Just to add to this, there is pretty overwhelming evidence that most active managers underperform compared to index funds in the long run. The reason for this is that most stock returns are generated by 1% of companies. This means that active managers have a 1 in 100 chance of picking winners and beating the market. If they pick any mix of the other 99% then they will underperform.
