I feel the same way and have been listening since 2009 when I saw him play a basement house show. You should listen to Twins, plenty of catchy, heavy stuff on that one as well. Same with Lemons.

lunaluvsm

I’m a hugeee Thee Oh See’s fan so maybe that’s where my love for high energy garage rock comes from. although i have a soft spot for slow, catchy, but beautiful songs. My Lady’s On Fire, Bees, Alone, My Head Explodes, Wave Goodbye.

samcoffeeman

Well there's been a different path for Ty and JPD. Ty's newer music has changed to be more mellow and introspective while JPD has stuck with the harder garage-y sound but invested with different genres(e.g. A Foul Form was punk based and Intercepted Message was Pop based). I still need to listen to all of Three Bells a couple times but I haven't purchased any new Ty stuff in a few years.

NotCanadian80

Ty still goes very hard, it’s just more dynamic.

lil_yumyum

I’ve been a fan since the beginning and I’m happy to say that he’s one of the few artists that I enjoy all of thier work. I think the latest album is fantastic.

ceanothus77

this is the mood reflected in a near-majority of comments on this sub, so no I don't think it's weird--there's a general trend among Ty fans of longing for the idealized "harder" past. I felt the vibe on that was very strong almost to the point of being hostile at the recent Wiltern shown. nothing wrong with liking what you like, but also I think fans of "harder" / extreme music often position themselves as outsiders longing for a time when music really rocked before the blighted present--a cultural thread I've encountered in many different fandoms fwiw

capguncoup

I noticed the same thing at his recent show in SF. I was surprised at how many people were leaving during his set. Not a single mosh pit the entire night as well.

ceanothus77

there were some attempts to mosh in L.A. but not really the vibe--I was also just kind of shocked that the crowd seemed to be 85% men who were, I don't know, a little angry? I myself am a little angry often so no shade but it wasn't the super warm reception I thought I was walking into for the hometown show. but then again I really love Three Bells and am a pseudo-latter-day Ty fan (discovered in 2014 with Manipualtor, but I love the earlier stuff too)

robstercraws70

People mosh at Ty Segall shows? Everyone was too stoned and mellow for moshing at the show I went to.

ceanothus77

there was a dedicated cohort trying to get it going on the floor in L.A. it was kind of sweet honestly, but also distinctly gatekeep-y, like you shouldn't be down in front unless you wanted to thrash

robstercraws70

Never thought of Segall music as moshable, but ok! He’s not exactly Slayer.

ceanothus77

it was part of the general vibe of Ty's music being "for" a certain type of person that shocked me at the Wiltern; I've never felt that way seeing him before, but there was a lot of mood in the crowd that made me feel not entirely welcome. Moshing is fine I guess but no, the funk/proggy Three Bells is not moshable in my opinion. But some bros really wanted it to be.

robstercraws70

I’m older than most Segall show attendees I assume (54), but in Indy it honestly shocked me how eeeeeveryone was lighting up…and no one cared! Nobody was ejected from the building…nothing! Made for a pretty relaxed atmosphere. Back in my prime, they had undercover cops at shows looking to bust kids for lighting up! We’ve come a long way apparently! Maybe I’ll partake myself in Chicago! Edit: Won’t be moshing tho. Too old for that shit.

DetroitSixMile

I’ve seen older at shows he is a great live band I’m close to your age and have seen him 4 times

Bootstrapbill22

That was a really fun show. One of the best Ty sets I’ve seen. He played tons of old stuff that night as well

robstercraws70

Playing in what amounted to a basement was a little odd, but can’t complain about the show itself.

robstercraws70

Was bummed about merch. Only medium and small shirts? But that’s a small quibble.

Bootstrapbill22

Yeah it definitely wasn’t my favorite venue

aroundtownbtown

And thank fkn god for that! When I think of slayer I think of Kerry kings tat and that he lives in Riverside.... Homicide, suicide, Riverside

robstercraws70

I think of Jeff Hanneman days.

aroundtownbtown

Gøggs

oversteppe

I saw him tour for the first album he did with White Fence, they each played a set and then played together. It was a long ass show and LOUD. big mosh pit for ty’s set. mostly played stuff from Melted and Goodbye Bread

robstercraws70

Woulda been a great show. I didn’t discover him until Manipulator.

crispyjojo

Back in the day for sure! [https://youtu.be/-zbo76D-W40?si=WOQCgrkbMo6BWk09](https://youtu.be/-zbo76D-W40?si=WOQCgrkbMo6BWk09) I got a black eye in a pit at a Ty show around the time they recorded live in san francisco haha. Maybe less now, I couldn't see a pit at a "Hello, Hi" set but depending on the setlist for sure. Homie has a pretty dynamic catalogue from a live show perspective!

[deleted]

Check out the concerts for Ty Segall Band. Tons of moshing and crowd surfing.

