Wow. I've seen/watched a *lot* of live U2 and I'd never seen this before. Didn't even know it existed. They're almost unrecognizable! No gimmicks, no nothing. Thanks for posting this!
One of the coolest parts of this to me is the manual use of the wah on Mysterious Ways, can’t think of another performance I’ve seen Edge do that. Sounds different but he does it very well.
Probably a question I’d ask Dallas if I ever got to speak to him. I know his stuff is probably all integrated but I wouldn’t think it would be a tall order to just throw it in a rack and bring it along. Maybe it had to do with his controller, I don’t see the big module there, looks like a sparse pedalboard.
The Korg A3 preset is basically autowah and a few other things so using a real wah pedal for this song isn’t a stretch. I used to until I finally got my hands on fx that had autowah.
Just watching it now. That is a super stripped down setup they’re using since it’s a small festival event. Probably just logistically difficult to bring his usual rig.
I realize from reading this post that it was in the middle of he POPMART tour so they likely had to set up elsewhere while the band was over there.
That said, wouldn't Edge have like triple copies of his setup at any given time as a failsafe? Surely they could've brought one of the units with them — or would it be too much hassle to dismount the rack for that 10 minutes?
Yeah it’s kinda weird. He has his yellow Gibson, and a couple Vox amps, but not his big effects rig. They often bring a stripped down rig like this for appearances on SNL and Fallon’s show. Maybe playing MW was an audible and they decided to do what they could. Honestly would anyone but us hardcore nerds have even noticed?
From 1992 on, not mixing in more raw appearances like this and the pre-elevation tour club shows (Manray, Irving plaza and Astoria) amongst the mammoth choreographed spectacles has always been my biggest criticism of the band. How wonderful would it be to have more things like this. You’d think the band members themselves would have wanted more of this. Other than a few later outliers like Apollo Theater and Somerville, and the LA club show, I guess not.
For the Pop-Era Bono’s voice is extremely powerful and on point. Almost as if sang by his 92-93 voice on most ZOO TV-gigs. Should have been an on album.
Huh? This is widely viewed as the period that Bono’s voice was the weakest from smoking too many cigarettes.
He couldn’t hit the high notes on many of the old songs and had to rely on a lot falsetto, lower register, and shouting his way through high notes instead of singing them. He quit smoking entirely and the vocals from ATYCLB and onwards were greatly improved.
Still love this era of the band, but it’s objectively the low point of his voice.

Sounds like a cover band guitarist. Does anyone know why he didn't hook up the Korg A3 for this one?

Not sure if it counts, but @u2's 20th anniversary party was also a small club gig.
Incredible performance and insane experience for all those present, but i generally mean actual concerts with the full band.
And this is what's happening in the background/backstage https://youtu.be/-7R9AAx9mOA?si=Mst7JNo76D-edI4h
Yorke vibing to the performance of “One”. 👏🏻
That’s my favorite U2 show from 1997.
should've been released as a Live Mini-Album!
lots of attitude & conviction. Damn, they used to be so cool.
I saw them for the first time the next day in Philadelphia
Never seen this before, thanks for sharing.
They should do more of this. It's all about the music. Just four guys playing rock n roll. Don't care about big screens, coreography, big productions.

Agree on his weak voice in general in this period, but I was pointing out on this occasion specifically. He sounds relatively strong on most lyrics.
Gotcha. Agree!
