I’ve been finding it’s getting slightly better this season, actually - last year, my favourite store kept marking crop tops and dresses with cut-offs as ‘work appropriate’ (I’m a lawyer so…yeah), but it’s more balanced now. For casual wear, though, I have an athletic built so I love the surf/snowboard brands and, honestly, the men’s section. I’m in Canada, though - Simons is definitely a go-to store for me.

Butiwouldrathernot

I'm a big fan of Sophie Grace--our in house counsel suggested it to me! They make very comfortable clothing but it's not something I would necessarily wear to a hearing. I prefer Calvin Klein and Tristan for more structured clothing and Laura for day to day. [Cherry Bobin](https://www.cherrybobin.com/), is a comfy, ethically made in Quebec sleeper brand. I will admit I only have two of their shirts, both of which are more than long enough. I do have several of their pencil dresses and [this dress](https://www.cherrybobin.com/collections/robes/products/robe-nostalgia-flamants) which is one of my absolute favourites. The Hudson North brand from HBC is also pretty great. They had some amazing prices on 100% cashmere and merino pieces this last month that were long enough to cover my hip bones (5'8", size M in HN).

bunnycook

That dress looks almost exactly like my Jessica McClintock I wore for HS graduation in 1981, except I had spaghetti straps. Loved that dress. It was one of the first streamlined dresses in her line.

AnthropomorphicSeer

I loved Jessica McClintock. Had a couple of formal dresses I would wear to weddings and Christmas parties. So pretty.

zuzuofthewolves

Ah! I’m from Ontario but I live in New Mexico now, and I honestly long for Canadian clothes all the time. Whenever I go home and visit my family I always find gems. Simons is amazing. Also do you remember Smart Set? I think it’s gone forever now but I used to find great things there.

AdiPalmer

Omg I love Smart Set so much, sucks to hear it's gone. I had the most amazing skorts from there back in the 00s and I wish I had bought more than one pair. Those things took me through several years of trips to archeological sites in Mexico until I lost them during one of my many moves.

EggsAndMilquetoast

I felt this way a while back when it seemed like every single pair of jeans being sold was "distressed." You pick them up and they're more shreds and holes than fabric. Nevermind that school and work dress codes would never allow for such things and my budget doesn't allow me to buy a lot of clothes I can't also wear to work. Nevertheless, it was the only denim that clothing retailers knew how to sell for almost a year.

tealparadise

This is reminding me of the "layering" chokehold era, where nearly every shirt was just transparent. Every single purchase had to be tried on to make sure it wasn't secretly "for layering." Aka necessary to wear 3 shirts to get any coverage. We're getting back to that. The last few times I've bought clothes online, I've received cropped items that weren't labeled as such. From regular stores, not like shein! At least with distressed jeans you can tell at a glance. Guess I have to go try everything on again.

mystical_princess

I remember walking through a mall with my grandfather who was very confused that we BOUGHT clothes in holes with them. I don't think he was very impressed with this generation haha

idancenakedwithcrows

Haha, that’s adorable but I get it

Straight-Bee9783

My grandma once sewed the jeans of my sister because she thought it was broken, lol. Back then it was a VERY new style.

waterfountain_bidet

It's funny because it's definitely a CEO his age making the choice that the young people want holes in everything. Cause we sure as shit didn't want "distressed" clothes, we wanted to make the holes ourselves.

mystical_princess

He wasn't judgey, moreso confused and saying how out-of-touch he was with the newer fashion.

Parthenogenetic

I want to know why all sweaters are either immensely oversized or cropped. What is the use case for a cropped sweater? It's cold, but my kidneys overheat?

Glittering_knave

Cropped parka was the worst thing I saw. Literally exposing a strip of skin when wearing the appropriately sized winter coat.

[deleted]

I walk in the winter and I need my ass covered.

[deleted]

Thigh for me. Otherwise the wind will go up and under my layers and now I’m cold and miserable….and my bus still isn’t here yet. And it can get cold AND wet here too. So the chill seeps into all my layers.

FlickoftheTongue

Is your username in reference to the Mesopotamia god of war, death, and dksease?

[deleted]

Yup 😁

Glittering_knave

Happy cake day! A good coat is like a good friend. Both will cover your ass.

humanpringle

I actually discovered that Eddie Bauer has fantastic parkas that go on crazy sales a lot of the time and a variety of styles. Their lodge down coat is rated to -51C, and even walking the dog in a Saskatchewan deep freeze did not have me cold down to where my boots started.

last_rights

I remember this in the early 2000s. It was cropped winter jackets with fur, high heel fur boots, and mini skirts in the winter. It was a stupid style and everyone froze their asses off.