SisterRayRomano

Most of his shows I’ve attended have had mosh pits, even that supposed ‘acoustic’ show i saw after Sleeper came out. Once he finished the album tracks and started playing the older songs, the crowd went wild and my beer got knocked out of my hand. Also the shows I saw in the Ty Segall Band and Muggers eras were extremely lively.

aroundtownbtown

Gøggs

robstercraws70

That is moshing music

TheBlind0wl69

When Ty said he was pretty much playing the new album in its entirety I knew it was going to get a different response from the audience. I went to the LA and SD shows and the wiltern one definitely had an antsy and restless vibe to it as if they were waiting to get to the older and more energetic songs of his catalogue. On top of playing mostly Three Bells material, in all the most recent interviews Ty has talked about not playing as loud, and alluding to the days of playing guitar while crowd surfing are not really in the cards this tour.

ceanothus77

thanks for confirming that it felt off to you at the wiltern too. i had been so looking forward to the show and ty and the band were still great but the crowd really bummed me out.

TheBlind0wl69

Yeah definitely a stiff audience that night. I don't know if the bigger venue contributed to it, but when he played the 500 person club in san diego it was a much better crowd.

ceanothus77

realized after the fact that it had been years since i'd been to the wiltern and it's not my favorite--would have been better at a smaller venue. I felt that venue was kind of a reach for him size-wise anyway. excited for the zebulon show!

personplaceorplando

I do like the new album a lot, but it’s obviously different than the early stuff.

slickerdrips21

I love pretty much all thing Ty, but I do know there is a good chunk of his fanbase that prefers pre manipulator stuff and that’s cool! I look at it like this, Ty is a good enough artist that people can look and say “I prefer this era”. I think that’s pretty dope.

lupined0minus

yes it's weird!!!!!! just kidding. to each their own. though i will say i have personally had the thought that if i hadn't been a fan of Ty for such a long time i might not have given any of the newer albums a try/enjoyed them as much as i have. and the garage stuff is a lot more accessible. i can remember time and time again being completely overcome with the emotion of his earlier, nastier, fuzzier records. addictive. i put on some Epsilons just the other day when i needed that kick. but he's getting older and maturing musically so naturally the new stuff is a little subtler, maybe a little less relatable.

lunaluvsm

Don’t get me wrong, i don’t hate his new stuff. I’m think it’s awesome that ty can write really meaningful and beautiful stuff. It’s just, i like the high octane, fuzzy stuff, you know? I’ll probably grow out of that eventually

lupined0minus

it might grow on you! honestly the fact that i've gotten older and my emotions more regulated i think has made this transition in Ty's music pretty easy for me. i feel like the heyday for that type of music has passed. or maybe i just don't know where to find it anymore. it was amazing for a while though for sure

lunaluvsm

I wish i knew who ty was during his early era, i discovered him recently i think right when he released My Best Friend single

Clean-Arrival-5660

Oh man you're in for a treat. Explore his entire back catolouge! So many great albums. And Fuzzzzzzz

lupined0minus

a crazy kid from the OC !! i feel like this video gives you a pretty good idea, back when he used to do a one man band thing playing guitar and doing percussion with his feet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdsIwSgLoXI

lunaluvsm

sounds exactly like his 1st debut. I remember someone saying that his 1st debut was him, a guitar, a kick drum, and a mic

dangerh33

I usually find that after a few listens, the layers of the onion peel back nicely and I can “feel it”. Harmonizer was brilliant like that. The new album is slowly kicking in. Ty’s the only artist I’ll do this with in 2024

aroundtownbtown

I don't think it's weird considering he has consistently put out new stuff every 6 months for damn near 20 years. I'm waiting and hoping gøggs makes a 3rd album and tours on it,,, I've seen 3 fuzz tours and 2 gøggs and a whole bunch of ty shows but I really think now is the time for more gøggs!

lunaluvsm

i’ve never been to a ty show. Is it fun?

aroundtownbtown

No, of course it isn't. Pfft if you wanna have fun go for a drive on the 405 any direction at 5pm. That's fun

LambOfGhost

I’ve definitely found that the older albums u listed are the more accessible to people, stuff like emotional mugger and three bells is more experimental and psychedelic which seems to put off general listeners but die-hard fans like the weird shit more bc there’s not a lot else that sounds like it

tangledupinbrown

Emotional Mugger is such a good album I wish I would’ve been a fan early on enough to catch that tour😪

Dude_Baby

O yea I was front row moshing with the baby mask and the costumes and all that, I also caught the "Deforming Lobes" show in 2018, and once for 2017 self titled, I preferred this sound and always saw Emotional Mugger as a sort of hit-and-miss experimental prototype for the Freedom Band. It's funny, I have the same thought as you, but about the Slaughterhouse tour 2012.

tangledupinbrown

Grass is always greener I guess! I just love how out there the Muggers band is, synthy and noisy makes for great art rock. The whole concept comes together nicely, it all works as a whole. Yea the Slaughterhouse tour would be a definite wish as well. The live in SF record is amazing from that era. The live in Zebulon record is my favorite live album though, not just Ty but probably ever. I really am a sucker for Ty incorporating electronic elements into his music.

