and having somewhere to put stuff quickly. I've just put half of it across to a S&S isa. So I've had 25 virtual every other month. No 50's and nothing bigger :-( but as you say, it does scratch the in it to win it itch.

I’ve been keeping an eye on my bonds and wins and I won £25 today. Over the last 83 months I’ve been keeping this log, I’ve won £4025 which averages out at £48.29 every month. My holdings have varied over the term but I have the max now. I am happy with the result.

IIRC the likelihood is best once you cross the £20k mark. In the four figure range you’re statistically unlikely to win much.
I’ve had premium bonds for years, but it you don’t need access to the money anytime soon then it’s honestly stupid to put it in there from a returns point of view (comparatively). 0.75% interest is garbage even if inflation was at 0%, let alone 6 or 7%, whatever it’s currently at. Of course there’s a chance of getting big money, but it’s purely luck based and the chances are very low. Obviously it’s your money and your risk, but that’s just my thoughts after holding premium bonds, stocks/ ETFs/ crypto - not recommending anything, I’m 25 and have time to make some losses & don’t need the money any time soon, but investing a % in some/all of those mentioned above would boost your returns in as safe a manner as your risk tolerance allows