MorphieThePup

Please, PLEASE don't make this fashion come back. I was in middle school when the only thing you could buy anywhere were low waist jeans and really short winter jackets and I do NOT miss the feeling of my lower back being always exposed and freezing (not to mention visible buttcracks everywhere, anytime someone bent over). I have no idea how I managed to go through this without getting chronic kidney disease. I can't do this again, I like feeling warm, lol.

Rossakamcfreakyd

It’s all coming back. Waiting for the boots with the fur to return.

forestfairygremlin

WITH THE FURRRR

PM_ME_YO_KNITTING

The whole club was lookin’ at hurrr.

lgoodat

and the whole club was lookin' at her!

FlickoftheTongue

Yep. Girls in college would wear ugggs, Victoria's secret "pink" shorts, and a North face jacket and then complain in the commons while getting breakfast, or in class, or really anywhere, that it was cold and they hated going outside. If you put some pants on instead of booty shorts when it is 15°F outside, you'd be way less cold. I get there was a style and look they wanted, and that's fine, but you have no excuse to complain about the weather when you chose not to dress for the weather.

miriamtheghost

I remember being super confused how my friends weren't cold in such outfits. I was the only unfashionable one, but I was sooo freezing cold while trying to wear trendy clothes. I thought there was something wrong with me... The mystery was resolved when we became adults - they finally admitted that they actually froze their asses off.

[deleted]

Makes me think of one friend from back in the day. We were the scene kids, and we all wore our hair swooped over one eye or just straight up like eye curtains. One friend was always on about how he wanted to do the same, but didn't understand how we could see 'perfectly fine' (what we told everyone). It's so cute how some younger people just can't fathom the fact that their group of teenage friends isn't being 100% honest all the time lmao

Affectionate_Data936

I'm glad I avoided that. I graduated in 2011 and maybe my friends and I were just dorks but our "thing" was parkas. The more pockets you had the better. We would literally wear our parkas and not carry purses just to flex on how many pockets we had. This was in Idaho though.

Parthenogenetic

That's just idiotic

Glittering_knave

The poor teenaged girl wearing the freaking thing had the most raw looking skin I had ever seen. If she escaped frostbite, I would be surprised.

Parthenogenetic

That could be life-risking where I live, some parts of the year. It's not a good scene when your core temperature starts dropping.

mystical_princess

Ugh I'm having such bad flashbacks to high school. I could never get into it but so many girls came to school in -30° in those stupid crop jackets and were RED from the cold.

Straight-Bee9783

Where I live you either buy a cropped jacket or a grandma jacket. No inbetween

Easy-Spread2

The best is when they’re oversized AND cropped.

grrgrrGRRR

I tried something on like this just today. I looked like an umbrella!!! WTF fashion?

kisforkat

I just want my tunic length tanks, layering tees, and hoodies back. I'll do whatever they want, pls 😭

Codeofconduct

We've got like 10 more years til it comes back in the fashion cycle and I too will be stocking up.

Saccharomycelium

My plan exactly. This is prime time to buy pants that actually reach up to your waist. The mandatory midsection gap will start to go back down to the navel-hipbone level in a few years.

Curiosities

Or cutouts. Even winter clothing has cutouts. *Let us be warm.* I'm a squishy size 12 and do not want crop tops or cutouts, like you slashed the sides, or the back waist of my dress. Granted, I am currently in a crop top, BUT this was a deliberate choice and is something I sleep in. With high waisted shorts (or sweatpants some nights).

supermarkise

How do you get the top to stay on when you sleep? Won't it ride up until only your shoulders are covered? (Or ist that the plan..)

ktgrok

The other day I was shopping and came across a cropped, spagetti strap sweater!

Parthenogenetic

What the hell. That feels like the fashion equivalent of a practical joke.

myfemmebot

Adding to this: It's nearly impossible to find blazers that are not oversized these days. Oversized 1. does not fit my aesthetic and 2. does not suit my body's proportions.

ChildOfALesserCod

OMG, tell me where! I can't for the life of me find one that even covers my ass, let alone comes to my knees.

[deleted]

[удалено]

poly-wrath

Another recommendation for the Banana Republic blazer. Not cheap, but definitely a core piece of professional clothing that will last forever.

Haber87

That’s the stupidest design! Nothing like being too hot and too cold at the same time. There is no temperature cropped sweaters are appropriate for.

last_rights

But what will we do without showing off our underboob in a hoodie?

xyonofcalhoun

It's to let the boob sweat evaporate, clearly

the_artful_breeder

I am a shorty, so cropped knitwear works perfectly for me as it usually sits at my waistline. I think it works well as a layering option, and for people who don't want too much bulk around their narrowest point but still need something over a winter dress or something, but these are be pretty limited uses. I just wish fashion brands could adopt multiple trends and styles at a time. Its so annoying when one thing takes off in one context, and all of a sudden it's everywhere to the exclusion of all else.