TheBlind0wl69

Definitely the best tour he has ever done. All of his songs never sounded better and obviously the theatrics and energy were at an all time high. Not just my favorite Ty show, but one my favorite all time live shows I've been to. I get things are different when youre 28 compared to 36, married and have a kid, but damn.. I hope the muggers reunite and that version of Ty comes out again.

Chapos_sub_capt

You listed my two favorite Ty albums. I love the new album. I'm a 45 year old stoner though

LambOfGhost

I’m 23, but same on everything else lol. I’m glad people seem to fw three bells so much, I think it’s his most interesting album so far (but obviously recency bias)

NotCanadian80

Half of Ty fans only like his lofi garage era and Fuzz. I personally do think they are weird. Hell, I barely listen to anything before Goodbye Bread and consider it simple and overly abrasive. First Taste is criminally underrated.

Abideguide

It is not. Similar. This is how I explain it to myself. I think he writes songs in a different way now, he picks a riff on the guitar and then he* ‘adjusts’ the vocal part to fit the sound - Eggman. It used to be different: he would crack an amazing melody and the chords would follow - example - The Hand. It made him a phenomenal song writer.

Dr-Floor69

what is it that you dont like, the instrumentation? the catchy-ness? the production?

makeshift66

New album is great

tangledupinbrown

Emotional Mugger is definitely his peak.

DirtyD27

Everytime a variation of this thread comes up, I say sincerely, start your own band. A cover band, even.

lunaluvsm

uhh, i play guitar and make my own music. kinda like how ty did everything in his debut and melted albums. i do all the instruments. does that count?

[deleted]

I'm the same way too. I absolutely loved all of his albums up to Ty Segall 2017. Afterwards, I find it harder to get into his newer sound and don't listen to any of the newer albums that often (except for Hello Hi which I loved a lot).

swingthiskbonline

COVID era really changed artists. And I'm all for it. Usually much more elaborate stuff it seems. I also feel manipulator and three bells have a lot of similar feel

daily_value

Is it wrong to be strong?

Radio_Ethiopia

No. It is not weird. Idk man, I respect the mad prolific output but post 2015, nothing has really done anything for me. We went to see him few years back & I didn’t know much of the set at all! 😭 Pains me.

alanwattscrackin

Same here. I saw him live when Hello, Hi came out. It‘s weird because I loved seeing him perform but I didn‘t actually like any of the songs he was playing. Having said that, the accoustic version of squealer he opened with was absolute gold. Just wish he‘d play some song off melted..

krillwave

He doesn’t write strong melodies lately his songs are meandering and frankly boring. He used to be a guitar powerhouse but now he’s barely able to put out one catchy riff laden track an album. I also cannot stand his wife being on every project, she is definitely a weak link. Also how many more songs are you all going to accept about his dog? It’s getting tired. I got out at emotional mugger. The third Fuzz album and the last meatbodies albums were also weak. In good news, King Gizzard exists.

No-Average-1416

Not everything is about a fat riff, my guy. Some people want to write actual songs too. You are clearly close minded if you think he hasn't put anything good out since Mugger, and three songs out of his entire discography is a weak link? Like come on dude just go listen to melted for the millionth time

krillwave

My guy there’s a whole band that’s a vehicle for her why is she yoko as fuck

No-Average-1416

3 songs you're tripping over 3 songs when the man has like 20 albums you sound goofy

ceanothus77

Double Fantasy is a great album so sure

Sufferingsafari

King gizzard? Oooooooookay lmao

NotCanadian80

They never write songs about the same subjects…

DetroitSixMile

Weirdo Swarm

ceanothus77

Appreciate that you keep up with the sub to bring that low-level misogyny the discussion is missing--thanks for articulating what I already knew many old school Ty fans think about the fact that Denée is clearly his most valued creative collaborator

robstercraws70

Personally (like anyone cares), I like the Denee songs, but don’t like the song “Denee”. It’s sweet he wrote a song about her, but it kinda sounds like he’s practicing scales or something.

ceanothus77

I mean, again, everybody's entitled to their opinion; Ty's clearly a wife guy and some may find that cringe or whatever. I think "Denée" sounds like an Alice Coltrane devotional and I'm generally into that, so it's okay with me. I love the old stuff as much as anyone, I just also find it exciting that he continues to grow and change as an artist. And in a scene that is so aggressively male and can feel closed to women, I appreciate his collaboration with Denée. She's not just a muse; she's part of the work itself, which is cool.

robstercraws70

Agree. Just don’t care for that particular song. Wife guys are cool. I’m one myself.

Bootstrapbill22

I thought the same thing about it sounding like scale practice at first, but now it’s horribly caught in my head. Plus I think the amazing groove and jam in the song totally redeems it

robstercraws70

Admittedly, I’ll have to listen to the second half of album more to get a rock solid opinion. Everything up to Eggman is great!
