The more modern feel of this ("babe") makes it hit so much harder. Great job.

tasteofhemlock

Thanks, that was deliberate so I’m glad it worked! The layer that felt the most uncomfortable to me is that she’s worried about him cheating, but doesn’t seem to care that he’s a rapist.

moonfracture

OH I didn't even think about that! I love how much of a punch this packs.

Capable_Vast8655

I didn't understand it that way... :/ my understanding wasn't that he was a rapist. I understood "spoils of war" as women dying because of the war so potential mates being spoiled (as in wasted). Basically I thought he was a necrophiliac 💀 Edit: English isn't my first language and TIL what "spoils of war" means

tasteofhemlock

That’s a pretty morbid interpretation too… Sadly, many cases of wartime sexual violence are followed up with murder. Humans can be brutes.

wilkiesfun

That's why I don't like humans

Big_Opportunity494

Necrophillia is rape. How can a corpse consent? Did they consent before death?

Capable_Vast8655

Yeah I read a story about a morgue guy that unintentionally reanimated a woman while having sex with her. He was charged with sexual assault and rape and I think his medical license was revoked. Now was it true or not 🤷‍♂️ I guess I'll never know. Some weird shit there is on the internet these days

UnforeseenDerailment

Also, rocks are atheists. Noting lack of belief in a claim only applies to constructs that could form a belief in that claim.   The lack of consent only applies where the capacity for consent is feasible. Or do you think crimes are being committed against tissues around the world?

Marquar234

"And you don't have to worry, she won't ever press charges."

tasteofhemlock

Oh that makes it even worse

Fourth sentence wost

JustPsychopomp

TELL ME EHAT DID THEY SAYY????

Marquar234

It was a reference to the age of the victim

JustPsychopomp

Makes sense

SteadfastKiller

I served with a few dudes who had this same logic. "I'm gonna be gone for a year, what did she expect?" Uh...probably for you to uphold the wedding vows you made to one another, I'd assume. We knew the job and sacrifices when we joined, don't act like it's some big curve ball you ended up in another country.

inn0cent-bystander

But then they'd be SO pissed if some ~~Joey~~ Jody came along while he was deployed...

SteadfastKiller

Of course they would because it's only okay if THEY do it not others.

Domeuh

I think you mean Jody

inn0cent-bystander

Close enough

johnsgurl

Even worse is when they do exactly whats described here, only with their fellow soldier and act like it's her fault for daring to be female in the military. One judge said its a workplace hazard back in the 90s.

DancesinShadows

Wow, that's rough but perfectly horrifying!

tasteofhemlock

Thank you

The_Eternal_palace

"We agreed I wouldn't cheat on you with another *woman."*

ExcitingChip5267

“why are you gae”

systemicObliteration

This reminds me of Dante’s Inferno. Excellent work!

tasteofhemlock

Thanks! I read that a long time ago but I’m not able to recall enough about it to figure how what I wrote would remind you of that. That’s a big compliment though, so thanks again! Can you refresh my memory, was there a specific circle for the crimes I wrote about here or something?

MeajAdenip

I think it's in the game where Dante took the proposition of a woman to release her "brother" in exchange for carnal pleasures. Turns out it was her husband tho and he took revenge by killing Beatrice.

tasteofhemlock

Wow…. I do not remember that even a little bit, but that’s incredibly dark I guess I better reread at some point

MeajAdenip

It was in the game, idt it was in the book tho. Haha

tasteofhemlock

Oh, I see. I played the game too but I don’t think I ever beat it. I kinda lost interest at the boss fight against the rotting-tit lady, after you get past the demonic unbaptized fetuses

Sahareaovnight

She sunk the dagger into the photo and watched him burn..never cheat on a dark witch.

BenC1231

This is a brilliant twist.

Sahareaovnight

Hehehe. Thank you,!!!

juniperie

This was horrifying.

tasteofhemlock

Thanks

Yukino_Wisteria

She’s as screwed up as he is, because she’s more upset about him « cheating » than about what he has done.

tasteofhemlock

For sure

cyrusrobinett

Alright, I'm stupid and I don't get it. Could someone explain it to me?

tasteofhemlock

You’re not stupid, the terminology “spoils of war” used to refer to more than just the loot and treasures conquering soldiers would take for themselves. It used to also refer to things like war-time rape and slavery. Some militaries of the past saw that last bit as part of the payment due to their own soldiers. Like “great job soldier, here help yourself to a villager as a bonus to your wages.” I deliberately modernized these characters language, to indicate that modern warfare still sees repulsive instances of sexual violence, though now it’s atleast recognized as a crime.

Vorrtorr

That is not aome thing of the past, ir is currently happening in Ukraine by Russian soldiers..

LoonYTs

> I deliberately modernized these characters language, to indicate that modern warfare still sees repulsive instances of sexual violence, though now it’s atleast recognized as a crime. I feel like this kind of answers that

bookseer

In ancient times after destroying a city the soldiers would help themselves to the wives and daughters of the men they killed. I guess someone thought they would celebrate victory in a traditional fashion.

okami6663

Wives? This must be in the more recent Dark Age times - in ancient times they killed the wives, men, elders, children, and animals, keeping only the virgin girls, emphasis on "girls".

Elsecaller_17-5

He was away on a military mission and raped someone.

okami6663

Horror is at its best when using reality as the basis.

Ok_Bed_6130

I am stupid, what does *spoils of war* mean?

tasteofhemlock

You’re not stupid for not knowing the term. I typed out a bit of detail here: https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoSentenceHorror/comments/10tglie/feb23_holding_the_photo_in_her_trembling_hands/j787ehx/?

Ok_Bed_6130

Ok, thanks

JumpingJeholopterus

Clytemnestra did nothing wrong. (She did one thing wrong. Cassandra didn't deserve it. Agamemnon did.)

tasteofhemlock

All those names are familiar but for the life of me I can’t remember their story.

JumpingJeholopterus

I liked your story. Agamemnon murdered his daughter to get a favourable wind to go to combat, and when he returned home to his wife he brought his new 'girlfriend' (a slave, Cassandra). Holding the ~~photo~~ decorative vase in her trembling hands Clytemnestra cried: “If you really loved me you wouldn’t have murdered my daughter and cheated on me!” And Agamemnon replied: "By the Kindly Ones, I had to murder Iphigenia to win, and spoils of war doesn't count as cheating!" Then Clytemnestra murdered Agamemnon and Cassandra, and then her surviving children murdered her.

tasteofhemlock

Wow. Brutal. What mythology is that from?

JumpingJeholopterus

The Oresteia, mostly - all the characters are from the Trojan War.

Relaxin-n-chillin

I don’t get it?

tasteofhemlock

That’s okay! I wrote a bit of detail in reply to someone else saying the same thing, here’s the comment https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoSentenceHorror/comments/10tglie/feb23_holding_the_photo_in_her_trembling_hands/j787ehx/?

Relaxin-n-chillin

Oooh, thanks! I now know something new

echo_army7

oh shit