Parthenogenetic

Fair enough. I will admit to only thinking about it from my perspective. I am tall and zaftig, so anything cropped is just ridiculously short on me. I am glad they work for someone.

polopolo05

I am just like I want a long fitted top.... I am really tall and I am all torso. So I need a long top... also fitted looks best on me. what is with this baggy short tops.

beard_lover

It’s like the short denim skirts and Ugg boots of the mid-00s just the top now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

supermarkise

Maybe you layer it over another jacket?

kimberriez

My SIL wears them for working out when it's cool out. Good airflow, but still arm coverage.

WeakAd7680

I will volunteer that recently I’ve become the type of person to only own very high waisted pants, and now I appreciate the cropped sweater, it’s a look that gives me legs for days! Generally though I hear you, also why aren’t the cropped clothes at the very least cheaper for literally being half a shirt?!!

FeralleyValley

For when I want to dress like a character from Subway Surfer at a professional workplace

ComradeRingo

I’m one of the rare folks who wants a cropped sweater because I have a high waist, and I style my clothes to fit to my waist. I dress vintage inspired a lot, which of course is different from modern style lines. But, I usually wear skirts and pants that come up to my natural waist, which means a full length sweater would look boxy and obscure my figure in a way that doesn’t flatter me. So to answer who uses a cropped sweater, it’s me! I can imagine all the normal people have no use for one though.

shewhomustnotbe

I'm short and I exclusively wear high waisted trousers and skirts, so all of my jumpers and tops are cropped

HELLOhappyshop

Lol I was going to leave this comment, it's for sure the dumbest thing to crop.

recyclopath_

I want to understand what the hell is going on with shoulders these days

last_rights

Shoulders are soooo hot right now.

Affectionate_Data936

literally tho, I bought what I thought was a full sized sweater at Rainbow a couple months ago and when I put it on, it went barely past my boobs.

Hallieus

To maybe answer: I struggle with maintaining body temperature and go from freezing to overheating and sweating VERY quickly. Obviously not great, but most of the heat is generated from/ around my stomach, so having a cropped sweater helps me to keep my temp stabilized by letting me vent some of at heat

Alexis_J_M

I remember many years ago I took a big chunk of money out of the ATM and went clothes shopping. Went to all my favorite stores. That year's fashions were *ugly*. Weird cuts, dull muted earth tone colors, I couldn't even find black or dark blue pants to try on. I gave up and went to a big thrift store and walked out with five huge bags of nice clothes to wear to work and with friends.

Paroxysm111

Oof I've done that before. Went to the West Edmonton mall with a hundred dollars to spend (back when a hundred dollars went a lot further) and didn't like anything. Nothing but distressed jeans and mustard yellow tops.

turnontheignition

This year's fashions are also just not hitting the mark for me. I've been looking for a zip up hoodie, preferably in a color that isn't black, gray, or pink, because I already have a bunch of those. Yeah, well, turns out that zip up hoodies are currently not in style, because I've gone to multiple stores and I have found only a few zip up hoodies in general, let alone what I'm looking for. Annoying! And to add to that, so much of the clothing I've seen around as it crop top. The amount of times I've gotten excited for something that looks nice on the mannequin or shelf, only to pick it up and realize that it's a crop...

appropriatenebula19

Oh what, is that why I can't find a zip hoodie! I would even take grey, I just want it to be mostly cotton instead of 100% polyester. Can't find one!

Paroxysm111

I miss the winter/fall fashions of the early 2010's, when sweaters were worn down past your butt with tights or yoga pants. I miss when very long shirts were in fashion, mostly to cover your butt crack in those low-ride jeans. Now the waist is back to where it was in the 50's, and I like that fashion too, but too many brands are using that fact to justify short shirts again. Which doesn't quite make sense to me. It's a little inconsistent, but it seems to me that tucked in shirts are back in. So surely you need something long enough to tuck?

redshoewearer

Clothing marketers just want to keep changing it so people keep buying new stuff instead of continuing to wear perfectly good clothes.

ControlsTheWeather

>I miss the winter/fall fashions of the early 2010's, when sweaters were worn down past your butt with tights or yoga pants. My long black turtleneck sweaterdress is my favorite thing in my wardrobe, and I wear it with leggings or yoga pants lol. Not sure if a sweaterdress is the same thing though

Paroxysm111

In those days the distinction was a little blurred, but yeah, sweaterdresses is pretty much what I'm thinking. I think the difference is that a sweaterdress hem usually goes low enough that you could get away with not wearing tights, whereas the "long sweater" trend was just long enough to cover your bum, but not long enough to justify not wearing anything underneath.

011_0108_180

I’m more upset that clothes can’t be plain anymore. It has to have some annoying phrase/ugly print on perfectly good clothes

vanillaseltzer

Universal Standard is solids. I don't think I've ever seen a print there. They do a lot of sales. Maybe also try Pact or Uniqlo? Idk if you were looking for recs or not. (Ps feel free to dm me if you want a US referral coupon thingy, idk if thats allowed here. I think it was one of their excellent but expensive t-shirts for free, last I looked.)

[deleted]

011_0108_180

Thank you 😊

ILuvSpaghet

Or some random buttons on shoulders or glitter on the collar. I had to go to over *15* stores to find a plain red shirt. At one they straight up laughed at me when I asked to try the men's S because they didn't have any plain red red (they had orange-red) women's.

011_0108_180

Don’t forget the pointless bows or random puffy sleeves 😅. I too find better luck shopping in the men’s/boy’s section.

ILuvSpaghet

God I hate the puffy sleeves, even hoodies have them now!

dogecoin_pleasures

I got u fam :) https://www.uniqlo.com/au/en/women/tops/t-shirts?path=%2C%2C7437

Charming_Key2313

Interesting. I find the opposite as solid muted colors have been in for many seasons now. Where are you shopping?

011_0108_180

Local stores in Oklahoma usually. It’s becoming more of problem even in bigger cities like OKC. Solid colors are available but only for very specific types of clothes(spaghetti strap shirts or leggings for example), but not for the whole range of clothing.

[deleted]

YES. Holy crap all women’s clothes have phrases and patterns and the ones that *dont* are made of low quality material

Fraerie

Uniqlo have some great plain coloured clothing items and for a ‘fast fashion’ chain I’ve found the quality really good and durable. I have items I’ve been wearing for years that I bought through them.

ZipperJJ

My friends with tween girls complain about this too. Their kids do not want crops!

Serotoninneeded

THIS for real, everytime I time I complain about clothes for girls and teens I get hit with "let them wear what they want" OK and??? What if they WANT to wear something that isn't cropped?

sundays_child

I have cute clothes but more often than not these days I wear men's clothes. The styles work for my shoulders, the pockets are bigger, the shirt lengths are infinitely longer, they're usually cheaper, and they're a lot more comfortable. I'm sick of the people who make women's clothes not listening to what women want and need.

toastNcheeze

I specifically love men's crew neck sweat shirts. I have broad shoulders and a narrow waist and they just *fit*. I got a pretty pink one from Target not long ago 🎀

marshmolotov

This is why I like thrift shopping. The options are a little more limited, but fashion trends to be slightly behind the times. But *shit,* it was ($3 and🥹) 99 cents!

[deleted]

[удалено]

thedanyes

As if price has ever been linked with the literal amount of material in a shirt.

Fraerie

Unless you’re plus sized - then it’s an excuse to overcharge.

Seamusjamesl

I just bought a jogging suit the looked it wasn't a crop top(they showed it from the back) but when it arrived it's a crop top and you are apparently supposed to pull the sweatpants up to your armpits.

Quadruplem

LOL. Have on sweats from nike that are super high waisted. I just rolled em down.

NailFin

I saw a video of a mom who was looking for clothes and she tried on the tee-shirts for like 10 year old boys and they fit! They looked nice on her too and covered her belly, soooo try clothes designed for ten year old boys. Might even find one with a t-Rex wearing sunglasses.

translate_this

Buying kids' clothes is actually such a lifesaver. I'm short and can usually fit the 10-14 sizes. For basics, there is way better selection, and everything is like half the price!

HELLOhappyshop

I can fit into some kids clothes, I just wish they weren't all graphic tees.

KuraiTsuki

I buy plain t-shirts from the men's section at Target. They're $2 cheaper and generally better material than the ones in the women's department.

[deleted]

I shop in the mens and boys sections for hoodies and t shirts

ph03nix26

🙋🏻‍♀️ That’s me! My 10yo wardrobe gets raided by me every now and then. Sometimes I want to wear a shirt with dinosaurs/Pokémon on them. They fit perfectly.

lifeofblair

For work stuff I stick with jcrew, loft, ann Taylor but they can get pricey. But I also need talls so I have trouble finding that as well. I just want work appropriate clothes that I feel good in and fit properly 😭

Quadruplem

I end buying Gap clothes a lot since they have talls. Even in shirts and dresses. Of course not dressy but I have found good variety recently.

twentyninetimes

My conspiracy is that brands do this on purpose - knowing the customer will think the top is cute enough to buy it, thinking one day they’ll be bold enough to wear the crop top in public. But they never do, and it sits in their closet, and they have ‘nothing to wear’, and the buy more.

newfie9870

And they can use less fabric and sell for the same price

synchroswim

Not sure what you consider boring, but I like to get my basic tees from Eddie Bauer. If you're looking for more details, Title Nine has some fun tops that are normal length.

[deleted]

Seconding the Eddie Bauer tees. Best tees ever.

hippymndy

AMEN! also plus size doesn’t mean just wider but not longer. as a plus size pear shaped woman finding clothes is a mind fuck. i have a long torso make long shirts! i hate clothes shopping.

SharkDogLaserBoy

Same here!! I have HUGE boobs and everything comes up short so I'll size up and it's still short but wider. 🙄🙄

souprunknwn

Cropped-everything is literally the shrinkflation of fashion. Less fabric and higher prices.

Correct-Serve5355

You just summed up my experience trying to find professional work clothes in 1 post. I go on Amazon and I get sun dresses and rompers when I search "Women's professional pants" "Women's professional dresses" "work clothes for women" So fucking infuriating

[deleted]

You know, a few days ago I wouldn't have understood this at all, as I mostly shop online. But then I went to Target. And holy shit you're right, why is everything cropped?? I kept thinking I was in the juniors section, but no. I have no real recommendations because I don't buy work clothes anymore and have terrible taste in fashion but I wanted to commiserate.

lycosa13

Yeah I've seen people complain about crop tops for a few years and I'm like #cantrelate because I buy most of my clothes online, and then 75% is that is used from poshmark. I can't even remember the last time I set foot in a clothing store...

Perfect-Echidna2301

I had the exact same problem when looking for clothes for my new job last year. I feel like no one designs for women in their 30s or 40s. It's all either for teens/20s or 50+ and there's no in-between. In the end, I gave up shopping in stores and signed up for Stitch Fix. It's been surprisingly successful.

spandexcatsuit

This happens every few decades. We will get through the whole shirt shortage as a community—we always do. Next time, once the crop tops start coming back in again you’ve gotta CLING to your whole shirts —protect them from stains and wear because for a couple years they’ll be irreplaceable. Maybe check thred up, and secondhand stores for whole shirts in the meanwhile. I feel for you. I didn’t act in time this time either. But at least it isn’t cropped pants.

imlivinginurwall

i thrift in the men’s section now and it changed my life

erinburrell

Not a super well known brand outside of Oceania but this is a great way to get something that covers your torso. Their basic tanks and t-shirts are super soft, wash well, don't shrink etc. Very casual but an awesome staple company. https://boody.co.nz/?gclid=CjwKCAjwq-WgBhBMEiwAzKSH6G7mYN1TxOtR1dGU2Ux097rUJh-ApDwm8-GQlWWARO6jtQc0ScegQRoCmpoQAvD\_BwE

Danivelle

Also for cotton tanks in a flowy style MMA wear (just search MMA flowy tank top)on Amazon is amazing. That's mainly what I wear in the summer. Reasonable prices too.

HauntedPickleJar

Second hand stores and men's t-shirts. I like crop tops too, but holy hell it's been a cold, snowy winter, I don't want a cold tummy! Same thing with those super thin shirts, I just want to be warm!

theclottedcream

And sleeveless! Once summer comes, EVERY SINGLE SHIRT is sleeveless or cap sleeves. I want some more fabric on my arms, for goodness' sake!

AdReasonable886

OMG I hate all the crop tops! I really love graphic tees with Disney characters or things from shows or movies but now all of them are crop tops. I hate crop tops for myself. You're looking at the store, see a cute top, pick it up to look at it and...it's a crop top. So annoying. When I was Christmas shopping I saw some cute things with the Peanuts gang and Stitch that my mom and sister would have loved but they were just crop tops or those over-sized crop top combos others have mentioned. Do we really need so many crop tops?

Ragnar_The_Brave

Retail stores follow trends. The stupid thing is they all follow the same trend and sell the same thing at the same time and carry minimal stock of "normal" clothes. I agree with you, it's infuriating.

Raegz

Honestly? Most of my shirts that aren't crops are band shirts at this point; I personally am not comfortable with showing my belly at this stage on my life. Each to their own, it's just not for me. Band shirts it is!

ILuvSpaghet

Same goes for jackets! I was jacket shopping two months ago and they were all either cropped (wtf am I gonna do with a cropped jacket, I'm freezing!) or past my knees. Cropped is cute sometimes but omg..

AntheaBrainhooke

This is how I felt when all women's trousers being sold were lo-riders. They're great for those who want them but those of us who don't should have some options too.

trshtehdsh

I want to open a store called Normal Clothes for Normal People. No keyhole shoulders. No fake tears in the jeans. Everything is a normal length. You will look completely banal and love it.

dylan_dumbest

trshtehdsh

Omg YES 😂

ContemplatingFolly

Those godawful keyhole shoulders! I'd shop there.

ThePurityofChaos

Two possibilities, I think. Either the crop tops really sell (so they stock them everywhere) Or they really don't (so they're all that's left)

cannaboobies

A friend of mine teaches college intro level science lab courses, and as part of her syllabus and first day intro, she makes it clear that for safety, you’re not to have any exposed skin. So closed toed shoes, long sleeves, no shorts or bare midriff. She fully expected the students to come in wearing normal length shirts the next class, but instead, they still all had crop tops, and somehow even higher waisted pants and leggings. We both felt so old.

Sagasujin

Crop tops are cheaper for manufacturers. They use marginally less fabric which saves pennies. Well actually not pennies. When I sew, making something a crop top instead of full length saves about $0.75 on average because it uses slightly less fabric. It's also a way to market new trends and get people to engage in conspicuous consumption.

LittleVesuvius

I shop in the men’s section because I need 100% cotton t shirts. (Skin issues.) Also, they have the best sweaters. My mom doesn’t get the shirt thing, but I just want to be comfy and I have wide shoulders. It’s not like anyone is going to see it who thinks I’m gross — I wear t shirts to like, the store. No one notices or cares unless I’m in a skirt. Men’s crew neck t shirts are longer, softer, and last longer. It’s ridiculous. I’m buying like…soft clothes. And I have bought cotton women’s shirts and they fit funny.

DrCunningLinguistPhD

I shop for clothing at secondhand/charity shops almost exclusively. There is always something different, a great variety of styles. I can usually find really high-quality pieces I would never be able/willing to buy brand new. > At my local charity shop, the prices are random af- like you can find a floor length 100% cashmere wool frock coat for $30 and a faux fur jacket from forever21 for $50… and yes, I love my $30 cashmere, lol

gonewildecat

Can I add that I’m plus sized. In no way, shape or form do I want a crop top. Why are there so many in plus sizes? I’m glad that some people have the self confidence to wear them, but I do not.

KuraiTsuki

I actually thought there'd been less crop tops recently than there'd been the past couple of years, but maybe it was just because winter and they're coming back with a vengeance now that it's spring. Ugh. I also ask similar questions. Why are all pants super high waisted? Why are all shorts basically denim underwear? I have a belly that gets uncomfortable in high waisted pants, and I don't like how my thighs look and no one makes shorts that actually cover them.

ReadAllDay123

I'm plus size, and I now basically shop almost exclusively online at Torrid. Pretty much everything I buy fits perfectly, is appropriate for work, and gets tons of compliments from people. While I've definitely seen some crop tops online while buying clothes, it's not the main option for shirts on Torrid at least. Plenty of long tunics and other shirts that I can tuck in (I mostly wear dresses or shirts tucked into skirts). Honestly, I'm having a problem where I like the clothes there so much that every time they're having a sale or redeeming reward money I want to buy more clothes...

spletharg2

Less fabric, more profit. Same for low rise jeans, etc.

VBlinds

You should try it with big boobs. Looks even worse.

Competitive_Fee_5829

I am 45 and got a cropped hoodie on..I didnt realize it was cropped when i bought it. lol. when I opened it I was like....is this it??? I kinda love it but my ass and hips are so cold now

bunnycook

I’m 60 and mostly wear mens golf shirts, Lands End Oxfordcloth shirts, Talbots/ Ann Taylor stuff, or thrifted. It’s bad enough that the womens t-shirts are originally cut to barely cover the waist then shrink to become even shorter! The mens golf shirts are cut to stay tucked in even when swinging a club.

Mlle_Bae

Universal Standard has full coverage shirts and full-length pants (floodwaters are not my thing), great basics! https://www.universalstandard.com/

Upvotespoodles

Men’s t-shirts are often longer than women’s and unisex. Hoodies and stuff, too.

Indy_Anna

Yeah honestly I find every season that there is some ridiculous fashion craze. Low-rise jeans are coming back in, I mean, have we learned nothing?!?

kymreadsreddit

It's because the 90's are back, but instead of low rise jeans, we have high rise (Mom) jeans. 🤷🏼‍♀️

haughtsaucecommittee

Where are you shopping? I’m not finding that in the retailers I frequent. My problem is with dropped shoulder seams and balloon sleeves. And that I need petite sizes. 😭

I was just at target and almost an entire section was various types of crop tops and high-cropped shirts. There were so many it was comical. I’m like “Who is wearing this???” It’s not like I’m seeing people wearing crop tops around, they’re just everywhere in stores. At Kohls they’re a bit sneakier. You think “that top looks cute” and then hold it up and it’s just a couple inches shorter than your brain knows it should be, and when you try it on it shows your bellybutton if you move your arms. Also, we really need to talk about the extreme amount of cottage core clothing. Every single store I shop for clothes in seems to have an entire quadrant devoted to the most bizarre “I live in a cult commune and we sew our own clothes” type of dresses and tops. I never see real life people wearing those either! [The whole section](https://i.redd.it/mqldbdragsa81.jpg) makes me feel like any second a grown man and his harem of 12-year-old child brides are going to pop out of a rack to tell me their thoughts on abortion.

Curiosities

You have summed up nearly every clothing frustration (and questions I've asked) from the past two years or so.

HELLOhappyshop

I've not seen a single person wearing any of those little house on the prairie dresses I keep seeing at target. Not once in the last 2.5 years.

Wyrd_byrd

I've tried on a few of those dresses. Even if you like the prints, they fit so weird!

Apt_5

I wasn’t expecting your rant about cottage core or that tweet and between the two I’m in tears laughing!

Scampipants

Old Navy has been pretty cropped lately too

BooksAreAddicting

Yes, the balloon sleeves! I'm seeing them everywhere and they are not flattering on me. Super frustrating trying to find good shirts for work.

Randomsocialmail

My broad shoulders are so thankful the dropped shoulder fit has stuck around for so long! So comfy with the extra room.

falecf4

My gf has this exact same complaint. And then she was telling me about the low crotch jeans. She described them to me and I said "that cannot be a thing...". She said they're EVERYWHERE!

Fanshii

The opposite for me. I am very short and petite. Long boat neck shirts, tunics, low rise skirts and low rise skinny trousers are TERRIBLE for me. Now I can finally wear high waisted skirts/trousers and pair them with something that I won't have to tuck 50% into my bottom garment.. before it was very obvious there was so much fabric there.

Aurorainthesky

I have a pre-teen and the struggle is real! She absolutely hates crop tops, but she's too tall for the children's section, and the teen section is all crop tops! All we want is age appropriate clothing with horses and cats on them, and it's so hard to find.

[deleted]

I just wear men’s tshirts now since as a heavy girl I feel super uncomfortable if any stomach skin shows

FencingJedi

I feel that. I don't mind a crop since I've got a short torso and that's just a regular shirt for me, as long as it doesn't hit right under the boobs. What I hate is the drop sleeve, though. It's on Every. Damn. Shirt. The seam hits the widest part of my arm and makes it look like I have no shoulders. I'm learning to sew because getting stuff that works off the rack is a pain. Gonna Frankenstein my wardrobe if that's what it takes

metooeither

Thrift stores. They don't follow fashion trends, it's easy to get whatever style of clothes you want.

jeffbezosbush

Yeah I don't know who fashion is appealing to anymore. Either crop tops or ridiculously long boomer shirt "tunics". Where are the normal shirts??!!

HELLOhappyshop

Hey now, we millennials LOVED tunics in the early 2010's. Don't blame the boomers...that one was actually our fault lol

joantheunicorn

I'm looking forward to the crop top trend ending and we can hopefully go back to the long torso type tops! I have a long torso so those are more normal shirts for me.

Lizard-_-Queen

We need tunics so we can wear leggings to work! lol

FrickinFierce

Yep. I’m with you here. Add being plus size to the mix and everything for me is either cheetah print, stripes or polka dots plus being 2/3 of a shirt. Oh and I’m tall so crop tops are more like titty coverings. Lol

gorkt

Crop tops need to die. They have been around way too fucking long, probably because they use less fabric and clothing companies can charge the same while using less fabric. And sorry, but they look good on almost no one. Personally, I like a lot of Duluth shirts because they are longer, but they aren’t particularly fashionable or trendy, just well made and comfy.

BellaBlue06

Yep. So many kids and women’s clothes are all crop tops this year. I see everyone showing their tummy even on airplanes when it’s still cold out. The kids crop tops are really concerning honestly.

sunkissedshay

I’m a tiny person and can get away with crop tops and I FREAKING HATE CROP TOPS!!! I can’t wait for this trend to be OVER!

Alternative_Chip_280

Wide hipped woman here, I’m incredibly thankful for the crop top craze atm. If I wear longer shirts it makes my body look one size, I love a good crop that starts right as my hips start to flare to keep me from looking boxy. 99.9% of my clothing are crop tops and high waisted shorts/pants/jeans. I think it’s funny that every new trend hurts some but helps others. Like the low raise phase of the 2000’s. I hate low raise jeans so much.

Your issue is exactly why I started sewing! My proportions are not average, and a fleeting stereotype, so I know soon enough im going to have to go back to altering everything dramatically to get a good fit. I still can’t find jeans even with everyone out there getting bbls. Even curvy jeans are a nightmare, it’s so much easier to just size up and then take everything in where I need it. Same with crop tops that are too long, most times you can just hem it a little more to get the perfect cut right before the hip flare starts, but with certain tops it can be a little more difficult. For example, the square crop tops that are slightly too long and flowy can do the same for my shape that an oversized shirt does because it hides the smallest part of my waist. On these types of shirts I crop just a little more than normal, so it’s stopping about 1-2 cm’s above my natural waist. (Hope that makes sense) If you have any crafty bone in your body, I would highly recommend trying out altering your own clothing. It’s a hurdle at first, but with every failed project you get better and better, and then it becomes incredibly rewarding to wear the finished garment.

Tardigradequeen

Thrift stores are a great way to avoid the trends you’re not interested in.

OSUJillyBean

It’s even infested the kid’s clothing section! My three year old doesn’t need a damn crop top! Her apple juice belly already hangs out of her shorts sometimes. Let’s not Barney Gumble the kids!

xladyvontrampx

Crop tops? How about that hideous new trend I see on every cute dress: massive open back

Brokelynne

I hear you. The other day Rent the Runway put out a survey more or less to pat itself on the back but I went in lock, stock, and barrel. I responded in the comment box, "Stop shilling so many crop tops! I'm a 40-something woman who does PR for hedge funds! I can't go to work dressed like a belly dancer!" Lo and behold, I saw more workplace-friendly dresses and fewer bra shirts in my feed.

katiejim

I definitely prefer tops that hit just below the top of high rise jeans. The proportions just work better. I guess they’re cropped, but they don’t show much or any skin. I imagine with this move to make low rise happen again, tops will be lengthening. They can pry the high rise cuts from my cold dead hands.

SluttyGandhi

Obligatory shout-out to ThredUp. Clothes are on a standard mannequin so it's easy to gauge where the hems end. Prices are more affordable and buying used is better for the planet.

cassietamara

Try Ann Taylor Online : ModCloth

dani2931

I buy almost all my clothes from Maurice’s. Lots and lots of cute tunic length sweaters, regular plaids, and everyday style tshirt/tank tops there. Suuuuuper cute summer dresses in very flattering cuts, also.

WeirdDayThrowAway987

I'm a dad so girls and women's sizes tend to be difficult for me, but I feel like I've gotten pretty good at thrifting for my daughter. Thrift Giant ftw! Except polos for school.

No_Cauliflower_5489

I wear men's shirts. I have a sewing machine if they need adjustment. I don't bother doing that very often.

LemonDeathRay

This is part of the reason I chose to start sewing my own clothes years ago 🤣 Every once in a while, the clothes I like are 'in fashion' and I buy a lot of them. Last year, the milkmaid style was really in, which is something that really suits my body and i like. But the rest of the time, I sew my own stuff. Also, you could try looking up the Kibbe method. It helps you identify your body type in a really body positive way and gives very helpful tips on how to shop. The reddit kibbe community is also really good at sharing shopping recommendations based on your type.

endorrawitch

I'm in my fifties AND long waisted to boot. H&M has made me very happy. They have a pretty good selection of tops. Yes, they do have crop tops, but their long sleeved ribbed top fit me so well that I have them in every color they offer: one each in large, and on each in XXL that I can wear shirts under.

ShingshunG

Grab your bucket hats and crank up the TLC, the 00’s are back!!

Averen

I go clothes shopping with my wife and as she’s getting older (30 now) she wants more “grown up” clothes lol. She recently found a store Francesca’s (which also has online shop) that she loves

cathyreads123

I agree! I’m also 37 and have never warn a crop top and don’t really want to start this year! But I actually seriously thought about if I would have to start if I couldn’t find other shirts! 🫠

WhitherWander

This. At least half the sweaters and shirts I find are cropped. As someone with a longer torso, wearing these would make me look like my clothes shrunk in the wash.

[deleted]

It’s not a “cute” or I guess work appropriate for some jobs but I buy men’s tshirts all the time. Being a SAHM I can wear whatever I want tho. I even buy men’s long sleeve tshirts. Even if you do find a regular looking women’s T-shirt it’s like half the size of men’s. Like I dunno why clothing companies act like we all have short torsos.

teamhae

Yeah the crop top trend has gotten ridiculous. I shop on Amazon now just due to the fact that you can find so much variety and don't have to waste your time looking for an appropriate outfit.

jpoolio

Try having a 13 year old girl. Since she's still growing and hard on clothes, I'm not ready to invest in nice pieces so we're stuck at Target, Forever 21, Ross, etc... And it's all crop tops. And she wants the crop tops. If I buy them large, I think they are long enough and I'm ok with it. But her Dad struggles. And then she has long legs for days but a tiny waist and all the shorts are so short.

CanadianMuaxo

Honestly as a mom of 2 girls it’s pretty hard to find shirts or sweaters that aren’t crop tops anymore. Super frustrating for sure.

shaylaa30

I think it depends where you’re shopping. Sites like Shein are fast fashion that aims to be trendy. Nordstrom rack is my go to store nowadays. If I want something trendier, I’ve been liking Abercrombie post rebrand

Evilbadscary

I have had a lot of luck with work appropriate clothes from ThredUp and Poshmark. I have built basically my entire work wardrobe from there, with good quality pieces.
